- This is my first time with the Gearlab Kayak Rolling Paddle Float.. well, first time with any paddle float. I've been wanting to learn how to roll a kayak but haven't been able to find a class to learn here in Hong Kong. So instead, I decided to get the Gearlab Kayak Rolling Paddle Float so I can learn by myself and hope to document it here. I will be pairing it with the Gearlab Akiak Greenland Paddle on my Pakayak.
I also said Side Sculling quite a few times in this video but I realised what I was doing isn't a side scull.. 😅😂
My previous video shows the features and functions of the Gearlab Kayak Rolling Paddle Float and you can find it here: • GEARLAB KAYAK ROLLING ...
I'm sure you will have many comments 😅😂 but please keep in mind this is literally my first time and I need to gain the basics before I am anywhere near a full roll. But still, I always appreciate your valuable comments (especially from Bill) and your genuine interest.
You can see my progression videos below.

Wow, you're my hero, trying for the first time by yourself and posting the video to boot. That was brave and other beginners will appreciate seeing that it's not easy and will take time. I'm sure in the beginning it takes muscles but after you get it down it will be more Technique than muscles. I did hear a snap too, viewers of my Kalleq video put in the comments that they had breakage problems. Maybe give yours a close look over. Then if your Kayak isn't known for rolling and with it, you master it. That would be like becoming a professional Golfer while using a Baseball Bat. Lol... It would be cool to see you try a rolling friendly Kayak after you master this one. Loved the honesty, bravery in making this video.
Bill! I was a little embarrassed to show this video.. but I thought I’d share the journey. I checked Akiak a few times afterwards but didn’t see any issues.. I really wondered what the snap was 😂😂 phantom snap! I also thought that if I could roll with the Pakayak, I could roll easier with rolling friendly kayaks.. or maybe wishful thinking on my side. Thanks as always for your comments!
@@Fishaholicboy No man that was a great video, one of your best.
@@jakebrakebill haha thank you!
Love your videos and your ability to stay positive through everything!
Haha thanks! Being on the water is my happy place so will always enjoy just being out
Got to know, how do you get so crisp sound when you speak? At 3 minutes you went in the water, yet sound is perfect. Not muffled. I like your video, right down my alley. To see experts doing things, only makes you more frustrated, because it is NEVER as easy as experts makes it look like. This is true learning process.
I'm starting to feel I'm never going to do a roll.. haha. Alot of people have told me it's difficult on the Pakayak and I'm starting to believe it. But again, I only just started so I'm going to keep trying until I succeed.
For the sound, I actually didn't get the camera in the water so it wasn't blocked by the water. I actually have a small dead cat (two of them) and I stick it over the two audio slots on the GoPro. Similar to this but not quite the same: amzn.to/3IdfUAn
It helps alot when it's windy but sometimes you can see it in the recording so I just zoom in for that footage. You can also trim it a little bit. However, when it gets wet, you have to wipe it with a towel to absorb all the water before recording again.
@@Fishaholicboy Thx. I was totally unaware of the disaster when I filmed my last trip. Not usually in very windy conditions.
As for roll, I have never done it either, but only plan to listen to those who says it is easy. :-) But I saw your specs, and the kayak is 61 cm wide. Mine is 56 cm, it makes a huge difference I am told. I will make sure to document my learning process too. :-)
@@BackonTrailasia I think it’s easy for those who’ve rolled for years 😂 would be awesome to see your progress too! I’ve been told the volume of the kayak makes a difference and also how much contact you have in your cockpit. So many things to consider….
L😊ovely video. Humbleness is a grear quality man. Good !
Thank you! Appreciate it. Definitely will keep going and document my process
This is such a beautiful place mate . Enjoy your place and nature !
I really love being outdoors.. it's just so serene. Good to get away from the concrete jungle.
Brilliant video and self awareness of what to observe for a good roll. Your concept of using the float or paddle less and concentrate on hip flick is the key to success. The float is a perfect tool for self rescue when you do solo paddling. It helps self recovery or float assisted rolls. After mastering a better hip flick you may move on to using paddle alone. It's a bit of challenge rolling this specific kayak as it's difficult to anchor your knee on the super high deck. Keep up your good work!
Thanks you! Thank you for the tip and support!
Nice hip flick!!! Textbook hip flick!!!!
haha! Thanks! Not entirely sure if its correct but still good fun nevertheless!
Do not worry mate . You will get it soon if you stick at it . The most important in kayaking is to be confortable with this . Because an emergency situation is not a situation for the future in kayaking . So never give up and you will soon find out about the swing movement of your paddle and the push movement of your feet on the inner foot hold .
Some low level kayaks do not have this foot hold .... Then rolling becomes sort of impossible for a beginner who needs this foot hold in order to help the roll movement of the kayak . Also lean your torso to the back when you roll so your body will get out out the water with ease .
The LAST PART to get out of the water is your head . Always remain flexible and kind of slow motion in what you do . The only movement wich has to be a bit faster is your HORZONTAL not vertical paddle swing in order to create a hold in the water for rolling . You can go back and forth if needed with your paddle . Only at the very end you can be a slightly vertical when your body is out of the water and your boat in good position .
Happy rolling dear friend .
czcams.com/video/EyGMc1rw_78/video.html
Thanks for the tip! There's so many things to figure out and it's when all these movements move in unison, I'll get it! I'll have to focus one at a time so I don't move instinctively and do what is required. Also, thanks for sharing the video.. that's all I am doing these days 😂
@@360.Outdoors.Videos wow. These safety tips are great! Always to be safe than sorry right? Some of things I didn’t even think about.. shame on me!
Oh so this is what it's used for! And this area is so beautiful!
Yeah it’s like training wheels to get me comfortable on the water to do kayak rolls! The float is also used for self rescues for times you are by yourself and you flip the kayak.. can use it to assist yourself back in the kayak.
enjoyed the video, great demonstration.
Thanks! Still learning but lots of fun!
Still learning how to roll here! Thanks for this post it ain't as easy as it looks lol but the journey is amazing
Hi Travis. It's great you’re learning! We are on the same boat but it's ALOT of fun. I really enjoy it except for the part where I have to empty my kayak 😂 Did you see the rest of the videos in the Rolling Playlist?
Great work! Looks an amazing place to practice too.
Thanks Ian! Still got lots to learn but so much fun!

My pakayak / greenland paddle is coming this week and I also hope to learn how to roll with it.
Thanks so much for following my journey! Still a while to get to a roll but having fun through it all. You'll have so much fun when you receive the Pakayak and the Greenland paddle! You should document your journey and we can support each other!
This was very helpful and fun to watch... The location is beautiful and the food looked tasty as well 👍
The food doesn’t compare to what you normally have on your trips 😂 I’d like to order a grilled cheese please 😉
@@Fishaholicboy haha... 👍
This is sooo incredible!! Cheers to you!! I've not been able to roll my Pakayak as the cockpit is really way too wide for me (especially as a beginner learning the technic to rolling). However, after a rolling clinic I attended, my instructor rolled the Pakayak several times with ease (with a neoprene spray skirt) - so it is definitely possible to roll! I also have the hip pads and knee braces, but I still find it a very wide fit as far as the points of contact. For the class, I was able to borrow a Greenland style kayak for practice during the clinic and was able to do a few rolls. So my plan is to keep practicing with a low volume kayak that is more suited for rolling to learn the technique and then try rolling with the Pakayak since its still my main kayak for casual paddles because it fits in my car.
As for the spray skirt, I use a Seals neoprene spray skirt for rolling or cold weather paddling. It definitely keeps the water out of the cockpit much better that the Pakayak spray skirt. If you check the Seals website for the correct size for the Pakayak, it will say 2.2, but I find that size to be incredible challenging to get on the Pakayak coaming since the midsection of the cockpit dips down quite a bit. So I ordered a size 2.5 and it works great. It's a good seal and much easier to attach the the coaming. The Pakayak spray skirt is great for mild to warm weather or casual paddles with not too much chop and waves. I love the zipper to easily get items from inside the cockpit as well as the two pockets on the outside, but I think it's more suited for casual paddles with light spray. Such a great video! 🙌
I still have a long way to do a roll.. I’m just practicing some exercises before I even attempt it. I don’t feel confident though.. 🥲🥲 it’s so great you have rolled! I did hear the Pakayak is harder to roll but I’m determined. I would love to see videos of you doing rolls with the Low volume kayaks.. you need to show it off! Thanks for sharing tips on the spray skirt. I might have to look into it more but I feel like I’m spending too much already..
I forgot to mention.. I just received my thigh/knee brace. I’ll see if it helps!

Stunning location really beautiful.. firstly protect your shoulders !! It's easy to pick up an injury .
Its definitely alot easier to learn when you have some one to spot and instruct you but you can lay the foundation for your first roll all by yourself.
Here is a video that helped me and you will see me practice the same movements on my own upload as in the video link I will send you !! From that I did manage to get to a pool to practice with experienced kayakers it was at that point it all "clicked" in to place ...
First night in the pool I was shown the finish of the roll where in my right hand I held the paddle float and layed back on my kayak deck I then slid my torso on to the water keeping my back and shoulders in the water and balanced the kayak with my left knee just keeping the kayak edged enough to support me on the water.
I would practice sliding on to and off the water keeping body low only sit up when fully back on deck!!
I put this along with my paddle float practice and I preformed my first roll !! If you keep your eye on your paddle as you sweep out it puts your head in the right position...
Your doing well keep up the the determination and you will be rolling in no time ...
Actually just discovered I sent you the video link already...sorry
Thanks for sharing the link! It’s very helpful.
Unfortunately for me, I couldn’t find people over this way to help me with learning the roll but I’m determined to get it done myself (if ever).
Thanks for all the tip. I was relooking at some of your videos and you make it look so easy in your latest video!
@@Fishaholicboy thank you .
I was where you are now only a few weeks back and if you stick with it you will nail it!!
The paddle float will help you with the mussel memory of what to do when you go over ... follow the steps in the "kayak roll with paddle float video " link I sent you .
The guy that helped me always said its technique!! No real strength or power required and that's what iv to work on ...more finesse. .I cant even feel a hip snap or if I'm even doing one when I roll it's just seems to be a rotation of the body aided by the paddle that swings me on to the back deck of the boat.
I need more practice time myself so I can focus on aspects of the roll and fine tune as i go!!
I'd love to learn the storm roll it's in the pipeline 👍
@@82HEADCASE few weeks?! You must be a fast learner.. that’s awesome. I’ll keep at it and hopefully succeed soon!

Awesome video!
Thanks! Have you been kayaking?
@@Fishaholicboy Of course! You commented on one of my Pakayak videos in the past ;-)
@@TenDigitGrid yah I mean is the weather good over there to kayak?
@@Fishaholicboy hahaha, I totally misunderstood you. Yea we live in San Diego California so the weather is basically always perfect. We are definitely spoiled. We did get on the water this past weekend, should be pushing out a CZcams video by the end of the month of one of our local reservoirs.
We kayaked half of it this past weekend, and hope to kayak the other half next weekend and then push out a video :-)
Loving your videos, keep them up!
@@TenDigitGrid ah that’s so great you can kayak all year! I look forward to the videos!
Nice to see you using the paddle float to exercise the rolling, the main point in this skill. When you try to rise you up , your head and your shoulder have to close together. If your head turning up and leave you shoulder, you will drop in to the water again. Since it is a inertia body movement of the human, your leg will kick the kayak and filp it down
And also you are not going to use the paddle first , is difficult to you! you should try more with the paddle float
Thanks for the tip! I realised this after watching my video properly afterwards. There's so much refinement needed on my side.
Try to use more your hip to give the power than you body. Hip first and body last you will be more smooth!
Nice to see you start doing rolling exercise with a greenland paddle, PAKAYAK has a large cockpit, which is a little bit harder to initial your leg drive.
Hey! Yeah I’m really enjoying the Greenland paddle. I think I need to order some thigh and knee braces for more contact. Will see how it goes
@@Fishaholicboy You can try to DIY your own foam masik, but make sure you know how to take it off when you need to do the wet exit.

Check out Cheri Perry's video, there are lots of insight about rolling
@@qajaqhongkong thanks for sharing. Appreciate it!
@@qajaqhongkong Thats really helpful!
Where are you bracing your knees? Did you add any bolsters or closed cell foam pads?
Hi! I feel I definitely need some thigh and knee braces.. my legs were moving around a bit when I was leaning. Need some more contact!
I think you should practice the greenland balance brace first before the sculling brace. For both of them it looks like your shoulders aren't against the water and thus you aren't getting a lot of buoyancy. From the videos I've watched it seems like you need to get more "square" and rotate your torso more parallel with the water.
Not sure if you have the hip/thigh braces from pakayak as well? I think that might help with having your lower knee apply pressure on the kayak when you are getting back up.
I definitely need to think about getting some high and hip braces to get more contact! I need to check out Pakayak's website for it.
Regarding the braces.. I've come home after that session thinking I need to do alot more study on which ones I need to do first 😂 Definitely need to get closer to the water but was a little nervous. I hope to reduce my nervousness as I get more familiar with it.
@@Fishaholicboy Finally got it and... actually a bit disappointed.
My spray skirt slips off very easily while trying to go into a brace position. It could be that i'm slipping out of the kayak but I think the shape of the combing makes it very susceptible for the skirt to slip off.
The other thing is the hip/thigh foam kit that came with the pakayak has no obvious place to attach to that would actually provide enough support.
I'm thinking of getting a giant foam block and cutting it into the right shape....
@@williamchu2722 hi! I just ordered the thigh brace also so I am excited to try it. The Pakayak website shows how to attach it here: pakayak.freshdesk.com/support/solutions/articles/43000487823-can-you-recommend-a-thigh-brace-to-add-to-the-cockpit-
It does seem different to the other kayaks due to the design. Regarding the spray surf, a friend told me I can use surfers wax to help with the grip so it doesn’t come off so easily. Hope it helps!
@@Fishaholicboy I used silicon gel/mixed with turp as a camping alternative to spray surf and lined most of the edge with it. Seems to work a lot better! I've also just rolled up a yoga mat and stuck it horizontally above my knees. I can rotate my body in the brace position without falling out of the kayak (on dry land).
@@williamchu2722 great! I gotta look into it too. Did you attach the thigh brace too?
Where did you get the dehydrated rice from, AEON/Donki?
Hi! I got it from Overlander. I saw they had many different version too
@@Fishaholicboy awesome thanks, I’ll have a look when I pass by next!
