- Kayaking rolling is not easy and I feel that I rushed into it without properly learning each step so I am here to share with you how NOT to kayak roll while providing a self review.
After these sessions, I downloaded the "This is the Roll" DVD parts 1 and 2 and it is such a great resource to understand each step of the roll. Each step is carefully described and I hope to progress in a more structured manner. I also believe I need a different kayak but I will have to make do with what I have now.
By the way, I am using the Gearlab Akiak Greenland Paddle, Gearlab Rolling Float, and the Pakayak for this video.

First, great job editing and narrating the video. Can you imagine 30 years ago when we didn't have easy access to cameras and trying to figure out what's going on. I love your tenacity of figuring it out all by yourself for the most part. Even knowing what you did wrong and trying to adjust it, on the next outing will take a few attempts. I have nothing to say because I can't roll, other than I'm proud of your success so far.
Thank you! I would say if I didn’t have the cameras, I wouldn’t be able to learn these rolls myself. I would definitely need someone with experience to spot all my errors. I’m going to slow down on the rolls and take it slowly going forward to learn one one properly.. I don’t want to rush it :)
@@Fishaholicboy My opinion your 90% there, the last 10% is just polishing the Diamond
A great journey...Your hard work, reflection and dedication shines through✌
Thanks! It’s only the beginning.. got so many rolls I want to learn
Way to keep at it. It's interesting to be able to view the steps above and below the surface.
Thanks! Having two views also helps me alot too! I can really see where I need to improve on so I am more conscious about it the next time I am out. But I have ruined a camera here and there before due to my negligence.. 😅
I love the way that you break it down, it really helps. You've progressed lots with your rolling, kudos 👏
Thank you! Hopefully do some different rolls soon!
@@Fishaholicboy I'll look forward to them !
Sze Sir, surely one of excellent kayak coach you can met in HK ❤❤
Definitely.. he's so knowledgeable and overall a great person. He has so much passion for kayaking and I am definitely lucky to have met him. It's sad he returned to the UK.
Wow, Hello my friend.. All the best to your channel and hope you have a wonderful day !!!
Thank you! You have such a cute channel!
Great tutorial. Great resources for those who have tried.
Thanks! I hope it made sense.. I also hope my self analysis is correct 😅
Very nice!
Practice never betrays you!
Very true.. I like your quote "practice never betrays you" although I feel like I'm practicing with the wrong technique 😅😅 I need to refine alot and slow down. I have so many bad habits..
Hi and thanks, Fishaholicboy for sharing. I'm glad to see you in the water. As always it's a very informative and instructive video, especially, about how you overcame the obstacles to your successful kayak roll. I was told by my tour guide that I need to release my skirt if I fall into the sea, so they can save me😅. I wear contact lenses and I can't or am afraid of rolling underwater. Do you think mount stabilizer(s) could be my option when I decide to purchase a sea kayak? If you hear about kayak stabilizer(s), would you please let me know? Appreciate it. 😎
Rock and Roll !
More like roll and swim haha
rolling is funny, enjoy
Thanks! Definitely fun.. still only have one roll but I plan to keep learning more :)
We have similar styles....throw ourselves into the deep end and see what happens...lol...I just started rolling so I'll video and do the same. Looking forward to watching your progress.
I really look forward to your progress! Will you try and roll by yourself? I would suggest to do with someone who already knows how to roll.. makes life so much easier without all the wet exits. I got tired from the wet exits rather than the rolling itself 😅 I also have really bad habits so in hindsight, I should've done it slowly with someone.
@@Fishaholicboy I've been doing it by myself and do most of my trips solo so its something I have become use to. Luckily my boat is easier to roll than yours which makes it very impressive what you have been able to do.I'm inspired.
@@boutthere3374 I really can't wait to see your rolling videos! I love watching other people roll.. I'm not so graceful haha.
Congratulations! But I think that you should start with the back-deck (standard roll) instead of the c-to-c roll. You will use less force and will learn to have the head out of the water last. (Look at the sky until you are laying straight with the kayak on the aft deck).
The knee drive is one of the things you really miss. A lower center of gravity and a proper knee drive will do it.
Yes, I scrapped the C to C roll as I was using a GP instead of the Euro. It was just the first session on land that I use the Euro but it was a great learning experience! Unfortunately my back deck is super high and can't even lay.. I tried to move forward too but I think my flexibility also plays a part. I definitely need to work on the leg drive, I believe that's one of the key things I need to learn.
What he ^ said. Get the standard roll down first.
This is fantastic, such an important skill...I'll be trying to learn this also in the future...would you recommend using a gentle buoyancy vest maybe to start?
Great to know you will learn this! It's a fun process although can get a little tiring unless you have someone to spot you so I recommend to learn this in a class or with someone who already knows how to roll. I found that I have bad habits already and I need to unlearn them. Definitely use a PFD as it will help with your buoyancy :)
@@Fishaholicboy thank you for tips..👍
Roll is a technique used in an emergency, and you need to practice consistently to use it in real life. ^^b
Definitely! I really need to practice a lot to become more comfortable
@@Fishaholicboy ^^b
i have new sea kayak 58 cm width , is same as yours. i also need to train rolling.
Oh wow.. that’s cool! Which kayak did you get?? Rolling is fun! I am still very much a beginner 😅
is classic hard plastic kayak, durable, cheap, have fin for change direction (i not use)
Do you think the thigh/knee pads are required for rolling in the pakayak?
Hi! I think it depends on how much contact you already have.. but cockpit size of the Pakayak is extremely large so I would say there's not much contact. Having the knee pads helped alot for me. The thigh pads less so.. so I bought some yoga blocks and wedged them against my thighs. Having the pads helped alot as I was moving around less when on my side or upside down. Are you thinking of rolling the Pakayak too?
@@Fishaholicboy yes! I ordered a spray skirt for paddle drips and was thinking i might as well learn to roll
@@strobecoral Oh great! My suggestion is to have someone to help you who already knows rolling. Countless times, I had to do a wet exit and empty out the kayak and it was more tiring than the roll itself 😂 Just to manage some expectations, the spray skit from Pakayak does let water in the cockpit but very slowly and also depends how long you will be on the edge or upside down so a bilge pump helps too.
"This is the Roll" is a very structural resource for learning Greenland rolling, I learn all the Greenland rolling from that, as your preview session with Mr. Sze Sir (Chris) , which specifically rolling from the side (sticking your head to ear), those are two different learning system, they have something similar and difference. When you started to absorb many different styles or learning progress, it can become very difficult to change the bad habit. As a beginner (or even an intermediate paddler) , it is not easy to perform the differences between traditional rolling and Greenland rolling style.
I just downloaded the DVD’s last week! Been watching it and I felt like I completely rushed into he whole process.. feel like I need to slow down and not develop bad habits but I think I already did 😅😱 I still need to do a session with you! Will contact you soon as I can!
@@Fishaholicboy Hope to see you soon~
