LOSING motivation for Kayak Rolling

  • I feel like I'm losing motivation for kayak rolling... it gets frustrating when you don't see much progress but sometimes, we need to take a step back and reflect and manage our expectations.
    We should all celebrate the small wins and that's how I will be approaching my kayak rolls in the future.
    So many people have asked me to change my kayak to learn proper Greenland rolls.. I would invest in a proper Greenland kayak but storage is always an issue. So instead, I am going to learn as much as I can on the Pakayak first!

    Great to watch the many types of roll, and a few ways a person can mess up.

      Thanks Ron! I think I messed up way more than I actually rolled 😂

    I am in the same struggle. Honestly, you don’t need a roll to enjoy paddling. But it feel so nice to have it. Enjoy the journey.

      Very true that.. but funny enough, I really enjoy the rolling component and maybe because I just love swimming too. Sometimes I need to stop and just enjoy the moment. Just saw your channel.. will watch your videos tonight!

    Glad that you developed a very good habits and attitudes for your self learning!

      Hey Woody! It's been a fun process but also quite difficult. I definitely need a positive attitude to keep going :)

    Now you got it! As @IamNothing is suggesting learn how to do the standard roll on both sides before progressing to new rolls. You might try to have a cheap sleeping pad rolled up and between your knees and deck as a kind of masik. As you said, learning how to roll can be very frustrating but you are well on your way now.

      I just saw the comment from IamNothing and I think it’s a great idea! I definitely need to find a better way to get better contact.. thanks for the tip!

    I love to go out to explore, play near the rocks and caves... Mess around with rescues and rolls while laughing and playing. Skills seem to improve incidentally as opposed to intentional focus for me.... For me, a good result for a session is if I have laughed a lot!

      I love the positivity in what you're saying. Definitely makes sense that the skills will improve if you're put in the situation being forced to learn. It does sound like a much better way to learn.. it's great that you have a strong group of people to kayak with to support each other!

    Was talking to a guy who teaches rolling and he said he personally finds diminishing returns the longer he practices. When he first gets on the water he is good for maybe 30mins practicing rolling and thats enough because after that you get sloppy the longer you go so your choice towards the end of the video to go paddle was wise. Something else that I think is more important after watching my experienced paddle buddies is good low/high braces. With a solid low/high brace you might never have to roll unless you wanted to of course. Another interesting thing is one guy I know teaches rolling all the way around but another guy believes in teaching rolling from the same side and what I mean is you fall backwards and then roll up on the same side as opposed to going in on one side and coming up on the other. There is no doubt you are getting better and better.Cheers.

      @Fishaholicboy  Před 2 lety +2

      What you say about diminishing really makes sense.. after a while, I just get tired and demotivated if I don't see any progress and then moved on to a roll that I could do which eventually got me all motivated again. Great points about rolling on the same side.. What I need to do is try rolling on my other side too to get more accustomed and build muscle memory so I can do it either side.

    You are too hard on yourself, your progress is excellent. You have a solid back deck roll & no wet exits. Good decision to reward yourself with a trip.

    • @Fishaholicboy
      @Fishaholicboy  Před 2 lety +1

      Thanks David! Not doing wet exits is probably one of the main reason I was happy that day.. I think I needed to stop and just realise that's already an improvement :)

    Another great video! I was practicing my rolls the other day and kept rolling twice… ugh. I saw your double roll and thought to myself, “yup that’s a thing.”Nice work!

    • @Fishaholicboy
      @Fishaholicboy  Před 2 lety +1

      Yes, double roll is a thing even if it's not intentional! haha. I need to learn to brace when I get back up to stop me from rolling again unintentionally.

    Looks better and better, good to know that you stil have fun. Maybe it will help to master the "basic" roll on both sides first and after that go furter with other rolls.

    • @Fishaholicboy
      @Fishaholicboy  Před 2 lety +2

      That’s a great suggestion! I definitely should do that.. I think it will take some time for me to get the muscle memory but it’s a great project!

    I love watching your videos. I’m new to kayaking myself and it’s nice to see you post your failures along with your successes. I have yet to try rolling, but watching you practice is motivation to not give up even if it’s not as easy as some make it look.

      @Fishaholicboy  Před 2 lety +1

      We can do it together and document the progress! I can't see the kayak you're on in your profile pic as it's quite small.. what kayak are you using?

  • @konun1715
    @konun1715 Před 2 lety +1

    It is good to see you are making progress.
    One thing I'd like to talk about is the thigh brace.
    The thigh brace you are using is made of foam, right?
    I think it is not that strong enough to support your leg movement, so it doesn't seem like easy for you to produce the strong hip snap, which is essential in rolling.
    I found a guy who made some interesting upgrade over pakayak thigh brace on youtube.
    Just type "pakayak thigh brace upgrade".
    Hope you get some of what you want.

      I saw the video too and am keen to try.. except I’m not so good with my hands so I’m worried about drilling holes in the kayak 😅 I definitely need better contact and also stopping me slip out all the time!

  • @binkytheeimperfectunprofes6770

    Honestly I'm afraid to try that & I thought you needed a skirt & what about having a pfd on which would make it harder!!!??? But congrats on your success at it, it seems scary!!!

    Hi and thanks, Fishaholicboy for sharing. I tickled 👍1st. I can feel your frustration. But all successors endure those processes as if a competitive swimmer tries to mark their goal, 1/100 second. Our brain and body take time to sink in all your new skills. ---1;35. You may develop "6-pack" -ectus abdominal muscle at the end. I like you really look into your weakness, not ignorance. Wonderful documentation. Well done and keep coming. 🙋‍♀🙋‍♀🛶🛶

    I was wondering if you know of any good budget kayak paddles for my wide tucktec? Also, do you know or have a video on how to upgrade the seat in a tucktec and what seat to use? The seat in mine always comes off of just leans back too much even when tightened.

    • @Fishaholicboy
      @Fishaholicboy  Před 2 lety

      I use the seaflo paddles alot with my Tucktec (link: amzn.to/3OUAYis). I actually haven't changed the seat for the Tucktec but I've seen alot of people change their seats in the official Tucktec Facebook Group. The group is here: facebook.com/groups/267243452020461/
