    After sighting in at 60 feet, I could easily cover 5 shots with a nickel czcams.com/users/postUgkxQt2uORDRfFOVSrO4idv4B90ThT6EOnEL ! Truly a pleasure to shoot! Scope was easy to adjust for eye relief. Only problem the varmints must have seen it delivered lol!Update: So impressed with shot groups at 30 yards I purchased a Hammers 3×9 with adjustable Objective scope! Now a true nail driver!

    I have had my Ruger 17 WSM for a year now. The more you shoot it the better the accuracy. Even though Ruger rifles shoot good right out of the box, it still takes about 100 rounds to get them tuned in. I always shoot the Winchester brand ammo and I get a lot of tight groups. And a lot of woodchucks. One shot is all it usually takes. And it isn't as loud as larger caliber rifles, so if there are more than on woodchuck in the field it doesn't scare them off as easy. I do recommend using a bore snake rathe than a rod to clean them. I highly recommend this rifle for anyone that likes to hunt varmints.

      It's an interesting calibre. I just sold mine to a mate who really wanted my rifle lol, so I'm now waiting for Winchester to make a 204 or 22 WSM. I'd love to have something in a WSM rimfire that pushes a decent 35-40gr pill for varmint hunting...

    Beautiful rifle man. Great review. Theres nothing like a old school walnut stock!!! Im glad Ruger is still offering rimfire rifles with walnut instead of only synthetics. I just cant bond with a rifle that feels like a plastic toy. When you buy the Ruger you get a quality rifle thats on the same level as its centerfires. Other brands seem like they cheap out on rimfire rifles.

    Excellent review. It's 4/6/21 here I'm in Delaware and after seeing this I think I'll buy the Ruger. After owning a number of 77/22's I've found you must install the Volquartson trigger kit. It'll take your pull from about 5lbs to 2 or 2-1/2 which is a big deal. If this guy had the better trigger I'm sure his groups would be smaller.. The Savage is much cheaper than Ruger and usually more accurate but I just can't get used the looks of a Savage bolt. Probably after he shoots about 500 rounds his barrel will settle down and his groups will get better. Again, excellent review from a real Pro.

    It's easy to increase the spring loading in the magazine by loosening the nut on the end and turning up the tension. That should easily force up the next round when cycling the bolt.

      I was thinking that maybe some of the rounds are hotter than others. Certainly the sound seemed varied between some of those rounds. This may have simply been location of slightly different backgrounds whilst melon shooting. I've shot a couple of pigs with mine at relatively close ranges 20 metres. One dropped instantly the other ran about 20feet. Was surprised by the projectile penetration. Close range stalking it seems fine. I've even shot other wild biar with larger calibres and had them run. I guess it just depends on what's going on once the projectiles have hit. Id have to shoot 20-30 more before coming to a conclusion regarding the calibres capabilities. But is an explosive little round!

    Nice review! I would HIGHLY recommend upgrading the trigger if you haven't already. I upgraded to the Jard 2lb trigger in mine and it's a whole new rifle. You will no longer see those fliers like you are getting due to the terrible Ruger factory trigger. Mine shoots a ragged hole 6 shot group with the 20 Grain Hornady at 100 yards all day. Also, the ammo is very cheap when buying in bulk on Gunbroker. I recommend searching as it can be found for less than a quarter a shot ($0.25)

    Well now, I have to say I am impressed with Ruger in general but not the performance of this ammunition. I thought for certain, that there would have been tighter groups than that. Especially as you used a bipod !
    I just this past week, took delivery of my new Savage 25 Walking Varminter with 20`barrel. It`s chambered in .223, so I`m looking forward to range time with this.
    Last time we `chatted` Ozzie, I had a Weatherby ordered, but the dealer couldn`t get delivery delivery for another 2 to 3 months, so I opted for the Savage. Time will tell if I made the right decision.

    I suggest that you review the CZ 455 three barrel combo as I think it would be a practical rifle to have as you interchange calibers easily. Not only is it accurate on all barrels, but can be very economic with having the three calibers on the one gun. I have ordered one, reviews I have seen so far have no real negatives ones to be honest. I'd love to see your opinion on the rifle at least. Thanks

    Awesome review as always Ozzie and keep sticking it to those Greens. As a thought, any chance you might be reviewing the CZ455 Multi Barrel package (.22LR, .22Mag, .17HMR)? I used to love the old Brunos and have had my eye on the multi barrel combo for a while now as a great little bunny buster with the .22LR with the option to swap out to one of the mag barrels for foxes/cats. The locking mechanism for the barrels looks nice and solid too and easy to change out, but I'd love to see a review from yours truly to make my mind up. Keep up the good work!

    I am in The USA, and i am interested to know what are your gun laws there? I have heard all sorts of different things. So i would like to know from someone that lives there.
    The Savage is an excellent gun for the money (it has a better trigger and its adjustable compared to the Ruger IMO), you can buy there here in the US for $289 USD. all you need to do to make them shoot spot on is buy a new stock for $130 USD AND bed it in. The factory one is very flimsy. Another interesting fact is here our magazines are 8 rounds
    Just info you may be interested in (ammo prices here):
    Winchester 17WSM $13.28USD
    American Eagle 17WSM $17.00USD
    TIP: Bed that barrel in and you will get rid of those flyers.

      @zaccy Před 3 lety +1

      Having been to the states for a while and come back, our laws are pretty strict in comparison. You can get access to firearms but only have access to limited categories and and it is generally rather time consuming waiting for license clearances and waiting for weapon permits to clear. Basically no semi auto rifles unless you run a pest control business or you are a primary producer(farmer). Pistols are allowed but they can only be taken to and used at a range and you must go to a pistol shoot a few times a year to maintain the license depending on the state. If you get caught with a pistol anywhere but at a range, you are basically cooked and the consequences are substantial. Different states have different laws regarding magazine capacity, adjustable stocks and weapon appearances. Some states are so strict that if your gun looks too scary or "tactical" then it can basically be confiscated or the model will be outright banned even if its just a bolt gun. Recently lever action shotguns in one of our states were reduced down to a 5 round capacity. Police will do random gun checks with a 24 hour notice and will come onto your property to inspect all your firearms are accounted for and check the integrity of your safe along with all safe storage procedures (bolt removed, ammo stored in separate safe/locked compartment). Our firing ranges are also pretty strict with most if not all ranges I've been to only allowing you to load a single round into your rifle at a time. Suppressors are categorized as military weapons and few states will give an exemption which is rare so plenty of farmers and shooters end up with some degree of hearing loss.

    • @zaccy
      @zaccy Před 3 lety +1

      Just to give you an idea of how strict gun laws are, gel blasters in some states (which shoot a hydro gel bal) and BB guns in all states are classified as firearms because of the speed at which the projectiles leave the barrel. Even the nerf gun toys are reduced in power with weaker springs when sold in australia as we get different models.

      s Can
      Well, I took the bolt out and polished it on a electric buffing wheel I had bolted to my bench, used light sandpaper on the underside where the finish is pretty rough to smoothen the cartridge insertion. Stripped the whole action and degreased it of the chines packing oil (which is greasy junk),lightened the trigger by undoing a small screw to the rear of the trigger very lightly, just to make it not as heavy as the standard model (which is very heavy). Polished the sear, sandpaper'd the rest of the metalwork where I saw fit, used tyre-shine on the nylon stock and ran over 100 rounds of CCI standard velocity through the barrel to get it shooting right AND smoothen the cycling.
      Basically apply TLC.

    The stock trigger can be greatly improved. The sear engagement angle is wrong, that can be stoned to a proper angle and engagement reduced. As with many newer guns the trigger pushes the striker further back before it releases. Lawyer BS to avoid liability. Great, well made little guns otherwise, The mag is the chintziest part.

    I have a 17 ack, they are a great fox rifle, however there Achilles heel is always barrel fouling, 17 Rem were worse, it was not unusual to have to clean it every 5 or six shots, 17 Hornets and 17 ack were better but 10 shots then a clean was the norm. To test a 17 properly you really need to clean it before each lot of ammo. Your group size should be about the size of a 5 cent piece. In the end it's far easier to go 222, 223 or 22-250, saves taking cleaning gear around the paddock!

    How is the trigger on your Ruger, I've read that a lot of people are switching triggers due to rough trigger pull. The last group you showed with the Hornady V-Max is more consistent with my experience with the Hornady that I'm Firing out of my B-Mag. I know you said that you've heard issues with the Savage and I've seen where others have too, but guess I got really lucky with mine. I really love the >17 WSM and hopefully it works out for you.

      Yeah it's rough and heavy from the factory so a good polish up is definitely on the agenda :) Because of the ammo price, I've decided to stick with the Winchester 20gr ammo, so I will work on that. If I can continue to shoot under an inch @ 100 yards, I'm happy, if I can shoot under an inch @ 200 yards, I'll be even happier!

    I would much rather have an ugly tack driver than a pretty gun that groups like a shotgun, there's no point to having these superior ballistics if you cant hit anything.
    Guns 50 years ago could shoot this good and sometimes better, surely with modern technology things should have improved.

      @ozziereviews  Před 8 lety

      If you're into reloading - sure... but then theres the other side of it too, this cartridge allows more energy for rimfire firearm categories under our licensing here. i.e. Category-C being semi-auto rimfire up to 10 rounds, where's a semi-auto 17hornet would be Category-D which is out of reach for 99% of Australian shooters...

      +ozziereviews G'day, thanks for replying, distance will be anywhere between 30 yards (shooting from underneath in trees) to around 150 yards for more flighty ones that you can't get any closer to

    • @ozziereviews
      @ozziereviews  Před 8 lety +1

      Ok a few things to consider...
      The 17 whether it is a HMR, WSM or Hornet will easily take birds of any description, it just comes down to the distance and accuracy to make the shot count. If you were only shooting up to 100 yards, I'd be going for the HMR as it's the cheapest of the lot to run and the ammo is plentiful. Whilst the WSM will EASILY take birds out beyond 150 yards, the accuracy may fail with the ammo that I have tried so far. Its a fussy calibre to play with but I enjoy the challenge all the same. You could go to the 17 Hornet but only if you reload, the reason I say this is because it is really expensive to buy the ammo for, but to re-load it'll be just as cheap as 17HMR ammo to run. The other thing with the hornet is you'll be able to experiment with basic loads to best suit the distance you're shooting. So mate my honest thoughts would be go for the 17HMR if you're really going to be shooting no more than 100 yards (i know people will say they can shoot 200 yards with theirs but with what accuracy and especially with some wind) or just get yourself a 17 hornet and re-load to have the widest options with projectiles, accuracy and capability... hope that helps?

    The .17 WSM velocity of rounds can vary by 200 fps, that will cause "flyers". It would be better to shoot 100 rounds of each ammo type to get a better idea of bullet accuracy. I suspect bullets that produce tighter groups have a lower fps variance, and probably reflect factory quality control. There are other things that cause wide grouping, however, cavedweller1959 has a video regarding variance. ... I have a CZ American, I think it is a 452 in .17 HMR - I have not shot it in years, I am disabled. However, I have shot groups 5/8" max spread, 5 shot group at 100 yards. Sometimes 3 of the rounds would touch or cut into each other. My problem was the scope, I could not always see the center of the target, the scope was under powered for precision work, and I cannot replace it because a friend of mine installed it and torqued the flat head screws so tight neither of us could remove the scope rings without damaging something. In any event, if I was able to see it, I could shoot the eye out of a squirrel at 100 yards. [I am a former member USAMU. You should be able to do a search to find them if you are not familiar.]

      I have stopped using my 77-22 (hornet) in favor of my 77-17 (17wsm) for a multitude of reasons. Mainly for the cost savings and vastly superior trajectory (shoots out of this world flat), but I have also grown fond of how quiet it is considering what it's capable of. It's definitely more quiet than my hornet rifle with the initial report, and the crack is roughly the same believe it or not. I really don't see the sense in shooting a .22 hornet anymore as you can achieve similar performance with the 17 WSM, albeit much cheaper and with much greater accuracy (in my opinion).

      +lindsay cooper My view is if people want to fill the gap between the 22lr and the 223, the 17WSM has advantages, it's a lot quieter than the 223 (just a tad over the noise of the 22mag) and it has way more energy than the 22, 22mag, 17hmr but not as much as the 223, so if you want to take foxes or other similar game without the echoing of the 223 shot noise but want way more punch than the 22, I think it's an interesting calibre...

    Poor groups indeed! If they're like that at 100 yards, they'll be far worse than double that size at 200 yards! He's using a cheap scope, likely made in Southeast Asia, so there's a decent chance it's because the scope has parallax problems. I'd try using another scope before getting rid of the rifle. I've owned several Model 77's and they were all pretty accurate. In fact, one in 220 Swift was equal to most accurate gun I've ever owned, including many with custom barrels.
    Another thing: DO NOT SHOOT down a road! Even if it looks deserted! Make sure of your backstop! I've had incidents where people come out of nowhere and your attention is focused on looking through your scope.

      @ozziereviews  Před 6 lety

      A couple of things Will... firstly your comment about shooting down a road and making sure of your backstop, you do realise that this is my own private property don't you? My farm has roughly 4-500 yards of backstop where I sight in my firearms which is the side of a mountain. Even the heaviest of calibres have no chance of getting through that. Secondly, yes I agree the accuracy isn't what I'd like but every 17WSM rifle seems to shoot the same, there is always a group with 1 or 2 fliers for some reason. I have used this scope on other rifles and shot very well with it so I know it's not the scope, it is this calibre unfortunately...
