there are a lot of good survivalists out there, but most of them are quiet reserved hunting guides, fisherman, and a lot are just loners that like to be alone in the woods. not many people like that actually like to talk to a camera and be a public figure. most survivalists that you see in the popular media are just adrenaline/danger junkies with a camera that are basically filming a long format red-bull stunt. Les is one of the few that is both a good survivalist and a good filmmaker/public figure.

Depending on your skill level, you're probably not going to be bored until you get a system set up for water and food, and a shelter that is comfortable. And by that point you're more likely than not going to be rescued. Otherwise you're injured or have no skills, which likely means a slow death.

To be honest it annoys me how much and how many people underestimate cars in a survival situation.I have seen some survival movies where their car breaks down and they just leave it.
Looking at the thing itself, it’s a shelter you don’t have to build and I think a pretty good one because they often have cushions, good for sleeping, it’s also fairly strong and have usually some indirect insulation. Also you drive on the road, meaning you will have it beside the road, obviously people pass by the road and could help. Also you can just fit lots of stuff inside.

For anyone who is driving in winter, even in the city, or out of city limits, dress like you're going to walk. My dad's best advice. Even if it's just a coat with gloves and hat tucked in the sleeve, thrown into your trunk or backseat, and you think you wont need it. It never hurts to have and you'll thank yourself for having it when your car breaks down and you arent totally freezing and bound to your car-coffin.

Some things I keep in my car kit:
Power bank for jumping car/charging batteries
Electric tire pump with car charger adapter
      Tire plug kit
Blanket & towel + warm clothes & snow gloves
      Snow chains
      Flares
Trauma kit for life threatening blood loss, includes shears & knife (and many other things like splints, chest seals, glass punch, antiseptics, etc)
      Water/food
      Flashlight+headlamp.
Keep in mind it’s a sedan and I don’t offend or go into wilderness, this is mainly to survive overnight and get myself back on the road given my very limited knowledge of cars. Is also for car accidents. Recently had to use trauma kid for major blood loss of my dog, get yourself an IFAK. Look up skinnymedic on CZcams. Also, a story. Was driving a rental car after my car was totaled in an accident. Got a flat on highway 20 between grass valley and highway 80, it is complete wilderness. It rained then snowed hard and got dark. Roads entirely frozen. Jacked up the car and went to change the tire. Lug nuts had security locks on them, and no key to be found. Tow truck almost couldn’t make it to me do to thick ice on roads, took about 4-5 hours to make it out. He was going to turn around, but decided to keep going one more mile when he found me. This is basically in the middle of the forest, no civilization for many many miles. Temperature was probably like 10 degrees F. The lesson I learned was that 3 standard flares are not enough. I now carry a backup set of LED ones. Imagine if I hadn’t had the sense to put my kit into the rental car! If you are taking a rental car, bring your kit!!

As someone who lives in the mountains in california..yes yes yes. This winter it got down to about 17° at night. This summer it got up to 101° so far and we're just getting started. My car holds heat like crazy and we dont have working A/C right now so our trips are miserable but I keep a gallon of water in the car at all times. What I keep it in changes. That water has been more than useful. The types of snacks, meds, etc that I keep change too. Most meds expire or dont function properly if stored for a few days or more above 90°. So I become far more reliant on peroxide and gauze, and peppermint tea or ginger ale sodas. Fortunately I havnt had any emergencies but ive avoided several by being prepared.

@@Jennyfisch You've hit the nail on the head there. I've never gone without food for anything *like* that long, never more than a day (all due respect to Taurius for getting through that)... However, I have been stationary for months on end due to illness and it feels *awful* when your muscles decide that they're more useful as ingredients than as muscles. It feels like there's something gnawing at your life force, assuming that your life force is centred in your legs (which, being a skier, didn't feel all that far off).
Also, maybe goes without saying, but Taurius is, as far as I'm aware, *not* representative of most people's physiology. Three weeks is the traditional time limit; I don't know what the survival rate is for eleven days further but I don't think it'd be high. Again, just major respect for the kind of psychological strength it takes to keep going in amongst that, though I know it might not have felt that way at the time.

For a survival kit I think everybody has to start somewhere. So, buying an off the shelf kit can be a good start and other than buying the most expensive one people who are starting don’t always know what’s good and what’s not.
To me you may as well buy a kit and then just use what’s in it as you learn and gain the skills to use the tools. Then you can find what you like and don’t and be able to make better choices so you can put your own kit together.
One thing to consider is also that some off the shelf kits come with a really nice case. Might be worth buying the kit for the case when you get your own kit together.

Second, eating rotten things, at least for me, will get me food poisoning (I've experienced that more than once). Won't that make my situation worse?

I ironically though as a teenager used to watch survivorman so often that I carried a massive bin full of my own survival kit stuff in the trunk of my tiny little car. My dad used to make fun of me for it but boy did it save us when we were stranded in the woods after my car broke down while we were hunting. Although now I carry a CB radio in my Jeep lol so no more getting stranded lol

in regards to the Toilet Paper question, in the USA the "MULLEN" plant is the best TP. its a large leafy plant with tiny velvet soft hairs on it. its great as TP, and it also has quite a few medicinal properties if its turned into tea, eaten, or dried and smoked, but ive only ever used it at TP. just bring a roll of TP with the carboard tube taken out and compress it. dont rely on trying to find plants lol.

I'm not a survivalist in the prepper way but I used to travel quite a bit as a one night stand musician. The car(van) survival kit has literally saved my life once and modern literally two more times. Take items to stay warm at night. In the traveling musician business you might be in burning Arizona on Tuesday and the Dakotas Thursday night. Water, Sleeping Bag, Navy or Army Wool blankets a few bic™ lighters to start, then high fat potted meat & crackers. NO CONTRABAND LIKE POT OR GUNS EVER, or you will miss that high paying wedding or big OR use all the money to bail the bassist out of jail on Monday.
    Edit: Never missed a gig.

little note on what bear did, a lot of people in the british military will stand by nearly everything he says in it, because he was actually trained how to survive situations like that, and even did, the reason he didnt actually go through it all in the show was because he didnt actually need to go through it entirely to explain what to do, much like how when teaching some one how to bake bread or hammer a nail, you dont have to bake an entire loaf or build an entire house

Talking about car survival, one tip: whenever you regularly inflate your other 4 tires, always inflate your spare. I had to put my spare on once, but it was also flat, so I completely ruined the rim of the spare.
