      Jill Tarter is the poster child for UFO denialism in the scientific community. Avi Loab dressed her down on a UFO panel one time calling her out on her dismissive disrespectful comments about the tic tac and pilots. it was glorious to watch Avi take her to task. We need more of that kind of pushback. People need to stand up to Jill and the other UFO denialists in the scientific community.

      I don't think there's a huge need to be worried. You'd expect that once you can surmount the technical hurdles to travel faster than light or to develop the AI that will scour the galaxy for resources, that you would have little need to devote attention to upending life on a nascent civilization's planet. It's just like an ecosystem at the bottom of the ocean, we know they exist and we could get to it, but the only way we'd really interact is that the by-products of our actions affect you. e.g. a ship sinks. Further, if your lifespan is equivalent to a few months most individuals would probably never see or remember an occurrence of a sinking ship.

      There are some highly respected scientists that think we should hide our existence for that very reason. They think if we let aliens know we're here they will enslave or destroy us. Stephen Hawking was one of those people. It's based on the observations of humans. Think about what sort of things the US classified. Technological details, troop movements, capabilities and limitations of their equipment, WMD technical info. If any of those went public it wouldn't cause the fraction of the problem that this kind of discovery would. It'd lead to religious conflicts, an unprecedented scale of panic, protests, wars, civil wars and basically the potential collapse of our entire infrastructure. If they ever discover aliens I really hope they keep it a secret because it would literally end civilization as we know it if this information became public knowledge.

    • @stonescorpio
      @stonescorpio Před 4 lety +31

      It's not so much that scientists are assuming that all life must need water, but the universe is so vast that we really need to play the odds game.
      If you have a thousand unexplored planets and only a handful that have liquid water, it makes sense to look for life on those first. There could be some other life-sustaining substance that different alien species rely on (maybe a gas if they live on gas giants?), but for our purposes it makes sense to focus on a set of factors that we *know* can give rise to life rather than factors that we *speculate* could give rise to life.
      That's my take on it, anyway.

      The truth is: they're not looking for life, they're looking for a planet where we can go when the Earth becomes no longer berable.
