HOW TO MANUAL A BIKE OVER 40. The video I wish a saw BEFORE I started!

I learned how to manual a bike over 40. Way over 40 at 57 years old. It took me two years to learn how to manual! So I'm not some expert. I'm just a guy who loves all things bike and really wanted to figure out how to do a nice long manual. Not the regular trail manual or a pump track between rollers kind of manual but a sustained manual. You know what I'm talking about. Now that I have an OK manual. Not the greatest but it's decent. I wanted to do a vid that includes the tips I wish I had BEFORE I started and BEFORE I broke my bum a couple times. So this is it.
NOTE: A BIG MTB IS A DIFFERENT TECHNIQUE. I'LL PROBABLY COVER THAT IN ANOTHER VIDEO.

Lots of fun and I enjoy the content aimed at the older generations. We have more fear, experience, and heal slower.

I am 37 and ate shit on a manual a week ago, my tail bone still hurts :( but I have been back on it most days and am getting better slowly.

It’s an awesome challenge to give yourself. Wheelie video out this Thursday.
Yes dude! I’m 41. Learning dirt jumping since building a few jumps for my kids during lockdown last year and totally getting the bug. Landed on my back a few weeks back manualing and it still hurts but hey, you only live once. I’m not giving up.

Ahh, sun's out riding weather Abound. Setting goals. 54, and gonna get good at this before 60👍👍👍😂
I'm 40 gonna be 41 this month. Started riding again after I lost my family and it's total therapy, something that takes the world outta me. Thank God for his presence in my life and his awesome creation of bikes👍♥️
My heart goes out to you brother. I have lost people close to me and the bike has always been a saving grace for me too. Sending love from Colorado!
God didn't create bikes, what a stupid comment
I'm with you bro. Total therapy riding bikes. And I get what you mean about God creating bikes - that God gave someone a brain to design and build bikes. Keep giving thanks.
Sorry for your loss. Hopefully you can find the peace that surpasses all understanding.
After I lost my wife I definitely needed the slow calm quiet of the outdoors. I found comfort in surfing, skiing and dirt biking but you can't do it every day and it's expensive running around.
Since I got into e mountain bikes it's now easy to ride every day. The magic carpet has just enough power to be fun but more forgiving than a motorcycle.
Now I am scouring Google Earth for new undiscovered singletrack and ways to connect areas into megaloops plus making a few secret tracks of my own.
Fun is the only natural cure for sadness and loss.
Be careful because you can't judge speed when it's silent but I would highly recommend giving it a try.
It's like living in your own private Idaho!
God don’t make no bicycles, people do. 😂
Yes! Great bits of advice! I learned manuals 20 years ago when I was 15 and I'm still learning every day I go out for a ride.
I'd only add one thing: always give your brain and your body a break each 10 min of practice. Stop for a minute or distract yourself doing something different. Your entire body uses this moment to "metabolise" what you've practiced and right after it puts the new information into work.
Super good add! I try not to ever do the same thing longer than 20 min and on the BMX it’s usually a lot less because there are so many potential distractions with other features. I think a vid that’s about all these little learning hacks would be great.
Totally agree on giving short breaks in between and not getting fatigued out.... specially when you are over 40..... giving short breaks really keep thing moving for a long time with more fun.
41 years old. It took me 3 years to learn manuals. Best advice I have that no one ever mentions is to drop your back foot as you pull back. It kind of helps scoop up the bike and makes balancing much easier.
I've watched 1 video with someone saying to drop the back heal.
It was Tom Cardy.
He was teaching his girlfriend how to manual.
@@insanewayne75 Wish I had seen that video first. It would have saved me a lot of time. Lol
The problem is that you have to be pretty fit and chances are, if you're just learning this at 40+, you're probably riding in the first place to get fit.
@@springbloom5940 I am 38, and although I've been riding for more than 20 years, bmx as a teen, mtb for the past 10, I've never managed to do manual. Most people struggle with balancing, I struggle with getting to that point. I am not affraid to ride fast DH, with jumps, but the moment my front wheel gets a foot or so in the air, my brain gets in panic mode. The more I try, the more my panic reaction gets imprinted into my brain. So it is not a matter of try, and being older without manual skills, does not mean you are not experienced and fit. The first tip, learn to loop out is not relevant to me, because I cannot fall on my back even on a bmx. Part if the problem, I think, is that I am quite short, 5'5" with short arms and legs.
@@springbloom5940 That's where I am at right now. I have another... 6 months before I am really ready to try working on "mountain biking skills" beyond working my arse off on the pump tracks.
Sometimes I feel bad for learning this at 46 but looking at you, you look totally bad ass. “good for the soul,” indeed!
when you have gray hair...and goes through life so much, doing manuals cuts off some 15-20yrs, I feel 20 after a good manual 😂🤘
You’re right. Manuals may be the fountain of youth.
Yeah to you loop one and feel 20 years older! 👴🏼
@@mclmm7494 FOR SURE!!!
youll surely feel like 20 back in college after a bunch of 15 year olds beat your gray ass up for cutting them off
So pleased to stumble across this channel. I love my bikes but really love the play-bikes, like bmx & trials, the most. This is such helpful stuff as I watch my 55th birthday drift into history. Wrinkly Riders unite!
Same just found this channel an the comment section is rad
I'm 58. Last winter I practiced manuals many times in a manual machine and it on the bike. I never got to where I could hold one for now than a few feet but I did find I could save a lot of mud on my face by doing a two foot manual over mud puddles on the trail!
Even a short manual is super handy on trail. We may do a vid that will help you add to the manual you’ve got.
This is awesome 😎 how long can you go
Just turned 35 and bought a new bmx after putting it down for about 10 years. Never dialed manuals back then, but I'm determined to now as an old dude! Thanks for this!
Thanks for remembering us old guys. And yes, manuals suck to learn.
Hahaha. You’re welcome!
I'm only 24 and can manual pretty well, but I still loved this video! I hope I'm as cool as you guys when I get older.
But honestly, I'm not a believer in learning with a small bike - for two reasons: On a larger bike (Trail or Enduro) the correct technique is much more important and you will have to learn it first in order to manual at all, where as with the small bike you can sort of cheat yourself and get away with improper technique that won't work on the big bike. Second, a bigger bike is heavier and has a longer wheelbase and thus will react slower to your inputs when balancing. It will feel less snappy and you could say that is more forgiving to beginners.
Great video. Thanks for the tip summaries.
Love the attitude!!!
A lot of great mtb channels out there. This one is probably the most relatable. Haha 😆 Great vid!

Heck yeah. Start on grass or dirt even for the first few loop outs.
In your opening…you stated, “this is the how to manual for over 30’s, over 40’s and over 50’s”- shit- don’t stop there….I’m 61 and still wheeling and moto-x after all these years….damn, I hate being left out-ha
Bravo! Great Job!
Great job I really like your instruction
Looping out when trying to learn the manual (at an advanced age) is the best advice I have yet seen in any how-to-manual tutorial. For weeks I was too afraid to lean back and use the brake to save me from falling on my back, because my 50-year-old brain kept reminding me of like 5-10 things that might happen if I fail. I went even one step further and practiced looping out in a freshly mowed meadow that still had all the hey laying around. That was "save enough" for my brain to finally let me lean back, lift that handlebar and kick out. It took me about 2 hours to finally get it done smoothly, but that's a big accomplishment for me. Now it's on to step 2...
Well done!!!
I think this applies to learning most skills: learn how to fail first. Learn how it feels like, then you will have found your limits; anything within that limit is not scary and therefore possible.
I’m 71 and just started BMX. It’s to improve my mountain bike skills and build endurance. I’m watching tons of CZcams videos on MTB and Velosolutions built a small track in our town park!! Hopefully I’ll improve.
I'm 33 and started yesterday. Glad I found this video. Much appreciated!
Really appreciated this! I’m 41 and have been working on this for about 9 months and realise there’s another few years of practise in it! Was encouraging to see you guys admitting it takes dedication practise and determination too. Definitely wish there was more of people showing the hard yards and effort involved in obtaining these skills. I think you learn things better if you do them the slow and detailed way like that, rather than just rushing and achieving messy results!
So thanks guys!
They are monsterously hard but stick with it. Mine are okay. Sean's have continued to get better and they are nearly miraculous now!!!
Perfect video from me as I'm turning 64 this month! Recently switched to flat pedals after years of riding clipless because I wanted to practice bunnyhops, stoppies, and wheelies/manuals. Started really putting in the effort since summer 2020. Did several days of just dropping off the back and landing on both feet as you said (good advice!) starting to get the hang of it! Cheers from Tokyo!
Tokyo!!! Wow. Glad it helped!
This pumps me up. I hope I am still athletic in 20 years.

Best manual video ever thx
Loving this, as a 40 year old learning BMX I can tell you the youngsters don’t try and keep you safe 😆
No doubt!!
45 now, and most of tricks learned nearly 40 years ago, when started cycling. And am pretty pleased that no1 told me to stop at that time. Would literally break my self to pieces to learn those now. But better later then never..👍
Be open to looping out intentionally is golden advice. Even though I can wheeeeeeelie no probs, grabbing brake on manuals is my nemisis.
I wish wheelies were cool again. And x-ups.

Found this so helpful and relatable, thanks! Really great in depth tips! Getting into BMX as a 33 y/o female is pretty intimidating when you go down the park and it's all 20 y/o blokes flipping around! 😅
I get so nervous even trying looping out though - could this be practiced on grass?!? 🤔
I’ll bet it’s intimidating. I still get that feeling and sometimes I’ll go ride someplace else. Ha. Vibe matters!! But most people are super cool. Practice the loop in the grass for sure. Whatever makes you comfortable is great!!!

Now that you all covered how to manual on a bmx for those over 40, how about a follow up vid on how to manual on a big 29" mtb?

With I had my old one too. Actually saw one in a BMX museum. Didn't looks as good as i remembered. : )
As someone who broke my back learning to manual, I have a PSA: Do not do this on pavement. Do it on grass/dirt. Sure, he jokes about having a pillow, but I now ride with a back guard.
I'm 43 I was learning to ride bmx when I was 30 hit helps my knees then I moved in 2015 and didn't have a bike to ride, now I just got me a new bike by fix in late 2021 it's to cold to ride but it's getting warmer and being older this video helps me so much.
