Why start BMX Racing at 48 years old!?

  • While many people will say you are "never too old" to try a new sport, they don't sincerely mean it. There are certain athletic activities which are viewed as "weird" or "inappropriate" by society. While many people may think BMX is one of those sports exclusive to children, they would be surprised to learn the oldest age categories of BMX racing are over the age of 60. This video talks bout how Olympian Brooke Crain inspired me with a photo on the Haro website.

Oh man, I'm 46 and I've spent the last 4 years losing 120 lbs through diet and cycling. In back to my hs weight and just started skatepark riding on a dj bike. I enjoy your videos but the wisdom you threw at the end just blew me away. Even though I've been killing it (just completed a 100 km mtb marathon) and I'm immensely happy, I've been acting as though my best years are far gone, that my time has passed and even feeling slightly ashamed for learning tricks at my age. I can really relate to everything you said and your words at the end might just transform my outlook on life.

Thank you so much. That's a very kind comment. Every now and then, some jerk leaves a rude and crappy comment. I just delete those. But it's always so nice when someone leaves a positive and uplifting comment like you.
Congratulations on getting back in shape and I wish you many more decades of health and joy.

Man that’s incredible! I love reading things like this. Age is just a number, and it seems like a ton of it comes down to your mindset. People tend to stop having any fun as they get older, then complain that getting old sucks. Something about riding a 20” bike feels like the fountain of youth 🙃

    • @MaquinasDePalomitas

@@thomaslemon3971 I know man!!! The bike has been a life changer for me, I’m in my best health ever, met my best friend through cycling and when I’m bitter, anxious or down, even a quick ride on the bike will immediately change my outlook. Its like magic!! -“feels like the fountain of youth...” Amen and so true!!

I started racing in Sept 2020 at the age of 54. I'm now 55 and racing a 20" class bike. The bike I bought to race was the first BMX bike I've ever owned. I never had a BMX bike as a kid. It's been a blast so far. Thanks for the great video and inspiration to keep going.

A year of meeting people shaking their heads and asking "why are you doing it?", some just laughing...wasn´t always easy to keep a clear mind, good vibe and stand in the gate again. Thanks for the inspirational video I had no expectation of seeing today -- or ever!
I'm an old school BMX'er who started back around 1974 on an old Schwinn after watching On Any Sunday on tv. It wasn't until I saw a flyer for a race in the window of a 7-11 that I even thought organized races were a thing. That summer was my first race. BMX was my life and then I got into high school, grew to 6 ft tall, discovered Black Sabbath, and did some high school sports. My bike seemed too small and, well... child like. So, I stopped racing in 1982 and sold my PK Ripper to a neighborhood kid. I haven't been on any type of bicycle (except for a stationary one at the gym) since then. Sometimes I regret it.
Now I'm 56 years old and rather overweight. I'm back on the fitness wagon again, but BMX will always hold a place in my heart and that's why, when I decided a couple of weeks ago that I want a bike just to get into shape, I'm going to get a BMX style cruiser. Doubt I'll ever get on a track again, but it's fun to think about.

Once you get your BMX cruiser, I would encourage you to head out to a practice day your local track. Don't feel obligated to race. And definitely go VERY slow on your first lap. But it might feel pretty great to roll around the track again.
Thanks again for your comment and have fun on your new bike!

If you do get one, I recommend you get one with racing geometry. I tried some of SE bikes - flyers and big rippers and they felt like riding Pee Herman’s bike - a nice, smooth ride, but I didn’t even feel comfortable just hopping up and down curbs. Once I got on an actual racing bike, it felt like old times. Still got a lot of weight to lose before getting on a track, but I’ve been having a blast on the hike and bike trails

SE BIkes were my favorite back in the day. They were still fresh and had an exotic vibe about them. I'm definitely gonna look at them.
And yeah, I am really starting to get more deep into the BMX groove again. I have been looking at bikes, but the cost for a decent, race worthy bike (and I am serious about any machine I purchase) is crazy. I could buy a cheap bike made by Framed. But I would immediately start changing components, so a cheap bike is kind of pointless. Then there are the higher end bikes like Chase, Haro, and GT which have pretty decent XXL frames (I'm 6ft) but aren't over $1,000. My wife would kill me for spending over a grand on a bike when I haven't even ridden a track yet! I wouldn't blame her either.
My other option is to simply start piecing together a bike from what I have and add on better parts.
On Saturday, a guy on Facebook marketplace sold me two beat up bikes (Mongoose) that her found in an old storage unit. I'm looking at it as frames, wheels, and handlebars ready to go. Everything else can be trashed. I also was the recent recipient of a free (and very used) frame that I determined was a Fit Bike. That frame seems to be the best, so I'm going with that. I already stripped the crackhead spraypaint and will be prepping it for paint. It is also a more modern frame. I figure I can piece one together using a mix of old and new components and get my start with that. Later, as my fitness improves and my old BMX skills start coming back, I can justify buying something more worthy.

I turned 50 this year. I raced on a converted and strengthened folding bike as a kid (my parents couldn't afford an actual bmx). Then, after college friends got me into street/park bmx and rode that till I ended up in the hospital at 30 years old. But now, after 20 years, I've recently bought a second hand BMX and did some work on it to ride park again, because my little girl has taken up scootering (no scooter kid; she actually jumps and tricks). And instead of sitting around with other parents, decided to participate in the fun (again). Great bonding experience too. I'm the oldest guy on any kind of wheels at the park and having a ball 🤘

I'm 46 and just getting back into BMX. My Mongoose California GT (White out) was my most prized possession as a child. I always wanted to race (we had a local track, but I never signed up). I ended up giving my bike away to a neighbor who used it for parts when I became too tall to ride it...
Anyway, 30 years later... after doing a bit of road cycling with my wife (which I find pretty boring) I started to regain interest in BMX. There is a public BMX race track in my city and I've been riding it as much as possible on my dirt jumper. I'm still pretty terrible at jumping and my best ever attempt at a manual ended up with road rash... but I'm working on getting over the fear and I'm slowly getting more daring. The fear is real, I don't heal like I used to. I don't plan on ever racing, but if I could just ride the track well (clearing doubles and manualing through rollers) I would be happy.
I think there is a lot of us 40 sometimes out there that still loves BMX. We all lived on those bikes as kids and lets face it, those were some good times.
BTW, I just looked up my old bike and its worth over $6K today!!!! That's enough to buy the 2023 Chase Element Pro+ Cruiser I want, with thousands left to spare!!!

I can relate, as I'm 43 and considering racing BMX myself.
It's truly a wonder I've not done it sooner, as I live next door to a world-class BMX track, and have always been into bikes. I'm currently riding a 2013 DK Sentry 24" cruiser, but have had a bit of everything, from 20" freestyle to home built trike choppers. 2 bikes I really wish I had now are 1986/7 Jamis Laser 2001 and a Cyclecraft of unknown production year. Best wishes on the success of your racing career.

Thank you. I've had a heck of a lot of bikes too. These new 6061 aluminum race bikes are so much lighter and better than the old ones. My 2019 Chase Edge is literally about 21 pounds for the entire bike. Pretty amazing. I have a highly-overbuilt 2006 Haro Backtrail that is about 40 pounds. My Haro is like a tank and my Chase is like a sportscar.

  • @shokojimhollingsworth3940

Thanks!!! I'm 52 now and rode bmx all through my childhood. I got rid of my prized PK in college when it definitely wasn't "cool" to be a bmxer any more. I have regretted that mistake of "caring about what other people think" so many times in my life. I just got another sweet 20" bike this year and am having tons of fun relearning things, and learning tricks I couldn't do back in the day. (We now have youtube vids to help us! Back then we just had to send it and hope it went well!) Manuals, fakie, grinds- all stuff I never did. I'm so happy to be back at it, and again, I'm too old to care about whether it's cool or not, haha!

Just stumbled across this video while searching for old man bmx racing lol.
I gotta say, our stories are similar. I've always loved bmx since I was about 8 or 9 years old. A group of us kids would build sketchy ramps to jump, behind our apartment buildings. Jumped big clay hills and rode through the woods. Our bikes were our freedom. Never raced back then, we just couldn't afford it. But now, at almost 48, I've been bit by the bmx bug again. But this time, I want to race! I picked up a 2009 P.K. Ripper Team XLP a short while back that I'll be racing. I've been practicing the basics and will enter my first race when the weather cools down a bit. What made me want to do this? The exact description you gave of how you feel when racing your bike. It takes me back and I feel so alive!!! Your channel is what I've been looking for. I'll be watching!

I was 13 when I got my first BMX in '81 I raced for two years but developed some problems with my wrists and knees as I was still growing and the doctor told me I should stop racing. I was very proud to have learned tricks on my bike too as that was like a secondary skill to racing. I wish I could have carried on as it was the only sport I ever really got into. I am 54 now and I'd love to own a BMX again just to ride around and just enjoy it.
I have owned many BMX bikes that I restored to some extend and many mountain bikes as a means of transport to get to work etc. Never really got 'into' mountain biking as for me my mountain bikes were more a means of transport for commuting.

Early - mid 90s my dad, who took to me to training and race meets, would dismiss/criticise the vet class. But look at skiing, surfing, kite boarding, climbing...the list goes on. Kids and adults shred together. I just turned 39 and I’m about to start racing again after a 25 year hiatus. I’ll admit I’ve pretty active and have road cycled and ridden downhill in this period, but the mature muscle and explosiveness we have as adults over 35 is a great foundation for BMX. Do your squats, do your dead lifts, stretch regularly and do 10000 gate starts. 39, 49, 59 who cares..... eventually the jumps just become gaps in a sprint.

I'm 52 and I've been on a BMX bike since the early 80's. Although my old Quadangle got stolen from my front porch and didn't ride for a decade because I switched to skateboarding. Then my skateboard got stolen. In the early 90's I went back to BMX. I put together another Quadangle with my grandfather so I can bike around the UCLA campus. After I graduated I bought a SE/DC 24in cruiser. I was getting old for 20inch. Now I ride the MonsterQuad. 😂 I like riding cruisers only. I still have my race bike for sentimental reasons.

Yeah, a lot of the older guys all want me to get a cruiser, but I'm just not a fan. They are too big and awkward and bulky. I like sticking to the 20".

@@LearnBMXRacing If you see me pull up on a 20 inch 90's to 2000 era silver bullet Quadangle. That's me. I'll race that at the track. On the street or long rides I'm cruisin'. I did a 3 hour 25 mile ride to Santa Fe dam and back on a 20 inch and I'll tell you. You don't want to do that, unless you want to make a lot of stops and stretch your back. It's like a difference between a Ducati and a Harley. I give it 5 years and You'll have a set of bikes like a set of golf clubs. They all have a purpose.

OMG I hate CZcams 😂 I have just sent messages to two clubs (35 miles away) to see if they are happy for a 53 year old to rock up and race (based in UK). Now have to find a decent 1980 bmx race bike (none of this modern stuff 😮. Thanks for the video

And give the modern bikes a chance. They are so lightweight and fast, you might like them.

I wasn't allowed to race as a kid, (But somehow freestyle was okay,) and I always swore I would eventually start. When Orange Y closed a few years ago, I kind of gave up on ever racing BMX. But I just raced my first Dual Slalom race at Over The Hump a few weeks ago, and now at 49 years old, I am thinking of racing BMX to get better at Dual Slalom.

There are tons of other BMX tracks here in southern California. I have done video reviews on a bunch of them. Check out my main website and you'll see a map of tracks all over the USA. I would post a link, but I've had accounts ghost-banned for putting links in comments, so I don't do that anymore.

@@LearnBMXRacing, I discovered your channel through your other video, “Choosing your first BMX bike”, while doing research on bikes for my 7 y/o son. Long story short, he hates his $80 department store bike-for all the obvious reasons. But, why did I begin the search? It’s because I knew there was better. Back in 1984, my dad bought me a second hand GT BMX race bike and without any doubt, it was the best present he ever got me. I rode that bike like it was a part of me. It was more than just a mode of transportation. That bike was an adventure. Sadly, when I got older, my dad insisted that I get rid of it for a more “grown up” mountain bike. The mountain bike was cool. It had nifty gears and all that. But, it wasn’t until the novelty of the new bike wore off that I realised how much I missed my old bike. It was too late. That bike was gone. The idea of riding now became a mode of transportation and the “more mature thing to do” was ride a so-called “grown-up bike.” Fast forward about 30 years, I’m now looking to help my son get that same experience, joy, and adventure only a BMX race bike can provide. Then, there’s this video… A 48 years old that is starting racing? Dude, I’m 47 years old and you’ve ignited a spark that’s not wanting to let up! I want to sell my mountain bike and buy a pair of BMX bikes-one for my son, and one for me. We’ll ride and maybe even race together one day. It’ll be awesome. Again, thank you for providing some epic inspiration, brother!
