  • This is a complete breakdown and comparison of the cheapest vinyl replacement window you can buy from Home Depot and Lowe's here in New Jersey. If you are a do it yourself type of person looking to install affordable windows and aren't sure which ones to buy then this is your video.

    Let us know if you have other brands of windows you would like to see us breakdown and compare such as Andersen windows, Renewal by Andersen, Marvin, Pella windows, Simonton, Sunrise, Soft-lite, Okna or Jeld-Wen. Happy to do it if I can get my hands on them.

    Replacing 10 windows, already done 6 using the Pella 150's. Can't complain. Replaced 40 year old wood windows, some haven't opened in 30 years and the seal broke (on the 40 yr wood) and got all sorts of interesting mold patterns in between the glass. I'm at the point I can do 2 from start to finish in a day. Air nailer is a must. Biggest issue is no off the shelf fits the 40 year old openings, so I have to make the opening smaller. Will have some drywall work on the tops. I went with a wider top trim on the outside to cover the shorter window. Cost is about $550 per window, 54" x 36" including triming. Using PVC trim on the outside. Was quoted $1,600 per window. But in fairness that would be a custom window to fit perfectly. Using off the shelf I'm losing about 1" of glass height and width. But for $1,000 per window savings, I'm ok with that. The inside trim framing (box) I'm doing in one piece and painting on a really flat bench, then installing, even doing the inside trim at this time as well. Let's me do a perfect window trim frame and it's easier to work on the bench. Like I said, an air nailer is a must. Using the sealing tape, lots of it, I do like the Pella window seal tape. Expensive but worth it. A good power miter saw is also a must, make sure it's cutting square. Nice thing about saving all this money, my wife is happy to buy me the tools I say I need to do the job. I set up a work area outside, because cutting all the PVC (cross and ripping) is a MESS! Make sure the windows slides up and down and the panes tilt out before you trim it out. Vinyl windows will bend and wrap and cause binding if you get overly aggressive screwing it into the studs. If I was to complain it would be about the screens, I've had to put the 2nd floor screens in using a ladder outside. Sometimes the screens need a little "persuasion" to fit into the tracks. Window sealing tape and caulking are your friends, use plenty. I went with the "Pella" name because we are selling and moving south in 2 years and the "Pella' brand has a good name, rather then a no name. Lowes vs Home Depot, we are falling out with HD, even though it's 20 minutes closer. Finding the HD is not fully stocked and the Orange Aprons aren't helpful. Lowes aprons are helpful. Oh and we are noticing a difference in the winter breeze next to the windows. The rooms with the new windows are warmer and you don't get chilled sitting next to them.

    Thank you for this video - very informative. A golf ball just went through the cheap "builder" window in my sons bedroom that's why I ran into your video. Don't know much about windows but I know they cost a lot for full house replacement. Economy at this time is not helping. So, I'm gonna have to replace it myself. Don't you think Pella and Andersen comparison would have been a fair one than the American Craftsman?

    Noisy!!!! I purchased my Pella windows after watching this video. I bought five pairs of double hung Pella windows from Lowe’s, and I am very disappointed even though this video demonstrate, these windows are sturdy compared to the other brands. However these windows brings in a lot of outside noise, especially if you are closer to a road. The second issue is the locking system. The locking systems are very weak. It’s annoying that you have to properly align the window in order to be able to lock it easily. Otherwise the windows get disoriented if it is not be in the right place for locking. Also 150 series does not come with any robber/isolation padding hence it attracts a lot of road noise.

    I wish he would of gotten the American craftsman 70 series 62 by 36. We install these in new construction all the time and they are the worst product ever. Theres silicone all over the place, they're warped in multiple directions and the balance a thin string attached to a spring that shoots up when you tilt out the sash to take it out. If you dont have the little plastic stops in because they fell out or was never put in it breaks through the vinyl in the top corner. They are so hard to get to operate smoothly no matter how perfect you install the window. We get call backs all the time because the windows are so bad.

    Hello, I'm looking to replace 10 windows in my home and wanted to know which brand you suggest before receiving an estimate. With Home Depot (American Craftsman-$194 each window) and Lowes (Relia-$243 per window) ... Is the brand of the windows important, and what should I look for while buying them?

    • @Taylorraeconstruction
      @Taylorraeconstruction  Před 2 lety +1

      The way the window is made and it's components are very important for longevity. You should look for a minimum threshold in quality if you want the windows to last. It will cost you a lot more upfront but getting a quality, highly rated, local window dealer to do the job is the way to go.
