    Don't caulk the bottom. You need to have a way for the water to get out if it finds it way in. I'd also do two layers of tape on the sill and cut the corners at right angles to each other.

    Never caulk the bottom nor put the water proof tape over the bottom flange. You need water to get out that way. It is recommended by most window installers to put a small U shim under the bottom flange to allow water to escape if it ever got in.

    Gotta say. I'm looking into replacing my windows myself after this video. I thought it would be impossible for me to do it myself but I can easily follow this video and save thousands. Thanks!
    The only question I have is this. If the old window is larger than the new window, what extra steps need to be taken? Does the wood framing need to be the exact size of the window (snug fit when placed in the hole) or should there be a gap between the window and the frame?
    My only fear is that I will have too small of a hole and the window will fit now that it's cold out but will not be able to open when it gets hot out in the summer.

    • @BYOTools
      @BYOTools  Před 3 lety +3

      I love hearing that Jeremy and thanks so much for watching. That’s exactly why I do what I do and hope you subscribed.
      As for your questions, how different are we talking about? A couple inches? Feet? If it’s just a couple of inches I would add some wood furring so you can average about a 1/2” gap on either side of the window. As long as you have a 1/4” gap and it is screwed in place as I did I wouldn’t worry about movement long term. Hope that helps and thanks again for watching.

    • @jeremystyers
      @jeremystyers Před 3 lety +1

      @@BYOTools Thanks! Now I have another question. My house is a brick house. The windows are not screwed in from the outside. I've searched a lot of videos but they all say to slap the new window in the hole and foam it. That's it.
      I'm sooooooooo confused. How can they just foam it? And what about the black tapey stuff? Do brick houses not get that? What about expansion and the 1/4 inch gap? Does it not apply to brick? I'm so lost :(

    • @BYOTools
      @BYOTools  Před 4 lety +2

      With this type of window and trim you don't need it as long as you caulk properly. However, you can definitely add it to the top if you would like. I probably would have however these windows are in an odd location where there is very little chance of moisture hitting the window trim. Hope that helps Issam and thanks for watching. Hope you subscribed.

    I installed a window but I think I messed up. It was a remodeling project. So I did the framing and the I cut the siding for the rough opening (cedar) but I also cut the plywood out so when I nailed my window I did it directly to the framework. So I got a couple of question.
    1.- is that going to work? Especially against water, I put my flashing tape just like you did but I'm concerned I nailed it to the framework.
    2 does it have to be nailed against the plywood or sheeting?
    Hope I can get an answer soon. Thanks

    You don't need to use a circular saw or cut any of the siding-ever. Installed replacement windows for 13 years. Remove the panes of glass, then use a crowbow and a piece of wood to pry the frame out. A homeowner would have had a fit if I had started sawing the siding. Same method if it's brick, just be careful as not to break the brick. Simple.

    • @BYOTools

    • @matthewvoges5899
      @matthewvoges5899 Před 4 lety +1

      @@BYOToolsWhen you collapse the frames like the method X Steel is referencing, you would have to use a thru jamb installation method. The problem with that method is you are not able to flash the window. So, your only water proofing would be the caulk joint between the siding and the window. You would backer rod and apply low expansion foam around the window behind the caulk joint.

    • @bedhead1903
      @bedhead1903 Před 3 lety

      @@BYOTools you wouldn't have a flange. Either break it off, or get the proper window, which would be a replacement window. You'd drill it in from the inside. I'd be pissed if someone did this to my house.
