Welcome to the ultimate beginner’s guide to improvising guitar solos. In this video, we’ll be using the songs “Slow Dancing in a Burning Room” and “Gravity” by John Mayer to learn how to come up with amazing solos on the fly! In Section 1, we’ll kick things off by learning my 5-step system for improvising by using the major scale and chord tones. Once you’ve mastered that, we’ll move on to Section 2, expanding our coverage of the fretboard by combining the major scale with the pentatonic scale. At this point, we’ll also cover a few important soloing techniques like bending, vibrato, double-stops and slides. We’ll wrap things up with Section 3, where we’ll learn how to play guitar solos in any key by moving our shapes up and down the fretboard.

Been playing guitar for decades and ashemed to say I've avoided trying to learn lead - mainly because ive been intimidated by the fretboard and music theory - even though i have a lot of chords in my arsenal. Ive watched a lot of lead guitar tutorials but i find the tutor assumes I'm at a higher level than i actually am. This tutorial is probably the only one I've found that truly goes back to first principles. They say that "Teaching is more than telling and learning is more than listening." So thanks for this resource, Amdrew. You've made the process accessable, understandable, doable and enjoyable. And people always invest time in what they enjoy. thanks for this lesson, so appreciated !! from my part I learn all the intervals from the scale and I know if I play third major, fperfect fourth and so on it works better for my composition! But i imagine it is different for each person :)

hey man, great job answering bunches of my questions but one, in particular, can you clarify why you are using the D shape A chord in the key of E major instead of the E major is it because of the positioning of the excise you are doing? Just really curious trying to follow as close as I can to understand so far so good up to that point that's where you lost me and Thanks

No problem! Yes. Both notes would always need to come from the same key/scale.

Good to know a little theory here since the diagram is pentatonic but the video is diatonic and it is not clear in the diagram which are the low and high ends.
Is keeping track of the chord changes 100% of the time a must? I’m guessing it is and at any any moment in the song or track you should be able to say the chord that is playing.
I’ll be using use your steps to improve.. Thanks so much..
Not necessarily. If you can do it, it'll help. But even I lose track from time to time. As long as what you're playing is diatonic (exists naturally) inside the key, then any note from that scale will fit over any diatonic chord.
Best case scenario, you track every chord, but don't let it stop you from just forgetting it and trying out different things with the scale. It'll still come out sounding great! :)

It’s my favorite video man! The roadmap helped me a lot man but after find out the key for the song I’m still struggling with the chord progression. Maybe practicing is the only answer🫤
@@Hudson.. It really does come with practice! It's best to start with simple songs. Indie, pop, singer-songwriter genres. Those ones always tend to use basic, recognizable progressions. From there, you can move into more challenging music.

What ear monitors are you using
These are from Ultimate Ears. I got them in 2017 I think.
As a beginner which scale to learn first on the guitar ?
I'd suggest learning the small major scale shape I show in Section 1 of this lesson. From there, the minor pentatonic is best. If you just follow this video as a guide, you'll be on the right track :)
Didn’t quote understand. Are you supposed to hit the chord notes while improvising, or can you just play freely?
You can play freely OR hit chord tones. It's totally up to you and your creative choice. I think a mix is usually best.

You can apply all the concepts from this video to your own songs. As long as you know the key of the song you're playing, you can use the notes from the scales I show here to come up with your own solos.

These lessons are much appreciated. One suggestion for improvement: there's a lot of "talk" and not a lot of "music" in these videos. I find it especially troubling to the brain, due to the compression of the audio that's been done on these videos - it feels like a ton of speech coming at you and it does sound quite unnatural to the brain.
