Saw George the Animal Steele in 1981 at the Roselle Catholic HS gym in NJ. I was twelve years old at the time. A bunch of us kids were making fun of the animal when he all of a sudden chewed through a turnbuckle and started throwing the stuffing at us. We all acted tough until the Animal charged at us outside the ring. I swear I pissed my pants. Those were great memories. For $8 I got to see George Steele, Ivan Putski, Tony Garea and Rick Martel, King Kong Mosca, Tony Atlas, Pat Patterson, Sgt. Slaughter and two very young newcomers in Curt Hennig and Eddie Gilbert.

I was at this show and met the Animal. He autographed a picture of Randy Savage coming down on George with a double axe handle from the top rope. George was trying to scare Miss Elizabeth unaware of the savage blow (pun intended) he was about to receive. The photo was taken from behind Miss Elizabeth's perspective. The guy he told to shut up is Malcom. He's actually really cool and he's a huge wrestling fan. We call him Malcomania.

He was one of Bruno's toughest adversaries and also challenged Pedro Morales when he became Champion and Bob Backland throughout the 70's By the mid eighties Steel was pretty much done it was around then he became a fan favorite for the first time in his career chewing turnbuckles, throwing its filling at refs (and his opponents) his last major feud was with Randy (Macho Man) Savage fighting over the affections of Elizabeth mostly. Steel in his prime was a ferocious, mean, killer had classic BLOODY 🩸🩸🩸☠ confrontations with the Original Sheik.

George was a school teacher when he wasn't wrestling, which is widely known.
However, he also tended to be anti-teachers' union in his home state of Michigan. He was this way supposedly because he cared about advancing the interests of students, but I think he was always out for himself.
As I have a background in K-12 and postsecondary education as well, Steele's anti-unionism is something I fault Steele for. Like police, teachers often have difficult jobs and need unionization to protect their interests, especially when they are always expected to do more with less. That said, teachers' unions in some states can hold up the education process and harm students when labor strikes go on for too long. So, there is a balance between unionism and obstructionism.
Still, because of Steele's anti-union stance, I see him much like Jesse Ventura sees Hulk Hogan when Hogan resisted unionization of WWF wrestlers in order to advance Hogan's own interests as WWF's top face.
I feel like Steele was something of a traitor to his own profession and a hypocrite, especially when he started wrestling to make additional money--money that teacher unionization would have given him.
Bret Hart likewise has some unflattering stories about Steele.

Alright, let's dive right in. You're a wrestler, a modern-day gladiator, used to dealing with all sorts of chaos in the ring. But this one fan, they've really got under your skin, haven't they? We're not talking about the typical cheering or booing here. This is next-level annoyance, the kind that makes you want to jump out of the ring and... well, let's not go there. It's like they've got a PhD in getting on your nerves, right?
So, here's the thing. This fan, they're just a speck in a sea of thousands. Yet, somehow, they've become the center of your universe - for all the wrong reasons. They're like that one popcorn kernel stuck in your teeth, impossible to ignore. But let's face it, you're in the spotlight, and that means dealing with fans of all kinds - the good, the bad, and the annoying-as-shit. Remember, every roar, every cheer, and yes, even the annoying chants, they're all part of the gig. It's about taking that energy, even the irritating kind, and using it to fuel your performance. After all, isn't that what being a wrestling superstar is all about?
