I graduated in 86. Can you imagine at 17-18 years old hearing this for the first time. A complete mindfuck compared to what was out there at the time. The time changes, blistering solos, the deep lyrics, everything came together. Now imagine Ozzy having to go out and follow this every night on tour. It was a great time to be a young Man.

Kyuss, janes addiction, nirvana, soundgarden, tool before they were big etc etc. it was amazing Kids today missed out on real live music. Not controlled cooperate posing as real music it was out of hand at those concerts. People let loose. No phones at all. Just get into it
My best friend and I bought Metallica "Master of Puppets" and Metal Church "Metal Church" LPs at a K-Mart going out of business sell in Macon Ga., in early '87. We paid 1.99 each and we have never been the same since. I look back now and mid 80s music scene was awesome. We had metal stuff like this on our road trip tapes. Right in the mix with Pet Shop Boys, VH, Schoolly D, P. Collins -- our music taste was anything and everything but Metallica blew us away.

Funny you mention putting this song in a time capsule. The whole Master Of Puppets album is preserved in the Library of Congress due to its cultural significance. This is a beyond iconic album. The lyricism, production, vocals and instrumentation is just off the chain. Not a single bad song on this entire project and every song leads into the other perfectly. A truly perfect album.
Exactly. I remember my best friend running out of the local music shop with security chasing him. Hey, hey man buy this for me. I luckily knew the shop owner, told security it was okay, he was just excited, not stealing, he wanted me to buy it for him. I bought two copies. I wore out three vinyls after hearing this album over time. My father many years later, loathed this because I played it over and over, playing this in the studio (he owned a record studio), came in waited for me to finish the last few songs of the album, then said, "that was always a hell of an album huh. He's a country and western muso ;)
The fact that they wrote about things so poignant when they were essentially kids always boggles my mind. There is no doubt. This is their masterpiece.
You can dig back, but back when it was written, it was either known or supposed the whole album was about Jame's brother who participated in Vietnam...
I was at a house party, a buddy came up to me, put headphones on me “listen to this whole album” and I did, sat in a corner staring at the cassette liner notes and lyrics and photos and cover art. and I couldn’t even grasp how amazing it was completely mind blown. No one at the time was even close to what this album had achieved.

The only difference I could think of, is that Master of Puppets was great musically, but it also reached a wider audience, selling more albums than they had at that time. Those new fans immediately went out looking for all of their previously releases. Love them both for different reasons!

Both Ride and Master are landmark albums… then came Justice like Holy shit 🤩 musically the textures and dynamics.. it was beyond what their fellow thrashers were putting out. Sometimes when you've been hearing these incredible songs repeatedly for 35+ years, you tend to forget just how incredible they really are. Your ear just sort of starts taking that greatness for granted... Seeing you guys relive the experience I had back in 1980-something is an incredible reminder of just how powerful this music is and was. Thanks for keeping it alive, and passing it along to another generation.
I say this EXACT thing to myself everytime I watch these guys review one of my favorite tunes, and it makes me so friggin happy to see the looks on their faces of equal parts joy and WTF when their minds are totally blown, just like mine once was!!!
I just sit back and wait in every song they do on this album, and I know what parts are going to screw them all up. I just wait for it and there it is! That’s how I felt the first time at 10. It blew my mind. Hadn’t ever heard such talent. It’s amazing to watch someone else lose it over the exact thing I did decades ago.
Heres the thing about metalheads bashing or devaluing Metallica: For most -- I'm gonna say the vast majority of us under the age of 50, Metallica was our introduction to metal. We spent middle school and high school playing the absolute hell out of those early Metallica albums, THEN we went on to fall in love with all these other bands. So we get a little jaded. We call Metallica "entry-level" because they were our entry back in 8th grade. We hype up the smaller bands that we moved onto AFTER we completely saturated our brains with Metallica. But we tend to forget that our 15-year-old selves listened to thousands of hours of Metallica in the first place for a reason.

Also just the cross between being both extremely popular and well known to the most casual of the casual, but also having an insanely good early catalogue that is actually top tier, can result in them being on either side of the most edgy of metalhead arguments hah. They have some of the greatest music in thrash, and later, some of the most embarrassing hah.
@@bobby_c07 Yeah, there's that too. They're like the metal Beatles. The Beatles were such a big deal that even saying "The Beatles were overrated" has itself become a cliché. Same with Metallica -- they're such a big deal for metal, even the backlash is played out.
In my opinion, the bashing Lars receives is mostly from goofy kids who don't know anything about creating music in any capacity. That or they're musicians who are too "by the book" and don't let creativity flow freely. Whatever the case, I'm really tired of their superiority complex they've created for themselves. I'm not saying Metallica is perfect and flawless, but they've done a good job for themselves and have inspired so many people to play a musical instrument.
Disposable Heroes is probably the most underrated song from them, it's 8 and a half minutes of pure adrenaline and aggression, how can you not love this song? Alright, maybe not the most underrated, but definitely underrated.

I am an Army veteran and I've been listening to Metallica for 40 yrs. +. Disposable Heroes is absolutely my mantra. Like you said, a metal masterpiece.
Kirk's ability to compose solos that compliment and interact with the riff changes and rhythm transitions happening underneath the solo is unmatched. Whether he's playing a slower melody or completely shredding the neck of his guitar it always feels like an organic part of the whole song.
As a metal guitarist I can tell you that this song genuinely blows my mind. Over 8 minutes of almost constant chugging and trem picking. And they are crisp and clean throughout the whole thing. It's mind blowing how far ahead they were of every other thrash metal band back then. Now it's 2023 and they're still selling out stadiums. They're the kings of metal music
James at this point was an absolute machine. Stuff like this and (especially) Damage Inc, and then later Dyer's Eve and The Frayed Ends of Sanity... Incredible right hand work. Would give anything to have seen them live in the late 80's or early 90's
And you know what, if this was made today by some other band, the band would have just recorded each riff once and then copied and pasted throughout the whole song using the digital production tools of today. But these guys played every note.
@@leerobbo92 caught them when i was like 12 or 13 in 95/96 right before load dropped. End of their prime, but still their prime, they were so damn good live. I was a metallica nerd back then, literally knew every note of every song by heart, and they barely missed anything live... I was blown away
I saw them in June 88 on the Monsters of Rock tour at RFK stadium in Washngton D.C. with my dad and uncle. I was 16yrs old. The order of bands that day were Kingdom Come (led zeppelin clone), Metallica, Dokken, Scorpions, and Van Halen was the headliner. Metallica absolutely destroyed everyone on that stage (VH included) and the only song we got from the Justice album that day was Harvester of Sorrow because the album wasn't released until 2 months later in August 88. As a matter of fact, Harvester was first played live on May 23rd 88, and our show was the 7th time it was ever played live. They only played 11 songs but it was prime Metallica in top form and I wouldn't trade that memory for anything in the world.
I was 15 when this dropped, locked up in MacLaren juvenile prison in OR. Someone smuggled the cassette tape into our unit, and there were literal fights over who got to listen to it, on a tape recorder and headphones stolen from the library, late at night after the lights went out, huddled in a dark corner, we would gather in small groups, with others watching out for staff so we didn't get busted, just to get our fix of this masterpiece. Saying it was profound would be an understatement.
A lot of metalheads fall into the hipster trap of thinking the more obscure the band is, the better they are. Metallica got to be a big as they are because they are just that good.
There are a lot of amazing obscure thrash bands that will never get love on reaction channels. But Metallica were definitely top tier from Kill Em All to Master of Puppets. And Justice has a few really great tracks too, but also noticeably the beginning of the end.
I am the same age as those guys, and played in the bay area during this exact period. Looking back it's really hard to believe how four 20 year olds came up with this, during a time when most people couldn't comprehend it. Now it's mainstream. Metallica is more important than a lot of us can even understand. Love them or hate them, this stuff is insanely tight. That turnaround before the chorus still chills me.
This album is in the Library of Congress for a reason, for cultural impact. I was 13-14 when I first heard this when it just came out and it blew my mind and set me on 'the path'. I was hypnotized by everything, how different it was from other 'heavy' bands, the creativeness, James unique and perfect 'metal voice' and not a bad song on the album. I've said this since my teens, MoP is the metal Bible. It IS the bar that they raised and every heavy band followed and made them up their game.

True. When they first appeared, it was like a culture shock. Incomparable energy - nobody at that time was any close. And their sound matured. MOP was the climax. After that stuff got more complicated - they started thinking.
I love your take on Lars. I hate that people try to diminish him because he isn’t the same caliber drummer as Dave Lombardo, Nick Menza or Danny Carey. He knows music, how to structure a song, and how to fit in the song with his abilities. If he’s good enough for James, he’s good enough for me. The same applies to Kirk. This band has been near perfect their whole career…. I missed the Cliff era, the Jason era was my jam, love Rob. Forget the haters, enjoy the music.
Lars' talent isn't in technical drumming. It's in off timing fills and tasty placement of his drumming. It doesn't need to be technical to be awesome. No one else could fill his shoes. There is only one Lars and Metallica doesn't work without him
He made Metallica and can’t replace him with someone else and have it successful. He’s not disposable in any way. He has a way of doing simple things, but it’s still fantastic!
Lars was perfect for those first 5 records. It doesn’t matter that he’s not as good as Lombardo or whoever. His drumming so enhanced the music on those records.
The 5.98 EP shouldnt be overlooked either. Even though it was a cover album, songs like The Wait and Helpless particularly , his drum work was top tier.
I'd say the first four. On the black album with that type of simpler, slower songs, he was more exposed in the mix and not always enhancing the guitar riffs

Lars was all over this album, all four guys were godlike on every track. Another masterpiece when nobody thought they can top or equal Ride the Lightning.

It’s been said that the biggest problem with Disposable Heroes is that it was on THAT album. Genius lost among genius. Honestly, I didn’t really “notice” this song until my brain was done digesting songs 1, 2, 4, 7 & 8. Then I was like…”Holy crap!” Literally the greatest album….it just IS!
That is generally the funny thing about this album. Usually albums have 1-3 bad songs depending on how many songs the album has. So naturally you go: Oh Leper Messiah and Disposable Heroes are not getting much attention, they must be the bad songs of the album, then you listen to it and you realize: This album does not have a single bad song. The greatest metal album of all time cause it only contains 10/10 songs.

This album was added to the Library of Congress in 2015. The impact of this album for the band, the music, the fans, and newcomers continues to grow even today. Favorite album of all time for me!
Ride the lightning and Master of puppets are absolutely fantastic albums. 100% agree about Disposable Heroes and The Thing That Should Not Be. Damage inc is an absolute banger as well!

I bought this at age 14 (in 1987) and it changed me forever. I was listening to the typical 80s hair metal stuff and when I got this I never went back. This was something else, and I don't think it will ever be repeated. Metallica's Master of Puppets won metal. I also think that James voice doesn't get enough credit. It's not flashy or glitzy but it's perfect for this music. It fits so well that it's hardly noticed and I think that's the best compliment that you can give it. He was at his peak here imo.
As a combat medic allow me to fill you in on what I seem to pick up that no one else does. Relisten to the song with eyes closed so you visualize the war setting. That's when you realize the into sounds like mortars and rockets. The main super fast riff during soldier boy made of clay, the guitars sound like high velocity machine guns. The middle just before the solo is marked with a bang before a staggering slower tempo; like James just got shot, which is why he starts asking why am I dying?
People forget how good Lars actually were. His progressive playing style in those 80's albums is amazing. Another thrash band you guys have to check out is Testament.

It’s cool how Lars mimicks the lyrics in verse 2: “Barking of machine gun fire does nothing to me now” He does 2 crazy snare/tom/bass drum fills that sound like machine gun fire. Then “Sounding of the clock that ticks get used to it somehow” he does 4 cymbal chokes to mimic the sound of a clock ticking. Super cool! One of my favorite tracks on that album. Glad you guys love it too!
As a drummer myself, I know exactly what George is referring to when it comes to those little nuances that Lars puts into is compositions. I was a teenager in high school when Master of Puppets came out and Metallica was a huge influence on me as a musician and drummer. Lars gets a lot of undeserved flack for his playing which I don't understand. He played on one of, if not the greatest metal albums of all time (Master of Puppets) This album takes me back to a time when life was simpler. Nostalgia is a powerful drug.

What you said about Metallica being truly great as the reason for Thrash gaining popularity is 100% accurate. Metallica wasn't played on the radio or MTV until the late 80's, their music had to be discovered. I was in my rebellious teenaged years in 1986. I was listening to Ozzie and Black Sabbath behind my parent's back, when I saw a kid wearing a Metallica T-shirt and asked him about them. He said he was an Ozzie fan too, and had gotten to see Metallica open for him. He told me they were like nothing he'd ever heard before, and I had to go buy Master of Puppets and hear them for myself to understand. So I did, and when I pressed Play and heard Battery for the first time, I knew I had finally found the music I was looking for. I couldn't be bothered listening to anything else. I just went out and bought everything from Metallica I could get my hands on. Good times.
I'll never forget the first time I heard this song. . Christmas cassette that I played in my mother's car that night. . You guys made it feel like the first time listening to it in 1992 at 11 years old. . 💯❤🎶⌚
Man I gotta tell you guys, I'm an old metalhead who has been deeply involved in the scene for 20+ years at this point. Metallica was hugely instrumental in getting me into metal, but I kinda put them on the back burner many years ago as I moved into heavier, more technical stuff. They always had a place in my heart, but watching you guys react to them over the years really rekindled my love. I got into this channel watching the guys' reactions to "One," and it was the same thing. Watching someone have a blast with something you deeply love, it's like you get to experience it again for the first time.
At Download this year so many people were complaining about Metallica headlining on 2 of the 4 nights, but then saw them play - still, at like 60 years old - and were just blown away. They're kings, and this is definitely one of their best. It's also definitely Kirk's best solo.
I wish there was a way for me to hear this song for the first time again. It was so long ago that I almost forgot how great it was. Thanks for reminding me.

I was into NWOBM before Thrash came along and lived all these albums coming out. A big element to their success was Flemming Rasmussen, the producer and sound engineer. First with Ride the Lightening and then Master of Puppets. The sound and atmosphere of both those albums he created was unique at the time and was the perfect partner to their riffs and song writing.
Great song writing + Great Musical Skill = Great Music! And the Vocal range is Perfectly matched with guitar tone and power chord structure. And THAT is why Metallica are and will be forever Metal Legends!
Metallica is one of those rare bands that not only mastered the genre they started in, but brought music in a whole new direction and set the impossibly high benchmark for everyone else. Metallica and esp this album is a cornerstone.
Master of Puppets is lyrically, technically, and thematically the best Metallica album of all time. "Disposable Heroes" is my second favorite song off the album and easily in my top 5 Metallica songs, probably even top 3. So many moments that give me chills every time, and the anger and aggression in James's singing is unparalleled.
Been listening to this song for 37 years and I still get the same reaction at the pre bridge breakdown. Hairs stand straight up on my arms. It's not only the best song on the best Metallica album, it's arguably the best metal song ever! Metallica at their absolute peak!
By far their best song. It has all elements of what Metallica is all about, raw energy, speed, heaviness, powerfull vocals, all instruments played so well. A true masterpiece 🤘✌

@@David-li4uw Not necessarily HARD to play (in parts). The riffs themselves are fairly straightforward. What makes this song HARD to play though, is the stamina required to get through it. It's absolutely relentless on the forearm. It's precision rhythmic picking that is so demanding. You need to be warmed up BIG TIME to get through this one.
It never makes it on the list of their most popular songs, but this song for me is the best thrash song ever written. The fury, the pace, the lyrics, the dynamism. Everything I want in a thrash song is right here. I got to hear it once live and it was everything I hoped it would be, I hope you guys get to have that experience one day too.

And I think it's why many other bands don't even bother trying to duplicate this sound. They rather put their own spin on a song because putting out material and comparing it to this would just fail almost every other time.
After all these years, ducking in and out of rock, metal and pop music history, the fellas are still so moved by vintage Metallica. It's a wrap. One of the best bands to ever have formed.
Lars is such an underrated drummer. He brings a style and musicality to his playing that not many other drummers can match. He’s elite. Dig it or don’t
I agree, the Metallica we knew would not have been the same without Lars on the kit. Around 89-91 they were tight as hell and that was in part Lars too. Did he eventually get lazy and inconsistent? Yeah, but he was still the top of his game for a pretty long time in the scheme of things.
@@grilledspaghetti he also helped define what thrash metal drumming is. When he was coming up, no one played like that. He and a handful of others created this style.
He technically isn't a great drummer at all, and tends to just re-hash the same rhythmic territory post AJFA, but I'll say this. He actually **plays** live, warts and all, and his band **plays** right along with him, warts and all. Refreshing to see in an age where we make excuses for "live" performances being held together by clicks and backing tracks, and then passed off as authentic to the non-discerning.
37 years ago... when did we stop producing musical talent like this. I was 6 when this came out, and I can't think of a Metal band that tops them. They've had ups and downs, but they are the standard to aim for.

I was 15 when this came out, and still to this day it's the best album that the music industry has ever produced for me. It's more complete than an encyclopedia from a to z. No other band has made an album as unique and as complete as Metallica have done with Master of Puppets. It's impossible to duplicate.
Metallica were on tour with Ozzy in 86...but Ozzy was banned from S.A TEXAS for peeing on the Alamo...lol.but Metallica refused to skip us..and treated us to an ass kicking with the opening act the "Godz"...great job guys..much love from TEXAS
I saw that Ozzy Ultimate Sin 86 tour with Metallica opening with Master Of Puppets at the Frank Erwin Center in Austin, Texas. That was the last Metallica album with Cliff Burton. RIP.

The verse lyrics are from the soldiers perspective. The chorus are from the generals perspective (or whomever you want to place in the leadership role). The entire album talks about control. Here you clearly see who is pulling the strings.
People have tried to replace Lars’ drum tracks with their own more technical stuff… and it just doesn’t work. Yes there is familiarity bias at play but you can still tell that Lars’ choices just fit the songs right.
The fact that James could play this AND sing, is superhuman.
and he only learned how to down pick, which is crazy for songs like this.

We paid 1.99 each and we have never been the same since. I look back now and mid 80s music scene was awesome. We had metal stuff like this on our road trip tapes. Right in the mix with Pet Shop Boys, VH, Schoolly D, P. Collins -- our music taste was anything and everything but Metallica blew us away.

Funny you mention putting this song in a time capsule. The whole Master Of Puppets album is preserved in the Library of Congress due to its cultural significance. This is a beyond iconic album. The lyricism, production, vocals and instrumentation is just off the chain. Not a single bad song on this entire project and every song leads into the other perfectly. A truly perfect album.

My father many years later, loathed this because I played it over and over, playing this in the studio (he owned a record studio), came in waited for me to finish the last few songs of the album, then said, "that was always a hell of an album huh. He's a country and western muso ;)

I was at a house party, a buddy came up to me, put headphones on me “listen to this whole album” and I did, sat in a corner staring at the cassette liner notes and lyrics and photos and cover art. and I couldn’t even grasp how amazing it was completely mind blown. No one at the time was even close to what this album had achieved.
I still think Ride the Lightning is better. Better than a masterpiece is apparently possible.

The only difference I could think of, is that Master of Puppets was great musically, but it also reached a wider audience, selling more albums than they had at that time. Those new fans immediately went out looking for all of their previously releases. Love them both for different reasons!

Your ear just sort of starts taking that greatness for granted... Seeing you guys relive the experience I had back in 1980-something is an incredible reminder of just how powerful this music is and was. Thanks for keeping it alive, and passing it along to another generation.

I just sit back and wait in every song they do on this album, and I know what parts are going to screw them all up. I just wait for it and there it is! That’s how I felt the first time at 10. For most -- I'm gonna say the vast majority of us under the age of 50, Metallica was our introduction to metal. We spent middle school and high school playing the absolute hell out of those early Metallica albums, THEN we went on to fall in love with all these other bands.
So we get a little jaded. We call Metallica "entry-level" because they were our entry back in 8th grade. We hype up the smaller bands that we moved onto AFTER we completely saturated our brains with Metallica. But we tend to forget that our 15-year-old selves listened to thousands of hours of Metallica in the first place for a reason.
Indeed. Also just the cross between being both extremely popular and well known to the most casual of the casual, but also having an insanely good early catalogue that is actually top tier, can result in them being on either side of the most edgy of metalhead arguments hah. They have some of the greatest music in thrash, and later, some of the most embarrassing hah.

In my opinion, the bashing Lars receives is mostly from goofy kids who don't know anything about creating music in any capacity. That or they're musicians who are too "by the book" and don't let creativity flow freely. Whatever the case, I'm really tired of their superiority complex they've created for themselves. I'm not saying Metallica is perfect and flawless, but they've done a good job for themselves and have inspired so many people to play a musical instrument.
Disposable Heroes is probably the most underrated song from them, it's 8 and a half minutes of pure adrenaline and aggression, how can you not love this song?

I am an Army veteran and I've been listening to Metallica for 40 yrs. +. Disposable Heroes is absolutely my mantra. Like you said, a metal masterpiece.
This is one of Kirk's best solos. The whole song is brilliant.
Kirk's ability to compose solos that compliment and interact with the riff changes and rhythm transitions happening underneath the solo is unmatched. Whether he's playing a slower melody or completely shredding the neck of his guitar it always feels like an organic part of the whole song.

As a metal guitarist I can tell you that this song genuinely blows my mind. Over 8 minutes of almost constant chugging and trem picking. And they are crisp and clean throughout the whole thing. It's mind blowing how far ahead they were of every other thrash metal band back then. Now it's 2023 and they're still selling out stadiums. They're the kings of metal music
James at this point was an absolute machine. Stuff like this and (especially) Damage Inc, and then later Dyer's Eve and The Frayed Ends of Sanity... Incredible right hand work. Would give anything to have seen them live in the late 80's or early 90's
And you know what, if this was made today by some other band, the band would have just recorded each riff once and then copied and pasted throughout the whole song using the digital production tools of today. But these guys played every note.

@@leerobbo92 caught them when i was like 12 or 13 in 95/96 right before load dropped. End of their prime, but still their prime, they were so damn good live. I was a metallica nerd back then, literally knew every note of every song by heart, and they barely missed anything live... I was blown away
I saw them in June 88 on the Monsters of Rock tour at RFK stadium in Washngton D.C. with my dad and uncle. I was 16yrs old. The order of bands that day were Kingdom Come (led zeppelin clone), Metallica, Dokken, Scorpions, and Van Halen was the headliner. Metallica absolutely destroyed everyone on that stage (VH included) and the only song we got from the Justice album that day was Harvester of Sorrow because the album wasn't released until 2 months later in August 88. As a matter of fact, Harvester was first played live on May 23rd 88, and our show was the 7th time it was ever played live. They only played 11 songs but it was prime Metallica in top form and I wouldn't trade that memory for anything in the world.
I was 15 when this dropped, locked up in MacLaren juvenile prison in OR. Someone smuggled the cassette tape into our unit, and there were literal fights over who got to listen to it, on a tape recorder and headphones stolen from the library, late at night after the lights went out, huddled in a dark corner, we would gather in small groups, with others watching out for staff so we didn't get busted, just to get our fix of this masterpiece. Saying it was profound would be an understatement.
That gut wrenching scream on "I was born for dying" is what made me fall for this song back in the day.
A lot of metalheads fall into the hipster trap of thinking the more obscure the band is, the better they are. Metallica got to be a big as they are because they are just that good.

There are a lot of amazing obscure thrash bands that will never get love on reaction channels. But Metallica were definitely top tier from Kill Em All to Master of Puppets. And Justice has a few really great tracks too, but also noticeably the beginning of the end.

I am the same age as those guys, and played in the bay area during this exact period. Looking back it's really hard to believe how four 20 year olds came up with this, during a time when most people couldn't comprehend it. Now it's mainstream. Metallica is more important than a lot of us can even understand. Love them or hate them, this stuff is insanely tight. That turnaround before the chorus still chills me.
They need to learn who Exodus is. Now THAT is a band who has gotten better with age, like a fine wine.

This album is in the Library of Congress for a reason, for cultural impact. I was 13-14 when I first heard this when it just came out and it blew my mind and set me on 'the path'. I was hypnotized by everything, how different it was from other 'heavy' bands, the creativeness, James unique and perfect 'metal voice' and not a bad song on the album. I've said this since my teens, MoP is the metal Bible. It IS the bar that they raised and every heavy band followed and made them up their game.

True. When they first appeared, it was like a culture shock. Incomparable energy - nobody at that time was any close. And their sound matured. MOP was the climax. After that stuff got more complicated - they started thinking.
I love your take on Lars. I hate that people try to diminish him because he isn’t the same caliber drummer as Dave Lombardo, Nick Menza or Danny Carey. He knows music, how to structure a song, and how to fit in the song with his abilities. If he’s good enough for James, he’s good enough for me. The same applies to Kirk. This band has been near perfect their whole career…. I missed the Cliff era, the Jason era was my jam, love Rob. Forget the haters, enjoy the music.

Lars' talent isn't in technical drumming. It's in off timing fills and tasty placement of his drumming. It doesn't need to be technical to be awesome. No one else could fill his shoes. There is only one Lars and Metallica doesn't work without him
He made Metallica and can’t replace him with someone else and have it successful. He’s not disposable in any way. He has a way of doing simple things, but it’s still fantastic!

Lars was perfect for those first 5 records. It doesn’t matter that he’s not as good as Lombardo or whoever. His drumming so enhanced the music on those records.
The 5.98 EP shouldnt be overlooked either. Even though it was a cover album, songs like The Wait and Helpless particularly , his drum work was top tier.

I'd say the first four. On the black album with that type of simpler, slower songs, he was more exposed in the mix and not always enhancing the guitar riffs

That is generally the funny thing about this album. Usually albums have 1-3 bad songs depending on how many songs the album has. So naturally you go: Oh Leper Messiah and Disposable Heroes are not getting much attention, they must be the bad songs of the album, then you listen to it and you realize: This album does not have a single bad song. The greatest metal album of all time cause it only contains 10/10 songs.
'Master of Puppets' as an album defined an era. It won't be replicated for a long time.

I looove the whole sound. Peaks 80s metal sound. Drums and everything else are so oldschool yet hefty.
I bought this at age 14 (in 1987) and it changed me forever. I was listening to the typical 80s hair metal stuff and when I got this I never went back. This was something else, and I don't think it will ever be repeated. Metallica's Master of Puppets won metal. I also think that James voice doesn't get enough credit. It's not flashy or glitzy but it's perfect for this music. It fits so well that it's hardly noticed and I think that's the best compliment that you can give it. He was at his peak here imo.
As a combat medic allow me to fill you in on what I seem to pick up that no one else does. Relisten to the song with eyes closed so you visualize the war setting. That's when you realize the into sounds like mortars and rockets. The main super fast riff during soldier boy made of clay, the guitars sound like high velocity machine guns. The middle just before the solo is marked with a bang before a staggering slower tempo; like James just got shot, which is why he starts asking why am I dying?
People forget how good Lars actually were. His progressive playing style in those 80's albums is amazing.
Another thrash band you guys have to check out is Testament.
Especially in and justice for all the most progressive album of metallica

As a drummer myself, I know exactly what George is referring to when it comes to those little nuances that Lars puts into is compositions. I was a teenager in high school when Master of Puppets came out and Metallica was a huge influence on me as a musician and drummer. Lars gets a lot of undeserved flack for his playing which I don't understand. He played on one of, if not the greatest metal albums of all time (Master of Puppets) This album takes me back to a time when life was simpler. Nostalgia is a powerful drug.

One of Metallica's great epics. I'm not a Metallica fanboy, but the Master of Puppets album is undeniably a heavy metal masterpiece.
What you said about Metallica being truly great as the reason for Thrash gaining popularity is 100% accurate. Metallica wasn't played on the radio or MTV until the late 80's, their music had to be discovered. I was in my rebellious teenaged years in 1986. I was listening to Ozzie and Black Sabbath behind my parent's back, when I saw a kid wearing a Metallica T-shirt and asked him about them. He said he was an Ozzie fan too, and had gotten to see Metallica open for him. He told me they were like nothing he'd ever heard before, and I had to go buy Master of Puppets and hear them for myself to understand. So I did, and when I pressed Play and heard Battery for the first time, I knew I had finally found the music I was looking for. I couldn't be bothered listening to anything else. I just went out and bought everything from Metallica I could get my hands on. Good times.
I'll never forget the first time I heard this song. . Christmas cassette that I played in my mother's car that night. . You guys made it feel like the first time listening to it in 1992 at 11 years old. . 💯❤🎶⌚
Man I gotta tell you guys, I'm an old metalhead who has been deeply involved in the scene for 20+ years at this point. Metallica was hugely instrumental in getting me into metal, but I kinda put them on the back burner many years ago as I moved into heavier, more technical stuff. They always had a place in my heart, but watching you guys react to them over the years really rekindled my love. At Download this year so many people were complaining about Metallica headlining on 2 of the 4 nights, but then saw them play - still, at like 60 years old - and were just blown away. They're kings, and this is definitely one of their best. It's also definitely Kirk's best solo.

I was into NWOBM before Thrash came along and lived all these albums coming out. A big element to their success was Flemming Rasmussen, the producer and sound engineer. First with Ride the Lightening and then Master of Puppets. The sound and atmosphere of both those albums he created was unique at the time and was the perfect partner to their riffs and song writing.

Metallica is one of those rare bands that not only mastered the genre they started in, but brought music in a whole new direction and set the impossibly high benchmark for everyone else. Metallica and esp this album is a cornerstone.
Master of Puppets is lyrically, technically, and thematically the best Metallica album of all time. "Disposable Heroes" is my second favorite song off the album and easily in my top 5 Metallica songs, probably even top 3. So many moments that give me chills every time, and the anger and aggression in James's singing is unparalleled.

They have played it live fairly often bit you’re right. It’s definitely not a regular. Probably because that shit is HARD TO PLAY. No way Lars wants to play that every night.
@@David-li4uw Not necessarily HARD to play (in parts). The riffs themselves are fairly straightforward. What makes this song HARD to play though, is the stamina required to get through it. It's absolutely relentless on the forearm. It's precision rhythmic picking that is so demanding. You need to be warmed up BIG TIME to get through this one.
I saw it live in San Diego Browns field 1994. They sounded so amazing back then!

I’ve been listening to this album for almost 40 years. It still holds up. I even saw them touring for this album, and Cliff was a monster.
It never makes it on the list of their most popular songs, but this song for me is the best thrash song ever written. The fury, the pace, the lyrics, the dynamism. Everything I want in a thrash song is right here. I got to hear it once live and it was everything I hoped it would be, I hope you guys get to have that experience one day too.

And I think it's why many other bands don't even bother trying to duplicate this sound. They rather put their own spin on a song because putting out material and comparing it to this would just fail almost every other time.

After all these years, ducking in and out of rock, metal and pop music history, the fellas are still so moved by vintage Metallica. It's a wrap. One of the best bands to ever have formed.

I agree, the Metallica we knew would not have been the same without Lars on the kit. Around 89-91 they were tight as hell and that was in part Lars too. Did he eventually get lazy and inconsistent? Yeah, but he was still the top of his game for a pretty long time in the scheme of things.
@@grilledspaghetti he also helped define what thrash metal drumming is. When he was coming up, no one played like that. He and a handful of others created this style.

He technically isn't a great drummer at all, and tends to just re-hash the same rhythmic territory post AJFA, but I'll say this. He actually **plays** live, warts and all, and his band **plays** right along with him, warts and all. Refreshing to see in an age where we make excuses for "live" performances being held together by clicks and backing tracks, and then passed off as authentic to the non-discerning.
MASTER OF PUPPETS was THE GAME CHANGER of that era (and yes, their masterpiece, indeed). Truly groundbreaking.
37 years ago... when did we stop producing musical talent like this. I was 6 when this came out, and I can't think of a Metal band that tops them. They've had ups and downs, but they are the standard to aim for.

I was 15 when this came out, and still to this day it's the best album that the music industry has ever produced for me. It's more complete than an encyclopedia from a to z. No other band has made an album as unique and as complete as Metallica have done with Master of Puppets. It's impossible to duplicate.

Metallica were on tour with Ozzy in 86...but Ozzy was banned from S.A TEXAS for peeing on the Alamo...lol.but Metallica refused to skip us..and treated us to an ass kicking with the opening act the "Godz"...great job guys..much love from TEXAS
I saw that Ozzy Ultimate Sin 86 tour with Metallica opening with Master Of Puppets at the Frank Erwin Center in Austin, Texas.
That was the last Metallica album with Cliff Burton. RIP.

my favorite metallica song for a reason. the lyrics are real as hell, i could go on and on about the young, disposable soldiers & the history… the instruments are incredible. such an amazing song, easily their best
The verse lyrics are from the soldiers perspective. The chorus are from the generals perspective (or whomever you want to place in the leadership role). The entire album talks about control. Here you clearly see who is pulling the strings.

As a person, Lars is an acquired taste. But Lars is the Ringo Star of metal. Not the best, not the worst, but exactly what is needed for the song.
And just like Ringo, it's impossible to quantify how many drummers were influenced by his playing.

People have tried to replace Lars’ drum tracks with their own more technical stuff… and it just doesn’t work. Yes there is familiarity bias at play but you can still tell that Lars’ choices just fit the songs right.
Master Of Puppets isn't just the greatest Metallica album, it's the greatest metal album of all time.

This has been my favorite Metallica song for a long time. I almost always get chills with the transition to the chorus riff and the shouted vocals.
