the guy wanted to be a drummer in a band. he managed to get james, kirk, and cliff to play with him. he did everything from a music industry and business perspective to get the band where they are, and keep them going when cliff died. and he has been with this same band for 30 years. that is success by any standard. he found three genuine geniuses to start a band, and who can blame him for not being the best musician in his band? only an egomaniac would choose to play with less talented musicians, given the opportunity to play with the best in the world.

Formulaic as all hell and no incredible instrumentation to save it. It's great radio metal. It's not good metal by any other standard. As far as I am concerned, the band hit their peak with Ride the Lightning and Master of Puppets. Everything after that is pretty much meh, and definitely not worth the 200$ ticket price to go see them live....What gets me the most is how they all really believe they're the shit.

I'm not quite as big a Metallica fan as others on here, but even I have to recognize that they're bannermen of heavy metal at this point in time.

As a fellow black person, who also likes and has been listening to Metallica for the past 16 years, I am overjoyed to see my other "brothers" listening to Metallica. As a musician myself, I can really appreciate the musical aspect of them and I see them as Metal geniuses. That said, now that you have heard "real Metallica", I feel I would be remiss if I did not recommend one of their newest epic creations, "Spit Out The Bone" from their "Hardwired to Self Destruct" album, for your reaction fancy. Trust me, you will NOT be disappointed, as it captures the same "rawness" of Master of Puppets in my opinion

Kirk wore eye liner. Sorry, but he did. And the band who always ripped other bands like Poison for their makeup and clothes, in the 90's Metallica cut their hair (At the same time like it was a business decision) and started wearing silk suits and smoked cigars.
It was the EXACT opposite of what they laid into other bands for doing. Like Hetfield bashing Layne Staley on stage for his heroin addiction, while he himself was an alcoholic.

Master of Puppets is "the"Metallica album. This is the album that established metal as a serious music genre. I remember the day it was released and how heavy music changed from that point on.
The younger kids were handed metal on a platter. But those of us that were there from the beginning know how important this album was and is. I have been listening to and playing metal since the early 80's and this album is still the standard by which all new music gets compared.

Db Jones, I don't have to go further back to RTL. I remember when it came out. I was listening to Metallica when Mustain was still in the band. If you have ever heard of the tape trading days that started Metallica, I was part of that. By the time RTL came out I was already a performing musician playing my own brand of thrash.
I think RTL is the best of melodic Metallica, but MOP is still the album that made metal a serious genre. And I don't mean serious in the world of metal. I mean serious to the rest of the music world.

You guys didn't get a chance to talk about the lyrics, but it fits the tone of the song perfectly. The Master of Puppets is drug addiction. Specifically in the second verse there is "chop your breakfast on a mirror." So it starts off with someone who is already in the influence of the master looking for high. Then you hit the melodic bridge which represents the high. That easy bridge transitions to the harsher "Master! Where are those dreams that I've been after?" The thrash solo represents with post drug crash. It then transitions back to the thrash chorus where the person accepts the drug as the master "Hell its worth all that. Natural Habitat." Followed by "I will occupy. I will help you die. I will run to you. Now I rule you too."

I think the oldest band member was 23 or 24 years old and they finished the album in something like 8 weeks. Think about that for a minute in the context of what kids in their early 20s are able to accomplish.
