    The story is even worse than you thought. Imagine being blind, deaf, mute and not being able to feel feelings. He's experiencing sensory deprivation on an extreme scale. That kind of thing can make someone go insane fast. He has absolutely no connection to the world outside his mind. And now he's doomed to that life. Stuck with only his thoughts for the rest of his unnatural life. Imagine the horror, trapped within yourself, unable to determine weather you are awake or asleep, thinking or dreaming. It's 100× worse than being buried alive. It's probably the closest thing you can get to a literal living hell.

      He does have feelings, I don’t know what makes you think he doesn’t. He lost his limbs, but that doesn’t mean his general sense of touch and ability to feel sensations is gone. He knows when people are around him because he can feel the vibrations caused by their movement. When the shades on the windows are open, he can feel the warmth from the sunlight shining on to him. He becomes aware of the date on Christmas because the female nurse who takes care of him lifted his shirt to expose his chest, and used her finger to trace out the letters _M-E-R-R-Y C-H-R-I-S-T-M-A-S_ on his chest. I mean there’s numerous examples of the fact his ability to feel things is still there.

    The song was based off the story/movie "Johnny Got His Gun" - Story: Joe Bonham, a young American soldier serving in World War I, awakens in a hospital bed after being caught in the blast of an exploding artillery shell. He gradually realizes that he has lost his arms, legs, and all of his face (including his eyes, ears, teeth, and tongue), but that his mind functions perfectly, leaving him a prisoner in his own body.
    Joe later attempts suicide by suffocation, but finds that he has had a tracheotomy that he can neither remove nor control. At first Joe wishes to die, but he later decides that he desires to be placed in a glass box and toured around the country in order to show others the true horrors of war. Joe successfully communicates these desires with military officials after months and months of banging his head on his pillow in Morse code. However, he realizes that the military will not grant his wishes, as it is "against regulations". It is implied that he will live the rest of his natural life in his condition.
    As Joe drifts between reality and fantasy, he remembers his old life with his family and girlfriend, and reflects upon the myths and realities of war.
    The Lyrics:
    I can't remember anything
    Can't tell if this is true or dream
    Deep down inside I feel to scream
    This terrible silence stops me
    Now that the war is through with me
    I'm waking up, I cannot see
    That there is not much left of me
    Nothing is real but pain now
    Hold my breath as I wish for death
    Oh please God, wake me
    Back in the womb it's much too real
    In pumps life that I must feel
    But can't look forward to reveal
    Look to the time when I'll live
    Fed through the tube that sticks in me
    Just like a wartime novelty
    Tied to machines that make me be
    Cut this life off from me
    Hold my breath as I wish for death
    Oh please God, wake me
    Now the world is gone, I'm just one
    Oh God help me
    Hold my breath as I wish for death
    Oh please God, help me
    Darkness imprisoning me
    All that I see
    Absolute horror
    I cannot live
    I cannot die
    Trapped in myself
    Body my holding cell
    Landmine has taken my sight
    Taken my speech
    Taken my hearing
    Taken my arms
    Taken my legs
    Taken my soul
    Left me with life in hell

    Real quick, the subject matter of the song (and clips) come from the movie "Johnny Got His Gun," which was first a book. It's a brutal story, of a young soldier who's had his face and limbs blown off and is being kept alive (but assumed to be unaware) in a hospital. He drifts between memories and hopes he had before, and the terror of being utterly helpless and no one knowing he's there. He finally has a nurse who seems to be trying to interact with him, and he realizes he can communicate at last by tapping his head in Morse code on the pillow. She brings military people who have a conversation with him through Morse, where they ask him what he wants. He thinks for a moment and asks to be put in a freak show, as a useful lesson to the world on the horrors of war. The military people decide to permanently sedate him instead.
    It's a truly masterful work, and will haunt your life once you've read it.

    The thing with Lars is two-fold... he gets shit for some of his live performances, but he also gets a lot of hate for his attitude over things like the Napster war and things like that. People go overboard. He's clearly not the top drummer on the kicks and snares, but he does everything you need and does it well enough, and knows how to arrange a song exactly how it should be. Some of the hate he's brought on himself, but people need to back up to a rational level. He doesn't suck, and you'd be fortunate to have him in your band. And there are moments in the studio recordings that he shines in ways that even the best drummers don't in the studio. Minus St Anger... I don't know why he was playing garbage lids on that one, but that was fuckin trash.

    • @mfree80286
      @mfree80286 Před 4 lety +4

      St Anger is what it is because it was supposed to be trash. Nobody did what they usually would do, it was as close to self-sabotage as you get. Think about it... repetitive composition, no solos, the choice of tuning and riffs, the really off-kilter lyrics in some songs... the band members were hating themselves, and poured it right into that album.

    • @ysinvangulik1004

      Never understood this dislike of his drumming. He is part of a group that created some of the best metal songs ever.

    • @SarahCharles92
      @SarahCharles92 Před 4 lety +1

      I think a lot of the hate he gets is not for the quality of his drumming from their first 4 albums. In fact, the drumming from Kill 'Em All through to ...And Justice For All is actually top-tier in most cases and inspired many metal drummers.
      I think it is his drumming from the black album (Metallica) onwards that people dislike. It is like Lars gave up on being creative and technical with his playing. Around this time there was also the Napster stuff, as well as many rumours going around that:
      1. He didn't really practice drums much any more and
      2. He couldn't even play some of their more difficult older material any more due to not practising (like Battery)
      This dislike of Lars as a 'poser' etc. culminated in St. Anger, which had terrible sounding drums. So terrible, even mentioning the name "St. Anger" is enough for most people to mock the drum sound. I think this was the last straw that sort of 'broke the camels back' as it were, and so Lars was then dubbed a 'bad drummer'. And now people jump on that bandwagon years later despite him dealing with his issues, and improving a lot since then (Death Magnetic had some really good, interesting drumming on it).

    • @jdovma1
      @jdovma1 Před 4 lety +1

      @@SarahCharles92 I agree, for the most part. I would include the Black album in the top-tier era. From Load on I can see what you're saying. And the Napster thing was a decade later so that didn't play a role at that time, but certainly compounded the sentiment people had, if not outright produced it which caused some to retroactively search for reasons to hate him. I think the Black album gets lumped in with the post-thrash Metallica because it was the most polished, highly produced, and mainstream effort from them, which violated the unspoken rules of the rebellious nature of metal, and therefore has the perceived stink of the Load era hovering around it (although I enjoy those albums for different reasons than I loved the classic albums, they're just not the same type of music, obviously). But the thread that was laid in Justice was also there on Black, just mixed in with a few radio hits. His drumming, however, did not feel like a dropoff there to me. I just think the many issues people have with Metallica's evolution through the years gets conflated at times.
      But I loved Death Magnetic. What a great album that doesn't get enough credit. I slept on the newer one for a while. I hated it at first, but gave it a few years and it's settling in.

      It was about makin' money and he was somewhat justified. The generation of metal bands after Metallica were the last ones that were able to buy mansions and shit purely off of record sales. Spotify is more profitable than Napster, but you have to have what would amount to a platinum hit back in the day for a down payment on a house. Modern day rock bands survive on merch sales. It's a totally different ecosystem than when Metallica were coming up.

    • @TheBlackQueen
      @TheBlackQueen Před 4 lety +13

      I'm starting to get sick of this comment. No, that is not the reason why people don't like Lars. People don't like Lars because he has evolved into a really bad drummer. His drumming after the 1980s went down hill rapidly and it's believed that a lot of the drumming on ...And Justice For All was artificially cut and pasted throughout much of the album, suggesting that it was the reason it the drumming sounded as good as it did. I don't think it's the whole reason, but it was very likely the case on Dyer's Eve.
      Apart from that, after ...AJFA, his drumming got much slower, his fills got more simple, his taste in drum mixing was very bad, he rarely practiced on his own unless performing live, he rushes, he slows down, he skips beats, and his rhythms have become unbearably inconsistent. Note, I'm specifically talking about his work after the 1980s. During the 80s, he was one of the most impressive drummer to hit the scene, strictly because he was just a beginner and yet was able to hold a strong double bass beat throughout Kill Em All steadily and perfectly with the rest of the band. Van doesn't understand why people don't like Lars' drumming because we're only suggesting stuff from the good era and the studio versions. Send his some later years live performances and maybe he'll see what we have been complaining about for years. or just show him St. Anger.

      @Angelous Bacon Isn't that exactly what OP is doing? Mine at least makes more sense because, and I can't stress this enough:
      NO ONE USES NAPSTER ANYMORE!
      So why the hell would people today still be mad about that? Not to mention that we eventually found out that he was right about Napster and it's effects on the income for musical artists.
      And plus, all the things I said here were echoed by other Metallica fans/critics so no, it's not just me.

    • @TheBlackQueen
      @TheBlackQueen Před 4 lety +1

      @Angelous Bacon Again I may ask;
      IS THAT NOT ALSO WHAT OP IS DOING?
      I swear, you wouldn't be saying this if I said something you agreed with. This is just how people speak. "Metallica are considered one of the greatest bands of all time", "One is considered one of their greatest songs", "People hated the snare drum sound on St. Anger", et cetera. This is just another form of language we use. There's no way to truly source these claims. We just have to say them based off of what we've heard being in these fanbases/communities for so long.

    • @TheBlackQueen
      @TheBlackQueen Před 4 lety

      @Angelous Bacon You're right, I'm speaking about the people, and I believe I am generally correct in what I said. I am currently one of the leaders of the Metallica Amino so I overlook and read through the things that plenty of Metallica fans say, and these are usually their reasonings for their distaste of Lars' drumming. Just about all of them don't care about the Napster thing either.
      if your argument is that "not everyone thinks this way", that should be a given for any type of generalisation. Obviously I'm not saying "This is every fan's opinion about Lars". I'm implying that this is what people tend to say about him.

      The Korn cover was amazing. Probably no solos because they realized they couldn’t beat the ones in the song so why even try. Also, Korn doesn’t really do guitar solos so doing so wouldn’t have been their style, which I feel all good covers should do - they should pay homage while also keeping that musicians style in tact.

    Lars’s hate comes from him nowadays live. He can be a bit off when he is drumming and puts in unnecessary fills during live performances for no reason. He as you said, if you look at other metal drummers, he is not as good. Still great writer and music genius. Metallica wouldn’t be where they are now without him. And remember, most of the things you have reacted to is the recordings

    • @kosmokenny
      @kosmokenny Před 4 lety +4

      Nah the hate is way older than that, the Napster shit just added to it. Metal heads have been hating him since Metallica was the biggest thing in metal, because he got so much unwarranted attention from people who never listened to any other metal to see how basic he was compared to better drummers.

      Most of their songs were made by James. Ulrich had biggest impact on making Jason quit and albums sounding bad (production, bass and percusion). He is just a biggest dick in this band with bad impact on the band. Also he on their lives is very often sloppy. Worst thing to be in rhythmic section.

      Sure, but what about after that? Most musicians grow, but Lars even admitted he stopped practicing...I respect Lars and understand he was a pioneer, but he refused to grow and that is all on him and the criticism is legitimate for a professional. I used to make excuses for him but recently I can't enjoy metallica how I used to with those overbearing shit beats assaulting me, and the remastered Kill 'em All is ruined with a very harsh ride symbol that dominates each song (even Hit the Lights).

    • @fandiandan
      @fandiandan Před 4 lety

      @@diesel_engaged6358 haven't heard the "remastered" but I'll def check it out. Don't get me wrong I know what youre saying and I do agree. I never knew he just up and stopped, does make me look at him differently, but I still wouldn't say he sucks. Maybe comparatively to his peers he does, but I know I couldn't even do half of what he can on a drum set.

      @@fandiandan in all fairness my Kill 'em All cd still sounds great but the chance to actually play it is so slim but spotify version is what I'm talking about. I love his drumming style on that album just not the mix and wish he kept it up. Seems like his ride symbol almost completely disappeared after that album and feel some little tricks with it could spice things up tremendously for him.
