I went with my friends on July 1st, expecting to be the only people in suits in an empty cinema, but it was sold out and 90% of attendees were in suits. It was amazing, everyone started applauding every time someone did something impressive or there was a butt on screen. And a standing ovation was given at the end.
Same happened here lol when me and my mates went in suits everyone started cheering. Genuinely the best cinema experience I've ever had and it was from fucking minions: rise of gru.
i've always sorta perceived meme culture as a very niche thing that only a relatively small amount of people participate in, but it's crazy to see just how many people were in on that sort of joke.

My brother and a bunch of his friends dressed up and went to a late night showing.
He said the theater was packed with other teens who had the exact same idea but that the vibe inside was pretty uncertain at first as no one knew exactly how hard they were supposed to commit to this joke. Showing up in formal attire was as far as they got. But then my bother began clapping whenever a cameo or particularly dramatic scene happened and everyone else started joining in.
The mood was set after that. No one was unnecessarily loud or rowdy but they cheered and applauded whenever a worthy moment happened as you would in a very hype film. It was all just a good time. My brother concluded that it ended up being the most hype theater he had been in since Endgame. Endgame was the better film he said, but conceded that he probably heard more applause overall when watching Rise of Gru.
Didn't know Anakin liked Minions...
My theatre cheered when the bank guy showed a picture of young Vector

So let me get this straight, when celebrities wear suits to the premiere of their movie it's 'okay' but when we do it it's 'weird'? This is why we can't have nice things...
We should start wearing full on armour then
@@davidty2006 I'll do that at my next Lord of the Rings marathon.
It IS weird, I mean it's harmless so its fine, but essentially it's the middle of summer and people are choosing to wear suits to watch a spin-off of a kids' movie because other people are doing it
I did this with my friends, we were also coincidentally accompanied by another group of guys from my school, so there were like 20 of us in suits for the movie.
I went to see the minions alone last weekend, as someone who's new in Toronto and without friends for the last 6 months I found people dressing on suits like I was, I approached them and became friends almost instantly, I'm going out with them next weekend, this meme cured my loneliness, I can't believe it.
I think my favorite part of all of this is the people who are dressing up to the theater all talk about their experience and how good and fun it was for all the people there, yet have nothing to say about the damn movie itself. It ain't suprising in the least, but it's funny as hell.
I myself participated in this trend, and only now I realised how lucky I was to have a peaceful viewing of the movie;
there was only clapping and cheering(myself included) at the start and end of the movie. The rest of the time it was just enjoyed and respected.
I got my family to go wearing suits, and I have never been more proud in my entire life. Sadly, when we arrived, no-one else in the theater was wearing anything nearly as formal as us.
I went to one of the first screenings on July 1st, and a sizable amount of people in the theater had dressed up. When the movie started, they all knew to cheer until the actual movie started, when people didn't know how hard to commit to the bit. Then, we absolutely ran the theater. My four friends and I would cheer at sny significant moment in the movie and then the whole theater would erupt in cheering. Greatest movie experience in my life.
I remember whenever me and my friends went to see it the people were just like clean up and don’t cuss, so if your planning on seeing this movie just clean up after yourself, don’t throw crap. And be respectful, we only started cheering at the beginning and the end and we’re quiet the rest of the time, like true gentlemen
I totally forgot about how "Devious Licks" had real world consequences. When authorities start pushing back on these trends I can't help but think that it's the small beginnings of a war on memes.
I fully agree. We're seeing a new culture war take shape. Let's just hope it stays fun and not messy.
@@Drekromancer I mean, people who commit to memes too much caused this problem. Like in this one, some of them were throwing bananas on screen, damaging the property and making a mess for janitors, plus harassing other viewers. Memers did this to themselves.
When I went to go see Rise of Gru, about 70 percent of the audience was made up of older teens and adults. And then it was one of only like 2 movies that I've ever seen where the audience clapped after watching it, and there weren't even any "Gentleminions" in our theater. This movie has put the public in a trance
crazy how they just now invented a number higher than a morbillion, the minillion, to express the amount of tickets sold to the movie
In isreal a shit load of teens (including me) went to the movie in suits. But some kids went crazy and they won't let you inside some movie theatres with suits

Truly a despicable move of the gentleminions to be a villain to those people who work in cinema and includes the quality of enjoyment to those who goes to the movie as well.
They left huge disaster to cinemas, leading to GRUesome aftermath...
Truly a villain.
What GRUeling news.
I saw some gentleminions just today. I was in the theater with the two year olds and everyone was talking, shining phone flashlights, and crying during “scary parts”. The theater over had a bunch of people in suits and it was dead silent apart from the movie
When Gru said “It’s Gruvin time”, all of us gentleminions in the cinema got up from our seats, started screaming, flipping, and continuously gruved for 12 hours straight, truly one of the greatest scenes in any movie of all time
We have to talk about the fact that this is post-COVID. I don't know if people would have had the taste for this a few years ago. But after lockdown, it's been hard to find opportunities to dress up, go out, and have a good time. I think that's why this meme took off: because it presents a compelling solution to that problem.
as someone who works at a cinema and has seen countless people following this trend. thank you to those of you who didn't disrupt the movie for others. during the first few days of release we were instructed to perform screen checks more regularly than before because of this trend. while we do appreciate that you wish to see the movie and have fun. please be respectful and mindful of others who are trying to do the same. we already have enough work with keeping on top of the cleaning, please do not make more work for us

Thank you for the lesson as always.
Back in the day going to the cinema was a big deal. I think we’ve all seen depictions of boomers in their youth dressed up for an evening out, something that’s become rarer and rarer nowadays save for big red carpet premieres. In a world where we often can’t afford things to dress up for, we have to find another reason to do so, even if it’s just for a meme.

Close to every cinema chain here in the UK is slowly closing down, especially thanks to previous lockdowns. I imagine the reception made from this trend has done it some incredible good, but then there'll always be the one karen-esque chain that said no to suits, lol
It's wild that in the city I'm in with less than 50 000 people there were a bunch of teens suited up and on their way to the movie theater. Never seen a meme performed in real life so nearby.

The modern world is insane. Gentleminions are real. I love this.
The movie literally sold out tickets on the day I wanted to watch it, which is sad because there were several other gentleminions at that time and I was already wearing my attire, excited to watch the movie and meet other gentleminions, but I was the only gentleminion a few days later and the movie still literally sold out tickets
Honestly the fact i didnt go to the cinema in a suit i got like a month ago for my cousins sweet 16 is going to be one of the biggest regrets of my life.

I wore a suit to the movie with a couple of friends and it was the best thing I have ever done in the entirety of my life.
I actually dressed up fancy to see The Gentlemen, so the temptation to do the same again is beyond tempting lol
I work at an AMC and tbh I can speak for all cinema workers that the whole gentleminions trend was a nightmare for us cinema workers, not only do the teens cause a mess after they leave the theater but we constantly have to babysit the theaters to make sure the teens aren't being disruptive, recording or being obnoxious.
Damm, I used to start to use a suit yesterday and lots of teenagers with bananas try to abduct me in the middle of the street to follow they to the movie theater.

Actually, I didn't even know this was a meme, yet I participated in it. My group of friends have been doing the, "Wear format attire to this mundane event". For example we have gone to Denny's on multiple occasions in formal attire and it is quite fun.
Rise of Gru was one of the movies ever and I can say my experience was an experience.
I cried when Gru said," it's rising time!".
Truly one of the movies of all time.
I love that some cinemas are embracing the meme and holding separate screenings for the gentlemen
Over 60 people from my school all went to watch Minions: Rise of Gru in suits and I feel like the biggest idiot for not going with them because they became TikTok famous and went on BBC News.
No doubt about it. Minions The Rise of Gru is the best animated movie hands down thanks to the memes :)
I think theaters would be much more open and accepting to the trend if people didn't take it to the extreme. Naturally, families are gonna take their kids to the movie with no idea about the meme, and the kid could get upset if they're hearing nothing but whooping throughout the whole movie.
Probably the worst offenders are the ones of people jumping around in front of the screen during the movie and throwing bananas. Not only are they ruining the movie other people outside the meme paid for, but are making cleanup and control hell for the employees just trying to do their job for little pay.
So yeah, I love that getting all formal for Minions has become a fun meme- just don't be an ass.
