  • Lake District Wild Camping. The Solo Summiteer - set off from Wasdale in the Lake District for a solo wild camp in my Hilleberg Atko at Broadcrag Tarn (the highest named tarn in the Lake District) on the Scafell range just below the summit of Scafell Pike. Piched up at 2726ft. My ascent route was via Mickledore, and my descent the following day included Foxes Tarn and the summit of Scafell, the second highest mountain in England at 3163ft. A 9 mile walk with 3700ft of ascent.
    Many thanks for watching - Dave

    Cant emphasise this enough, seriously. Just keep doing what you do, its perfect. Dont change anything. Hearing the pissing rain on top of a fell in an akto and seeing sheep munching at your down boots is bob on. Its a non commercial, honest, humble perspective and massively refreshing. The commercial opportunities will come later if you want them but build your core audience first. So glad I found this channel. Reminds me of the early days of Joe Robinet. Im from Lancashire by the way lol....just spent too many years in the commercial world 🍺😄

      Many thanks JH. Really appreciate your thoughts and advice👍🙏🏻. It’s just me, doing what I love to do, and trying to take the viewers along with me. I just say whatever I’m thinking at the time, there’s no script, and often no words are necessary. Because I do this on my own it’s great to get feedback from likeminded folks who enjoy sharing the experience. Thanks again and ATB - Dave

    We sometimes question our decisions when the wind is relentless all night and the weather is bad but then we look out the tent in the morning, and the beauty of mother nature confirms that the decision to get outside was the right one after all.

    Wow , that wind in the night, I had to take my headphones off! Felt exhausted with you on the descent. Cosy right now in our caravan near Penrith after a few stormy hikes with family this week (wind, cold and kids with wet feet), so right there with you. No wild camp for me this week, but had a good test of the Rab 8-10 shelter, just got to edit the footage. Nice one, cheers

    Nice film mate.. love the clothes peg holding the door open 😂! I’ve got 2 hillebergs and I rate them highly but the bloody doors always unravel.
    I’ve also started putting really small electric bands around the metal zips to stop them clanging in the wind 🤓🤓🤓

    Thank you so much for this vivid depiction of your wild camp. I live in the Cairngorms so can’t currently come down to the Lakes, but I’m definitely up for a night at Broadcrag Tarn when lockdown eases. Your filming technique is superb, thoroughly enjoy watching. The midnight piece to camera looked fun, wind flapping the tent while tucked up in a sleeping bag. Always good to have a solidly reliable tent - I always think it’s worth carrying the little extra weight. Looking forward to your next output. Hoping to get out myself overnight this week. That akto will take some hammer mate, I was up at whiteside back in Feb with my mate who was in his akto & it was a hell of a morning with a max gust of 72 mph I recorded on the skywatch & both the akto & my soulo stood like troopers.. That fox gulley route up scafel is a great route, I've done it a few times from eskdale & the climb up cam spout before you get to there, I'd do it again its a cracking route.nice to see the frost on the tents we had a good frost up on beinn ime last week,certainly looking forward to the winter now.. Can I ask about weight? I’m contemplating Akto or Enan which is very similar but 500g lighter (it lacks the rain proof top vent). Does half kilo make much of a difference? Both your comments about Soulo v Akto suggest it does. Cheers!

    • @TheSoloSummiteer
      @TheSoloSummiteer  Před 3 lety +1

      Hi Peter. I wanted a more discrete coloured tent than my bright red Soulo and initially considered another Soulo in the sand colour. I then looked at the Akto. Still 4 season, but lighter and £200 cheaper than the Soulo. The only real negative with the Akto is the lower headroom but it’s not really a problem unless you are spending a lot of time in the tent on the longest winter nights. It also has a very large porch. I still may end up with another Soulo in sand, but I’m impressed with the Akto and any weight that can be saved is good when you’re old and dragging all your kit up mountains 😁. HTH

    • @petergilbert72
      @petergilbert72 Před 3 lety +1

      @@TheSoloSummiteer thanks, and I get all that, so would you say I’d notice the difference between a 1.2kg tent and a 1.7kg tent when lugging it up a hill? Clearly the Akto version will be better in wet or very bad weather, but I’m just trying to understand whether I’d find that weight difference significant when carrying it on my back? (It needs to be Akto or Enan because I want their big vestibule.)

    • @TheSoloSummiteer
      @TheSoloSummiteer  Před 3 lety +1

      I’m not a gram counter but for me any weight saving is good, but not at the expense of strength. If you’re camping in the mountains the weather can be unpredictable and I’m sure the Akto can cope with whatever is thrown at it. Whether you can feel a 0.5kg difference is a personal thing, I guess.
