Little Scoat Fell - First Outing In My Hilleberg Akto

  • Lake District Wild Camping. Scoat Fell mountain camp in my new Hilleberg Akto, just above Mirk Cove at the head of the Mosedale valley in the Lake District - my route took me up the side of Nether Beck from Wasdale, to Scoat Tarn and on to Little Scoat Fell. As predicted the weather came in just as I got the tent pitched, and that was it for the night; wind, rain, and mist. My first outing in my new Hilleberg Akto tent and it was fine, settled in behind a dry stone wall. My return route the next day was via Red Pike and along the side of Yewbarrow. Typically the skies cleared as I reached the carpark. Really enjoyed it, despite the weather, and looking forward to the next one already.
    Thanks for watching - Dave

    Nice video Dave. Did that route in reverse earlier this summer but camped at Dore End then up to Red Pike and down via Scoat Tarn. I was lucky with the weather though, it being warm and sunny. Loved Scoat Tarn. When I was there it was only me there! Hardly saw a soul for the two days I was out - perfect!

    Fab trip and video Dave. What a cheeky lamb too! Why the switch to the Akto from the Soulo? I have a basic summer tent and looking for a proper upgrade for the autumn. Soulo not available at the moment so looking at alternatives. I like the idea of the space in the Soulo but the Akto would be big enough for just me. You have both - lucky :)

    • @TheSoloSummiteer
      @TheSoloSummiteer  Před 3 lety

      Haha. Glad you enjoyed it 👍. I think the sheep must prefer the Soulo 😜. I went for the Akto in sand as I wanted the option of having something a bit more discrete. It’s also a bit lighter than the Soulo. Disadvantage it’s that it’s not free standing so takes a bit longer to pitch. I reckon there’s actually more space in the Akto, and it’s cheaper. It seems a bit lower profile and wider. Both awesome tents but expensive not always necessary. Just depends on the conditions you plan to use them in. If I had to choose one it would be the Soulo. HTH. ATB Dave

      Lighter in summer but probably the same in winter. You absolutely right it’s hard work and that may not come across in the video. Thanks for watching and ATB

    Hi there, just started watching your videos and I'm finding them immensely enjoyable. Can I ask you what brand are the camping slippers you are wearing. I've looked at the Raab and North Face ones and they seem very expensive for what they are. Is/are yours a cheaper option? Thanks in anticipation.

      Hi Frederick, and thank you. Glad you’re enjoying my videos 👍. My slippers are North Face. Think they were about £35. Expensive I know, but it’s great to be able to just slip them on if you need to nip out of the tent and your boots are soaking wet, or even frozen solid 🥶

    How do you find the akto compared to the soulo? I personally would prefer the soulo. Can’t afford either if I’m honest 😂

      Hi Mike - I’d say, the Akto is lighter, lower and wider than the Soulo. The colour is also really stealth. The Soulo is higher, so better if you’re stuck inside for a long time (winter in a blizzard). It will also shed snow better, and being “emergency red”, should be easier to find if you need to be rescued (I really hope not). Both great tents for all year round mountain use.
