Cairns impressed me so much when I first visited last year. At the gateway of so many nature spots, and the city itself has a diverse, international food and drink scene.

If you aren't up for a scuba dive to the reef you can do snorkeling or a glass bottom boat trip.
With Kuranda most people get the train one way and the sky rail in return. The sky rail gives you another unique view of the rainforest. There's even some with see through bottoms so you get a full view underneath.
They didn't cover it but the daintree rainforest walks another thing you should do.
Then of course there's port Douglas, the Whitsunday Islands. Whitehaven beach is a must see if you have time.
There's also Paronella Park - Spanish Castle ruins in the topical north.
And if you want to encounter crocs.... there's tours for that too.
Lots to do around Cairns and travelling out from Cairns.

I was born & raised in Cairns! Moved to Melbourne a few years ago - and I absolutely love being a Melbourne resident now, but there is still something so special about Cairns.

If trying different foods is your thing, then there is a wonderful tour run out of Cairns where they take you to varied tropical food delights! Just a little further north is Port Douglas, from there you can visit the croc's - the forest - the reef - the river... be aware that the weather controls the time you go there. Avoid the wet season for a tropical north visit (November - March).

On one of my trips to the US some years ago, I was speaking with a man in Jacksonville Florida who said he had been to Cairns. After speaking with him a bit he mentioned that it back in 1945 in the last days of WW2 when he was in the navy.

Hi Phezz I live in Townsville North Queensland we a very fierce rivalry with Cairns. I’ve been there once and never went back. We are about 41/2 hours drive from Cairns, everyone says Cairns is the place to be but I think Townsville has so much to offer plus we don’t get the tourist like Cairns does. We have beautiful waterfalls and swimming holes and rainforest. I hope you get to visit Townsville if you plan to come to North Queensland make sure you come in June, July or August axx

I live in Perth on the west coast but have been to most parts of Australia; Cairns is a fantastic place, one of my wife and mine's favourite places in Australia. Takes about 5 to 5 and a half hours to fly from Perth, which a real bummer because I get very uncomfortable on planes.

When we win the lottery in Australia there is no tax we get the lot. If we invest the winnings and make money we get taxed on the income made on the investment

You really don't have to have a divers licence: the Barrier Reef tour guides have different types of ways you can go under water in a safe way.

A great holiday experience, but Cairns is unlivable as a permanent home! 😰😣 Yes diving is simple there, it's highly supervised (regimented) and beginner safe! 😹

I’ve only been to Cairns once (in winter when it’s perfect) and I seriously wanted to move there. Having a good job and wonderful partner stopped me from leaving Brisbane. It’s not the most exciting place for nightlife, but when you can see the stars so clearly and night wildlife too, I’d rather be out there than clubbing in overpriced backpacker haunts. Wouldn’t say no to a nice traditional pub though.

Little parrots are gorgeous and smart, but might add to your anxiety, not relieve it. They can be highly strung, they live exceptionally long lives and they can be very territorial over you (like hating your wife). Maybe you can have a tortoise 🐢?

Whenever I've travelled to Queensland, I've given Cairns a pass, after the first visit there was... neh. There are many better places than Cairns to see in FNQ. Daintree Rainforest and Port Douglas for the Reef are two of the best.

    • @aussie_mtb_king

Cairns Port Douglas ain't go shit on us our part of the reef is better like Arlington reef and we got Fitzroy Island and green Island we got Harvey's crocodile farm we have the best fishing in Australia so Daintree and Port Douglas ain't got shit on us

And we got Babinda Harvey Creek the pyramid (not the Egyptian ones it's like a really big mountain that people climb up it takes like 5 hours to do) and we are mountain biking paradise we got palm cove Ellis Beach trinity beach a bunch of beaches with crystal clear water that's so beautiful we got the aquarium we got the only bungee jumping in Australia we got the casino with the croc zipline skyrail artillery museum and so much more all Port Douglas got is coffee and chocolate tours hotels wineries sunset sailing croc spotting we got kurranda range bushfire buffet (it's really good would definitely recommend)
