in this Sydney Stoma video I talk about what it is like to have a colonoscopy through the stoma.
I have just gone through it so I am sharing the experience with you.

Thank you so much for posting these videos! I'm in Canada. I had a colostomy done because I'm paralyzed and it's sooooo much easier to deal with. I"m possibly headed for a colonoscopy and your information is extremely helpful. Looks like you use the same bag system as me, so it's good to know about using an open ended bag! Thanks again.

You're a rockstar, I'll have to have my colonoscopy in August which is a year after my surgery for colorectal cancer and permanent colostomy. I'll be put out though, there's no way I could stand to be a awake. Thanks for the info. ✌🏻💕🇨🇦

Had my first colonoscopy through my stoma last month. I had pain relief. Should have asked for gas and air but hate being in hospital any length of time and thought that may delay my getting home in the two or three hours that was required. Staff were wonderful and informative. Watched the monitor to see the progress but didn’t watch as camera went in. I had to spin from stomach to side and back several times due to loops in my colon. It was uncomfortable but recoverable and instantly forgettable once procedure was completed. Glad to get back on my feet and out😊
Hi Catherine. Thanks for sharing your procedure. Having the sedation only delayed my leaving the hospital by half an hour. Also my wife had to pick me up as you can't drive for 24 hours after sedation.
Hi Chris.I had the same procedure done 2 months ago.I found it easier than the traditional route! I sat up on the bed and watched the whole thing.When the scope went in it was just a bit of a tickle.Worst bit for me was at the end Dr wanted to exam defunctioned part of my bowel ie;traditional route! That was no fun.
I've got an end colostomy (temporary in medical terms as i still have rectum) but i'm never having it reversed.I've used open bags from day one as i'd already had 2 resections before stoma formation.Empty 4/5 times a day.I'd seen the consequences of 2 resections which left me needing high dose loperamide every day of my life so when i had another section of damaged bowel i argued for a stoma.Had to be 'insistent' (as Dr now describes me) but my quality of life is way,way better than before.
I found the Plenvu prep way easier with a stoma just had to empty water like output a few times!

Hi. Thanks for watching and leaving a comprehensive comment. You have certainly been through it! Sometimes we have to be insistent with Dr's otherwise we never get what we what, we know our bodies. My stoma certainly gave me my life back. Glad to hear it's changed your life for the better aswell. Again thanks for watching.

Is it normal procedure to get a post op scope? Because if it is I need to talk to my doctor. I think it would definitely be beneficial to have one done. 😊 So thank you for your comment.
@@michellekear3653 I’m due one 12 months after my original cancer surgery, then at 24m and 5 years I think. All organised by my surgical team or specialist nurse. Hope that helps.

Yeah I am a good patient. I stand up for myself when I think I am being fobbed off, but with things like this I do as I am told, I do the prep properly, I do what they ask. I am always very respectful.
Thank for your video! My husband is to have colonoscopy in May. He had surgery a year ago April. His bottom sewn up. He adjusted very well. Just had a CT Scan done again part of checking. Admire you and him for dealing with this part of life.❤️🇨🇦❤️

The colonoscopy went well. No polyps!! The prep part went much better than I thought it would. Attached a long irrigation pouch to my barrier to catch the bulk of output and switched to regular size later in day. Was amazed how well it went. And during the procedure, i didn't feel anything cause I was out.
So had my procedure done with sedation because the surgeon didn't recommend doing without it. USA. Went well. Some pain around the stoma this evening, not sure why. Also the RN who told me she would put a new bag on me afterwards, didn't stretch out the protective ring before applying it. So when I woke up it was choking the stoma. And so I will have to change sooner than usual. I should have given them a closed bag for temporary use till I got home and put on my drainable bag and skin protection and ring properly. My reults were no issues, no biopsy. On track for reconnecting in 3 months.
Hi Anne. Glad it went well and great news no issues. Good news that you stay on track for the reversal. After my colonoscopy they didn't have a clue how to put a bag on properly!
I had a stricture in my desending colon and that is the reason for my End Colostomy.

@@sydneystoma385 I managed to ask a kind neighbour to drive me in and collect me so I checked out and went for sedation! Also I thought I might have a few adhesions that might cause a few corners! It’s odd having a scope through a stoma, but more comfortable lying on my back watching. And I did have a few stuck bits that were sore. Now I know what it’s like I might have gas and air next time, but I think that’s the only scope I get with my follow up. Thank you so much for the clips as it was so helpful to know what to expect with the scope and the prep. These’s no advice given separately if you have a stoma. That’s a bit daunting for your first time but much easier with your advice and support. Defiantly drainable bags needed for the prep!

Hi Susan. Yes I have heard in America they put you to sleep for the procedure. It will be fine. I take it you will have to do some form of bowel prep before? What do they give for that in America?

Hi Chris so glad the procedure went smooth, I didn't realise you still had part of your main bowel left, seems odd when you had all the tail-end removed, does your colon form part of your stoma? I had my colon removed and just recently had the barbie butt surgery, still recovering slowly.
Hi. Yes my large intestine forms the stoma. My Crohn's has affected my terminal ileum in the past and that part had a resection. The majority of my Crohn's was in the rectum, I had ridiculous amounts of fistulas and lost bowel control. So I opted to have all the rectum removed. I hope the rest of your recovery goes well.
I really hope they figure out what is going on I'm dealing with a similar situation idk what's going on I didn't have any sign of active disease in my small at the time of the surgery but since I've had an attack and only have a small,.....
Some of your message is missing I think. It's annoying when there is no active disease yet we are clearly having issues.

Thank you for watching, I am glad I have answered some doubts for you, due to the surgery my wife took me home, you cannot drive for upto six weeks after surgery.
In the U.S you are generally put to sleep during the procedure. Question, before starting procedure,when did you remove your bag? Did you put bag back on immediately after procedure? I got my colostomy three months ago, still learning to live with it.
Hi Jack. That is a really good question and I probably should have covered that. The bag came off just before they put the camera in. The bag went back on fairly quickly afterwards. However, there was no danger of anything coming out as I followed the procedure correctly with the bowel prep. So my intestines were empty. I could see that on the screen, so there was no danger of any output coming out. I have had no output today either. It takes time to learn to live with a colostomy. But overall it's not a problem to live with. If you have any questions feel free to ask me.
Incidentally did the liquid blast out into the bag? I remember you were concerned about it
Hi Andrew. Actually no it didn't. I couldn't even tell it was filling up. It did fill up quickly mind you, it was only because I was lying on my bed with the bag on show I could see it was filling up. I am very glad I used drainable bags!
Have you tried to irrigate your stoma to get your output going more? I have to irrigate everyday or it does not move and I'm always so drained. My energy levels are non existent and my memory is horrible. I will forget what I'm thinking mid-thought sometimes and it's so debilitating. Getting things done for me is very hard.

Gas sounds really nice. I suspect it was the resident mds first time! Nothing for pain or sedation he also did my rectum 😢 We are planning on a reversal in the near future. I believe the majority of the barium drained on the table and was sopped up with lots of towels? Not good news for my nephrostomy 😮 0/10 would not recommend 🎉

I do have a colon. The majority of my large colon is still there.
