Such a great song and singer. Sadly by this time his voice was only a shadow of it’s former glory. I hope you will listen to an earlier version of this and experience it as we first heard it, back in the 70’s. He was extraordinary.

@@christophercombs3501 Indeed. Quite a lot of years after I believe. He first had surgery at the end of the Bat out Hell tour. He was unable to record the follow up album "Bad for Good." Which Jim Steinman recorded the vocals for himself and released under his own name. Some great songs on that album too but Jim Steinman didn't quite have Meatloaf's delivery. Meat came back for the "Dead Ringer" album but his voice was never quite the same again.
The original official concert video of "Bat out of Hell" is much better. This video was filmed after Meat Loaf had a vocal chord hemorrhage which resulted in him losing much of his vocal range. Meat Loaf loved to perform and would not let his declining health get in the way. In 2014 my wife and I saw him at the Planet Hollywood in Las Vegas (Rocktellz & Cocktails) and you could tell he was hurting. His knees had gotten so bad that he had to walk out on the stage with a cane, but as soon as the music started he seemed to be rejuvenated and began stalking the stage as he did when he was a young man.
With every song off of Meatloaf's "Bat Out Hell" album, you must do the official videos for them to get the full intent and impact of said songs.
Don't worry, I've yet to see a single reactor (out of around 50 or so) receive a copyright strike or had the video blocked for any of Meat's videos.
This particular performance was recorded in his later years after at least two MAJOR vocal cord injuries and his voice/range were severely diminished, and the fact that he still sounds somewhat ok should be an indicator of how he sounded before those injuries.

Oh you have to watch the original video for this to truly hear the amazing singer he was. This was after he blew out one of his vocal chords and had surgery.

You should watch some of the videos. They give you a theatrical vision to the songs. Two outta three ain't bad and You took the words right out of my mouth are amazing songs. He was such an amazing man. I've always loved him. He will forever be missed

This was meant to be a Broadway Rock Opera. When Steinman couldn't find backers, he & Meat basically recorded the soundtrack to the production. The BooH album spent most of two decades in the top 200, continuing to sell a bit every month!
It spawned a 2nd & 3rd sequel album: the song It's All Coming Back to me Now is from BooH3.
And is now a Rock Opera currently showing in the West End, featuring the music of Steinman, and put together with the help and blessing of Steinman and Meat before they both sadly passed away. Went to see it for the second time last week and it is honestly one of the best musicals I've ever seen. It often tours (and has previously toured in North America) so if you get chance to see it, I'd definitely recommend it.
My mom used to play this album from front to back at home and in the car when I was a kid, and I'm definitely better off for it. The writing that went into his music was just genius.

In interviews of the band members and family they said he used to put his body through so much and put so much into his performances that every night he would come off the stage and physically collapse and need oxygen. There were a few times they thought he was having a heart attack when he would come off stage. In fact he was hospitalized a couple of times especially in the later years and treated for exhaustion. In fact on one tour where he had a health scare (can't remember what he had done) but he had to sit down during the full concerts during the remaining dates and sang on a stool.

Jim Steinman was the composer on his death in 2021 Marvin Aday aka Meat Loaf said he and Jim were one heart and soul. Because of Steinman's death, Meat Loaf said he would probably die in a year. He did.
I always thought his song "Objects in the Rear View Mirror " was his best. The official video is a tear dropper.
FYI Meatloaf was a huge theater kid and wanted to be on Broadway. That’s why his productions are so theatrical

He's an actor, he's been in movies and on Broadway and a great singer
He almost always chews gum during singing. This is because he had a condition, where he wasn't able to produce enough spit naturally, so he had to chew gum to prevent drying out. He had several conditions, and this video is from the stage in his career, where the health was declining rapidly. You can hear how he struggles to be on key and on beat. Go listen to his 90s stuff when he was in his prime, and you can clearly hear the difference.
In the 70's, the songs were way longer. The original "Paradise by the dashboard light" was 27 minutes long! They had to edit it, because it was too long for albums. So they cut it to around 8 minutes, and Meat thought they butchered it.
The G.I. Joe is Paul Crook, who also produced several of the later albums.

The Lyricist Jim Steinman wrote the lyrics on two well known Meat Loaf albums plus had his own independent Album too
The song is from a (quite old) musical where his character is with a 16 (17?) year old girl at the top of tower where she lives with her parents. That is why he is planning to be gone by sunup.

Their was and only will ever be 1 singer like meatloaf and i happy to say i saw him in concert 8 times and was lucky to meet and greet him back stage . sadly missed , but will never be forgotten , and for those interested you should watch the dvd Storytellers .

This must have been recorded not long before he died as he is a shadow of his former self but still putting on a show. I saw him in the early eighties when he came to England with the bat out of hell tour with a huge motorbike as a back drop and the drummer sat in the middle of it. I went home with my ears ringing, what a showman.
Thanks for your reaction, Britt! You pretty much nailed it with everything you said! The original Bat Out Of Hell concert I saw back in '78 still rates as one of the best I have ever been to! "For Crying Out Loud" has to be next, but I would suggest trying to find a version from earlier in his career if you can!

Meatloaf started his career in musical theater and was an actor before he dropped his first album. He once said in an interview (and i am paraphrasing) "i would not consider myself a singer who acted but an actor who acts like i can sing" he takes all that emotion he leard in his acting career and put it into his singing and to all of his live concerts. Its why he has such a theatrical presence. It was also well known that he'd often collapse after a perfomrance, and they'd keep oxygen tanks on standby for him because he just put so much into the performance that he'd be exhausted after.
Meatloaf frequently passed out during his performances. He has oxygen tanks on standby at every show.
I was so excited when I got to see him at Wolftrap in 2004/2005? Unfortunately, his voice was so damaged the backups were doing most of the work. He couldn’t even keep tempo. It was heartbreaking.
Studio version is soooo much better.
Meat has always been a fantastic showman, but his vocals here are on a steep decline compared to the studio version. I urge you to check out that version, even if it's on your own time 😁

Like I mention before. I saw him in concert. It was f'in awesome. He's a showman & great singer. He also acted in some movies and appearances on tv shows.
You keep hitting the WRONG Live performance - Meat's vocals are shot at this point, and this is a replacement band.
I love how this song is TIMELESS! Me and my friends thought we were "too cool for school" when we were 17 or 18 but this song (that was before our time when released) was loved by everyone, danced to at parties etc. AWESOME
thanks to 1 of my brothers friends, I knew every word to this song before ever hearing it with the music cause he stayed with us for a weekend and this was the only song he sung all weekend. I sat down with him and wrote it out, then I learned it before hearing Meatloaf sing it or the music with it.
Britt, I have to agree with most comments from this reaction and the one front dashboard, these were not from his best, these were after his surgery!!
This was recorded when meatloaf was much older, it's not his best work. Go back and listen to the original album. Back in the 70s. This was done many years after he had lost his voice from the stress of singing. It took him years to get a singing voice
you might want to listen to the studio versions of his music, 70s - 80s, he has a good voice...
You really need to go back and listen to one of the early recordings ... the live ones if you can find them but the studio is outstanding as well. His voice was a fraction of what it once was in this show. He had a period where his health was not good and his voice suffered for that. He did briefly get healthier and was performing again at a high level. When you have a HUGE voice as he had time often takes its toll. One way to know how good he was ... it sounded this good and if you didn't have the originals to listen to you would still love this one.
This was not the first album I ever bought. But is was one of the first 1o I ever bought. But then I had to buy it again. I wore out the first one. but I give so much respect to Jim Steinman too. He was the producer.

Wow, I had no idea he had vocal cord problems later, but it's VERY obvious from this performance...they need backup singers to make him sound halfway decent. Please go back and listen to his original studio recording to sound how he sounded in his prime.
I got to see Meat Loaf live in the mid-90s, and he still had an amazing voice back then.

Meat was an amazing performer. I knew nothing much about him other than Rocky Horror Picture Show, Wayne’s World, and Paradise by the Dashboard Lights (admittedly, a great tune) until he released Bat Out of Hell II in ‘93. That’s when I realized he was awesome!

Britt this is such a sad recording. I was lucky enough to see Meat at the old Hammersmith Odeon for the first time back in 1980 when his voice was at its peak. He didn't have to manage his way through the song like in this performance, he just owned the stage and belted it out of the park. One of the top concert going experiences of my entire life. Please please please go and listen to an earlier version. RIP Meat.
Plus. I saw his show in '89/'90 and it was epic! My left ear is still ringing from standing next to the front end stack. This isn't the best version of the track. Thanx for reacting, Brit. Have your best day ever. BTW, you don't sound like a Brit, hahaha.

Totally beyond awesome, g.i.joe electric guitar 🎸 playing was fabulous especially the race car engine roar off like the guy is peeling off in he car, loved it, if they ever made a movie about Meat Loaf it could be played by Jack Black totally 😊😊😊
he was amazing( he was eddie in the rocky horror picture show ) if you wanna see that he also sang in the show just a bit of his theatrics all his stuff in the 70s were better but as a singer he and Steinman could always interchange with other bands and orchestra's like prince bowie and m jackson and so many others we lost way to soon
To get the best of Meat, you need to do his earlier versions. He had some health issues later on in his life and he lost some of his vocals. By this time he was having trouble and relied on the music and backing vocals more. Meat is one of my favorite singers and I miss him!!
