My best friend Mike saved me - the new, freckle-faced kid - from a life of solitude on the school playground in 1986. A few years later, they discovered his first brain tumor. He fought hard for 25 years. When I lost him in 2016, he had a wife, four kids and three Master’s degrees. He lived his life better than anyone I’ve ever known. And while he was a huge REM fan, this song makes me think about him and all of our good times. Rest easy, brother!

@@HomelessJoe66 This song IS the story of Meatloaf’s extremely abusive childhood with his drunken violent father which Steinman wrote about - a true collaboration! There will never be another Meatloaf. REST EASILY and thank you for the music and the passion!!
Meat and Jim Steinman created some of the most incredible music in the soundtrack of our lives... RIP Meat... I hope you and Jim get the band back together up in heaven...
They did make some amazing creations, but honestly I hope they don't get back together, Jim was always jealous of how aday was being better recognised for the songs than him. There is an interview clip, of the band, and the interveiwer asks aday "what sort of genre would you class your music?" Aday, trying to be respectful says "ah ask jim about our music" Jim cuts in "well I would class MY music as...." I get they should be getting equal credit for their music, but Jim was a complete dick, even though aday always gave him the credit for it. He took out his problems on the guy who was trying to help him.
Was singing along (ok - crying along) to this in the car the other day, thinking about my dad who I lost 8 years ago. A love of Meat Loaf's epic output was something we shared. This loss hurts. We'll miss you, Mr Loaf. RIP. Ride on til morning.

At 41, this songs hit differently. It's such a beautiful reflection in middle age on the experiences that shaped your character, both tragic and enthralling. God rest both Meat and Jim.

Meat Loaf is (or was; the last live performance I saw video off wasn't great) one of the greats, but so is Jim Steinman who wrote most of the iconic songs. Steinman recorded some of these himself, but he just doesn't have the voice to do them full justice. Still good, though.
This was the first song I heard from him and boy oh boy was it a real road trip... He was a ballad master like no other, with the voice to match. RIP legend!
I relate to this song in so many ways. I just finished watching the video and I have tears streaming down my cheeks. Between Steinman's work and Meatloaf's performance, this just opens so many of those old, long forgotten memories. It's bitter-sweet to relive it. It's a beautiful pain, but worth revisiting.
C Tuckeell “I think he’s right behind me now and he’s gaining ground” “Dangerous and drunken and defeated and corroded by failure” “And he grabs me from behind and pulls me back” These are words that SEAR THE SOUL and are the true story of Meatloaf’s abusive father. My mom always cries when she hears this song, she says it reminds her of growing up her step dad beating her and her mom never standing up for her or her siblings she got pregnant at 17 it was 83 in the cold of winter when my dad and her decided to runaway their first attempt was a failure and my dad was arrested when he got out he visited my mom at school and asked if she wanted to try again so they ran away again got help from a preacher named Travis and his wife Bobby who bought them a bus ticket gave them food and clothes then they ran to Oklahoma that was 37 years ago and despite all the hardships they faced they're still together.
It has that effect on me too. Lost my mom when I was 15, my best friend died at 38, which was 31 years ago. This song brings it all back as if it was yesterday. Brilliant lyrics and a flawless delivery.
I'm glad she found happiness...so sorry she had a rotten upbringing. Most animal mothers would let themselves be torn to pieces if necessary protecting their babies from predators. Human mothers turn a blind eye, shrug, and let predators into their homes and repeatedly maul their children. Sad, really...
It doesn't matter how many times I listen to this. If I sing along, I always end up crying. When it came out it felt like reading a book or watching a film. Heartbreaking
"we got our dream reborn and our upholstery torn..." - Jim Steinman was the greatest, a true legend. In a million years I could never write lyrics like that.
Meatloaf's songs meant a lot to me growing up. Especially "Objects in the Rear View Mirror May Appear Closer Than They Are". Now that's a long title :-) The song reminds me of my friend Steve that left life way too early. It was written and composed by a less infamous musician and songwriter, Jim Steinman. Meatloaf breathed so much life into the song. Songs are amazing... You can touch people and help them while you are alive even after you are gone... Not too many things are like that. Meatloaf is gone but his songs will live on for many years to come to touch new people and help them.
Chris, Meatloaf breathed life into it because it was HIS story of his violent abusive alcoholic father! “He’s behind me and he’s gaining ground” was what he felt his entire life but his massive talent still couldn’t be crushed! May he Rest Easy now ❤️
On the Dan rather interview (CZcams). Meat Loaf was asked, what is the one thing that bothers him more than anything in the world. He responded when people type his name as one word. Good job 👌
The way he sings "and I grew up with my best friend, Kenny" really gets me. I have always remembered this video. Watching it again after all this time was actually very emotional for me. Meatloaf was truly awesome. You don't know what you got til it's gone, and now he is. I hope he's performing his ass off to god right now. So long, you rockin' legend 🖤🤘🦇
I come here, mourning, thinking I might even be the only one crying to this song. Alas, at least you lot are all here. And being sad is shit, but being sad alone is even worse. At least, here we are, not alone. Assembled in the spirit of Meat Loaf, united in his poetic lyrics, distinctive guitar strum and this enormous timbre of his voice. Thanks for that great gift you gave us, we'll see us again some time in the future.
Brainzz, You are Definitely NOT alone in your profound sorrow at the loss of such a massive talent who was a part of so many of our lives growing up and beyond! I LOVE your phrase “Assembled in the spirit of Meatloaf, United in his (and Jim Steinman’s) poetic lyrics” Beautifully said! 💞
Meat Loaf and Steinman's music was loved by a lot of people - Bat Out of Hell is still in the top 10 best selling albums of all time, Paradise by the Dashboard Lights still holds the record for most time spent on Top 100 songs list. They had a falling out after Bat Out of Hell, bur eventually patched things up and then did Bat Out oh Hell II. Rock and Roll has lost 2 great artist who did their best work together, they will both be greatly missed.
@@shawnpeat Shawn, Well said and who needs the flippin misguided Hall of Fame which has ignored both Meatloaf and Jim Steinman’s incredible contributions! They will both live on and be revered in OUR memories as part of the fabric of our lives and that is true Commemoration!
Meat Loaf and Jim Steinman: "Close as any brothers that you ever knew" They are now once again reunited in Rock n Roll Heaven collaborating on another epic masterpiece that ,sadly we here on earth will never get to hear. Rock on, both of you and we shall continue to enjoy the legacy you both left behind.
The part about his father gets me. I had a wonderful family, but I work in special education with behavioral disabilities and a lot of the kids are there from PTSD related to child abuse.
I say this jim steimmen and meat loaf were the nearest equivalence to Elton John and Bernie Taupin you could imagine seems ironi that they've passed away thank god they left behind a treasure trove of wonderful music RIP jim and meat You will never be forgotten
The sad fact about this song is it tackles real life situations. It's very dramatic and meat tells the story with such conviction. It's heartbreakingly brilliant
@@ingenerchik His father was a very cruel man and beat him always, told him he was nothing and would never be any thing. Guess he showed dear old dad! hope the fact most of the world knows meatloaf and loves him. I bet meatloaf is playing on million's of devices today and the past few days. Pure love for this man in the bottoms of our hearts don't know why the need to add "little fatso"
the writer and the singer were true artists. I could listen to Meat Loaf songs for hours and hours. He died way too early, but right now he’s up in heaven singing every night.❤
My brother retired yesterday as a firefighter/paramedic. He survived cancer, injury and circumstance to see his children grown and making their way in the world. Kudos my hero. Every scare from the past 25 years comes back like a demon to remind me of the lives I still need to guide to the future. I want my brother’s example to be like that rear view mirror. In my face, showing me how to be a father.
But it was long ago, and it was far away Oh God, it seems so very far And if life is just a highway, then the soul is just a car Rock In Peace, Meatloaf.
My Mother was a national choral award winner. She sang in Carnegie Hall. She sang in the church choir. She was often a featured soloist as an alto with a two octave range. She loved Meatloaf. She could sing any Meatloaf song the same way that she would sing any song from George Frederick Handel's Messiah. She also made an amazing meatloaf. I miss my momma.
ohhh..meat...this song Breaks my heart..it's Beautiful..but i can hardly stand to listen to it....because it reflects too much of my own life...some scars never heal...& some horrors never let go. i lost so many friends long before we were grown up...and my tormentor was a step mother, since the age of 2....i hear ya, brother. Love You. *tosses a hug in yer general direction, where ever that may be now*

I often wonder if our enemies feel same wouldn’t want it to be just us western nato soldiers .are enemies reading these comments and laughing at wot they did to us calling us pussies feeling emboldened by our weakness. I for one will not give them satisfaction
All the vídeos of Meatloaf was máster pieces, can t help share a tear for him but I will always remeber him trough his great songs. Rest in peace meatloaf ❤
Please, I beg of you God... Bless this man's soul. Please Bless this man's soul. If anyone deserves it, it's this man. He is still a car that drives souls to you
I remember when this album came out. I was in such a dark place in my life. Struggling with depression, and alcohol. I woke up one morning with a bad hangover. A voice inside my head said this is not okay. This will not solve the problems you are having. So I grabbed my headphones and this cd and went on long walks and did alot of soul searching. I've been sober ever since.
I just lost my best friend of 55 years unexpectedly. We went to Meatloaf concerts together, so many other concerts. We dated together, the bar trips, fishing, sitting in his garage and listening to the stereo while smoking. Cheap beer underage while we sat in our cars at the lake with our friends. Both from poor families who made our way by working hard and playing hard. He would travel a thousand miles to come help his friends. I always knew he was there and me for him. Closer than my four brothers. Now so far away, god bless you Tommy until we're together again.
You made me tear up, beautiful message beautiful memories I hope my friendships will last as long as yours did my friend. Rest in Paradise to your dear friend. ❤
Just came across this song. People may be haunted by their pasts, but if you can come back from it and become a better person then the object in the rear view mirror will never bother you! Stay strong kings and queens!
If I could say one thing to someone considering shooting up their school it would be what my father told me when I considered suicide in eighth grade: "All you gotta do is survive four more years, and then you'll never see them again." Sage advice, it was.
Thanks for that! Encouragement is needed so much more at this time than any other in my memory for most folks all over this world. Things always get better if u hold on.
I have been around for awhile at 76 I've heard many artists but meat loaf has been one who gets to the heart n soul of every song he does he reminds me of my dad who although he was a professional works his butt off for his 3 boys was in the Army reserves for 37 years, got to be C. O. I see a lot of appreciation for Meatloaf in the comments, but can we also appreciate Jim Steinman, who wrote and composed this beautiful song?
Few people have written songs that even approach Steinman's ability to tear your heart out. That's genius.
He will be missed.

Another legend has been taken from this world. RIP. My friend and hero
Not even a year ago, we were playing this for Jim. And today we’re all here again to celebrate the life and music of Meat. RIP both of you
R.I.P Meat Loaf, your music is timeless and such an inspiration, a true talent that will be sorely missed
"we got our dream reborn and our upholstery torn..." - Jim Steinman was the greatest, a true legend. In a million years I could never write lyrics like that.
очень тяжело смотреть без слез....(it's hard to wathcing without tears) From Belarus with love...❤
Meatloaf's songs meant a lot to me growing up. Especially "Objects in the Rear View Mirror May Appear Closer Than They Are". Now that's a long title :-)
The song reminds me of my friend Steve that left life way too early.
Good job 👌
🤗🤗🤗🤗🤗🤗🤗🤗🤗I just want to hug you. ❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️
Gutted to hear that Jim died. He was the best song writer ever
Also RIP Meatloaf. He was the best singer of all time for me
Yeah I'm gutted, too. R.I.P.
Its really sad I was crying abit
@@randomtransportguyx4397 I was as well
The way he sings "and I grew up with my best friend, Kenny" really gets me.
I have always remembered this video. Watching it again after all this time was actually very emotional for me. Meatloaf was truly awesome. You don't know what you got til it's gone, and now he is. I hope he's performing his ass off to god right now.
So long, you rockin' legend 🖤🤘🦇
❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️🙏🏻🙏🏻🙏🏻🙏🏻🙏🏻🙏🏻🙏🏻🙏🏻🙏🏻
People should really show this kind of appreciation when a person is still alive really...
Well said Brainz, we are not alone, there are millions of us today, playing his CDs again, or like I am now looking at all his songs on CZcams
We are all crying. He touched out hearts. I have a hole where he was. Never will be filled.
Devastatingly beautiful song.
I will never get tired of listening to his songs, even when they make me cry.
Meat Loaf and Jim Steinman:
"Close as any brothers that you ever knew"
They are now once again reunited in Rock n Roll Heaven collaborating on another epic masterpiece that ,sadly we here on earth will never get to hear.
Rock on, both of you and we shall continue to enjoy the legacy you both left behind.
Still there in 2024 and for ever and ever as long as I am living, Iam 57 at the moment.😂
I am 47 from Asia, we all grew up with this sound.

I'm only 15, but I love this song
Who's heart doesn't break to this song regardless of the year?
Tyler Murdie this one kills me every time.
When the sun descended and the night arose..... Heartbreaking.
Each life is full of tragedy and wonder. Well, of course, some get almost only tragedy but for most of us.
This song always makes me think of my late best friend. He is completely irreplaceable.
The part about his father gets me. I had a wonderful family, but I work in special education with behavioral disabilities and a lot of the kids are there from PTSD related to child abuse.
RIP Jim Steinman. Gifted songwriter.
Now that I'm getting older, I really understand the song.
Meat Loaf was the human incarnation of the word “epic.”
Godspeed Marvin Lee Aday(Meatloaf), and Jim Steinman. We will never forget your songs.
RIP Meat. It was you and your music that taught me screw what everyone else, be authentically yourself and have fun. Legends never die x
RIP meatloaf good songs snd movies
🙏🏼 🕊 RIP meatloaf you will never be forgotten there's not a dry eye in the house 😢😢😞
Don't know what you said but yeah.
@@amac6483 He said very nice thing. Indeed, Meatloaf will be missed.
Agreed!
This is Romanian. He says he calls his meatloaf after his beloved favorite artist Meatly Loav
@@ingenerchik yea Romania does not use Cyrillic letters it is Russian
Rip Jim steinmen you wrote some incredible songs
I say this jim steimmen and meat loaf were the nearest equivalence to Elton John and Bernie Taupin you could imagine seems ironi that they've passed away thank god they left behind a treasure trove of wonderful music RIP jim and meat
You will never be forgotten
My heart breaks, I can’t remember when Meatloaf was not a part of my life.
❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️
one of my favourite things about humanity is that some of our most beautiful, transcendent, romantic, poetic music comes from a guy named "Meat Loaf"
So true brother
It was his high school nick name
I laughed out loud at this.
Dude, that was a good one!
Fun Fact: His real name is Marvin Lee Aday
Steinmans epic lyrics. Matched by meats epic theatrical delivery. Made for each other. 👍
Definitely. Rock opera
Hard to believe it has been 27 years since this was released! Seems like yesterday!
Rest in peace, Meat Loaf.
Some of our dreams go up on smoke...but DON'T give up . To each of you who lived such trauma, life still has meaning❤ I know first hand!
The sad fact about this song is it tackles real life situations. It's very dramatic and meat tells the story with such conviction. It's heartbreakingly brilliant
That´s Absolutely Right
It is his own story. His British father and his Texan mother abused the little fatso to no end.
❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️
RIP MEATLOAF .
the writer and the singer were true artists.
But it was long ago, and it was far away
Oh God, it seems so very far
And if life is just a highway, then the soul is just a car
Rock In Peace, Meatloaf.
Jim Steinmann was a genius, he will forever be remembered as one of the greatest song writers.
Love You. *tosses a hug in yer general direction, where ever that may be now*
Know the pain you feel.
It hurts.
I have PTSD. Some days I'm ok and some days I want to die. It hurts today. Thank you Meatloaf for helping me get through today.

Hang in there 🌹rose!
I am a huge fan of Meat loaf... Link up with me. Email: gotomohawkjoseph@gmail.com
sometimes that voice is faith that someone we can't even see has in you.. glad you came through it..
@@raypeters7449 you know my friend, I believe you're right still sober btw. You have an awesome day and God bless 🙏

@@melissaleblanc1248 I hope you have a wonderful life with amazing friends! Treasure those who have the greatest hearts.
Goodbye Meat. Thank you for everything. 💔
Just came across this song. People may be haunted by their pasts, but if you can come back from it and become a better person then the object in the rear view mirror will never bother you! Stay strong kings and queens!
True that.
If I could say one thing to someone considering shooting up their school it would be what my father told me when I considered suicide in eighth grade:
"All you gotta do is survive four more years, and then you'll never see them again."
Sage advice, it was.
Thanks for that! Encouragement is needed so much more at this time than any other in my memory for most folks all over this world. Things always get better if u hold on.
Yeah, maybe, but some of us were whole back then in the 90's, had to look up when life keeps dragging you down
I have been around for awhile at 76 I've heard many artists but meat loaf has been one who gets to the heart n soul of every song he does he reminds me of my dad who although he was a professional works his butt off for his 3 boys was in the Army reserves for 37 years, got to be C. O. Of ft Hamilton medical unit for 14 years well talk about your heros, that to me is a hero who need no Pat on the back he knows what he did an listening to meat loaf just brings a tear to my eye after all these years pop thank you we love you no one could hold a candle to you thanks Dad
