- Hiking the Three Capes Track in Tasmania had been on our bucket list for years, and completely surpassed our expectations! Known as one of the best multi-day treks in Australia, this 4-day, 3-night 48km trail follows the coast of the Tasman Peninsula, offering the most incredible ocean views you could ever imagine.
We booked our Three Capes Track experience independently rather than joining a full guided tour, and we're glad we did. The trail was perfectly maintained with signs the entire way, the cabins were modern and warm, and the beds (yes, beds!) were so comfortable it was hard to wake up in the mornings.

I have wanted to do this walk for some time but injury has prevented it. My husband and I are hoping to do it next year. Previous to watching your video I was thinking we would have to go on a guided tour with accommodation and support provided but you have given me hope and fueled my adventurous spirit. I have shared it with my husband so hopefully we will prepare and be fit enought to take it on. Thanks for sharing and giving all the detail.
Really helpful video guys. First watched your overland trek video earlier this year ( 2023) before a mate and I completed the trek ourselves. How amazing is Tassie for hiking and touring! Doing the 3 capes trek as a family trek in late March 2024 so now have a much better idea of what to expect and what not to bring. Hi, my partner and I walked the Three Capes in February last year. Absolutely loved it.
One thing that would be nice to point out is how the waste is disposed of. I found it amazing the effort the rangers etc go to to maintain the environment. The rangers were so professional and helpful.
That is amazing you and your partner did it last year. Such an incredible hike and place. We absolutely agree. The rangers do so much more than what people think. The human waste situation definitely was interesting. With their drop toilets and storing it. Crazy they helicopter the storage containers in and out. The rangers are amazing people.

Thank you so much Blas. Sorry about the late reply. Glad you liked our video. I think you need a reasonable level . It you do day hikes already, you will be fine. The first two days are easy with no elevation and short distances. Day 3 and 4 is a long distance and little elevation . These days push people a bit. But take you time. There is no rush. This hike is apart of the paid hike. It is $495 AUD per person and you stay in the cabins, they had memory foam mattresses, stretching equipment, have a hot shower on night 2 and kitchen with all the cooking supplies you need. It was nice to have a little luxury.
If you want to do it on your own, you can but only via Fortescue Camp. You can hike out to Cape Pillar and Cape Huay but you have to stay at the national park camps in a tent. You will miss out on the first 2 days of the Three Capes but get the last 2 days of the hike. The hike name is a bit cheeky as on the Three Capes Hike you only go to 2 Capes (Cape Pillar and Cape Huay) and look at Cape Roaul. You can hike Cape Roaul with out paying also. It is a day hike.
It is totally up to you what kind of hike you do but you do see the same thing, you just sleep different and you bags will be different weights. These capes are incredible.

With the water, they have rain water tanks at each hut where you can fill up your bottles. The national park recommends taking water purifier tablets but we didn't and were fine. It is totally up to the individual. Happy hiking.
Thank you for still replying, the hike was amazing though we had a fair bit of rain and mist which meant some views were a little limited. We took purifier tablets though we didn’t use them we just boiled our water. I would urge anyone that loves to hike to do the trek, it’s a once in a lifetime experience 🙂

Thank you so much. We hope you had a great hike in August. Most of our video was filmed on our GoPro. We did have our Sony A7iii camera for photos. It was much easy to film on the GoPro while hiking. Our bags were about 9kg each. They got lighter as we were eating the food. :)

Yes, I did. The weather was great. It Warm.enough during the days to not wear a jacket but was cold at night.
Had rain and very light rain on 2 days 1 I don't even pull my rain jacket out for and the other had tiny bits of haul. I was up and gone by 6am each morning though as I was put in the same room as some noisy people. They would drink all night then come in around 1 or 2 am. So I got up at 5am made noise and left at 6am so wasn't great on those things.
It also meant I was at the next lodge some days before thoese people had even left to move on.
All up it qas a damn great walk and I'd love to do it again this year.
Super easy and you don't have to carry much stuff compared to other hikes.
First might even had a big thick steak.

No, not at all. We bought everything we needed. One lady in our group did say she wish she bought a blow up pillow and a Power bank but that was the only person I heard say something. We took hiking pole which you do not need, unless you have problems with your knees.
What size backpack is yours Alesha, noticed it's a Denali which I'm thinking of getting just debating between the 60 and the 70l any thoughts on them would be fantastic . I'm doing the three capes later this year so just slowly getting prepared 😀
Hi Jemma, I didn't have my 60lt backpack with me so I quickly went to Anaconda and bought a 50lt backpack. It was a little small but did the job. Personally I would recommend a 60lt. You would have pretty of space to pack everything that you need. The food takes up the most space but that decreases as the days go on. Such an amazing walk. What fitness level do you think you would need for a trek like this? Had to laugh when you were taking photos of the mushroom, I took so many of little blue mushrooms I found in New Zealand at Lake Matheson. Katie
The mushrooms throughout the forest were awesome. I took so many photos. With the walk having a reasonable fitness level would be fine. You don’t have to carry too much as do much is provided. That is less weight on your back. Day 3 and 4 are the longest days for walking. Being able to walk/hike for at least 7-8 hours (with breaks) is required. It is an amazing trek

Absolutely. There were so many women and men doing it solo. You met people in the evening but can be on your own or hike with others you met during the day. It would be a great first multi day hike solo 😀

Think it was March. Just be prepared for all weather anytime of the year. March was a great time. Little rain but no worries. :)

We went in January/February. August definitely will be chilly. People do it. Make sure you have very good equipment. We saw the Southern lights down south near Port Arthur when we were there in March. Hope you get to see them. :)

You can do this track without the huts, traditional camping. You’ll save $500 each too

Hi Joe, unfortunately you can’t as it is a National Park. There are lots of other hikes near that are not in the National park where you can take your dog. 😀
Another gentrified walk in Tassie. Such a pity.
