Thanks Tim. I remember either writing up a suggestion or talking to Chris about how Intelligence was too important for making a decent character. I thought the SPECIAL values should affect them in some way so you could make a strong idiot and be still able to pump up Unarmed/Melee.
You ended up giving Dennis Presnel and myself an additional design credit in the game (manuals had already been printed months earlier), I think primarily because when we wrote up feedback, we also provided suggestions. I was so irritated by the original HP gain per level being only if you had enough Endurance, you needed 4 to get 1hp. I nagged Chris and you to make it a base gain per level with an additional amount based on half your endurance, and I think that's what went in. Jason also had me write some dialog for the BOS and a few generic responses that I think were in the Hub.
It's still the thing I'm most proud of being part of.

    • @oasntet
      @oasntet Před měsícem +2

Yeah, it's hard to balance effort in development vs payoff. Like, if it was just one of several play strategies that fed into the big plot and unlocked different outcomes for quests and the main plot, sure, but then the devs have to put a ton of work into a feature that is meant to only apply to some PCs.
I'd rather see base building implemented as quests to help out a specific town and then see that town grow over time. Do a bunch of work to improve Shady Sands' trade routes and access to resources and watch it grow. But actually laying out and building the town is meh; not enough bang-for-buck to bother. Maybe provide some options for which way a town grows and when, but pretend an NPC is doing the actual architecture work.
If there's a defend-the-town quest or plot point, maybe a minor defense-building minigame?

I think the gold standard when it comes to remakes the original Resident Evil remake takes the first place.
Shinji Mikami stated his goal was to implement the ideas he could not back then due to resources/tech. He brought better graphics, voice acting, script and he added all plot stuff he had to cut. He left the core gameplay practically untouched, except for the crimson head mechanic that added a layer of complexity to the game.

With Outdoorsman, I would do it like this: You get low outdoorsman, you get the more basic encounters and the low yielding ones and the better encounters are more rare. Raising it does not give you less encounters, but gives you more options to accept or evade the encounters, and also more chances for better ones. I am happy when I can choose not to fight some random tribal savages with knives, but then I get offered to meet for example a hermit and he may have some interesting cave nearby.

      @FluffySylveonBoi Před 8 měsíci

@@cleverman383 Yes, but these are the rare special encounters.
And sometimes it gives you bad ones when your luck is too low.
But I wondered about various types of non rare encounters, like basic ones, less common and uncommon, these would be affected only by outdoorsman, so basically you would get the "better" ones with high outdoorsman not just the basic radscorpions and half naked tribals.
So it would work like: basic value Outdoorsman (15-20% I think) would show the approximate chances of encountering the good encounters, which would then be around 15-20% and then when you go up to 100%, you will almost always have the better encounters, but there would be about 10% chance to still encounter the weak ones, but you deduct your Luck value from that chance so with Luck 10 and Outdoorsman 100 you would only get the good encounters, but with Luck 1 (if that is even possible) and Outdoorsman 100 you would get 91% for better encounters. This chance can be raised by going above 100% though, so unlucky characters only need to spend more skill points if they want to get the best.
Outdoorsman can also be used for spotting clues (little detective work in some quests, would work together with perception and raise your chances of finding things even if PE is not high.)
One more thing I would give to Outdoorsman is map travel speed which would be affectted even when you go way beyond 100%.
Luck would mostly play a role in increasing the chances for the rare, unique ones as well as placement before fight and low luck would still give you some unique bad encounters.

Thanks for sharing your thoughts and ideas with the community, I’ve always been fascinated with game development and writing. One suggestion I have would be expanding the conversation option with NPCs. In the original game having the option to ask a companion a general keyword that could cause them to say some info made them seem more lifelike…until they don’t know a keyword and don’t get the concept of what radiation means lol. I love these ideas! I know you talk a lot about wanting to spur a player into playing again, but something that was really difficult for me in Fallout was the invisible timers for saving all the different towns from mutants! The solution that I (not a game dev or expert) thought would be nice would be a prompt at certain intervals, either a pop-up or some kind of terrified survivor that tells the player like "The mutant armies are marching north..." or "The mutant army has grown in force, there are rumors that they are marching to claim a settlement!" or something to that effect.
I know saying "they're going to shady sands" would prompt the player to GO there instead of fighting the mutants/master, but something to just say "you need to get back to work" because there's not really anything in the game or manual that says that there's a time limit that's causing those endings.

Hi Tim! What are your thoughts on the myriad of Classical Fallout mod/games out there?
There's some really great ones that came into fruition this decade ranging from totally new universes to SOMEHOW making classic fallout into an MMORPG, have you seen any of them?
In my book having people still working on mods and expanding your universe almost 3 decades later surely must be something some kind of highest achievement when creating a game.
Would be fun to hear your thought on this!

I hear you frequently speak on playing as a character class and I think this ties into your TTRPG passion and perspective. I never really played a TTRPG, my experiences were formed by playing a majority of video games where classes usually didn't mean that much of a difference. Examples I could think of would be say Gauntlet or the first Diablo. Classes don't matter that much if you have enough quarters in the former or in the latter level up enough. I think the loss is on my part here because I am fascinated by hearing about people's TTRPG experiences (but usually more so on the lore) but my take on playing a game has been less, "Survival expert with a penchant for tinkering on computers" or "Charismatic leader and doctor with an extensive army" or "big strong brute fighter with amazing luck" so much as whatever attributes guides recommend for best playthrough. Maybe I'm having trouble seeing class in a video game or maybe I don't feel inclined to roleplay since I'm usually playing games by myself and letting the game reveal itself to me and I don't immerse myself much. I suppose from Fallout's entire series, if I were to pick a class, mine would be akin to a chaotic good thief/ninja/rogue type because I like the idea of striking without being seen and having massive effects from the surprise and avoiding fights I don't need, or basically Natalia Dubrovhsky.

I would assume like many other new viewers I have only recently stumbled upon your channel due to the CZcams algorithm + the new TV show. I’ve been a fan since the original game but was quite young when they came out (probably too young to have been playing games like Fallout haha) so consequently had really no idea who made these games. I only recently learned more about who Brian Fargo was and the history of Interplay, and now learning more about you and listening to all the interviews of the members of the team and other stories shared on this channel has just been such a treat. Thank you so much for your contributions to this art form and for this fantastic channel. Not sure if you will see this or have time to respond to a comment on an old video but one question: given the massive success of BG3 what do you think about the idea of a new Fallout game in an updated version of the original CRPG style? Not sure if you are under NDA for anything like this or if you have addressed the idea already in another video, but since you explicitly mentioned in this video that you wouldn’t want a remake to be a new game per se I’m curious about your thoughts on the concept. I love Bethesda (also played Daggerfall at way too young an age haha) but for me, Fallout will always be best in its original genre and I’d love to see that return. I really enjoyed Wasteland 3 for this reason. Anyway, thanks again for everything!

I think the only thing that ever showed up was a texture file of Tandi's face from FO2.

Hey Tim. I think some of the changes are really good. Hearing about the locations having different states depending of the actions is really cool. I know a game that does this really well, it's call kenshi. In this game if you kill certain npcs in certain locations, some of the cities change for better or worst, this is called world states. You can even start a war between faction or completly exterminate a faction. The game was made by one guy during a process of 15 years of work. It has some of that buggy charm and its inspired on classic fallouts. Being a post-post apocalyptic samurai inspired sandbox. I think you will enjoy it. And if you get to play it, remember that any action has some effect on the player stats.

So many brilliant ideas here TIM! I would really look forward to a remake you'd make of Fallout with most of the original team maybe.
I personally wouldn't remove the level cap. I would maybe have a diminishing returns near the end of leveling, so maybe if the level cap is lvl 20, the player would reach their potential at level 15 and still be able to grow until level 20, but in a much limited capacity where it wouldn't impact the capabilities of the player but just prepare them for a battle (critical or not) I think. (Fine tuning?)
I would agree, with the updated art since you aren't that limited to hardware today as you guys were in 1990's lol. Although I would argue, sometimes lower detailed artwork gives me more to flesh out with my imagination which ads to the player agency over their story or journey. Also, you are able to get away with turn based mechanics more easily I think aswell.
I wouldn't tamper with the mechanics, as I feel it's brilliant as it is. I am currently doing a playthrough with mutliple starts just to document the differences and my actions affect each replay or test.
I love how each point matters in the SPECIAL system and affects what type of character I want to play. For instance, If I want to shoot everything, I can compromise on Endurance, but the con to that would be melee enemies would make tender meat out me up-close. Also, ammo is limited, but then maybe relying on a backup melee weapon would come into play which can be exciting. Maybe a more survival horror based element can be cool to it aswell such as the Resident Evil type of games where ammo is scarce or pricey.
I also dislike base building as it takes a long time to build a base in Fallout 4 for example, and the payoff usually isn't worth it, because of it's custom nature, lacks depth or quality when you spawn waves of generic enemies attacking it and trying to defend against their attack, it becomes more of a chore later down the line as you have to present each time to be in control.
What I always would like in an RPG wouyld be to join 1 faction, and one faction only instead of being a jack of all guilds so to speak. I didn't like the Elder Scrolls style of being everything, I would rather want to specialize and create a story with my faction. Maybe perks of having them as followers and having more followers with each rank in that faction.
There is a lot to digest, I apologize, but these thoughts stood out to me based on what you mentioned in the video. Thanks for your hardwork so far and the legacy you have given us in game development! I am enjoying my Fallout playthrough.

I think the reactivity stuff is an awesome idea. I LOVE it when games react to my decisions, even small ones i might not think about until the game reacts to it.
On that note, as someone who makes a lot of stealth characters, i think you should also consider disguises or costumes. If you wear certain armor, NPCs may treat you differently, especially faction armor. Out of all the RPGs with stealth mechanics, precious few allow me to take a guards armor to help me get somewhere im not aupposed to be, unless it was specifically part of a quest.
Kenshi has a rough disguise system, where looted faction armor gave you a percentage chance to be recognized as that faction, based on the number of pieces you were wearing, your stealth skill, and the faction of the NPC noticing you (same faction NPCs were more likely to see through the disguise).
I think it could be expanded upon in a lot of interesting ways, to allow some interesting gameplay options.

A few of these ideas ended up happening in Skyrim and it went a long way towards making you feel like you had an impact in the game. Oh look, a fort full of bandits. Clear it out, come back a week later, and the Imperial Legion has moved in. Guards will remark on your armor, your weapons, have special dialogue for artifacts you might be carrying, it was really neat. It's neat when you feel like you're a part of the world and can have an effect on it.

I really like the idea of kind of merging a skill point and action based system where you still get points to level up, but the more experience you gained doing certain actions gets you bonuses to those skills. Say you spent an entire level punching things you would get skill points to assign wherever you wanted but you either get bonus points or a multiplier for every point you put into unarmed. You could even have it where you automatically get points to those skills when you level up and then free skill points to put wherever you want.

Diablo 2 Remake was for me the perfect example on how to Remake an old 2D pre-rendered game.
-Update the Art style, if changing to 3D, then make sure to keep it as close as possible to the original (including static camera angle).
-Do not change the design but add quality of life improvements as mentioned in the video.
-I would enrich dialogues because by today standards FO1 feel a bit "hollow" at times, with little options for you to ask follow up questions or answer as I would "like" my character to answer (at times it feels as if the player has a set personality already).
-I loved that FO1 took itself seriously and kept the 1960's vibes down to a minimum but instead had a bit more of its own identity, I would hope it did not lose this in a remake.

    Hey,
some thoughts on the points mentioned. How about removing the level cap after one did finish the game and one (in lore) becomes this mystical figure of "The Vault Dweller" while having a questseries to found Arroyo to bridge Fallout 1 and 2?
For Intelligence, one could maybe split the skill points per level also to Luck so one had a chance to get more or with bad luck even less skill points on a level up, Gambling as a perk could then up either the ups/downs or the odds of those occurring.
Maybe an inverse interaction with the Perk rate? Like the lower the Intelligence the better the Perk rate? That would offer 2 very different approaches to gain power for the character, either more skill points or more perks.

I think you hit the nail right on the head with the improvements you'd want to make. I think a big thing for me, personally, would be the inventory-system, as everything takes a reasonably large number of clicks, and most other things in the game are pretty gentle in that front. This is mostly due to the fact that I easily get pain in my hands, and I would wish games in general were a little more... conservative with the hilariously large amount of clicks required to do extremely trivial, non-engaging tasks.

Hey Tim! I was just thinking that while it's true that no level cap means you can effectively become God by maxing out every stat, I also feel this wouldn't be a problem in Fallout so much because of the timer restricting the amount of grinding you can do. Since time is a scarce resource in the game, and the game will end if you don't complete your main objectives in time, there's only so much time you can spend levelling up before you hit a natural cap anyway. Just a thought!

Where traits are concerned, there's a meta that eventually boils down to game mechanics. Which gives the most bang for the bottlecap.
Largely unavoidable but I think that the only solution is for every trait to be good enough that you seriously have to weigh it up and have them affect enough aspects of a character to contribute towards that characters design. Stealth character? Traits that affect those skill sets. Range character? Science or social character?
Specifically useful is probably better than broadly useful I guess.

I had only reached the ripe old age of 4 when Fallout came out, but I think the game pretty much holds up today, you wouldn't really need to change much at all. There's a really cool fan remake of the old Lego RTS Rock Raiders (the remakes is confusingly titled "Manic Miners") that included a remastered campaign with new features, the classic campaign with bug fixes, and the classic campaign with all the old flaws intact. Something like that for the original Fallout would be really cool.

For Scout, I could probably see reworking that so instead of decreasing the chance of a random encounter, it gives you choices on how you want to handle the encounter, whether you fight or take a detour around the encounter, or it could offer information about what’s in the encounter beforehand so you could be better informed on what to expect if you do investigate it. Basically, a perk that gives the player better information for making a decision, or otherwise allows for them to have more control over their decision-making, rather than making those decisions easier

I think perhaps what should be done for skills is make it so that for every x amount of a special you have you get extra skill points for the skills that are effected by the special stat. Also perhaps having a high enough charisma makes the player able to walk in the same grid space as a companion. An alternitive is change it so xp gain is dependant on the underlying special stat relevant to the task. So kills with melee on a strength focused character give more xp than a perception bonus character using melee.

Would like to see this. Like BG3/wasteland2-3, but Fallout. Also would have to do both, cause they're same story and I can't be only one who like to play both end to end. And I like how stories also support each other and it would be also cool to see more this kinda effects.

There is one thing i might suggest. Some way for NPCs to contact us when they have quests for us. Like a message on the pip or somehting. Cuz what happened is that on my first playthrough i went to shady sands, did all the radscorpion stuff, left, didnt go back there again for quite a while, and even when i did i just bartered, sold my items for caps etc. Then i randomly ran into the khans, and i think i a did a mission or two for them, or not, i dont remember, but anyway, i killed them all, and there i found tandi, and i realised there was supposed to be a quest for me in shady sands had i talked to aradesh.
Same thing happened with my friend when i recommended him to play fallout, he talked to aradesh again almost at the halfway point of the game to barter and sell items, but then he found out theres this quest.
One way to fix this is by messages on our pip. Another would be aradesh or someone immediately rushing to us when we enter shady sands. Or, aradesh sending someone to look for us, or a scripted random event where we run into them while aradesh had sent them to look for tandi.
Another way could be to have like a quest tracker that shows total quests in an area but might break immersion, or a marker or something that shows "people of interest". LIke there are a lot of ways to deal with this but if i was designing the remake i would go with the aradesh rushing to us or sending someone to us or to look for tandi.
PS: This might be hard to answer but how likely do you think a fallout remake actually is? one that is faithful to the original with the turn based combat.

This would be great if it happened.
The work nightdive studios has done with their remasters has been great which gives me hope for other games in the future

Honestly, I'd love to see an Arcanum remake or sequel. Nobody has really done anything like that setting since and I would love for it to get some love. I think that's what I have come to appreciate from you Tim, Leonard, Jason, etc.. are the games you make are so unique and carefully crafted. While I would love to see some OG Fallout love, Arcanum is dying for some attention. *Saw you actually have a video related to that will still post this, but will see your thoughts there. Cheers.

I think like with every big franchise nowadays it is just a matter of time until we get a Remake. Then we will be lucky if it is anything close to your ideas. I think you'll have to make some concessions to the marketing aspect of game publishing and put in "More guns, more Equipment, more quests!".

A remaster would be nice. Diablo 3/4 style graphics where it's still isometric but made in 3d would be sick. Even just that would be amazing.

I'd be down a fully remaster and clean textures of Fallout 1. It would be so cool to see the fine details you guys did on the original game

As for the infinite level cap, you're definitely right it removes all decisions with character builds if you can just get everything. And i feel it can be more impactful to replayability if you can play again to try a new play style or character build.

Hi Tim, what is your opinion on time mechanics in RPGs, such as the water chip timer in Fallout? I am currently working on a dumgeon crawler with a timer and I like how it allows me to make a lot of more risque mechanics without worrying about the players abusing them, because they take time to grind. However, most players seem to not like being rushed.

We've been building an isometric 2D game for realtime combat in a kinda fashion after RimWorld. It is a hybrid of procedural generation on a titanic world map, and hand curated maps created with an editor that runs using the same base as the game itself, allowing both devs and players to create a location and save it out for later generation in the game.
We haven't started on the dialogue system beyond some initial tests but we plan on that following a little bit of the RPG Maker model. Easy naming of variables, conditions, dialogues trees in a node system, and all the triggers and events you'd need to build a robust RPG.
You can drop anywhere on the world map you want to explore locations. It has a day/night and weather cycle.
I fully expect someone after we release thr tools will make a Fallout mod. It's almost inevitable.
Ours is set on a Fragment of an alien megastructure.
It has base building tho. Basically an RPG 4x Hybrid.

Tim what is your opinion on dialogue skill checks? New RPGs have all the checks tagged, and even worse, they show the threshold necessary to pass them, while old cRPGs didn't have dialogue tags at all. What alternative do you like more?

I think INT and CHA should provide a base level of speech, with the speech skill adding on top of that, with LUCK and reputation adding a final modifier. What you’re likely to achieve and what is required should remain hidden.

Maybe there should be an option to turn on or off skill check tags, like in Pillars of Eternity.

@@arthurvandelay. I believe it is just a setting in the options, I haven't played expert mode though, so it could be on by default in that mode.

I can’t tell you how much Fallout 1 & 2 meant to me and how incredible it was to play them.
I still have my original copies including physical game maps I made with graph paper and a journal of my experiences 😅
My friends and I all played them and it was really entertaining sharing what was going on in our games because it was so different for everyone but we all agreed these were the best games we’d ever played.
    Thank you!

Fallout has a very strong wabi-sabi element, so I love hearing what you have to say about this subject. Fallout with official extra optional features would be wonderful.

If you made this Tim I would probably give you all of my money just for a chance to demo it lol. Fallout 1&2 are both my childhood and adulthood bundled and swaddled tightly into the single best package I can think of, a remake of Fallout faithful to your and hopefully the rest of the original teams wishes would genuinely be a highlight for me.
