    Lay some cement culverts in the deepest area, scattered out for catfish and others to use. Put piles of rock/cement chunks along with boulders throughout the pond at different depths and use chunk rock down the entire slope of the dam. Add artificial and/or natural brush, trees and plants near shallow areas.

    To prevent erosion you need to run a 40' or 60' stretch of blue tarp under the water pipe down to the lowest section of the pond, tie two ropes to each end and buoy's to the other end of the ropes. When the water gets to the level of the inlet you can pull the tarp and not have any issues with erosion.
    Also, if you want to map your pond then Drone Deploy is the best app. You can use your DJI, fly the mission, and it will create a topographic layout for you. 10/10 recommend the software, and they may sponsor you if you were to use their product.

    • @Something-Somes

      All he needs to do is get some large culvert pipe and link it up all the way down to the bottom and maybe put some large holes here and there in it on the top of the piping. Kinda like a big water slide you see at water parks. He could just split the pipes too and do that.

    • @donnyroberts4248

      Rocks will do the same thing but be natural

    • @Something-Somes
      @Something-Somes Před 5 měsíci

      @@donnyroberts4248 Actually erosion will still happen that way. There will be erosion no matter what. You want to find the best way to spread out the water flow rather than focus in one place. The rocks will also sink and slide. Flair already found that out once. Its better to diffuse with fountains and diffusers to be honest but the culvert option could also double as tunneling for fish as long as it stays sunken when the pond is full. The plastic culvert is not my favorite option but many pond builders use it.
      I liked to make stone lean-tos and underpasses. Little fish caves too. That is a different topic but yeah...a cement culvert canal would be ideal but he did not go thick enough with the clay to support the weight of it. He could use unilocks or brick though...those are light enough.

  • @MyBackyardScience
    @MyBackyardScience Před 5 měsíci +24

    One critical thing to remember is to make sure that you set up your water input so that it will not erode your bank. The way you did it last time caused a lot of erosion and will wash away the good work and waste your money. Think this one through to find a good solution. Bama Bass has his water rising up from the deep part of his pond. Maybe run hose down to the deepest part with some kind of diffuser, at least until the water fills up over your south ledge. Those are my thoughts, but I'm not a pond expert (yet). Seek professional opinions regarding this. We want this to be a success for you! 🙂

    Your pond is coming along nicely Andrew. Personally with the ponds we built on my land years ago, we cut a big tree down and sunk it right in the middle of our deepest parts so the Big Flatheads and Blues would have plenty of shade and a place to ambush the other fish in the ponds. It's worked out great for many years now. Best of luck of whatever you decide.

    Gravel bottom for some walleyes and perch, then a couple pipes for catfish so they arent rooting in the muck. Also 2 to 4 grass carps to manage the plant growth in the shallows. And if you want some small fighter fish that taste good, gravel around the inflow, and add some brookies. Also don't forget to try and plant some millet and smart weed along the 3 foot up range to draw in the ducks

    Make sure to install a water fountain system somewhere in your backyard pond so that it will help to produce oxygen and control algae growth. As far as structure, I'd put a large drainage pipe on the bottom to give your catfish and Predatory fish a place to hang out and feel more comfortable. Go by any bass pro shop and check out their aquarium for ideas.

Maybe next to the boat ramp add a dirt plateau on top of the clap to plant in the sunken trees is an awesome idea. And you should do some big boulder structures as well as some medium sized rocks. The big boulders work well for your medium large bass/gills to maneuver and hide while the medium small rocks allow your small spawns to get away from predatory fish allowing them to get large enough to not be killed. Maybe a tree cabled to cinderblocks along the bottom at the 18-14ft spot, random clay pots all over the bottom so crawfish can hide in them I stead of burrows. Also provides bass a good cold water winter feed. My only thoughts on the layout of the brush and rocks is that nature is not perfectly consistent in this case. Some rocky areas and cover are good, but maybe concentrate them more in specific places to encourage fish to congregate where they prefer and you know where to look for any one species, as well as add a little bit of each everywhere to simulate nature. Every lake and pond has a "honey hole" for a specific species where they like to stay.

    If you are considering adding trout, installing a couple aerator pumps (especially around the center where the water is the deepest/coldest) wouldn’t be a bad idea

  • @duane.pearce

    I feel like some structures in the center down deep would be really needed for winter, that way everything can hide down deep

    For the deep middle part do a bunch of gravel with large rocks/boulders some of the PVC structure and try to imitate a “mudline” also I’d love to see some walleye in there as that’s the number 1 fish I catch in Michigan

  • @hunterrowan1348
    @hunterrowan1348 Před 5 měsíci +1

    I’d do PVC trees. It won’t rot away. Won’t discolor water from extra loose dirt. And works great for sight fishing in the einter

    Trees are going to introduce a lot of natural tannins which are really good for an environment. The only trade is you will have brown darker nutrient rich water

    Would definitely recommend putting a larger rock bed under/around the water inlet pipe so you don’t erode away the clay and Bentonite defeating the whole purpose of what you just did

  • @jamesonsmith8142
    @jamesonsmith8142 Před 5 měsíci +1

    You should put a tarp under the inflow to prevent erosion then Posibly put a large crib or tree on it do the fis have a spot to hide along with fresh cold water in the summer

  • @MyBackyardScience
    @MyBackyardScience Před 5 měsíci +1

    I think it will work! I hope it will work! As long as the trucks spreading the last clay layer did not disturb the bentonite too much, it should be OK! 🙂

  • @chibbeee

    In the bottom, put large rocks and some drainage tubes for catfish holes. Use more natural tree piles,but also try pvc ones. Maybe even tie 3 tunes together and place a couple throughout. Are you going to put any natural grass or lily pads?

  • @RyanMiller-ru3kd
    @RyanMiller-ru3kd Před 5 měsíci +1

    You need to put like a Jason statue at the bottom before you fill it up or just any kind of Easter egg type thing. Or you could put a treasure chest with beefcake jerky in it and make it air tight

    I used to run a directional drill rig that would bore pipe under roads and driveways, etc. and we would add bags of bentonite to the to the water that we used to drill with, it was used to seal the bore hole and not let loose material fall into the hole. The best I can remember is when it dried it was almost like a soft concrete if that makes sense. Good luck!

  • @joshallen1913
    @joshallen1913 Před 5 měsíci

    Feel like a mixture of both natural and some artificial as well as mixing stuff between shallow to deep. Some shallow bigger rocks and gravel will be good for bluegills but early spring those shallow rocks will warm up quicker allowing other stuff for the fish. Some deep big boulders in the middle with a few thick logs for some big cats or big bass to go hang around. Make options available to choose

  • @buckfeverboy
    @buckfeverboy Před 5 měsíci

    Put fish cribs in the deep area. Essentially, just some pallets screwed together to make a cube with an open top. Panfish will hold to that like crazy. We have them all over in public lakes here in WI.

    might be a bit late to make suggestions, but i would put in some decent sized boulders, and maybe some hallow logs, at the very bottom of the pond, weigh down the logs with the boulders, and just get a bunch of random misc structures going surround it with aquatic plants... idk much about ponds or anything, but the more places for fish to hide/survive/thrive the better i would imagine. at first it might be slow going, but the longer ur pond is running, and the longer u got life going in it, the more the fish/life will adapt to it.

  • @facerace6012
    @facerace6012 Před 5 měsíci

    I'd add fresh water grass and hornwort, Java Moss, or Water Wisteria (grass that produces natural oxygen) as well as some floating (very lil) plants as they (the fish and young spawn) might want some cover while in the middle of the pond. Just to feel secure and thrive. That all can go at the bottom/top water towards the middle. Also add blue natural pond dye for visibility.

  • @evanmartin292

    You should try and add a couple of muskies to the pond! Since you have the cold water source and deep water they should survive just fine! But that would be unique to the pond! Definitely being a fish of a lifetime!

    Use those old gutted cars down in the woods and pile them in the depth's for cover. I'd do a mix of artificial and natural structures. We basically cleaned our land out from a few old gutted cars, appliances, large pipes, stumps, deadfalls, etc. and used for structure in our lake. We also got old lumber and concrete from job sites and built a few structures. It's been 20 years and the pond thrived from day one.

  • @treyt7651
    @treyt7651 Před 5 měsíci

    Our favorite is to add a huge brush pile in the middle. If the spot is 14' we shoot for about a 12' brush pile. Also be sure to only add hard woods. Hedge, Locust, Walnut, Cherry, Oak. No junk trees like cottenwoods
