Hey, this is a great video. I enjoyed watching it. I agree with most of the things you say. The insane amount of rules make it incredibly hard to moderate. Back in the day, before there was NLR, before the advert everything rule, it was just chaos and fun. If you acted up you just got straight up kicked, banned, frozen or otherwise punished. No rooftop sessions.
Oh well, I'm old. Besides the occasional patch to the main code repo I don't do much with DarkRP nowadays.

I’ve never tried this mode on gmod, sandbox and TTT with friends always satisfied me for my time playing.
I never had any friends to play with :( my experience is so different from you guys i wish i had that. I lost my interest in video games because of this
Me and my friend usually played Sandbox to mess around with add-ons or Cinema to watch stuff together, I never touched DarkRP as well.

darkrp during the gmod 12 era was very fun. i miss when servers were a little more "limited" in terms of things that you could do - nowadays there are so many crazy addons that it feels like i'm not really playing the same mode, though people calling admins for literally every minor offense does much more harm than massive addon lists that necessitate a 30 minute server join time
Agreed. I miss the super simple days where the addons were as simple as guns & jobs
short story: i used to be a trial mod for some server network (iirc it was icefuse, i might be wrong) since i kinda enjoyed my time there. then again, it was in a single day, and i'd been on that server for more than 6-7 hours straight. i applied to be a mod and the process was pretty damn long, i had to go through multiple forms, get recommended by some of the admins that were online at the time, and other stuff, but then i finally became a trial mod, got through training, and was told to just keep playing on the server and doing mod stuff, and make sure to come to the weekly meetings every saturday. the issue was, i was having a sleepover with my friends on saturday. so imagine my reaction when, on saturday, i wake up, find out i missed the meeting, and thought i was going to get kicked off the mod team. so, i dipped from everything icefuse related and never returned. i still feel bad for it. especially since one of the dudes who was on the mod team was apparently in my same town.
would i go back? probably only to say sorry, and that's it.

I've heard about the average DarkRP server and through it was fun to see what's up with it. Needless to say, I can see why people love to troll on those servers after a while, it really deserves the reputation it has. It's similar to Second Life because it has a great modular gameplay and customization, and it's REALLY fun, yet the social part is... something else.

one of the two co-authors of the original darkRP here- great stuff. will watch later fully but nice to see someone go over it. (not sure if you cover it but DarkRP > LightRP > DarkRP that you know and love! all the same derived / rebooted code)

I've set up DarkRP servers before and one thing that helped to encourage roleplay is having a small ruleset that cuts out most of the bullshit. Requirements like adverts, new life rule, fearRP, kill warnings, and RP relations are left out of the rules, and with no fading doors the focus is more on roleplay interactions than base building. The few times I have to actually ban someone are usually for propblock or mass RDM, which are easy to detect without dragging someone on a roof.
I remember the one time I did play DarkRP, I got to be mayor, and the mayor was able to choose the rules of the servers outside of a couple handful that needed to be there all the time
And I just made it fun
Poor people were able to do pretty much anything they want, but if they do something someone doesn't like, you can kill them on the spot
And eventually the poor people just started throwing shit everywhere and breaking windows
I had 2 body guards who would protect me from the poor and the police, so the server became like the normal people, the police, and an army of homeless people who would come into your house and fuck your shit up, steal, and leave, but the police can only arrest the poor, they can't kill or I execute them in time square
it was fucking wild but it was also the most fun I had in darkRP and the people were having fun too not just resorting to admins for everything, admins were having a great time too.

I miss DarkRP, being in high school during 2009-2013 where I feel RP was at its peak. Same with GMod Zombie Mod. Thanks for the time travel

Y'know fellas I just wish we could get a modern age DarkRP.
This is easily the best video I have ever seen about DarkRP since most videos tend to be about how "weird and whacky" the addons and players on servers are. I appreciate how you also talked about the spinoffs of DarkRP and the history of RP in Source games in general as I hadn't even known that there were RP mods in GoldSrc games before watching this video. It truly is a one of a kind gamemode. I don't know if you have much experience in other Garry's Mod gamemodes but a video covering TTT and it's own spinoffs and games it's influenced would be an interesting one. Also considering that a lot of people watching this video may have never played DarkRP let alone GMOD and want to try it out for the first time, it would be nice to add a list of servers that are featured in this video so that people can check them out and see which server tailors to their own likings. Once again thank you so much for this video, DarkRP is easily misunderstood and I'm glad this nuanced coverage of it exists.

I’ve basically never been on a RP server in GMOD. Me and my friends usually just play Prop Hunt and TTT (and recently, Gun Game) with eachother. Aside from one tiny where we played Star Wars RP for some reason. I think we spent more time downloading addons then we did playing! Lmao

Fantastic video Kacey, hits a lot of nostalgia points. I've spent tons of restless nights as a teenager grinding money for hours and going on raids with buddies I made in the server on DarkRP.
Thanks for making this video. DarkRP is a very important game mode and it's sad to see the state it has fallen into.
I went back to Dark rp recently, it definitely is in it's late capitalism stage, most of the people where mining rocks in the sewer and every street had a giant slot machine and felt completely dead despite having 100 players.
Zuthar13 is integral for knowledge about Dark RP.
Also, Garry created Garry's Mod because JBMod was taking too long to develop

This is why I was never big on GMOD RP, I've always hated how convoluted the rules are (and how many there are) and how seriously people take it. This definitely helps me see it in a new light though, I just wish there was more options for people like me who just want to have fun above all else.

The happiest time in my life was the summer between 6th and 7th grade where I played gmod (mostly darkrp) all summer long and got fat for the first time.

The part you mentioned about intentional neutering of Police Roles was too true, I can't count how many communities have given preferential treatment to criminals over Police in many areas, Developing, Gameplay, and even Administration. Warrants being broken for 6 months making police fundamentally unable to raid was less important then implementing the 20th custom class in that week. Banning users because they "disrupt the gameplay and community" (usually always Civil Protection players, too, atleast overwhelmingly) while allowing donators who spent upwards of 2k+ because he has a personal relationship with the management and has a warn record the length of George Orwell's 1984.
DarkRP is such a cheap way to grift little kids now a days, Honestly Falco should seriously consider being able to make his gamemode un monetizable.

I have been playing HorizonNetworks for a few months now. The days I have off I usually play this server for hours. Currently I have 234M, I never spent a dime on there VIP packages. How I got there? Just grind and buy printers from people, or get luck in coinflips.
