How To Change CBR650F Coolant + Leak Fix

You'll want (at least) 3 quarts of coolant on hand. I used Pro Honda HP Coolant Type-2 (part# 08C50-C321S02) because I always try to use Honda stuff, plus also, this stuff is a wild blue color!
My thermostat cover gasket developed a leak this past winter. I take an extra step in this video to replace it (part# 19305-MGZ-J01). Doing this also drained a lot of additional coolant, so if you don't open yours up (requires an 8mm socket with an extension), you may want to at least disconnect the lower radiator hose.
You should replace your water pump drain bolt crush washer (part# 90463-ML7-000). The water pump drain bolt is opened with a 5mm hex bit. Other than that, the only tool you need for a basic coolant change is a Phillips head screwdriver for the radiator cap set screw.
As you can see, this is a relatively easy maintenance procedure, maybe just one step up from changing the oil.

if you take your exhaust off, you'll need 4 new gaskets: 18291-MN4-92

Haha, it makes me smile that some people care about this stuff! I don't think I'll ever get rid of this bike. I recently moved for a new job that's a big step up: more stress, new house, other projects, baby on the way, excuses, etc. etc. haha. I also picked up a 2008 Harley Road King that I've been riding a lot lately as well; it's fun to have two very different bikes. Thank you for watching and commenting, it seriously means a lot. :-)

thanks for the video im doing my coolant this weekend. i did notice yesterday my thermo housing is weeping coolant so im going to replace the o-ring also. did this fix the leak ?

I think you might have solved my problem. I have a 2016 identical to yours and the leak from the thermo cover has been driving me god damn crazy. Ordered a few of those rubber gaskets. Mine doesnt appear to be messed up either but I guess it is... Hope this works!

Hey man quick question, does your cbr650f run hot? I recently bought a 2nd hand 650f and I found that after even 15min of riding it the engine gets really hot when I touch it with my bare hands. Not sure if that's most bikes or something with the coolant. Thanks
It definitely gets hot to the touch, and that’s normal for all bikes. If you’re feeling a lot of heat up your legs while in motion, that would be a little more unusual. I always wear long pants while riding and that accidental burns from the engine or exhaust. I think you’re probably fine, but if you want to be extra sure I think I have a video on coolant change.

About 22k. I’ve slowed down a lot; I do most of my longer rides on a different bike these days so it’s mostly just commuting. Still love it though.
Dang its Honda 2014 has already thermostat leak?I have suzuki sv650 from 2004 and didnt have any those issue.......
I think it’s related to the cold climates I’ve lived in, and fluctuating from hot operating temperatures to far below freezing in the same day (I ride in the winter). Since it’s a super minor issue and is very easy to fix, I don’t think it’s too bad. I’m guessing your 16-year-old SV has had a few consumables replaced over its lifetime too. No bike is perfect, but the 650F, like the SV, is a great value and is extremely reliable.
@@BurntOnBothEnds I got your same bike actually I trade in my sv for a cb650f its night and day the difference I dont know how the people make comparison with inline 4 with v twin honda pull really fast
