Honestly one of my biggest issues with the Disney+ Wimpy Kid movies is that the tone is completely different. The original movies and books they were based on were a lot more grounded and cynical, while the new movies have a more sanitized aesthetic to them.
I mean Disney+ and sanitized go together like a hand in a glove. They've altered and censored movies on their service so I'm not surprised they would tone down and ruin something like this too.
I feel like the LA movies were the best in that regard, had the grounded cynical aspect but also not make greg's life seem like misery porn ( self inflicted but still). I like that they actually had greg actually join the party in RR instead of just locking him in for the night without any recourse ( atleast this movie uses the lock-in as blackmail).
I did kinda like how Rodrick sounds a lot more like a teen than the original trilogy. I much prefer Devon, but this kid genuinely sounds like a 16 year old who thinks he’s way cooler than he is, which really fits Rodrick.
Maybe if it wasn’t animated by Bardel Entertainment, the guys who did that 2022 “Ice Age” movie, maybe it would’ve had great animation perhaps animated by Triggerfish Animation Studios, who did “Adventures of Zambezia”, “Khumba”, and the 2021 Netflix movie “Seal Team”.
It’s kind of sad after how badly the long haul movie turned out for people, they felt any wimpy kids films made after has to play it completely safe just so they don’t get the same reaction as that one did .

I remember when the Dog Days film came out , there were Yoplait Go Gurt straws. Not sure if it is true or fake but 20th Century Fox wanted to make one last Wimpy Kid film for a 2013 release with the OG cast. But since the child actors of the previous films started going through puberty , they decided to cancel it instead.

Also their addition of holly hills into book 2 movie is also an amazing element mix taken from last straw. Tbh, i'd say that if these elements were not added, the movie would feel really bland. Just like these ones currently feel.

Funnily enough, when I read the original book in elementary school, I unironically misread the title as this. I remember my mother and sister dying of laughter in the car when I read the title like that.
the fact it doesn't take that long for each movie to come out tells me they're just popping these movies out due to the cheap budget and i think they should stop unless they're willing to be given a higher budget with better animation and a more cohesive story
Sadly, Jeff says he plans on adapting every single book into a movie, and if you ask me I think he's spreading himself a bit thin since he's the one doing the screenplay for the animated ones. It'd also help if he stopped writing them, because he's on book 17 now, meaning that if he continues writing the books we could be late into the 2030s and still not have them all adapted.

I agree that animation is great to tell these kinds of stories without worrying that the actors will get older, but it probably also helps that animated characters can’t go to prison for committing acts of murder and terrorism in their free time like the live action Rodney did

The only part of the movie I liked was Ed Asner had a role in this before he passed, instantly I knew it was him voicing in this movie, Ed Asner will be very missed. But still, I miss the feeling of the live action movies.
When I first heard his voice, I recognised it but I couldn't quite put my finger on who it was or where I recognised it from. I did realise later on in the movie though. RIP Ed Asner.
I feel like they should’ve just made an episodic Wimpy Kid series. If they wanted to be more faithful to the books then an episodic format would mean worrying less about giving the characters meaningful development and they could just stick closer to the book’s cynical and mean spirited tone. What i love the most about the live action wimpy kid movies are the books documenting about their production. It really shows how much love and care got put into those films, id recommend you checking them out if you haven’t already

Although this movie is around 20 minutes longer than the animated one, it feels cheaper and more incomplete. These annual animated Wimpy Kid movies feel soullessly churned out like how MCU movies are nowadays. My sister and I had more fun nitpicking the movie’s animation quality and sacrifices over watching it. They cut so much content from this movie, such as Greg signing up for the swim team during the summer, Rodrick putting Greg in the back of the van and going through speed bumps, and Greg and Rowley’s sleepover. There’s barely any fun chemistry between Rodrick and Greg, and the characters don’t really have clear motivations for the choices they make. Jeff Kinney just isn’t built for writing screenplays. I have no idea how they booked Ed Asner for this movie.

I think it’s the stupidest thing ever how they’re adapting books that were already fucking adapted. What the should really do is make a TV series, and tell original stories (or at least adapt one’s that haven’t been adapted). I think DWOK makes the most sense as an animated sitcom, I’d probably watch that.

I'm like a 70% sure I wouldn't ever look back to say the og ones weren't as good. OG ones are just way too good, they somehow managed to change stuff in the necessary areas while also managing to keep the base story right.
Honestly, as someone who babysits a lot, I think these films are the definition of Disney wanting more animated content on Disney plus, regardless of the quality. They see films from their own studios, like Encanto moana, Luca, ect, or shows aimed at younger kids like bluey, Pj masks, or Spider-Man and his amazing friends, and want to have other shows and movies put in between any show/film from them to get more kids to subscribe/watch, even if it’s for a short time. Sometimes this works, like with Bluey, or miraculous ladybug, which are both huge with kids, but other times it results in films like Roderick Rules, which feels like more content that will be forgotten in a month, rather than something with actual artistic value, at least in my opinion.
These movies would make so much more sense if they were animated in a sketchy, doodly 2D style that resembles the illustration style of the books. It just doesn’t work as CGI.
The ONLY thing that impressed me in this movie was that they animated about 40% of the drumming correctly. Most cartoons don't put in the slightest bit of effort which made me really surprised that this one did. I was also happy to hear Ed Asner's voice one last time, RIP
I cried and farted when Greg from the hit book series Diary of a Wimpy Kid, looked at Rodrick and said, "Is it Rodrick Rulin' time?" and Rodrigo looked back at him, shedding a tear whilst simply stating, "Yes, Gru from Despicable Me. It's Rodriguez Rulin' time," and Rodney Reddin' all over Surrey Street. A true moment and one of the movies of all time.

Diary of a wimpy kid is like 20th Century Fox’s/Disney’s SpongeBob/Fairly OddParents. It’s starting to become their life support and they refuse to let go. I cannot take it anymore.
This is the problem with Disney owning the movie rights to Wimpy kid, they don’t value it as a creative work of art, only as a means to boost Disney plus subscriptions. Aside from the movie we don’t talk about, Fox did a much better job with the live action trilogy than Disney has done with it.

It seems like The Long Haul’s abysmal reception really hurt these movies in the long run. Both of the animated films have been of debatable at best quality, and unlike the original trilogy which mixed and matched elements from the books along with some of its own original additions to passable effect, the animated movies have made very little attempt to do so. With the route they're going, I guarantee Greg and Holly's surprisingly well-done dynamic is gonna get the axe.
Greg and Holly will likely end up like the books where Greg is into her at first but loses interest and realizes she's not into him. While I like their dynamic in the movies I also feel like the way the books do it feels more on brand for Greg's luck

The really sad thing is that Disney Bought the rights to it meaning it will never have a 2D animation adaptation ever, 2D animation is just abandoned and it’s not respected by the big companies, so even if we do want it, it’s not necessarily what we want, it’s what they think WE want
I don’t understand the hate this movie is getting. I think the reason is just that people are mad that there’s someone else besides the og actor for Rodrick. I bet 90% of the people here either didn’t watch it at all, or they just watched the first 10 minutes and quit. It’s seriously not a bad movie at all, and Rodrick is decent.
Judging how the first two turned out, this is gonna get boring and old FAST. I just wish that they pick and choose the coolest books to adapt. even if they're gonna make the stories worse and cut out things that have stale cheap animation, I just wanna see the snowball fight from the meltdown DAMN IT
I actually loved the new Rodrick rules, it's not as good as the og film but I like it ^^ They missed out on A LOT of things like Invisible Chirag, but I hope the 3rd movie picks up the slack! Great video Mark!!

The animation of these two recent films is so icky and atrocious looking to me. I think it would've been cooler if instead of cg models, they did actual hand-drawn 2D animation overlayed on top of writing paper. But Disney is lame and hates creativity, so we got the cheaper and faster solution instead 😒

They cut so much content from this movie, such as Greg signing up for the swim team during the summer, Rodrick putting Greg in the back of the van and going through speed bumps, and Greg and Rowley’s sleepover. There’s barely any fun chemistry between Rodrick and Greg, and the characters don’t really have clear motivations for the choices they make. Jeff Kinney just isn’t built for writing screenplays. I have no idea how they booked Ed Asner for this movie.

How would you rank every book? I’d personally go (worst to best) Getaway, Double Down, Deep End, Wrecking Ball, Long Haul, Big Shot, Meltdown, Diary of a Wimpy Kid, Hard Luck, Ugly Truth, Dog Days, Old School, Third Wheel, Last Straw, Rodrick Rules, Cabin Fever.

I think it’s the stupidest thing ever how they’re adapting books that were already fucking adapted. What the should really do is make a TV series, and tell original stories (or at least adapt one’s that haven’t been adapted). I think DWOK makes the most sense as an animated sitcom, I’d probably watch that.
I agree, I really liked a lot of the changes especially with Grandpa and Greg acting more in character but it just got rushed and muddied along the way

I'm like a 70% sure I wouldn't ever look back to say the og ones weren't as good. OG ones are just way too good, they somehow managed to change stuff in the necessary areas while also managing to keep the base story right.
Honestly, as someone who babysits a lot, I think these films are the definition of Disney wanting more animated content on Disney plus, regardless of the quality. They see films from their own studios, like Encanto moana, Luca, ect, or shows aimed at younger kids like bluey, Pj masks, or Spider-Man and his amazing friends, and want to have other shows and movies put in between any show/film from them to get more kids to subscribe/watch, even if it’s for a short time. Sometimes this works, like with Bluey, or miraculous ladybug, which are both huge with kids, but other times it results in films like Roderick Rules, which feels like more content that will be forgotten in a month, rather than something with actual artistic value, at least in my opinion.
These movies would make so much more sense if they were animated in a sketchy, doodly 2D style that resembles the illustration style of the books. It just doesn’t work as CGI.

The ONLY thing that impressed me in this movie was that they animated about 40% of the drumming correctly. Most cartoons don't put in the slightest bit of effort which made me really surprised that this one did. I was also happy to hear Ed Asner's voice one last time, RIP

I cried and farted when Greg from the hit book series Diary of a Wimpy Kid, looked at Rodrick and said, "Is it Rodrick Rulin' time?" and Rodrigo looked back at him, shedding a tear whilst simply stating, "Yes, Gru from Despicable Me. It's Rodriguez Rulin' time," and Rodney Reddin' all over Surrey Street. A true moment and one of the movies of all time.

I think it’s just okay, although the only thing they really improve on is (ever so slightly) its summarization of the book
Also the point you made about the 3 act structure. That's why I loved the books. There was always a pay off but it felt like we were going through just another teens life. It made it so enjoyable for me that they focused on the humor and the reliability
P.s I think it's fair to compare adaptations when they're both trying to go off the source material quite loyally (I'd argue that even tho the live action changed a lot too) and it's better for your point to have an example of why this new animated movie was. It's harmless but redundant

The biggest issue is, like the books, the animated series can go on indefinitely so aside from some minor stuff, the status quo always has to be reset by the end. I think comparing it to the live action films is unfair as because they knew those couldn't last forever, they actually had an opportunity to have the characters grow and change and be actual people. It's apples and oranges.
Diary of a wimpy kid is like 20th Century Fox’s/Disney’s SpongeBob/Fairly OddParents. It’s starting to become their life support and they refuse to let go. I cannot take it anymore.

This is the problem with Disney owning the movie rights to Wimpy kid, they don’t value it as a creative work of art, only as a means to boost Disney plus subscriptions. Aside from the movie we don’t talk about, Fox did a much better job with the live action trilogy than Disney has done with it.

It seems like The Long Haul’s abysmal reception really hurt these movies in the long run. Both of the animated films have been of debatable at best quality, and unlike the original trilogy which mixed and matched elements from the books along with some of its own original additions to passable effect, the animated movies have made very little attempt to do so. With the route they're going, I guarantee Greg and Holly's surprisingly well-done dynamic is gonna get the axe.

Greg and Holly will likely end up like the books where Greg is into her at first but loses interest and realizes she's not into him. While I like their dynamic in the movies I also feel like the way the books do it feels more on brand for Greg's luck

The really sad thing is that Disney Bought the rights to it meaning it will never have a 2D animation adaptation ever, 2D animation is just abandoned and it’s not respected by the big companies, so even if we do want it, it’s not necessarily what we want, it’s what they think WE want

The animation of these two recent films is so icky and atrocious looking to me. I think it would've been cooler if instead of cg models, they did actual hand-drawn 2D animation overlayed on top of writing paper. But Disney is lame and hates creativity, so we got the cheaper and faster solution instead 😒
