    4:30 Actually, in the book, Greg did in fact come up with the idea for Zoo-Wee-Mama and Rowley continued drawing the comic after Greg abandoned it. The 2010 film was never the template they were following for this film, so you may need to read the book again for a proper assessment. However I do agree about how half-assed this movie feels. They cut out so many big parts from the books just to compensate for that 58 minute runtime. If they just gave this movie more time to breathe and include more plot points from the book, it could’ve been one the best and most faithful Wimpy Kid movies in a long time.

    They really made him "Wimpy." Greg was wimpy in the original book and movies because he got himself into situations he couldn't get out of, causing karma. In this he's just wimpy because he's unlucky, which isn't in my opinion a good character trait.

      Did they try to make him into Charlie Brown in this movie? Sure, Charlie Brown is prone to self sabotage...but they're drastically different characters. Charlie Brown sabotages himself because he views himself so lowly while Greg sabotages himself with his overconfidence. Trying to make Greg into Charlie Brown doesn't work for me.

    • @LeopoldLitchenstein
      @LeopoldLitchenstein Před 2 lety +22

      @@TuesdaysArt I mean, not really. Greg gets himself into trouble because of his mindset, and while Charlie Brown's entire character is his optimism in spite of how he's treated, Greg still treats Rowley pretty badly and suffers the consequences for it (arguably more than in the first movie since he gets punched by a bigger kid in this one and his mom knows about the Big Wheel game which she doesn't in the book).

    • @LeopoldLitchenstein
      @LeopoldLitchenstein Před 2 lety +9

      @@dreddick1235 He still kinda does that. The movie starts with the introduction of the Big Wheel concept which I think is handled a bit more gracefully than the original movie where it kind of comes out of nowhere and you're expected to know why it's happening, and the first thing that happens after Rowley's arm is broken is Greg seeing the cast as a positive and he tries to turn it into a good thing that can benefit them.
      I think a lot of people are gonna be upset with the new movies because while the original trilogy changed several things for the better, like Greg being more of an active character, the new ones are likely to be more true to his personality in the book they're adapting, and be closer to the books in general. Greg in the first book is really passive more often than not, and Rowley isn't just a nice kid, he's really innocent and childish, which this one captures really well. Rowley and Greg came up with Zoo-Wee-Mama together in the book so I think that them having him actually steal the idea in this movie wasn't the best decision but it's still technically kind of close (the biggest problem being that Greg should have instigated the conflict at the end like in the book rather than taking the same reasoning from the original movie). Plus, some things that Greg gets into, like wrestling and the play, he's basically forced into and doesn't want to do, while in the movie, he gets into them on his own accord. I think that while I understand being disappointed with the new movie, Mark should have AT LEAST reread the book so he could compare it to the actual source material and not the adaptation of said source material, because several things are done pretty much exactly like the book, such as the ending. Doesn't make sense to me to compare the ending of the new movie to the ending of the first movie when the book ended basically the same way as the new movie does.
      And I know that if you need to know the source material to enjoy the adaptation then it's not a good adaptation, but I also think that if you base your major complaints on how they're done in an adaptation rather than the source material for said adaptation, you're bound to come off as a bit biased (like the way the Fregley sleepover ends, the movie adds him going into his father's arms relieved, but the book plays it off as a joke with him waking up his parents at 2 AM). It's especially weird to me because he says the books were a great basis and this new one really is a lot like the book it's based on.

    For a while I’ve thought Diary of a Wimpy Kid is like a kid-friendly Always Sunny in Philadelphia, with the main character being a selfish idiot but always paying for it in the end, so I think making Greg more likeable and relatable makes this film a pretty big departure from the spirit of the original.

    I'm glad to have more Wimpy Kid movies, but I think this one's style could have been better as a TV series to give more time to flesh out the characters in a way the original movies couldn't and get to more books aside from the first 4-5ish. The whole Rowley stealing Zoo-Wee-Mama was a part of the books, but I think it worked better in the book because the movie exists. I like to view the books as how Greg views the world and the movie as how it actually is. Like Greg doesn't want to come off as a jerk so he claims he came up with it, but with the movie, you see it was actually Rowley. But with the reboot being a) a movie and b) animated, it makes it come off as both the movie and the book, so you don't get that brilliant little narrative piece.

    One of my biggest problems with the movie is how much it exaggerated everything. Remember that one drawing in the book where Rowley asks Greg if he wants to play? In the book they just at a locket near maybe one or two guys. In the movie Greg And Rowley are on the stage they have in the cafeteria for some reason and when Rowley says it literally everyone in the cafeteria turns and laughs at them and say “WHAT A LOSER”. Greg shouldn’t really be the victim of the social hierarchy cause the entire point is he’s a loser who obsessed with being popular and made up his own social hierarchy system to try and reason with why he isn’t popular.

    When I watched this movie, I definitly enjoyed it quite a bit. I wasn't looking at it with a critical eye, I wasn't looking for flaws I was simply enjoying it. But after listening to your critique, I definitly recogonize more of the problems with this. It definitly seems like a budget constraint and time-crunch was what caused to movie to come out like this. I'm hoping that the Rodrick Rules movie doesn't try to cram as much stuff from the book and movie as they can into it. I don't think this was a bad movie as all I thought it was fine even after your review, but I do wish that Rodrick Rules continues from both the amazing book and the movie. And if there is going to be such a big time-crunch and budget constraints, they shouldn't try to do more than they can with that. I can definitly see something great here and I feel like they can definitly get themselves back on their feet with Rodrick Rules, theres no reason not to.

      I think what also helps is that it feels more slice of life and closer to the book. I feel like a lot of people are going to compare this movie to the original (like Mark does) when a lot of the basis for the new one is tied more to the book than the first movie, which actually changed a lot more to fit a full on movie. The first book just has Greg trying to survive middle school and live his life, this movie does a good job sticking close to that.

      I really don't want to hear 23 year old men trying to replicate the voices they did when they were the proper age for the characters, or trying to use their current voices for these roles that'd be so awkward lmao
      Maybe they could have had cameos though, that would have been cool

      Why they? They are grown up. Why are you so attached to the movies the true source is the books.

    I also don't like how they didn't put in the part where their mom found the really weird magazine Rodrick had and rodrick's mom got mad at him and she said "is there anything you want to say to women for owning this offensive magazine?" And Rodrick said "I'm sorry women" and then rodrick's band clapped

    Fun fact none of the clips from the first teaser are even in and the thing is the clips that were better than anything that was actually in the movie

    Something also that was good about this movie was the teenagers in the red truck all talked because in the book and the 1st live action movie, there was one guy who didn’t talk at all but in this, they all talked.

    The movie was fine,but mark has a point it’s kinda disappointing and Greg is less of a jerk.

    • @icecreamhero2375
      @icecreamhero2375 Před 2 lety +9

      That's how it is in the books. The movies made Greg a bigger jerk. In the books Greg is selfish and egotistical but more of an unfortunate victim of circumstance. For example one of my favorite books in the series, Cabin Fever, Greg wanted to have his own Holiday Bazaar because the one at school is overpriced. He and Rowley put up a green poster on the school. It rains and there is a green spot on the side of the school. The school thinks it's graffiti. The cops come to the school and interrogate the kids. Greg is less selfish jerk and more straight man reacting to idiocy around him.

    As disappointing as this movie was, they’re still planning to adapt all the books in the series in animated format eventually. We’re getting Rodrick rules next year. Oh well!
