  • Taxus is a genus of coniferous trees or shrubs known as yews in the family Taxaceae. They are relatively slow-growing and can be very long-lived, and reach heights of 2.5-20 m, with trunk girth averaging 5 m.
Start pruning yews in late March or early April. This is right before new growth will start to take place. If the yews are growing vigorously, you may need to prune them again in late June till early august.
Avoid pruning yews in the fall, as this will make them more vulnerable to winter weather.
    cutting back large yews?:
You can prune healthy yews (Taxus spp.) back quite severely with no problem. You can easily reduce their size by one-half to three-quarters.

Hi Mark. Great tutorial. It can be intimidating to prune big shrubs. I have a huge Japanese yew in the front of my house I have to tackle yearly or else it’ll get too large. TY.

Question about the lantana and amaryllis in the pot… do you have to move them indoors during winter or are they fine left outside in the planter?
Thank you for the instructional video on pruning the yew. Mine are severely overgrown and really need to be cut back but I’ll wait until spring since it’s almost September.

Thanks for sharing this informational video. I have two yews that I am having a hard time controlling and need to do a somewhat hard pruning next spring. They produce some red fruits which I think these could be hicks yews. They were planted before I purchased the house and now are overgrown for its space but the height is not the problem, is the width. Do you think they will bounce back in a timely matter if I prune them from 4 feet wide to 3 feet next spring?

@@topgardener91 just wondering, why cut the top? These are only around 40 inches tall.

How do I keep the deer from eating my yews in front of my house under my large window? I live in Michigan. Do I use the deer spray in the winter? That's when they eat them. Thanks for your expertise.

Wrap them in deer netting for the winter. It's a black plastic mesh that isn't visible from a distance.

Can I prune boxwood and Plum Yew Spreading now? End of November zone 6?

I live in zone 7b. As a general rule to avoid winter damage, best time to prune evergreens is late Winter to early Spring. I just avoid doing it in heat of summer or Fall. Otherwise they can be pruned anytime.
