More specifically, they're a type of yokai (demon/spectre) based on a paper lantern. You can also see an umbrella yokai for a second earlier in the video. That whole world is based on spooky stuff, and Nintendo being a Japanese company incorporated some of their home country's mythology that is considered creepy.
I was cool that they incorporated old Japanese buildings in a Mario stage. That hardly ever happens in Mario games before Mario Odyssey came out.

This is definitely the most original and inventive 2D Mario game. You got 6 brand new themes, something I wish Nintendo would do more today **cough** NSMB, a brand new boss, and a more open world style hub and gameplay. My only problems with this game are that it's a bit too short and too easy imo, but that doesn't stop it from being one of the best to this day. Not to mention it has aged pretty well, especially when played with the DX hack adding color!
7:55 Fun fact - this level is not intended to be made with Lego bricks! If you go underneath the stairs at 8:02 and go all the way to the right, you can see the letters “N&B” on the side of one of the bricks. These letters are a reference to N&B Blocks (basically rip-off Legos) which Nintendo sold in direct competition with Lego while they were still a toy company! :)

Those 2 coins can be skipped:
1. Go to Pumpkin Zone 1 after completing it.
2. Go down the pipe. Once you start going down the pipe, press start and then select to exit the level.
3. Go to Macro Zone 1 and hug the left side of the screen.
I don't know if power ups matter, but I did it as small Mario.

The bosses are god awful though. You can just hover over them with a carrot after you hit them the first time to combo them each and every time.

Just a little Nintendo trivia: The blocks in the final stage of Mario Zone aren't Legos, they're N&B Blocks! Nintendo used to produce a rival to Lego back in the 1960s (maybe 70s?) in Japan, called N&B, and if you look at some parts of the level you'll see the N&B logo on the blocks.

Sadly, the pipe glitch is a bad choice, because you can't get to $A2D5 without collecting a single coin that easily (if it's possible at all). But with the game end glitch, it's possible to beat the game coinless, but it's so hard that no human up until this point actually performed this glitch. But it's theoretically possible.

Wario's Castle is my favorite level out of any Mario game. Took me so long to do it back in the day.

Wait Wario steals coins quite often yet there's no coins in his castle with soooooooo many coins you would expect for there to be at least a few here and there in his castle maybe he spent all of them on his castle. Those traps that try to kill Mario are pretty effective I must admit.
This game is different in that you use coins in a store. I guess they didn't think you'd want to go back to the store after getting to the final level.

I noticed the lack of coins became a more standard thing in boss stages with later Mario games.
Why would Wario leave his coins scattered around his castle. Obviously they're all in a vault somewhere so he can dive into them Scrooge McDuck style. :)
Here's an idea for a video, one that goes against your deepest held habits: instead of going for the lowest score possible, why not see how high you can get it in New Super Mario Bros (for the Nintento DS)? Scores used to MEAN something, now's your chance to make it happen again.
A couple ground rules, to make it interesting:
Killing the same enemy more than once doesn't count- no farming up 99999999 points off of some Goomba in 1-1 that you repeatedly respawn, or stomping a Dry Bones repeatedly. If a pipe infinitely spawns enemies, you only get the points off of one of those enemies. And just to clarify, any other tricks or whatever that grant infinite points? Banned. No cheese here.
It's probably be best to track your points outside of the game, like Ceave Gaming did in the Lowest Possible Score in Luigi U videos. Route to your heart's content, but no repeating a level for extra points.
