- Can we beat the very first handheld Super Mario game without collecting nor touching a single coin? It's a challenge that I love to do with many Mario games so let's find out if it's possible in this one. This game contains only 12 levels, but it has no warp zones nor ways to skip the levels, so we'll have to play them all one after another. After watching, you'll know the answer to this question : Is it possible to beat Super Mario Land without touching a single coin?

About the final level, there's a glitch that allows you to go from the left of the screen to the right by getting "crushed" by the level's geometry, see it like in the original Mario Bros. where you could do the same thing. I don't know how it works, nor do I say it seems easy to do, but there's that.
That one part at world 4-1 got me laughing at 10:17 lol 😂

One thing is that if you hold left whilst getting cut off to the left side of the screen, you will end up on the other side. The coins in 4-3 can be dodged with this technique.

Look up “Some Guy Plays Super Mario Land - Coinless” because as it turns out this game is actually possible completely coinless.
Yes, it is. If and only if you're playing v1.0, whereby you can glitch your way out of the mandatory coin collection in level 4-3. If you're playing v 1.1, you're not finishing this game coinless.

This was very nostalgic for me as I owned this game back in the day and was sufficiently good at it to beat it twice consecutively reaching the level jump feature
I wouldn't want to try and do it with minimum coins though!

Fun fact: you don't need to collect any coin in the first half of the game. In the second half there is no level where you can make it without collecting a coin.

When I was young I played this game so often, but I failed every day. Suddenly I came to the spider world but then I lost. I was very sad about this.

The one where you had to position the enemy so you can walk off and jump off the enemy and then reach the ledge, the one after that might be possible if you time the enemy with the moving platform. The one you were talking about earlier could be possible as well but IDK, so I think 19 or 20 is the total

Ooh, Super Mario Land coinless now? I did that (and even uploaded videos of doing it) about 9 months ago, so I can immediately say that YES, you can beat SML without touching a single coin! However, certain coins in world 3 are extremely tricky to avoid, and there's a spot in world 4-3 which requires a version-specific glitch to get past.
(1:52) It is possible to slip past those coins while big (I did so in my video playthrough), but yeah, it's much easier to run under them while small.
(4:10) Nice! I believe I did it with a running jump from the previous step, carefully aimed such that I didn't bonk my head on the ? blocks above.
(4:59) False. You _can_ successfully jump above them, which is what I did in my playthrough. If you're big Mario, and you jump while ducking, you go 5 tiles high, and it's possible to barely clear those coins that way. It's also possible to time it so that you bounce off the fishbone enemy while doing a running jump from further to the left, and clear the coins that way.
(5:14, 5:36) Wow, nice. I figured it was possible to go under those, but I found it easier to go above them.
(6:38) This part was a true stumper for me at first, but I found a way to get past these coins, which I showed at the end of my final episode.
(7:02) Making use of that jumping winged statue enemy is exactly how I cleared those coins, and it fortunately works on all three such formations in the level, because that enemy is present in the same way each time!
(7:13) I guess I should link you to the video where I show that I cleared those coins. I'll make a separate comment containing the video link as a reply to this comment.
(7:45) Oh, that's clever! Too bad it doesn't work for the first such coin formation in the level. However, the method I used _does_ work for all three of them.
(8:16, 8:38) These coins in 3-2 were the hardest for me to figure out how to dodge. It requires getting up to the top path early in the level (via a hidden block above the first quartet of ? blocks), and making like pixel-perfect frame-perfect jumps to stay up there.
(9:20) This platform jump is indeed possible without touching a coin, but it took me several dozen tries to do so (thank god I was on an emulator and using savestates).
(9:35) LOL. I did show off which pipes you didn't want to enter during the game, as well as which pipes were safe to enter.
(10:21) "Le epic troll coin wall LOL" can be cleared with a ducking jump as big Mario to jump 5 tiles high from the platform while it's at its highest, which is just enough to clear the block wall above. (Be careful not to hit the hidden 1-up block just above that coin wall, and be careful of the square of coins just on the other side of that wall.)
(11:50) NOOOOO!!!!! ...Except, you _CAN_ avoid those with a glitch on version 1.0! Hold left as a wall pushes you off the left edge of the screen, and you won't die, and will instead eventually reappear on the right. You can use this to completely skip that coin room! You'll then be "out of bounds", but if you perform the glitch again, you should be able to get back "in bounds".
(12:28) You can skip all these coins with that same glitch too!

Episode 3 shows me eventually succeeding at the pixel-perfect jump at the start of 3-3, and episode 4 shows how I got past the seemingly unavoidable coins in 3-1, 3-2, and 4-3.

Super Mario Land has a surprisingly great soundtrack for a Game Boy game. Every track is memorable and catchy, and I think it’s better than the soundtracks of the other 8-bit Mario games, even Mario 3.

There's a bug in one of the versions of the game where you can screenwrap in the plane to the right side of the screen. Maybe try again to skip the huge box at the end to see the actual number?

On the topic of 4-3... Are you aware of the screen wrap glitch? On that level specifically you can get pushed off the left side of the screen by a wall and end up on the right side of the screen, which would allow you to skip all those coins in 4-3.
At 11:50, you can perform a glitch where you are on top of the entire coin room thing.
At 3-1, there actually is a moving platform. With some luck and the jumping enemy you might dodge the 3rd pattern as well.

The second forced coin could be dodged with insane timing. It looks possible using the same method as the last coin but it looks insanely hard because the platform at the bottom is moving.

The coin wall in 4-1 should be possible with the most extreme, pixel-perfect walk as small Mario. Hope that makes the challenge a bit better for you!
