    Hard to believe a doctor was talking about the live bacteria mattering in a baked/cooked food like dosa. I don't think it takes a genius to figure out that one. If bacteria could survive being heated to that degree many more people would be sick- it's practically half the reason humans heat food ffs.

      @@hvphvp9138it's basic food safety. For example, the process of pasteurization is based off the fact that bacteria die off when exposed to a certain temperature (72C for milk). Cooking is usually done at a much higher temperature. Rule of thumb is you get food to over 74C and the bacteria is killed. Live cultures are bacteria.

Yes there's always a lot of context to every statement. No one has the time to explain the whole nuance behind every statement in a short video. 1. The pressure to make content is a real problem among content creators.
    2. There is no need to have an opinion on everything, especially if it is not in our area of expertise. I can spend 6 months reading about neuroscience and if I start challenging a neuroscientist, I'd be ashamed of myself.
    3. Partisanship is a problem across the board.If something is perceived to be anti Kerala or pro Hindu habits (in context which this video completely misses), the creator takes it personally. This video was uploaded 3 weeks ago, Dr. Pal uploaded a clarification video 1 month ago. But the pressure of content and the partisanship forced this video

      I had a heart attack in the Thiruvananthapuram Med Coll hospital in 1998 . As I had unstable angina i was sent to a teaching hospital in Chennai. An angiogram found multiple blocks and by pass surgery was recommended. I was assured that with drugs I could live for 5 years but a bypass would guarantee me 10 years. I refused surgery and did not take drugs.I followed, to a large extent the Ornish method .I began to study food, health, environment in all their linkages
      and concentrated on learning Ayurveda and various herbs; initially from books and later the net. The great advantage of the net is that you get access to a lot of articles many of them of great value published in research journals.
      I found the value of foods, herbs, spices and supplements in ensuring good health. It is both complex and complicated but not difficult i have helped reverse or control non communicable metabolic diseases in scores of people.The number of doctors who have given up surgery to treat people holistically is increasing. It is sad that on such issues as this there are bold but ill-informed comments.

    You are stuck with only one principle which is "calorie in and calorie out", but there are many other factors to consider. Like eating Maggie everyday, u can control ur calories but ur sodium intake will go off the roof. Other thing is to consider that these food lack fibre and make u feel hungry more often. • @MrAnshulji
      @MrAnshulji Před 4 měsíci +2

      very well said. Sugar, HFCS, and the likes are highly addictive foods, so if you spread the true fact that "a moderate quantity won't be harmful", people will not remember the "moderate quantity bit" and instead start having a "moderate quantity" of sugar every day, then twice every day, then with every meal. Because it is so addictive and easily available. When sugar has been demonized, people are still giving into the cravings atleast once in a week. If its not demonised, then people will start having it so regularly that it will far exceed the safe limit.
      So its just better to literally "run away" from a food group like this. No fear-mongering here, its genuinely good advise. It is recommended not to cross railway tracks or highways, even though the chances of accidents are far lesser than warned. Would you call this recommendation by the authorities as fear-mongering?

    I think pranav is taking said things to extreme and then attacking the said things, it's the subtle twisting of things that is bothering me. Not everything needs to be explicitly said. Everyone knows sugar is not bad for us what Dr Pal meant there is that as this things have high sugar content its very easy to always have a surplus of meat. Again about the red meat, Dr. Pal aside from cancer also talks about its effects on heart health. He has always mentioned repeatedly that eating it daily is not good and having it in moderate amount won't make a difference.

    but Pranav at 9:41 you've mentioned that all the ingredients mentioned on the label are legally regulated, but the problem is many times brands will lie about their content. You can also see the liverdoc whey protein reports where he has shown how multiple brands had different things mentioned on the package but their actual content was lower and some were even found to be having more than permissible levels of heavy metals. wouldn't it be better to avoid these things all togather?

  • @Skrullx273
    @Skrullx273 Před 7 měsíci +22

    Also, Pranav’s view about nutrition is just calories in and calories out which is not wrong but there are more aspects to food than just calories in and calories out. Pranav doesn’t understand that such highly processed foods have no other nutritional values in them, they are just empty calories.
    Let’s compare oreo biscuits with skimmed milk. One glass of skimmed milk will give you 8.8g of protein and just 80-90 calories with no additives. You eat 2 oreo biscuits and you have already consumed 100 calories with almost no good nutritional value.
    I have repeated this several times, the source of food and the nutritional values are much more important than just calorific value. Idk where Pranav got this info of just calories in and calories out mattering lmao.

    Okay so couple of things i can add are:
    Firstly, high fructose corn syrup is very normal thing to add as a sweetner. The thing is fructose is 1.5 times sweeter then glucose and result in roughly same energy production( because when glucose is metabolised it is converted in fructose and then the breakdown continues). So, if we can add something 1.5 times sweeter without causing any health risk or increasing the cost, we should. That's the whole basis of HFCS, also corn syrup's main constituents are glucose and fructose, high fructose refers to increased concenteration of fructose in corn syrup compared to normal.
    Second, idli and dosa are not categorized under probiotics normally but they still are fermented food which are very benificial for health because when the batter is let to rest for fermentation to occur alot of fermenting bacteria produces byproducts which are very useful to us. But live bacteria concentration after cooking is very low to call these foods probiotics.

    One thing that I have noticed which is a point of distress for me, is that a lot of the health influencers will say things, but then no one will say "ask your doctor about such and such topic". Especially when some of them themselves are medical practitioners, why would you not encourage ppl to engage with their providers and give advice on what questions to ask about things like foods, drugs, lifestyle habits, etc? Inevitably when there is a medical need, it is those doctors who will give you care, not anyone on social media, so we should be encouraged to engage with them on these topics we see online. Instead these influencers seem focused on filling our heads with stuff but not rly thinking about how to improve our approach to health. One reason why I have started to like Med Life Crisis channel, he always encourages ppl to talk to the doctors and also advises on what to ask, and how to make that conversation productive for us.

    Pranav, I appreciate your critical thinking and analysis skills. But personally I feel in some cases fear mongering is needed. I have seen people who really don't understand much about calories, micronutrients and macronutrients, they normally eat whatever they like. That is absolutely okay, but its not okay when they over eat them. And the problem lies there. So common people just think from two perspective either the food is good or bad. Now a days, its becoming very common to have processed and junk food in high quantity, in that process, they are having less micronutrients, more carbs and gaining weight.

    The problem with health and nutrition is that unlike other fields of science, the studies available for a particular thing can be completely contradictory. The health organisations are always debating among themselves regarding a lot of categories like red meat, saturated fat etc. you’ll find qualified medical professionals having completely opposite views, there’s this doctor Paul Saladino who promotes a meat and fruits only diet and antagonises veggies as some poison, there are vegan doctors as well that completely antagonise meat. All of them back their claims with studies because guess what we have studies for literally everything with results completely contradictory.
    Every individual is different and the way nutrition affects their health may also differ. The best way to find what is working well for you is by getting your blood work done every 3-4 months and finding out how your diet is affecting your body, that’s exactly what I am doing.

Pranav can't fathom how addictive Maggie is once you hear worlds like ' oh you can still lose weight and have Maggie' . The moment you hear that at the start of your journey or when you are procrastinating whether this journey is even worth it, you can break your healthy routine and indulge in such foods more and more. Maggie comment isn't as problematic as it's not a very healthy food to begin with. You shouldn't use calory count to justify eating highly processed food.

    Guys head over to the channel of Dr Layne Norton who tries his level best to remain unbiased and give you information based on studies about nutrition etc. Fasting has been effective in reducing body weight for many because for many its easier to stick to calorie deficit diet in a fasting schedule and more compliance. When it comes to diet the most important thing is compliance. While intermittent fasting may not be magical, study subjects did reduce their belly fat bit more than the group in calorie deficit without IF. While the amount of weight lost was equal when calories were matched between the groups. And you shouldn't only care about calories in and calories out. You should also care about your saturated fat intake which is unfortunately in high amount in red meat. There is multiple studies on this and the meta analysis always shows the increased risks of high fat diet. Try to eat whole foods as much as possible.

  • @happysinghrocks
    @happysinghrocks Před 6 měsíci +1

    Hi Pranav, I'm a long-time subscriber and a recent member of your channel. I found this video somewhat disappointing as it continues the trend of some of the disturbing things I've started to spot in your videos even though I love them. Please hear out my reasons and hope you reply to these:
    1. You shouldn't be surprised that you were targeted based on your lack of credibility in this field. Any neutral person would be more inclined towards believing Dr. Pal over you simply because of his qualification, since we have the general tendency to believe experts over non-experts. You say that you have talked to experts who disagree with people like Dr. Pal, but why should a neutral person trust your experts over him? Have you provided any reason why the nutritionists and health experts you talk to or the sources you refer to are better or more reliable? You should keep reminding your audience that a speaker's arguments matter more than the speaker in order for the audience to distance themselves from this 'appeal to authority' bias.
    2. You keep mentioning (in most of your videos) that the person you talk about should present evidence of the content. But you should also recognize that they're talking on a video platform which is not where solid evidence is to be expected in the first place, especially if they're CZcams shorts. In the absence of such evidence, it is better to look at the said person's scholarly profile (or some source of actual evidence if they point to it) rather than dismissing their claim simply because they did not include this evidence. You as a science educator should know this of all people. I say so because even you do not (and in many cases cannot) include evidence for your claims or counterclaims simply because you present your work on YT, not in an academic journal or a reputed website. I say this as a PhD student myself who knows all the hard work needed to properly review and submit papers in peer-reviewed journals.
    3. Your understanding of "calorific deficit" and related things about fitness seems to be incomplete and often comes across as ignorant. From the law of conservation of energy, it follows that you will lose weight only during a calorific deficit, but that deficit is internal to the body. It is very difficult to measure it, though people can estimate it to a reasonable degree using a smartwatch and tracking their calorie intake from all ingested foods (which is a difficult task in itself). You seem to end all discussion by just saying the body needs a calorific deficit, which is highly un-nuanced. Your solution implies only looking at calorie intake and expense from exercise/physical movement, without considering factors like different base metabolic rates, genetics, disease, lifestyle, demographics, satiety index, micronutrients, etc.
    4. As a general observation in your videos of late, I've seen that since you start with an attitude of disproving and finding fallacies in the videos you react to, you seem to spot those fallacies more liberally (implying a confirmation bias of sorts), without attributing a proper benefit of doubt in many cases and jumping to conclusions too soon. In many cases, you miss out on the possible context in which the target video was presented. For your audience, providing that context would greatly help better judge the speaker's and your arguments.
    5. I recommend you dedicate some time and resources on improving your communication skills, especially rhetoric. If you want to influence or sway more people with your arguments (which you definitely should), you should calmly talk in a more emphatic and caring manner. While I appreciate that you've grown much more mature over the years, sometimes your reactions still come across as more vindictive, passionate, and immature than you intend to. In this regard, you should definitely learn from Vimoh who has grown the capability to better understand context, clearly identify the claim and the assumptions, follow a clear logical thread, and make inferences without offending the identity or core beliefs of the target.
    I hope you take this tirade constructively.

      @lukadoncic9355 Correct, I wonder why doesn’t Pranav say that LiverDoc’s tweets are fearmongering when he writes stuff against sugar but Dr Pal is fearmongering when he says similar things about sugar..

      Agreed, these food-related videos of his are a tad bit disappointing.

    I watch Dr. Pal but there are quite a few red flags that I noticed in his content but I let it pass by. But after watching this video and the previous one, now I think I should be more careful. Ofc I'm not gonna stop watching Dr. Pal but you one has to learn how to detect misinformation

    Pranav is giving suggestions to experienced doctor who deals patients daily😅. Bro did research in foreign CZcams reaserch center. And telling dr pal certified or not. Bro stopped believing indians always picking from western. Something comes from western always right? That you wanted to teach? Doctor job is far more superior than yours. Targeting on popular content to become popular is your goal. He is certified doctor there is no term called certified youtuber
