In this video I talk about 10 beginner calisthenics tips I wish someone would've told me when I first started. Some of the concepts I talk about are progressive overload, relative strength, grip strength, flexibility, mobility, myofascial release and more!
As a beginner to calisthenics, it's easy to get overwhelmed with all the information out there and exciting skills to pursue, so simple concepts like this are often overlooked. I also see a lot of people chasing "gains" and eating frequently in a caloric surplus, which - in my experience - will only work against you if done too often.
I hope the tips I give in this video are helpful to you in your journey. Let me know if you want more details on any of the topics I covered!

Hi I am 69 years old. I had a heart attack 1 year ago. I was a fairly decent cyclist for my age. The heart was a shock for me. I had it while out cycling. After a year of many trips to various specialist and many medications. I am sad about my diminished physical condition. Time to fight back. Calisthenics seems to me to be a good path. It works for the time of Covid, I can do it in my garage. Thanks for your instruction. Seems perfect.
Hi Mark. I'm 59 years old, and also a cyclist. I haven't had heart issues, but I've sometimes wondered about the possibility of a heart attack like you described. I did, however, have a freak accident on my bike four months back and broke my clavicle, which made me reconsider my overall health and exercise routine. I too am just started on my calisthenics journey. As a cyclist I overdeveloped some muscles (quads) and left many other muscles weak and neglected (especially my core). I'm hoping that calisthenics will balance out my whole musculature, improve balance, etc... I know I'll have to dial back my cycling to make room for the calisthenics training, but I think I'm good with that.
Thank you very much Minus The Gym! You have made it all clear for a beginner like me. Keep going, I'll watch all your videos and follow your advice.
Cheers!
Loved it! Thank you! I just got started on calisthenics and I'm couldn't find good advices for begginers. I'm 26, and I'm impressed with myself because of the weakness and inflexibility that I have. I also thank you for this video, because I found it very help and trustful. The amount of videos with those guys super shredded is incredible. I'm not trying to take out their credit, but they belong to a fitness industry already and I was looking for someone neutral like you. I'm aiming for a full body control and health, and I hope that someday I can help someone like you did with me.
PS: I'm from Brazil. I apologize if my english isn't in its best shape. I'm also trying not to use a translator at all because I'm trying to learn how to speak english too. Thanks!!
This video is perfect timing for my plans. These tips are most helpful for a more balanced approach. Thank you.
Thanks for making these videos. I am looking to get started in calisthenics and these beginner lessons are great.
I got a cold/flu and I really like to listen/watch to your videos while lying down...feeling at least a little bit productive!
Thanks for this great video!
You’re my new trainer, thanks

Tell me something Johnny Sins has not done yet XD
Thanks a lot. You have a very good & calm way to explain everything.
Very good advice. Thanks for sharing your experience and being transparent.
Always great information! Thanks man
Your videos really help me alot. Thank you for making a very informative video. Cheers.
Great info!! Thanks👍🏽
Great tips! I wish I had learned these earlier in my journey instead of discovering them the hard way.
I train fasted also and it just feels so much better. Especially Yoga and any inverted calisthenics like handstands or skin the cat.
Great stuff ! Simple , logical and applicable .
Greetings! Awesome! Thank you very much. I learned a lot. I will watch more often. I'm training to get better at Yoga. More videos please.
Awsome video man thank you your tutorial videos are great and very helpful
Great video! Solid advice! I have just developed an impingement in the last few weeks and it has made it so that I can barely do a push-up ..would really like to see a video on how are you cured your impingement..
Great videos man.always stay honest and true like now and you will get far people always can sence it. Keep the good work
Super relatable as a newbie I see you have not forgotten what it's like. and the rookie mistakes
New subscriber here. Finally someone that steps through some basics in a simple way not pretending to be an expert. Love your videos and thanks for the tips. Looking forward to more content as I progress in my calisthenics journey.
This is gold. Thank you.
Thank you for another awesome video! It would be cool to see a vid on shoulder health and hear more about how you rehabilitated yours. I’m having the exact same issue with one of my shoulders.
Great point, I am having some pain in my shoulder as well and would be very appreciative of a shoulder video as well.
Such an insightful video, thank you 🙏
Good stuff Ryan! Glad I applied this to my 14 week 80 pound weight loss. Cheers🍻
Your page is fantastic thanks for all the good info
Relative strength! Fantastic insight there. I don’t weigh much, so it’ll be neat to progress into handling more weight in workouts, translating that back to body weight activities.
Your videos are awesome! Thank you!!
Very enlightening! Thanks
your tips are so useful man, thank you.
Your videos are awesome, you deserve so much more recognition!
Gustav Dyrssen thanks :)
Thank you so, so much for sharing your experience with #6. I'm suffering from the exact same issue (inability to do pike pushups or L-sit due to inflexibility, probably to do with my height), and am frustrated that none of the stretching I'm doing is working. If I could trouble you with a request, I would really like to see you describe the stretching routine you used to overcome this.
really helpful vid, thanx man
Very down to earth stuff! Great, man, thanks :-)
Nice content. A video about your shoulder impingement would be great, the exercises you were doing and the timeline it took for it to get better.
Deadhangs regularly throughout the day worked wonders for me. A shoulder surgeon wrote a book about it.
I’ve watches a few of your videos now, and I just had to subscribe. It’s clear, comprehensive and motivating. I’m already lean and somewhat in shape, and I’m looking in calisthenics to improve general strength, build muscle and why not throw in a couple of moves someday !..
I don’t know if you’ve touched that subject already - I’ll be looking later.. - but could you do a video on diet ?! I really don’t know what to eat, when to eat, to fuel my muscles correctly...
Utilisateurpasvalide for sure, I'll be making more videos about nutrition. And thanks for the sub!
Excellent. Good stuff.
How often do you train? What's your routine? Thanks for the tips! Great video
Thank you man🙏 worthy as a beginner
Very well said. learned a lot
Thanks for the tips! I am doing your beginner calisthenics workout at home.
Sound experienced advice....thank you
Please make a stretching video. Also shoulder strengthening! :) thanks!!!! Love the vids! Keep em coming!
Ryan Santos thanks! :) . And yes, flexibility and shoulder rehab are two popular requests now. I'll be making those soon!
Thanks a lot this really benefit !
Amigo.. con menos de la mitad de lo q Usted dice aqui, hay gente que han hecho libros enteros!! Usefull and escencial info!!!

Rspect bro !
Thank you a lot!
Top notch! Thank you
Great! Thanks a lot!
Great video man
Dude, you are great.
very helpful, thanks.
Thanks for the great video
Beginner Grip strength workout would be great!
Tip 7, very interesting about working out on an empty stomach. I always used to go running early in the mornings because as a type 1 diabetic it saved me the carbs/insulin dose which can get very hard to get when doing exercise straight after. And I always felt great doing it! Then I got into resistance training and learned more about nutrition and started eating before exercise. But now that you say it, I think I felt better with no food before training. Might go back to that then :)
Always exercise while fasting. Weight training while fasted will create muscle mass. Fasting triggers HGH (human growth hormone) which is responsible for muscle growth. So ectomorphs also should exercise while fasted.
Thank you Ryan.
Very helpful! Could you do a video about joint prep for beginner trainees?
Oh, I just found one adressing this topic
Best Tips!! Tip No 10 is the ultimate fact 🙌💪💪💪💪💪
I swear you are the best calisthenics content creator
THANKS FOR INFO
Hi your channel name is 👍 !
At your tip about pain, You mentioned about some popping sounds. May I know more about that? I just started exercise and get a lot of that on my shoulders and hips joint
Great video. If you could do videos on the frog stand that would be really good. Keep up the cool work.
George Blake I actually do have a video no frog stand already :) Here's the link czcams.com/video/H2S91-UtFeY/video.html That's the tutorial, and it's part of a playlist where I teach how to progress frog stand to headstand and handstand. Hope that helps!
You can also use a lacrosse ball for Myofascial release
I am just starting out Im 44 years old - Medical issue I need to get back in shape and want to build true muscle . checking a few videos out ran across yours. and you have the basics im looking for Thank you I will be watching your tube and asking question if need be
Great advice
@minusthegym so to tip #3 one of the cheapest tips I have for folks to improve their grip strength without changing their existing equipment is to purchase a swimming pool "noodle" take a razor blade and slit one side down the middle so it can be opened up.
Wrap it around the bar and fix it in place with some athletic tape or electrical tape or a couple zip ties.
This will give any standard barbell, dumbbell, pull-up bar, etc. a thick grip that makes your grip work like crazy.
Nice thing is these things cost like $2 and are so long that they can be cut up into pieces and cover multiple bars.
wb5mgr that's brilliant! I've noticed thicker bars are much more challenging and that's a really creative way to make the bar thicker. Thanks for sharing. I"m going to try it :)
Minus The Gym another good way that I did not mention for smaller items like a dumbbell is to use a bicycle or motorcycle hand grip. That will help you build up to the noodle in small increments. As you want it to get a little larger you can wrap the bar with hockey tape and then put the bike grip over it. That way you can grow it slow. Sometimes the noodle is too thick for folks to make the large jump from a 1" bar straight to that late of a grip.
Hey great videos, can you made a video about flexibility, mobility and stretching, thank you
Byron Vera thanks! and yeah, the flexibility/mobility is coming up in a couple weeks. It's in high-demand now lol
Minus The Gym thank you
@@MinusTheGym unless im missing something you still haven't put out the video :(
@@MinusTheGym The hand-held massager link is not working. Can you post the name of the exact massager? TIA
@@MinusTheGym Hi! This is a great video. I'm just seeing now. Hopefully, you have already made the flexibility video. Yes. It is in demand. I will look for it. Thank you so much for all your videos. I've been learning so much from them.
PE class in middle and high school poisoned me to this kind of body weight mastery. I just retired at 65 after 14 years of disability leave. Yoga got me back on my feet and I have been able to put down the cane. 41 years after an auto collision that broke 11 of my ribs and gave me a near death experience, I am working toward increasing my physical mobility through Yoga. I see that I can incorporate your lessons into my practice. Thank you.
Great video
Great great great video. Tyty
Thanks!
Great video! but I want the frogstand to handstand tutorial!
And I want.
Sergio Scimone and paczProdakszyn it's coming up soon!
@@paczprodakszyn2839 do you master the handstand now the comment is1year ago
.
Gotta learn how to lever and master handstand
I boxed and did a lot of pushups but I can’t even kick up to a handstand
But i can hold a headstand from frogstand for 30 seconds I just can’t push-up my self all the way to the top...
I can’t lock my elbows out and get my elbows past 90 degrees
I’m still in pretty good shape too so I hope I can get a handstand down soon I hope it doesn’t take me more than 1 month
But hey I’ll keep at it as long as I need to we all start somewhere
Did you do a video on your impingement and excercises you did to work through it, I think I might have same issue. Also great video!
john wilson Thanks, and I sure did :) czcams.com/video/OQneJR9gImI/video.html
Ah yes the impingement. Had the same thing as you, neglected stretching my chest and giving my back the same attention I gave the front. Its kinda nuts how much stretching can help alleviate the pain, recover posture and get you back on track. Went from not doing pull ups for years cause I was scared of hurting my shoulder to 3 sets of 7 on my back days and I feel great again. Hopefully I can get back to the good ol 3 sets of 20.
I am so glad I found your channel! i'm trying to improve in calisthenics, and I am such a nooby
Get your volume in to strengthen the tendons and prevent disabling injuries
Ohhhh Jonny u help me to start
Hi, how long have you been doing Calisthenics, you're really good!
Rock climbers although toothpicks have insane strength to body weight ratios. Indoors rock climbing is a great workout and really works your hand strength. Even if you're just bouldering that alone will really work your core and grip strength
Can you make a video on shoulder impingement, i have that too
Man you are the best. Dot
Looking goòoòod 😍
Question about tip 4; Should i change hand placement per workout or also during workout so per set?
Great video!! Downloaded!💪
Can you do a video of some movements to treat the impingement?
Awesome.
Can you tell us more about the impingement? The exact same thing happened to me and Im trying to work through it.
You looks like mezomorf. Thx for videos!
Video about healthy way of exercising would be great.
Changing the way you walk is the first thing I would tell everyone to do
Geno Injian the way you walk... as in posture?
I believe i have shoulder impingement as well although i haven't been diagnosed professionally with it. Im doing some rehabilitating exercises at home but was wondering if i should continue to do any pushing motions during my workouts. When i take Advil its fine but i dont feel its the best thing to do. Please help, thanks
You could have elaborated more on the last point that one should know the difference between pain and fatigue. Many people consider fatigue as pain and end up pushing a lot less than what could have been possible.
Do we have to do stretching after calistenics routines?
