Bolts wedged between the coils on just one side will cause a spring to bow when compressed (remember those aluminum spring stiffening inserts from back in the day). A bar sticking out that only grabs one side of the coil might help, as it will flex open a bit.

Man it's crazy that it took so much while trying to be unsafe! Honestly after watching the first half of the video might give someone the wrong impression, but I think airbuddy in these comments have witnessed a potential accident themselves or from others. I've had three springs leave the tool myself, one from those shitty bolt clamps and two from different dealership spring tools.. all three of them surpassed my super Saiyan Matrix speed reaction, leaving the area completely before I could even blink and being super lucky after two previous that the last one of them resulted in a minor knee cap injury where I was bracing the special tool. Still absolutely terrifying after 3/4 thousand McPherson struts... But awesome quick money. Name of the game😅🎉

Hello HPC. Nice work with springs. Lethal power in those. Ok, for 30 years I have used 30cm tall X 20cm dia hard-wood stumps, bark removed, the same 2. Finally my son asked me to wrap 2 stainless hose clamps around each, close to the ends. Applied them as tight as the small 6mm bolt head would allow. We put one end of small cars on them, nice to sit on, endless uses. Now we are wondering just how strong those are? You did a similar test before, using fresh soft wood and no hose clamps. Is it possible to press stumps like these? Love the new bunker. Something has to crack the cement someday. Kipis

Then release it and compress it again and compare the graphs to see if the spring lost any "springiness".

Used to work in a place that made air brake actuators, and the springs in those are similar in thickness to the big car spring. Just a bit shorter coil overall. It only took a big air cylinder to compress those.
Inside the press the polycarbonate is plenty to handle the ricochet, the problem is when something holding it back fails with air pressure. We had a few holes in the ceiling insulation (not the metal) where a brake failed on the air tester table, due human error while assembly. So they can be dangerous, but you have to mess up pretty bad to get hurt.
One guy was taking apart a caterpillar bulldozer style brake actuator, missed taking out one of the cap screws before he started raising the press. It of course kinked sideways like yours did, and ricoched out of the press. He took a side swipe to his chest and face, went home for the day and was back the next. Just a bruise and a bruised ego.
That press didn't have a front guard door like the others for some reason. Probably something to do with the style of brakes made on that line. Lots of Volvo and caterpillar style with cap screws, instead of cage bolt and clamp band like most double diaphragm trailer brakes.

I have used a hydraulic press for decades checking both suspension spring rates and valve springs. Only compress them an inch on coil over springs and to installed height.
I have scared the hell out of myself on road cars removing front coil springs,, on double wishbone cars. Had the jack slip out on a spring between the wish bones with a big twang. Luckily I was hanging on to the jack handle and stepped back quickly. Spring on the top wishbones are even more scarey, salvaging components and cut a spring in the middle with an oxy torch. Spring even then had a great deal of energy. The other side I heated every coil red hot and sagged it a lot. Far safer though NOT if you wish to reuse the spring. I have a coil spring compressor that works on Mac struts but not in that situation.

Lauri and Hanna this was such a great video of the new bunker being used. you should build a tool that will make it easier to make the spring shot farther and with more pressure.
