    Didnt break but engine shut off from teeth skipping.
    Engine is non interference. If you do this with a interference engine it will blow up.

    Most toyota engines are non-interference (no hitting valves with piston). Just set the timing and slide a new OEM toyota belt and Japanese bearings and drive another 100K miles.

  • @viburnumwillow4669
    @viburnumwillow4669 Před 6 lety +37

    The engine won't blow up if the belt breaks on an interference engine. More than likely the piston will just impact, and bend the valves in the cylinder that is next in the firing order after the belt breaks. That's what your timing belt does is synchronize the timing between the crankshaft and the camshaft(s) so everything moves in the correct order and at the correct "time". The engine won't explode, unless there are other serious problems, you will just lose compression in the cylinder with the impacted valves.

    • @refluxcatalyst7190
      @refluxcatalyst7190 Před 2 lety +7

      ...Yes it will. The valves bend or break off, destroying the piston, cylinder, and head. That's an entire longblock. Had it happen on my 1.8T VW. Yes, it absolutely will, and does destroy the engine.

      @@chrisladouceur4093 false. Happens all the time. Breaking a timing belt on a crash engine (interference) destroys the engine in a catastrophic way. MAYBE you get lucky and only the shortblock is gone, but often enough it ruins the inside of a cylinder or leads to a broken valve getting caught by the piston skirt and knocking a hole in the side of the block. Or it causes the piston to disintegrate, and the wrist pin goes thru the block. None of this is "odd" or "unheard of." If fact, they are "known methods of failure for this particular instance." That's "blown up." It's real, it's a known mechanism of failure. Not much to argue about here bud...

      If he actually drove the car and accelerated onto a highway, it would have snapped no problem. The point of changing the belt, especially on an interference engine is so you don't bend any valves if the belt fails or skips a tooth. It doesn't have to break to hurt the engine, just stretch. Sure it won't matter much if it's not an interference engine, but it's still an inconvenience.
