- We dearly love the new full auto machine gun slingshot bolt shooter. The rack and pinion method works so well that we have fired hundreds, even thousands of shots with that weapon.
Many fans suggested going big with the concept. While that is still very much an option (imagine a full auto ballista shooting flagpoles tipped with hay forks, powered by a tractor engine), we decided to go tiny first!
See this totally sweet and very functional little full auto shooter, powered by a battery screwdriver... or a hand crank, whatever you prefer.

I probably don't need blueprints, but can I please ask, how exactly did you cut the wheels and teeth so cleanly and accurately? I think that's what would hold me back.
I use my coping saw. Very accurate cuts.

Haha I love these rack and pinion full auto slingshots Being able to watch the entire mechanism go through the motions each time it fires just increases how awesome they are. This may be my favorite of all the contraptions you have made so far.
The machine is quite impressive. The large version was quite a concept. You reinvented it to suit a modern man by scaling it down and with the minor detail adjustments. I think it's ready for sale on the American market. Fathers and sons would spend so much time together having fun with these.

you should try to reroute the trigger wires to place the trigger inline with the pistol grip.
Why? Works fine the way it is.
JoergSprave true, but I remember you saying that on your bigger build, people were asking about using a joint to put the drill inline with the grip. I'd think that rerouting the wires would be easier and keep you from power reduction.
But why should I destroy my nice little screwdriver for a useless modification? People need to think outside of the box.
JoergSprave good point, just an idea for if you do any modifications to the trigger system. did it take you a while to design the mechanism? it works beautifully.

Options include adding a lever set from the grip to the trigger. An extended trigger, if you will.

high torque you could put a larger motor IN the weapon then convert the power via belt or chain also could help with the torque with the pulleys or gears
isn't a powerdrill already the pretty close to the smallest way to fit a high torque motor and a powerfull battery into a small case ?
yes you are right it would make no sense to build a complicated custom motor setup when you could use a powerfull drill instead!
TheRedemeer The motors are simple brushed motors: a brushless motor would be better, if you could install it in the drill/screwdriver. Problem is they need a speedcontroller instead of a simple switch.
What happens if you go nano and make a needle shooter? I can imagine Joerg laughing and chasing someone while covering their back in needles :D

The way the gear pulls back the rack reminds me of how the sector gear and piston work in an airsoft gun, having teeth on one portion of rotation, then space to allow it to fire.
There are also "dual-sector" gears which have two sets of fewer teeth, with the spaces in between. The design could be used in this toy but would require much stronger bands and even smaller bolts (perhaps ball bearings?) as the rack would only be pulled about half as much. It effectively doubles the rate of fire by cycling the piston/rack twice per rotation of crank.

240 fps is 6x slower, not 4! (Edit: I'm dumb, 4 is correct) You can make it 10 times slower if you export in 24 fps instead of 60. Just explain that at the start of the video and 60 fps fanboys will understand ;)
240/60=4. I can actually play it back slower than 60 fps if I want to, but that wasn't necessary here. Slow enough and super smooth motion.
Oh yes, of course, messed up my math there for a second haha. Still think slowing it down more would be a bit cooler though!
It is 4x slower, since the camera only records with 60fps normally.
4x60=240fps. 6x slower would be 360fps ;)
