How To Weaponize Mouse Traps

  • Mouse traps come in various sizes. Especially the bigger types (that are also suitable for catching rats) use seriously powerful springs. This sparked an idea: Is it possible to make a slingshot that uses mouse traps instead of rubber?
    Yes, as this video clearly proves. But it gets even better when you add rubber bands - because then the power of the springs add to the power of the rubber.
    As a little extra bonus, a new enhancement for the large CO2 injector is shown and tested.

    This is the practical extension of the slingception project. I think this is how you may finally exceed the maximum velocity of rubber!
    Can a slingshot break the sound barrier?
    Another thought, a bull whip makes a cracking sound because the tip exceeds the sound barrier. Can this be applied to accelerate a steel ball?

    • @DaveMoustache
      @DaveMoustache Před 9 lety +5

      The thing about whips is that they get smaller and smaller towards the tip. Thus the mass that needs to be accelerated gets smaller and smaller as well. If you add a heavy steel ball to the end, I suspect that the whip wouldn't work properly anymore. But an interesting thought nonetheless!

    • @Gr0nal
      @Gr0nal Před 9 lety

      A whip does not crack because the tip breaks the sound barrier. In fact, the 'crack' sound is heard when the tip is actually travelling at about twice the speed of sound.
      What makes the sonic boom is the propagation of a wave down the length of the whip.

    • @piranha031091
      @piranha031091 Před 9 lety

      As DaveMoustache said, the extreme speed of the whip comes from the fact the kinetic energy of something heavy (the thick and wide base of the whip) gets concentrated into something much lighter (the thin tip of the whip)
      If you wanted to apply that to a steel ball, you'd have to accelerate something heavier than a steel ball, and than get it to transfer all its energy to the steel ball. I'm not sure how that might be done.
      Rubber-powered trebuchet maybe? It would certainly have to be made of really resistant materials.

    • @BmanUltimate

      PandaManMk2000 Travelling at twice the speed of sound is breaking the sound barrier...

    • @Gr0nal
      @Gr0nal Před 9 lety

      BmanUltima True. What I meant is that the sonic boom created by the tip of the whip is negligible. The one you actually hear is from the acceleration of the wave travelling down the whip.

    Don't let the haters that "unsubscribed" because you aren't focusing purely on sling shots make you change the way you run your channel. Not only that, but let's be honest, you are a smart man with many ideas and clearly sling shots have a limitation.

    me again. pennsylvania rat traps have plastic or copper bait plates. but here's where the fun comes in. take a slat of oak from a commercial pallet and cut it about 10 inches(25 cm). then round out a nice handle at one end. take the assembly from the rat trap, and mount it on the other end of the slat. leave 2 inches(5 cm)for the action, and bore a hole for the brass. twist a small wire around the brass'es groove, and let it outlay about a 1/4 inch(6 mm). make a small notch for the outlay, and use 2 drywall screws to lock it in place. we're almost done. snub a thumbtack and tape that over the primer to complete the mechanism. for a silencer, use a wide mouth half pint(1/4 liter)plastic bottle, and fix the cap with several layers of a whoopie cushion, hot water bottle, or rubber web. just turn the bottle into the cap when ready to use. silent but deadly. only effective within 6 inches(15cm)of target, however. joergsprave has my permission to make this device, and upload his video of it in action to his joergsprave channel. -M kusanagi

    You should consider making a narrow version of this, where the the mousetrap's arms swing on the outside. The rapid expansion in width in the middle of the mousetrap's swing should kick the puch forward more quickly, I imagine. Would also be interesting to see, if elastic bands would dampen or even neutralize that effect. Cheers, Martin.

    If you'd make the string shorter, so that it is almost under tension whilst the mouse traps are closed, it should maximize the force on the ball.
    Also the speed increase in the rubber band version wasn't quite so big, because the rubber bands take away some of the force of the mouse traps. As the traps close, the bands are in the movement of relaxing. Then the mouse traps spring, so the rubber bands can be strained again. So the force of the mouse traps is swallowed by about 80% by the rubber bands.

    I think the string might actually work quite well if it was much shorter. If it was the same length as the distance between the mousetraps, then when they snapped shut the string would be pulled taut, which would fling the ball. This would add to the speed exponentially, as the traps would first pull the string forward but then start pulling the string perpendicular to the direction the string is moving.

    Try to make the space between the mouse traps a little bigger so the rubberband wont meet.And perhaps make someting like a wooden hand to hold a part of the rubberband.(so a part would be tighter than the other one.).This way you would eliminate internal turbulance of the rubber band and the energy would not be consumed by that.The secret to high speed velocity throw a fluid medium(the atmospher/air in this case)is to eliminate the turbulance or air friction with the metal ball.The second you cannot do, but the first is fairly easy.You do that, the rubberband will not vibrate and will not touch eachother ( 06:36) and you will gain much more speed.

    Here's an idea, when I was a child my father made me a rubber operated model airplane, basically the inside was a rubber attached to the rotor and you would simply wind up the rotor, so that when it released, the rubber did operate the rotor and that was to propell the small plane. Probably you could use this technique to propell a small drone and possibly you can acellerate the winding process with a drilling machine. If that works, you can try upgrading the drone to bomb zombies with steelballs.

    I imagine you would get more of an effect if you mount the traps so that the elastic bands are in line with your hand/grip when being pulled back, as they would be with a regular slingshot. With your current design your arms are at full draw but you are losing 10\15cm of stretch in the bands because of the mechanism of the trap

    it works kinda like a compound bow. maybe you can perfect this with useing springs and a cam with rubber, see if you can increase the rubbers force by 75% more, or so that you dont have to draw as hard

    I really like the design of the new CO2 spike. But It looks as if you could turn that into a bolt. Or some sort of projectile.

    so, you essentially built a handheld torsion ballista..
    i am both, impressed, and slightly unsurprised that the torsion ballista idea was reinvented
    perhaps scale it up?

    The mouse traps firing at the same time looks really cool but it doesn't seem too useful yet! I would like to see a huge version though.

    I recall making some mouse trap powered toy cars in school. You can tie a piece of string to the arm and wind it around the back axle of the car. Over time the traps weakened and I wonder if it will happen with this slingshot design.

    Hello Jeorg, I see you specialize in making various weapons which reminds me of one i made when i was 12. Its called a katarro which consists of a Y stick like the catapult which has a bridge with a notch in the centre which is attached between the Y and fitted with a strong rubber sling which fits into the notch of the arrow. It shoots arrows just as well as any bow but is much easier carried. I think you might like it.

    Nice video. The mousetraps reminded me a bit of cams in a compound crossbow. Would it be possible making a compound slingshot?

    i think you could make a very powerful sling shot on a much larger scale related to this one, maybe with larger springs and thicker rubber with a pump action or winch mechanism to draw it. Just a thought, great video though

    I love the concept of accelerating the projectile. Have you ever made a compound sling shot? Something similar to a compound bow, using pulleys with rope and rubber tube. The rubber would act as the bow. Just a thought........

    Hier noch eine Idee (wird nichts weiter bringen aber einfach so aus Spass): Mach doch mal eine ,,deadly Triangel''. Eine grosse Triangel aus multiplex, unten einen Griff und dann noch innen drei Mäusefallen mit Gummi. Sowas ähnliches hattest du ja schon, nur mit 8 Gummibändern denk ich.
    Schönen Sonntag noch :)

    I would have gone for a design more like a roman scorpion. With the arms on the outside. Seems more efficient. Fun to watch anyway. ^^
