I really tried to love it.... but I couldn't find any redeeming features. The games were bad, the controller was terrible, and don't get me started on the card boxes! I really don't remember having as disappointing of a retro gaming experience... :-( I need to get a Sega Saturn... I also remember that being pretty terrible!
    Any other contenders?
The good news is that it can only be onwards and upwards from here!!

I had no idea how expensive those games were in the UK they were like 40 US over here. Enjoyed the video though keep up the great work like always!

Sorry buddy, I tried, but I just couldn’t love it! Yes they were expensive! And.... cartridges couldn’t be copied.... I think a lot of people had ps1s etc because the games could be copied more easily!

An honest review. I had fun in 4p mode with Mario Kart and Golden Eye.
But you say well about Turock, I am still dizzy playing it after 20 years.

N64 and Wii for me are the worst Nintendo consoles because I hated the default controller. They both have a handful of good games though I would say there is a nice Top 10 N64 and Wii games that are must plays but thats about it and I'm a Nintendo fan. SNES and Gamecube are way better.

Like, you are judging the controller a bit unfairly. The joystick was the first of its kind. Sure, other controllers iterated on it, but this was first. The three prongs was just in case the joystick was a failure. Judge it against the Saturn controller, the non-dual shock Playstation or the SNES one, not the dual shock which came *because* of the success that this controller was at its time.
I had a PS1, and honestly, it had some cool stuff, but the first playstation had like 4 games that were good, and the rest were all bad. Like, bad bad. The n64 cartridge system surely had its issues, but at least a lot of games were good, the games you WANTED to play, the games you felt you were missing out on. When the PS2 came out, I didn't get a PS2, I got an n64. The N64 couch multiplayer was unparalleled for its era. It didn't always look great, or good, but it was so much more fun. The n64 was the "grass is greener" console for me, and it turns out it was pretty green for me.
Your criticism about jumping into 3D too soon, however, is quite accurate.
Everyone's experience is individual. I would never go back to either the ps1 or the n64 today though. I imagine it aged poorly, especially single player, like most early 3D consoles. I'd rather get a SNES than a n64 or Ps1

It’s amazing how subjective the subject is! Even now PlayStation vS Xbox…. I’ve had both and no real loyalty to one or the other. It really does come down to the games.
I tried but really couldn’t warm to the the N64. Mario 64 am used me for a while, but that was about it. What games would you suggest that I should have tried for the n64?
Absolutely agree, the SNES trumps many retro consoles for me. I don’t currently have one apart from the Classic/mini. I need to get one ASAP though!

@@retro-unboxing I will definitely agree to it being subjective. But all my recommendations will be due to the social aspects of gaming, which were the n64s strength in my world. The amount of brilliant stories created with your mates on the couch, going to grab a bite, coming back. Tournament play on Smash. So yeah, maybe I am clouded by my memories here, and maybe it's part of what you said in the video, the time in life you were when the console dropped.
Today at my age, hanging out with mates is a whole project. But back then I was a young teen, and we all lived close and you could pop over and have a multiplayer experience and create stories that you would talk about for weeks. That, to me, was the brilliance of this console and what put me on the Nintendo path.
With that said, the single player experience. I haven't played any of these since I got the original Xbox mind (the one comment I made about my dad's colleagues kids on another video!), so I don't know how those hold up. You seem to enjoy racing games, platformers or shooters, yeah? Jet Force Gemini has its flaws (collectibles to progress) , but is considered quite underrated. Conker's Bad Fur is an E-rated and infamous game but is also surprisingly good. The Xbox version got a bit neutered. Vigilante 8 was my favourite car game until I got burnout 3 on the Xbox. Castlevania: Legacy of Darkness was another one I enjoyed.
I realised after my comment that, yeah, the way I played might have had more of an impact on the games' strengths than the games themselves. So take that with a grain of salt. I was a few years younger than you, and probably hung out with my friends differently.
Either way, I've checked a few of your videos, and I really enjoy the production on this, so I will keep watching.
      (Edit:
Oh, and these days, I am a pc gamer with some switch gameplay. The modern ps/xb basically feels like watered down PCs to me, so I would rather play one of those.)

I definitely agree on the social aspect! For me that was the Amiga! Going round tour mates house to copy game 🙈. But also Sensible World Of Soccer tournaments taking the save disk around….. that and Mario Kart on the SNES…. Plus SSX on the PS2!
We very much seem more ‘connected’ now with the internet Xbox live etc…. But it’s not the same as all piling round to your mates house! I have fond memories of Goldeneye 2/4 player in the late 90’s….. it just hasn’t aged well… in my opinion.
Thanks for the positive comment… I’ll be back to it soon…. If got loads more planned!

You picked nearly all trash games to judge the system on, you should have picked from the known good games to give the console a fair chance. Mario Kart 64 isn't considered the better of the Kart racers for the system, Diddy Kong Racing is a better game.
