    This video explores the politics behind the Brexit vote per UK regions and goes in-depth about a hypothetical civil war that might develop. Just what sort of forces might the whole Scotland and select N. Ireland's insurgents count on? What sort of forces might England send? How might it all end?

      @wthomas8383 Před 4 lety +25

      City-state of London needs the food trucks and trains to stay relevant. Cut off the supply, wait for the implosion, clean up the rest.

    • @JGA5150
      @JGA5150 Před 4 lety +10

      @@wthomas8383 True, but London could start off with a strong hand in that they would immediately capture the seat of Government, the Treasury, the Monarch etc. They'd probably want to use this leverage or take advantage of the immediate confusion to extend their territory and annex Kent, or at least take a corridor of Kent all the way to Dover so that they could get resupplied by their European allies via the port and Channel Tunnel.
      The city-state of London would be a vassal or puppet state of the EU, so they wouldn't be going it totally alone for very long, although in the anarchy with the Met's resources stretched from being a de facto army, London would probably devolve into warring factions on the streets, especially when resources become scarce.

    • @wthomas8383
      @wthomas8383 Před 4 lety +3

      @@JGA5150 Well you do make a good point about confusion. Without a stable hierarchy of command a unified independent London would have the initial advantage. The main issue would be getting control of the Thames in order to secure some sort of port for supply reinforcements in the event of a drawn-out affair. Although the argument could also be made that in the event of a rogue capital, the military could just take control/military bases could operate on their own authority. I'm not entirely sure of the exact distance from London to Dover but the average length of time by car journey could be approximated to somewhere between 1-3 hours (based off the distance from London to Southampton). The London government could annex several surrounding areas but would then be tasked with holding it with a (police force?) small paramilitary unit. All the Army (or Royal Navy in the case of port capture) would need to do is prevent outside EU influence from artificially propagating London, use the Army to quarantine the expanded London to its extended size, and take back the individual counties all the way back to Westminster Palace.
      Then again in this sandbox scenario it's impossible to predict what sort of politics might influence what lol. Don't think the EU/France would send a military invasion force to support one side or the other, but it could definitely use economic blackmail to compel either side (be it London or England) to act a certain way. But even in THAT case punishing England could risk escalating tensions with the US, without even mentioning the rest of the Commonwealth.
      I guess it just depends on who wants what and what each side is willing to do/sacrifice.

All that would happen if Scotland declared UDI and war, is the soldiers in Scottish bases would stay loyal to the British Army and it would be a slaughter when armed forces come up against unarmed civilians.
      No Scotland couldn't launch / build / drop any nukes. No the masses would not 'rise up', picking up non existent guns to resist the 'English oppressors'.

    I can’t help but feel a major miscalculation made in this video is the assumption that all (or even most) Scots serving in the British Army would defect to the Scottish Nationalist cause.
    I can assure you that the vast majority of Scots serving in the British army are fervently pro-union. Therefore I find any infighting within bases in Scotland extremely unlikely.
    Furthermore, just as Pro-independence civilians would organise into makeshift military units to blockade British army bases. You can expect an equal effort made by Pro-Union civilians to disrupt their opponents.
    I feel both points make the British Army’s situation in Scotland during the early stages of such a conflict much more safe than suggested in the video.

    As a Scotsman, and supporter of independence, I'd love to say "We'd send them hame again". However, even in this hypothetical situation, you're discussing Scots, English, Welsh, and Norn Irish in the same BASE rising up against one another. Utterly impossible.
    Scots are different...we've voted so. But we've spent the past 400 years as a united country. The vast majority of Scots have ancestry elsewhere in the UK, and a lot of the others have ancestry in Scotland. As a whole we think, and vote differently, but even those of us who support independence don't want it to be antagonistic. We love our brethern, and hate them in equal measure (especially when it comes to sport).
    If Scotland left peacefully, and a Westminster government (probably the Tories) decided to re-invade Scotland, I have absolutely no doubt, that all those men and women would refuse to fight. They would be fighting against the man who had their back in Fallujah. They'd be fighting against the woman they trained to be a pilot with. They'd be fighting against the person that helped them swim through a jungle river in Belize.

    As with all wars the country with the stronger economy wins eventually. The Scottish are great fighters but England has the money, the population and all the military hardware so England would win the ‘conventional war’ and it would slip into counter insurgency that would be slowly degraded by the English Army Units and MI6. It would be a messy affair but would bare no resemblance to Vietnam or Afghan as England understands Scottish culture and the motivation to fight would be there as it is so close to home. Over time the rebellion would slip into history and eventually you’d probably see the resettling of English families up into Scotland, first into the neutralised cities and then into each area as they become pacified. Over generations Scotland would be gradually forgotten and it would all just be known as England.

    Bloody hell, this comment section is stupid on all ends.
    Firstly, if England and Scotland went to war, there is absolutely no doubt that England would win. You're comparing a country with a population of 55 million against a country with a population of 5 million. Add the fact that guns, ammunition, and other weapons of war would be very hard to come by for the general public, which would be where Scotland's main strength would come from, as the Scottish military is tiny in comparison to the English military. and you've got yourself a clear victor. This is coming from someone who has lived in Scotland for most their life and is therefore unbiased.
    Secondly, to the people saying Scotland couldn't function as its own country, it most likely could. Scotland has massive oil reserves (an estimated 90% of all UK oil is under Scottish jurisdiction. Source: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/It%27s_Scotland%27s_oil), which would put it in the eyes of many countries as a trade partner, I imagine the USA in particular. Plus, the Scotch whisky industry already earns Scotland 5.5 billion a year with statistics that suggest it is ever growing (Scotch whisky's contribution to the UK economy had grown by 10% from 2016-2019. Source: www.insider.co.uk/news/whisky-worth-55-billion-year-14970271). With a small population of 5 million and a high likelihood an independent Scotland would re-join the EU, Scotland could see itself as a fairly successful tiny nation.
    Thirdly, to that one idiot in the comments who said America would side with Scotland because it hates England, that's not the case at all. Whilst the American and English population may not get along greatly, the American and English government are on extremely good terms. So good that there are even US military bases stationed in England. The USA would remain completely neutral in the situation.
    Goddamn, people, it's a hypothetical situation. Calm down.

    From a Welsh perspective, a few points I would make about how Wales would respond to this hypothetical scenario.
    Some Welsh volunteers would join the Scottish side as the Welsh nationalist party, Plaid Cymru, has some support, including some very hardcore support in some parts of north and west Wales. However, the numbers would be small. I would say a few hundred at most. They would almost entirely be untrained and of uncertain ability.
    There are also however large numbers of English people living in Wales, especially in the south and east and along the border. Some of these would sign up as volunteers for the UK army, along with Welsh unionist volunteers. I would say volunteers for the "UK" side would considerably outnumber the volunteers for the Scottish side, perhaps by a factor of about 5 to 1.
    In terms of Welsh independence, support for the notion lies around 15% at present. Initially, the vast majority of Welsh opinion would support the UK, or at least condemn the armed rebellions.
    If the hypothetical "war" takes an especially brutal turn, such as through civilian deaths, sympathy for the Scots and latent anti-English sentiment amongst some sections of the Welsh population might change opinions. Wales like England split almost down the middle in the Brexit referendum, so those views would serve to colour opinions on the Scottish rebellion to some extent. Those who supported Remain in the referendum would face a choice over whether to passively or actively support a pro-EU rebellion, or the UK.
    Although armed unrest would be highly unlikely, anti-war protests and potentially strikes would likely break out unless the UK achieved a swift and total victory, as a long guerrilla campaign would be unpopular. This would have a minimal practical effect as the Welsh economy is a small percentage of UK GDP, but would embarrass the UK government and hold propaganda value to the rebels, as well as damage the reputation of the UK government.
    An independent nationalist rebellion in Wales cannot entirely be ruled out. Such a rebellion would be very small and certain to fail but would divert UK resources from the other rebellions.
    In terms of the Welsh government, it would support the UK side to a greater or lesser degree, depending on the party of government. Wales has basically three parties capable of forming a government. In practice, most governments are coalitions in which the Labour Party is normally the dominant power. The Labour Party has led every government in Wales since the formation of the assembly. It would likely lead the government during this hypothetical war too. It would be supportive of the unionist cause, but would favour diplomatic means. It would possibly have significant differences with the UK government, led most likely by the Conservative Party.
    The likely outcome would be that Wales would be in practice largely neutral during the conflict, emerging as a diplomatic channel for both sides. The reality is that civil war is so fundamentally opposed to British nature that it wouldn't happen, but if it did, Wales would largely stay out of the fighting, and would lead efforts to bring about peace between the sides.
    I think, even though you have not modelled the reaction of the Republic of Ireland, EU and the rest of NATO too much, in reality a British civil war would very quickly become a matter of concern for a huge variety of powers. The EU and the Republic of Ireland would actively interfere, as would the US (what stance they would take depends on who is in power in the US), and many Commonwealth and G20 nations would also have interests at stake, be they business investments or political interests.
    Honestly, who knows what the outcome would be. The long term outcome, in my opinion, would be determined by how brutal the UK response would be. If the UK response would be restrained, there would be little support for the rebels, either domestically or internationally, but if not, then there would likely be sympathy for them and outside powers would see it as an excuse to intervene.

      @@BlackTeethMedia Wales voted to leave the EU by a very narrow margin, around 52-48, the same margin as the UK as a whole and narrower than in England. Note also that the vote skewed heavily towards older voters. In the extremely unlikely event this scenario ever broke out, we would be looking at a population somewhat removed from that at the referendum, so predicting what the population in Wales would support in this scenario cannot be looked at solely through the prism of the referendum. You correctly point out that the Welsh nationalist movement is pro-EU or favoured remaining in the EU, but this describes most young people in Wales, whether they support unionist parties or Plaid Cymru.

    England tried to invade Scotland in the late 13th century. The subsequent wars lasted a generation, but ended in English defeat- despite England's far larger population and greater resources. While the initial pitched battles would be pretty one-sided, England actually holding Scotland in the long term would be practically impossible.

      2) the only “debt” Scotland has is the money we pay into the UK, of which only half is returned and the other is spent on England “on Scotland’s behalf” and then it’s attributed as “Scotland’s share of the debt”
      3) oil isn’t our only resource, we have great hydroelectric potential, wind power and timber to name but a few, and we mustn’t forget that without Scotland, much of England would be dying of thirst, fortunately for you England is allowed to take Scottish water (which is free in Scotland by the way, so you pay us nothing for it) and then through water-meters England makes money off our water, none of which is ever returned to Scotland.
