  • Join me for another Maine plein air adventure. This solo camping trip finds me outside of Freeport, Maine at Bradbury State Park. It didn't start out too well...had a downpour...but, by evening it turned out beautiful. My painting the next day was a bit of a hot mess, but I persevered and came up with something. While not perfect, there are some aspects that I like. Plein air is always a challenge for sure. You can't win them all :)
Thank you for watching the video.

Ha..I know...I know...Trust me...I was really making sure I had contact with surfaces :) Not a great plan...it was off the cuff decision. I made sure to pick routes with the least amount of vertical ascent to minimize slippage.

Thanks for taking us along on your camping/plein air trip! I enjoyed the views (and especially the sounds). You picked a great spot to paint - what if you raised up the left side of the island’s base? It doesn’t have to be an exact rendition of the scene. You could make a nice studio painting from this. Thanks also for the hints about doing small studies of different aspects of what you’re going to paint, and for showing us alternate painting locations. I’m working on a painting with a similar treed island so it was interesting to see your approach!

Hi Hunter - Funny you should mention sounds. I have headphones that I thought I was going to wear while painting, but in reality, I enjoy the sounds around me....makes me MORE present in my mind for the painting process. BUT...they would come in handy for super noisy situations in an urban environment. I do think the painting has some "bones" to salvage it. Stay safe.

It’s very disappointing when your painting isn’t working out as you’d like...we all go through it at some point. Sometimes We just have to push through. I’ve done a few plain air pieces and wasn’t happy with them. When I got home, I touched them up and ended up making them more polished but I wasn’t happy with the fact that they lost the ‘energy’ they had. I would rather have tat energy to them than polish them up and lose that. That’s just my feelings about it.
It’s cool that you got out to camp and hike and enjoy nature. It’s all inspirational in many ways. Hope you felt like it was worth it.
I appreciate your videos. Enjoy the journey 😉 good job.

Hi Christine - I use the old fishing saying: " A bad day fishing is better than a good day at work"....just replace fishing with painting :) Any artist that thinks they are going to nail every time is in for disappointment. It's funny because people might expect a CZcams artist to have it "put together" to produce a painting for a video, but that is not the real world. For me...what you see is what you get. The good and bad. Thanks for tuning in.

habowskistudio ...good point, absolutely true! We’ve been doing a lot of Salmon fishing in the last couple weeks, I can vouch for that saying! 😉 I think most people appreciate the artists who are out there being real. I know I do and have read many other comments saying the same. Keep up the good work!

I really enjoyed this video, even though the end result was a painting that didn’t entirely satisfy you. Plein air painting looks tough, and the massive value range on a sunny day! Whew! It’s valuable and normalising to see that other artists struggle (and even fail). And it’s also fun to see a little of Maine - so many artist have based themselves there over the years, and I can see why. I am so glad you posted this despite the challenges you faced. Amanda

Yep happens to me all the time, I rush out and not take my time with the sketch and end up with an average painting. I like your painting Bruce, Maybe use it for a study for a larger piece at home in the studio also Maine is Beautiful🎨👍

Hi Tez - Good word ..."average". Tough to avoid those types of paintings sometimes. I try to ask myself when working/finishing a painting if I would hang on my wall if it didn't sell.

Hi Bruce....I watched this video 3 times and paused it many times because I could see your frustration with the scene. I think what was making it so difficult was the lack of contrast created by the time of day maybe. At a different time of day there may have been a more defined light vs dark not only on the island but also the sand and rocks. My suggestion is this. Brighten the left and darken the right on almost everything, I know it may not be true to what you were really seeing but the increase in contrast I think would make the various features "pop". Just trying to help...thanks for sharing.

Hi - Great insight. I agree about time of day.....the usual morning or late evening light in painting time is sound advice. Sometimes I try something difficult to see if I can make it interesting...doesn't always work ..ha ha. I think the biggest problem I had was a lack of vision/idea. I just kinda' said "what a great day to paint" and dove into it....hoping to have my experience save it. I'll pay more attention next time :)

habowskistudio I’m in Saco. I’ve never done plein air before. Wanted to but a little nervous about people watching me. I know that’s weird. I’m new at painting. So guess just insecure. I have been teaching myself pastels for last few years. I just started painting with gouache about 2 months ago. My background is photography. I was in the photo lab business for 20 yrs. I love your videos and would love to get together sometime. 😁

Hi. Is that easel made with legs already or you made it by yourself. I can't find that kind of easel all what can you do is just put it on the table but I would like to take it with me on plein air and make videos as well instead filming just in room.

Hi - The box is a 9 x 12 Guerrilla Painter box ( you can order these anywhere) The box comes with a plate to mount a tripod onto but it also works well on a tabletop. If you buy this, buy the Guerrilla Painter tripod....you can't use a cheap one. It will be to0 lightweight and the box will wobble. Hope this helps.....happy painting.

Hi - I'm using the 9 x 12 Guerrilla box that I bought many years ago....holds up well. I bought a newer 8 x 10 G.bx and I think the hardware quality has gone down. I like that my box holds all of my things....paint, palettte knife, palette cup, and my panels.
