Plein air painting demo - "Morning Fog"

- It was a really foggy day when I painted this plein air oil painting. I usually don't paint this type of such, but I wanted to stretch my artistic horizons. The palette I used was: Titanium White, Ultramarine Blue, Hansa Yellow Light, Napthol Red, Burnt Umber, Indanthrone Blue, Burnt Sienna, and Cadmium Yellow Medium. The challenge was creating interest by using color and contrast in strategic areas. Also...in a scene like this, it is very important to pay careful attention to your edges of shapes to create atmosphere/air in your painting. Let me know if you like the longer video format and commentary structure. Thanks for watching. Questions?...leave them in the comments.

Wonderful!
Thank you.
Excellent!! Thank you!
Glad you enjoyed it!
Congratulations on this work! We plein air folks rely a lot on those extreme lights/shadows contrast, and pulling off a subdued misty/foggy effect is quite a score!
Thank you Christopher. I don't prefer soft type of subjects(fog, hazy, etc. ), but I just wanted to see if I could do it or was not capable of doing it. Some artists avoid subjects because of their skill level, rather than try something and build the tool box of skills. This was a test in edge control for sure and chroma control.
Awesome!
Thanks Glenda. Soft focus pieces are not my usual thing.
Beautiful painting
Thank you so much 😀
I love this one too Bruce, it`s like an old painting from master!
Wow! I'm honored by your comment...means a lot.
You have a great way of explaining things! I really enjoy your videos. They are soothing and inspiring at the same time!
Thank you Sarah!
Well done, Bruce. Really great to see how you do trees.
Thank you so much, Peter.
I am amazed at your ability to turn a seemingly uninteresting grove of trees into such wonderful painting . The brush stokes, the values, the colors all make for a piece that I would stop to examine closely . I've mentioned before that as a longtime watercolor artist suddenly deciding to take on oils. Your videos really teach what and how to do it. I listen and watch everything. I'm in northern Florida and very different landscapes here . I've not yet gotten brave enough to do plein air, but maybe one day. Thank you for what you do.
Your welcome. This was out of my comfort zone :) I usually don't do such soft value type paintings, but I wanted to expand my knowledge base and try something new.
Very, very nice. I really like your "painterly" style.
Thank you
I must say Bruce I like the longer detailed videos...thanks
I agree with you and will try my best to accommodate. Take care.
Nice painting, Bruce. I enjoyed the video and your tips.
Thanks Paul
Caught fog effects well and kept values differentiation too by the look of it. Well done.
Thank you...I feel pretty confident about my ability with values.
loved watching you paint detail, thank you
Thank you very much for watching...glad you enjoyed it.
Fantastic painting Bruce and very informative.
Thanks Larry
starting with a Plein Air group this year and my main goal is to try and paint loose. I get to wrapped up in details so I hope I can learn from painting outdoors, I try to watch videos that feature outdoor painting picking up tricks along the way. good video here thank you.
Hi Brian - You'll love outdoor painting....very enjoyable. Thanks for watching my video.
I really enjoyed this one Bruce! Great feel of thick air.
Thanks Dennis. I'm liking your new filming style...mix of real time and voice over.
habowskistudio I think I’m finally getting comfortable with it. Looks like your channel is really gaining some good momentum. Me too but I’m a little behind you still.
It's getting there :) I'm a little late getting a new vid up...I've been playing around with a more compact camera. What do you shoot your vids with ? BTW...I like the drone footage...pretty cool.
habowskistudio I primarily shoot with a GoPro Hero 4 Black. I’ll be making a video tonight to show all my gear.
good work of art
Thanks
Beautiful, excellent work.
Thank you so much. I usually don't paint soft edged type subjects, but I wanted to hone my skills. We, as painters, have to be careful not to get into painting the same old thing because it's our "comfort zone".
Great demo!!! I paint very similar and this is really helpful! Hansa yellow once again. i guess i'll have to try it!
Thanks Jon...glad you enjoyed it.
Great video, I like that you listed your colours.
Thanks! I try to because other artist might want experiment with the same colors.
Nice, another great channel
Thank you very much.
I really enjoyed that. Can you tell me what's in the can that you dip the brushes into every now and then.
Hi Andrew - That was turps. in the can. Thanks for taking time to watch it.
I obsessed over what the number was on the long filbert brush and the brand name . Art A.D.D.
Hi Patty - I use many brands of brushes, but I'll take a look at the video and try to decipher what it was. :)
Hi Patty - In the beginning I used a generic company size 6 bristle brush. When I got to the sky I used a Rosemary and Company size 8 "Ivory" line flat brush and then for some finessing in sky and such I used a Rosemary and Company "Classic"line Egbert brush...which has long hairs and is good for some subtle blending and other adjustments. Hope it helps!
Thank you! :)
Thanks - this is great..
I appreciate you watching it...I'm trying, every so often, to do more longer format in-depth videos with voice over to explain my ideas and techniques in detail.
Judy Farrow, New Mexico. I love watching your videos! I learn constantly from your examples! Thank you so much from sharing. I have a couple of friends those color shaper tools, but never thought to use them as you did with the fence posts!
Thanks Judy....I'm glad you're learning something from my videos. I just try to be honest and straightforward in my videos. The tool has been fun. You never know where some "mark making" ideas will come from.
Thank you for the video. Your painting is wonderful. I think you purchased rosemary brushes. Could you do a review. I want to buy from rosemary but do not know which ones to buy.
Hi Mary - I did a review on my brushes..You can find it on my channel under title " Rosemary and Company Brush Review"
What type of canvas are you using and did you pre-paint the background? It's very pretty. If you painted a white canvas, what colors did you mix for that peachy grey brown color?
Hi - This piece was painted on panel. I use MDF panel board from Home Depot that I cut to size and gesso. I then tone my board...in this case a greyish color using Ivory Black and Burnt Sienna. Thanks for watching it.
Please show us the scene you are painting.
I do in some of my videos.
Sorry. I think I just found a video where you reviewed the brushes. Will take a look.
