Something I noticed about sizes - in the U.S. I usually fit the smallest adult clothing sizes, and I stand out as small here. But in Japan, the smallest adult size is too small for me... I also feel like in the U.S. being thin / healthy can be socially isolating because many people here buy in to the "body-positivity" narrative that implies a BMI > 40 is something to celebrate...

Like I say "I don't 'go on diets'" because * I don't * , but that doesn't mean 'even if I say no, give me all your food'....the worst part is when they're like 'it's a waste of food if you don't eat it' - like...I eat as cleanly as possible, but I still have a threshold- I'm not like one of those ppl who compete to eat as much as they can - if someone's like "hey, I can't finish this" then I'll probably eat it BECAUSE it's like a couple bites or sth - but when you're telling me to eat like 3+ times what I usually eat (and I say very clearly that I usually don't eat n amount of x) - I'm sorry if it's rude, but I physically can't eat that much (like during maybe large meals, I *have* to take a break halfway through because I don't want any leftovers but I rly don't want to eat anymore)

Being fat in Japan CAN come in handy sometimes. I used to commute on the Den-en-toshi Line every morning. At Azamino station there was always a big dude getting on the train. I wouldn't say he was sumo-size, but pretty big. He had this technique where he would take a few steps back, charge at the door like a bull and throw himself into the train. No matter how crowded it was, he ALWAYS got on. Too bad about the people he crushed though...

The walking/public transportation culture in Japan is nice. I live in the US and I've been walking to work for the past year (about an hour of walking round trip) and people are always surprised that I don't drive. It'd be nice if the more people here used transportation and walking/biking. We'd all be a lot healthier. It'd be nice to have more farmer's markets and a stronger "cook at home" culture in the US too. Going to a nearby grocery store every day and cooking food for friends and family at home is so nice.

In my neighborhood, the walk to the nearest Loop bus stop takes over an hour. That’s not the fault of people living there; it’s the fault of a lack of initiative for local governments or even private companies to make well-connected bus and rail systems.

Not as many processed foods, or foods with additives, in Japan, compared to the shit we eat here in the US. There have been many studies showing that you could eat the exact same food, if not more food in other countries than in America and you could still lose weight. It's not about the food itself, it's about the nutrition the food gives you. American foods nowadays lack so much nutrients in them. That is why we have to eat so much of the food...

This actually sheds some light on a manga I just finished. One of the side characters is a chubby girl, and her best friend was constantly making comments about her weight that would be considered incredibly rude in America, and would even cause the end of the friendship. It was surprising to me to see these characters continue their friendship over several years despite the thinner one constantly making fun of her weight.

To be fair I was a very skinny kid but I don't think I was unhealthily so. It was just my frame. But whereas many people were self-conscious bc of their parents due to being fat, I was always self-conscious and insecure due to being skinny, especially since a lot of other people my age in our ethnic community were/are chunky and I was the outlier. I'm still very thin today but my mom's mentioned that my body turned out "all right" now since I filled out a little with age. 🙄 And when I say a little, I mean very little lol.

School children would teach each other how to throw there lunch away and participate in these movements without raising alarms. Despite this, there are little to no eating disorder treatment centers.

I'm pretty chunky, thankfully I live in a city of decency and schools take bullying seriously, children are all aware of the consequences of bullying and avoids it and reports possible instances even tickling is bad and if fighting starts the teachers come, calms the two students and let's them talk about their problems properly and have the two students apologize, If they can't do that the teachers usually call the parents and schedule a meeting, but if it's really drastic the teachers have no problem scaring the students to death lol. Also it's not just "who hit first" they reason why it happened, for example if the student was being teased and he or she retaliated by hitting, then the people teasing her will be the one who gets punished.
In my case the moment you don't let it bother you is the moment they don't have power, and when I faced actual targeted bullying(a transfer student essentially calling me fat on the first day of school), I can retaliate all I want(I punched him in the face after telling him we're not close for such "jokes" and my classmates all agreed)
Didn't get in trouble, and the transfer student transfered to another school.
Most cases of bullying is really gossips, and being fat doesn't really have much juice to squeeze when it comes to gossips.
So it's usually thin "sexy" students get the "I hear she has another boyfriend/ I hear he got someone pregnant" kind of gossips.
And when these things are reported it's pretty private talk with the teachers and nobody is allowed to disclose what was talked about.
Disrespecting the teachers is equal to a death sentence... Lol they will get so mad they can break school property, one once punched the wall next to the student, and it made his knuckles bleed and left a small crack on the wall.

I was 6'4" (193 cm) and 130 to 140 lbs (59 kg to 63 kg) and then I filled in to about 165 lbs (74 kg) and I looked about average for a man of my height. Then I started gaining a bit more weight than I would like when I was about 34 years old. I eventually got up to around 230 lbs (104 kg) and my boss said to me out of the blue one night, "Wow, you're getting kinda fat there buddy." and I was just shocked that he would say that to anybody without being asked for his opinion. So I just said thanks and kept working and he didn't pursue it any further. Then I started eating a bit better and exercising because I didn't like how round my belly was getting, not because some jerk named Todd decided to speak up. I dropped back down to around 175 lbs (79 kg) in a couple months time. Then that same boss decided to say "Hey you're getting pretty skinny, are you eating enough food?" And I just gave him two middle fingers and a choice word or two and mentally urged him to try and discipline me for that reaction. He gave a lame apology "I'm sorry, If I hurt your feelings." rather than saying something like "I'm sorry I hurt your feelings." like he didn't get how he was in the wrong but wasn't going to make a big deal out of it so he just said the bare minimum to back away from that situation. And we were both middle age white men, so I don't think that's a culture specific thing. It's just the people with no empathy who make those kind of comments. And those types of people exist in every culture.

My grandmother is from Japan and she moved to the states in the early 50's. My whole life one of the first things she says to me when I see her is about my weight. Then she always asks me when I'm getting married. I remember when I was in high school she didn't want my junior prom picture because she thought I looked fat and was ashamed to show her friends. I was only 90lbs! Now I'm usually between 100-105lbs and when she sees me it's always ooh gosh you get soo big how will you find a husband! She's 92 now and has dementia but she still always brings up my weight and marital status and now it's actually comforting like ooh she's still the same.

I had an aunt like that. Everytime I saw her it was something something about my appearance weight, hair, clothes. She would tell me to exercise. I would say I do exercise. Which I do. She would add some people can work out and work out and never lose weight. My entire life. The only time she ever uttered anything nice about my appearance was when I was 19 years old. She kept saying how better I looked. I had spent my last few years as a teen not eating. Living on black coffee and an apple a day. I saw her once a few years ago after not having seen her in years and she asks when am I getting married. I'm 38 now she passed away about a month ago. My 17 year old kid asked which aunt was this? I told him the one who gave you 20 bucks for dropping off groceries for her once. He says oh no she was nice😂

Ugh family members can be so rude. I guess that's one thing common among cultures. My husband had to go to the hospital for hypertension and all his parents could talk about was how many pounds he needed to lose. Totally discounting how much progress he made undoing his bad habits (which by the way they contributed hugely in his childhood...). Health is a lifestyle, not just a number on a scale.

@incontentia buttocks I know exactly what you mean. Besides my grandma I remember my friends/classmates used to call me fat when I was in 3rd grade. They used to point out how fat my thighs looked when I sat down. I still had my "baby fat" as some ppl call it. When I had my one and only growth spurt I slimmed down but I couldn't shake what they all had said. So in fourth grade I slowly started limiting how much I ate and that slowly progressed into me not eating at all for years. It wasn't until my mid 20's when I said screw it and started to feel comfortable with myself. It also wasn't until my 20's that I wore shorts again. From 3rd grade till 22 I never wore shorts bc 9f what they said about my thighs. It's crazy how much of an impact words can have on your life.

When we moved to Japan I got so bullied especially since I have green eyes they used to say "she wld be so pretty what a waste." Or that I was a "pig w a painted face." Just cause I was chubby I was trash, plus I was into anime/ manga and street fashion so my family talked down on me even more for being an otaku. I had a complete breakdown after H2, I became anorexic & bulimic but I got so much praise it reinforced my body dysmorphia. I got so thin; I cldnt go to college cause my anxiety was so bad. I tried to kill myself and my mom took me to a inpatient clinic in USA. I took a couple years for me thankfully my mom & bro were always supportive, my bro moved to USA w me to support me. I ended up going into mental health as Psychiatrist and when I finished my MD my Jiji would brag that Im a Dr. And so pretty. It still hurt everytime cause she didnt support me till I was her idea of beauty & success. Thankfully Im more stable & having struggled it helps me connect to others. I hate when people talk badly about others bodies or looks cause you never know what someones going through.

We worked all day and finally were able to sit down and eat what we made when everyone did buffet style and took the mochi they wanted to eat. I was in extremely good shape ( fitness model shape)but got a lot of weird/ dirty looks at the gym. I felt huge compared to the slim/ frail women of Japan. Very intimidating. In the city things were fine but at the gym not so much. Guess it's just like America. So much body shaming at the gym. This lady in the video doesn't look fat to me either she's beautiful. Not only do women come in different sizes but also our body compositions vary.

Yep, body shaming is forever and it sucks esp if u dont fit the standard there, im from asia and like if youre like severely underweight youre almost god like cuz you have nothing to insult esp if u are pretty or of the dominant culture and class, cuz my friend she's (tw weight mentions) 160 cm and 37 kg and she gets a lot of compliments and stares and makes me uncomfortable as a plus sized person

Your friends and relatives in Greece are the same as your friends and coworkers in Japan. I remember so much pressure when I was living in Greece to be thinner.

I was heavy in Japan. Not talking about being "an obese giant American", but more like 175 (80kg), due to being in a increasingly abusive marriage I went from 145 to 175. I felt like I might as well be on My 600lb life when I was at that weight, I could feel friends and strangers silently judging me. And finding clothes that fit, forget about it! Even though I was a US 13/14, I couldn't even find stuff that fit in the men's section! I had to order from the USA. And even before I put on the weight, I was a size 9/10, NO clothing in my size was available!
