I remember when Andy was designing this knife and he took everyone's input to heart. It may not be the perfect knife, but the heart and soul in the design can not be disputed.
@@DonnieBAllDay one of the best production knives I ever used (might be discontinued now) was the original Kabar Johnson Adventure Potbelly. Mine was the hollow grind version (sold it for no real good reason) and it chopped amazingly well, batoned pretty good but the clip style point did eat batons after a while. That said, my hands are between a small and medium or 8.5 on the European measure so that should be taken into account.
Totally agree. I pre-ordered mine based on Tran's humble confidence and thoughtful method that went into the creation of this knife. I love mine just as it is.
Batoning isn't a deal-breaker. You're in the woods. There are a LOT of batons if that secondary edge chews it up. But if you baton the portion of the knife spine closest to the handle and let the pointed half do its thing, it works perfectly fine. Awesome knife, I've owned mine since 2014 or 2015.. when they were just about to go into production and A.Tran was offering an introductory price. So glad I did because after that the price jumped another hundred bucks! Great vid 👍 "Oh no! I cut metal wire and the edge is..... perfect, ha!"
Honest knife review. Thank You. TOPS makes so many great knives and 1095 is easily field servicable. My favorite is their operator seven and texas creek models. I appreciate they do innovate and offer so many different blades.
I've had one of these for years. This is in my opinion the perfectly designed survival knife!!!! Every aspect of it has a purpose that it does extremely well. The handle on it is perfectly designed for shelter making and protection. That curve gives you more back purchase for thrusts not to mention lateral swipes to "limbs". you should be using a hatchet or an axe for splitting logs. I Know i know you don't want to carry more. Well you just proved you can, knives are not meant for splitting logs and never will be. PERFECT SURVIVAL KNIFE!!!!! also with a 3/16th thickness you can still cut up veg and meat at camp for food. If that's a problem that's why you carry a spyderco military edc.
I didn’t like having a sharp edge pointing back at me while I work, so I dulled the 2nd edge quickly after using it. But I do use this as my primary camp knife. Of the 40 ish knives I own it’s definitely top five favorites. Maybe top three as far as work horse knives go. I never carry an axe and personally the ability to baton wood is not that high on my list of attributes I look for in a knife. But I do carry a light Mora with me as a secondary knife. I didn’t like using the Tahoma for the finer tasks. Even though it’s completely capable of preforming them. I collect knives for two reasons, hard use, and blades I loved as a youngster. Bowie’s and camp/survival knives. The TFK reminds me of something straight out of the pages of G.I.Joe comics and its functional as hell so it got me good. Fantastic review!
I don't usually find the need to Baton logs in half, but I do button for kindling. I can do that on thinner pieces of wood with a pocket knife so something of this size is perfect for my general camp needs
Haha, I used to jump an Al Mar SERE VI all the time with almost exactly the same sheath. They do work, but yeah, not ideal. I used to have one of those knives and ended up grinding off the chisel end. I found it to be a good overall blae for a lot of different tasks. I eventually donated it to a friend of a friend in Sierra Leone. He is a former soldier who is currently giving it some good, hard use in the bush. I can't think of a more appropriate place for this blade.
Really good fair video. I would think a Kukri would be better but that does seem to have somethings going for it. Materials are good and that pot lifter is great. Just think there are better less expensive knives. Thanks for showing it.
I bought the unsharpened swedge offer in this knife when I was at Smoky Mountain knife works last year really like the knife, By the way anyone who hasn't been there, you"ll enjoy it , fun place and area
The dbad War Machine comes to mind, but there are so many great choices. If its just a fighting, stabby, stabby blade, almost anything with proper balance will do. Even the Hibben Highlander Bowie. What price point will narrow your options.
So I have bin buying some of those old Remington bullet knife's and some case knife's the hammer head the mako just need to get the case shark tooth knife may get one off eBay shark knife's r so cool ttyl
Great choice actually it is a one tool option your lack of skills limits the knife just work smarter not harder. Why do we need to go so big with our wood processes choices. With minimal wood you can create huge fires.🤔
If your house is surrounded by Zombies what would be your go to Zombie Knife for making rag dolls out of the Zombies, lol which "One" would it be! Most of the Zombies are also wearing bicycle helmets as as there was a race going on at the time.
Stabbing would be as important as hacking, but since its the brain we need to get to and they have helmets, I'd sacrifice the stabbing for more of a bone crusher and go with the dbad Mission IV
@@DonnieBAllDay dbad Gator Tail is what I would have chosen, the ability to tear right through and down, got that rope knife talon chiesl vibe to it - open sesame the magical phrase! I think your going to lose too much strike power over the blades length in dealing with the helmet and splitting the coconut underneath, I don't think I could do it whatsoever on a frosty Friday, probability cause i'm getting to old lol. It also has to get down in there where that primitive animal part is located.
Alright Alright so what I'm wondering is if you've ever been Donnie B only half a day or even just for a few hours instead of allllll day long 🤔🤷♂️🤣🤣🤣😝 haha love ya brother
Eyyyy you better not baton that log bro, I mean if it was a matter of having firewood or freezing to death yeah you should just move on and find a new log lmao NOTTTT tops whackkk straight thru "knot or not" 😝🤣😝

Thanks for explaining that notch... I never knew so ya gave me a wowser moment.
It comes in handy
@@DonnieBAllDay The Kukri has a similar groove which could be latching onto a pot handle
Ron Hood was a big proponent of the notch for that purpose. Which is why his Anaconda design for TOPS also has one.
