Outstanding review and display of real world testing of the Tahoma! That batton test was a great display of how well the heat treat is on this blade. Thanks for taking the time to do a awesome review of the Tahoma!
Just adding to the knowledge you've given those interested in the TFK. Thanks for your support, Wingman115!
Thanks for a great review, TWANGnBANG! Way to go on that last log!
I actually got through a log similar to that before, but this one had a knot at the top that stopped the knife cold.
I have been there many a time which is why I teach folks to make a hasty wedge before they split.. But that wouldn't show how strong the knife is or how studly and buff you are.
I believe it has been stressed, great work out for Andy's knife
Your facial expressions while batoning the Red Oak were PRICELESS! That is one TUFF ENUFF piece of equipment/tool. Thanks
The video didn't do my pounding justice. I was literally trying my best to break the knife with the baton, but I couldn't do it.
I think you need to give yourself credit for the production quality of your videos too. You always deliver high quality videos with excellent content. Keep up the great work.
Thanks so much!
You always make professional grade reviews. Keep up the good work
Great review. I agree with you 100% on this topic. Thanks for sharing your thoughts and experience on this awesome blade, I appreciate it.
Brad Barber Thanks for watching, Brad!
Great review! Informative and fun. Thanks. Best regards, Rob
I was laughing my ass off with you trying to split that log and then trying to remove it. But I just abour pissed myself when you said the knife had gone through five weeks of stupid. BTW bought one. Its a great knife.
Great review. Gonna order one now. Thanks
I have GOT to get me one of those. Right now my current big field knife is a chris reeve single billet knife and it's wonderful, but that thing looks to be much more useful for woodscraft
WHAT: Are U telling me the $9.87 hollow handled, fishing line wrapped, serrated back blade, with bottle opener, survival knife I got in 1966 was junk. Heck it lasted almost thru Boy Scout Camp. Enjoyed your video!!!
outstanding review...Thank You Sir
One of the better reviews of this knife I've seen, good work.....
dog11222 Thanks for watching!
An outstanding piece of kit.
I have one, Mumma Bear has one, and Baby Bear has one.
Can’t go wrong
Nice review, just ordered one.
You really punished that knife. I thought it was ugly when I first seen it, but I amazed, I want one!
Thanks for the great videos you do.
Outstanding knife video man. Keep up the good work, channel keeps getting better and better.
Thanks again for your support, kernisme!
Dude - I love InnerBark Outdoors channel, I found it about 3 weeks ago!
This is why I like you, we're on the same page, and you share cool stuff.
I stumbled across his old channel a few months ago and got in touch with him because his videos are so good. He will be one of the big channels before long.
I am a proud owner of the Tahoma Field Knife. Had mine for over a month now and absolutely love it. Been waiting for this review ever since PM 101 and Wingman115 did theirs. This blade is Tops! ;)
Glad you like it. Oh and Thanks for watching all our videos!
I hope it lived up to your anticipation. Thanks for watching!
It sure did! Keep up the great vids guys!
Looks like an great survival/utility tool.
Hey just found your channel. Really enjoying it. Hello from England!! Subscribed :)
Great! Thanks for sticking around.
The hole in the blade is very ingenious, used to pop out a small bullet and use the powder. Why didn't I think of that? And for me, when we camp and pack around, battoning is part of the fun experience, gets out all the aggression, and its just fun, and very good to know in an emergency!
Yes, I also enjoy batoning, but many knife people get bent out of shape seeing it in knife review videos. The great thing about batoning in a *survival* situation is that, though it takes more calories, it is much safer than swinging an ax or hatchet.
Andy is a cool guy. He designed a great knife
Great review! Great knife!
Thanks for watching!
Been watching your youtube channel for a while now and I was really impressed with this knife. I have been looking for something like it for a while now. My wife has just informed me that I will be getting one as a birthday gift. She is such a good woman. Keep up the good work, I will keep watching.
That's awesome!!
Great video! Tops does make a darn good knife, and I've been eyeing one of these since Andy first showed the prototype on his channel several months ago! Just as an addendum, Tops will make this knife with just a false edge on top for anyone who doesn't like the idea of having a sharpened top edge.
Andy is going to have to confirm this again. TOPS might have had a change of heart because of how fast they are selling as-is. I got mixed messages from TOPS when I recently spoke to them about the false edge.
wait, you just batoned a baton to baton out a batoned blade out of a piece of wood...... awesome!
Great review and demo. I just received MI e. It will get a beating come deer season. Love the edge retention. This knife as u say. Will c some stupid. Love your reviews
drtracyst Thanks for watching!
In the piedmont nc region as well. Keep up the great work.
Thanks for watching!
awsome review...i've heard nothing but good stuff about that knife
It really won me over.
I originally subscribed for your guns, but videos like these really fascinate me, as I've never lived outside of the stifling metropolitan area.
Thank you for introducing me to Andy Tran as well!
I'd rather have this knife than the recent Chinese Army shovel everyone's clambering about (as long as I'm not digging anything!). Will we be seeing a TwangnBang Knife anytime soon?
Funny you mention the ChiCom shovel- I have one to make a fun video comparing it to a USGI e-tool. :)
I am no knife designer- I'll leave that to guys like Andy. :)
Great video! I just subscribed to ya!
I would have tried to baton the piece of wood that you were using as a baton...
That piece of wood looked solid as a rock!!!
Just got mine! Nice review.
lukenburg Still love mine!
Great review. I've seen lesser blades come away with more pieces than they started with from gentler beatings than that.
I wanted to settle the "it will break like the Buck Hoodlum" argument right out of the gate. I hope I did just that.
Thanks for watching!
Great video.
Thanks
Thanks for watching!
Man, I don't like fire arms that much and I am more on the liberal spectrum when it comes to gun safty, but your channel is truly awesome and you are hands down one of the most charismatic CZcamsr out there.
Joshua Albrecht Thanks so much!
Wow, boy you exerted such stress on that blade hitting repeatedly and it still did great, not a bad blade at all. The more videos I look the more convinced I seem to be about TOPS knives.
Yes. I never work so hard to baton wood other than what I did for this test. I just used the TFK this past weekend camping in the Blue Ridge mountains, and it's still going strong.
Just purchased one...awesome knife...gunna upgrade scales to Black Canvas RMT by Top's...with a Kydex sheath...
What a beating!!!!! Subbed to your channel...
mackmcnasty27 Thanks for sticking around!
yeeah his intro vid clearly shows Andy's got some film chops for sure.
TOPS knives makes great tools, my favorite is the Tahoma Field Knife.
+Ghostginthree Mine, too!
I'm loving all the 'twang' stuff. And I have to say, nice knife tests as well!
I'm on the fence as to weather I should go for the Tahoma, or a Silent hero. This is what put me there. It would be nice to see your evaluation of a Silent Hero, if I can't get my hands on one before I buy.
TheMan The TFK is so versatile. The Silent Hero is a great knife, but much more of a basic, really big knife.
TWANGnBANG so it looks like it carries well, and I am not apposed to a little heavier knife. As long as the handle balances with the blade in that choked up position, it should be alright. Do you feel that the hand positioning could in effect make this a good 6" knife replacement in the way it handles those type of finer tasks?
Great review. I already know this knife and Andy Tran , both of which are great.
Other You Tube reviews of the Tahoma are 2-3 times longer than yours and less informative. Any wonder why those channels don't do as well as yours?
Continue the great wok!
Tradron (Ron Sanders MD)
Thanks, Tradron!
Love the knife. Absolutely hate the notching on the top.
I would def get one but double sided blades are illegal to carry in MA.:(. I could always dull the back edge
You actually might be able to order this from TOPS with a false top edge. Call them and ask.
That's a really useful hammer you have there
i've been thinking about this knife for a while and after seeing you try to pound it thru a piece of gnarly red oak just now, that's it: i'm buying one! definitely like this video!
KingTesticus Still my favorite all-around outdoors knife. You'll love it.
TWANGnBANG
not liking that sheath. for the amount of money they're asking, a high-end knife should also come with a high-end sheath. but i suppose i could make my own.
KingTesticus I got a custom leatherlined kydex for my Tahoma from Rush Customs, makes all the difference in the world! Now this amazing knife has a sheath worthy of it
COWBOYJDUB
i made the purchase from Andy Tran's website a few days ago and have been educating myself on the process so i can make my own sheath. i was informed by Andy he intends to ship it within a week... i'm psyched! i have a bushcraft knife, and a hatchet, and a pocket knife AND a multitool that i carry around when i go on extended camping excursions. but i'm imagining only the multitool and the TFK. this won't be much of a reduction weight-wise, but definitely bulk-wise. fewer items. now if only i can resist the temptation to fill in the new void with some other "thing."
take care out there :-)
I like it... only things I might change would be to add some traction milling to the handle scales and maybe poke some holes somewhere in the blade or handles to allow lashing to a stick for a makeshift spear. 1095 is a good choice on the steel, if I had a little more leeway with the cost I might go 3V.
There are two lashing holes as it is- one on the blade and one near the pommel. Plus, you have a very deep choil and a very deep finger groove on the grip. This is plenty easy to lash to a stick, actually.
I've used this every day for over a month in rain, snow, sweat... I haven't found the grip to be lacking any texture. The Micarta is quite gritty, in a good way.
Batoning from hell. Hilarious.
I thought that either the oak or the knife would break, but the battle ended in a stalemate. :)
It looks like you struggled on that red oak but you did good
so what knife do you like better the Hablis SRT, or the THK?
Paul Barlow Great question. The TFK is definitely more versatile. The SRT is going to have the edge on overall sturdiness. Just depends upon what your priorities are.
I recently watched this and your other video testing the KA-BAR Becker BK2 and was wondering which you would recommend for multi-day backpacking excursions.
PhotonChief The TFK, by far. That's what it was designed for, and its versatility will be a big plus as a one-tool option for multi-day excursions.
Thanks for the reply, I'll keep that in mind! I really enjoy your videos.
does it have a 90 degree spine for debarking and ferro rod use?
Bob Holzman Yep.
what part of North Carolina did he say
Can you use this knife for throwing as well if you wanted to?
Andy answered this below, but it is not a throwing knife, and this will void the warranty.
Hello good afternoon I have a question about the tool tahoma is really good knife since I want to buy one and I would like to know your opinion thanks.
Yes, that is what I show in the video. Great knife that I recommend. See link in video description for where to buy.
I have to be honest, without that sharpened upper edge, you could have used more of the rear portion of the blade with the log. Allowing you to baton on the rear portion of the spine for most of the work. And then hit the forward portion to help the blade go down level with the log.
Being able to do that a few times.... I think the knife would have gotten through that log. It's a real benefit that the TFK is now available with that top edge unsharpened.
Looks like an awesome knife, out of my price range though
It's a manually intensive knife to make, but that's why it works so well.
I have watched all the reviews for this knife from preparedmind101 wingman115 innerbark and I have to say I believe this will be my FIRST out doors knife... In the near future.... Ps. Subscribed to all by the way -.0
This could easily also be your LAST outdoors knife. It is a fantastic design.
Thanks for subscribing!
Looks like you got a good workout :D
I woke up sore yesterday and couldn't figure out why, at first. :)
Look at your Y/T video and you should remember very quickly! What a workout!
:D
You mention blade is differentially heat treated, are all Tops knives done this way, Tops seems to have many 9-10" blades they bill as survival blades, like Myke Hawke's, etc. Thank U for a good informative vid….
I'm not really sure which knives are and which aren't. I do know that this is something they're very good at.
All of their knives are heat treated this way from their 1" to their machetes. They take great pride in it.
I should say you did just that!
Thanks for watching!
I was cringing watching you do that without gloves. looks like an awesome blade!
It's OK. My hands came with gloves of skin from the factory. :)
I have an idea for a video series you should make, call it walmart quality and buy an AR-15 from Walmart, all accessories you want to put on it, cleaning supplies you want to clean it with, and ammo from Walmart. It doesn't matter what brand, but it has to be from Walmart. Then document everything about the setup, pros, cons failures and what caused them and so on. I think it should make a great video or series.
Thanks.
Sounds like a great idea.
So ... the Tahoma or the Tex Creek XL?
seattwa The TFK is more versatile and gets my vote.
I agree 100% w/ Wingman 115; Also, too add 1 more comment. Has this knife or Is it going to be Field tested w/our military, in Real World field Ops ?
Some units might replace their general issue blades with this on an individual basis. I have been sent photos of the TFK from around the world, but none so far of it downrange
I showed this knife to a friend who is SF just last week, and he said guys pack whatever they want, but it was a bit big for a sandbox combat knife. It's length made it really hard to figure out where it would live on a typical load-out. He would love to see a scaled down version, though.
Did u buy your knife from Amazon?
As I said in the video, it was a traveling review knife. You can indeed buy it from Amazon at the link in the video, however.
does look perfect for throwing, was it also made for throwing?
It was not made for throwing and will void the warranty. Not saying its bad for throwing...just not advised.
oh, cool
Now thats a manly knife
that knife is gorgeous
It really is, though I have no problems beating on it. Mine will not be a "safe queen."
TWANGnBANG ye, a knife has to be usable otherwise its just a piece metal and just like a person it's the attributes and the "personality" that matters the most
watching these vids makes me feel bad about living in australia
I knew for a fact that you were NOT getting that knife through that log... ;)) Even if you used the front for impact. You could shave small pieces off to eat away at the log, but right down the center was not happening. Oak is a booger for splitting in general. Good review of the knife.
I've gotten through a few logs similar to that one before, but that had two big knots in it. I didn't have any other red oak, so I just went with it. It turned out to be a better demo of the knife than if I actually got through it.
Lmao 😂
Perhaps Andy meant a slightly less stout piece of redwood there bud. Just a thought.
i have one the sheath is shit and ruined my blade and rounded of the tip the plastic is a cheap as they come and the velcrow lasts about a week if you get this knife you will need to buy a custom sheath or risk ruining your blade.
where are you at in nc
Rick Will Wake Co
im in Randolph you have really cool videos.
you know thats how big foot communicates right. you've probably called in every 1 of them in 100 miles lol. but seriously this is 1 knife i really would like to buy if i could afford it. its almost the perfect knife in my eyes. but i dont think the perfect knife could be created due to reliability issues. if your wondering i love everything about this except i would like a hollowed out metal handle with a screw on compass and enough room in the handle for 3 - 5 small strike anywhere matches or a fire rod attached to the screw on compass. but still be as durable and still have the bow drill indention. that would eliminate a lot of kit and make the knife priceless to me.
as for a sheath id like to see 2 pockets added big enough for 2 pencil torches. but then again i kind of like to spread out the weight around my belt or in my pack. dunno if id want that much weight on 1 side, however it might help balance out the weight of my pistol so its a toss up for me really.
that might be overkill wanting so much stuff to make a fire. but i know in the winter without fire, stuff can get really bad really fast even more so at night. in my area i live at the foot of 2 mountains. and it gets REALLY cold there. you can walk 100 feet and fell the temp drop 15 or so degrees. and i want to be damn sure i can make a fire. if something happens and i cant walk out before the sun goes down.
maybe someday i'll be rich and have a knife custom made for me. but until then i will lust after this 1.
did you try the fire rod on the knife if so did it work or do you know if it would work?
I did try the rod with the knife, but it's just easier to use the smaller starter. I used the breaker notch, and sparks flew.
There is already talk of a few sheath makers offering custom sheaths for this knife, so you might be able to get what you want soon. You'll still need to get the knife as-is, and who knows, you might find a way to make the single pouch work for you in the meantime.
As far as the hollow handle, etc., that kind of design would never survive what I did to this knife. The full tang really makes this knife much stronger.
Wish they would feature that knife on an episode of The Walking Dead. Would be a great way to take out a zombie's brain!
I thought about stabbing a watermelon with it, but that will have to wait for another video.
I like it, but the one thing missing from many field knife reviews is game processing. If I am only carrying one knife around, that is a very important aspect of the knife to me.
Er... Maybe carry one field knife and one small knife for game processing. I tried to process a deer with a K-Bar once, and though I did it, it just kept getting in its own way.
The practical matter for review is multifold:
1. You can't just summon fresh game every time you do a review.
2. Though you do indeed see many videos of game processing and hunting on CZcams, CZcams won't approve them for the partner program.
Andy Tran did show some hide scraping in one of his TFK videos. I'll see if he can answer the game processing question for you.
Field dressed and quartered 2 deer during prototyping. Only thing you need to do different is shove 2 fingers in to push down the guts and cut between the fingers to make sure you dont cut anything you dont want to with a double edge. After that its the same as with any other knife. I will get a video done this fall of the process.
I deal with moose mostly, so a large knife is very useful.
I hate fully serrated knives- but I still feel a survival knife- should have at least a partial seration on the blade or spine
i wnt 1
How thick is the blade on this bad boy?
+DEEZ NUTTZ 3/16"
+DEEZ NUTTZ are 3/16" thick.
I really like that knife but for me its just to expensive
8:45 that look when a knife is to tough
... YOu are a fucking salesman! I was satisfied with what I have but now... WTF?! I GOTTA HAVE THIS KNIFE!!!
To really test the durability, baton it through the red oak with a hammer!
The problem is that if it broke, it wouldn't prove that the blade is weak, yet many viewers would see it that way. Plus, I just broke a $300 knife for nothing. :)
What I did was plenty to show the knife will handle anything it could be expected to do. There are plenty of videos showing knives breaking with much less stress than I subjected it to.
TWANGnBANG lol! I see your point on that! But it would still be entertaining to watch the knife getting battened with a hammer even though how durable it is to begin with! But like I said, you still got a good point. :)
Andy 'Tran'... is he part Vietnamese?
+냄새꾸리꾸리한 발까락 Yes.
u tried to split that red oak the wrong way, the direction perpendicular to that would have been significantly easier.
if this knife was built to Baton why does it have that top Edge I wouldn't not want that top Edge on my botanning knife
Say Heah, I like Andy, I think he's a stand up guy. But I have a knife that is very similar to his that was designed way before his and it's also a very popular knife with us Busskin's. Tup it's the Ratweiler, It doesn't have a sharpensd Swege , But even the handle is similar. I'm sure Andy didn't copy his from the Ratweiker, Because Andy is a stand up giy and wouldn't. But the feature's would fit to the shape thus the simikariry. My Ratweiler is 7 3/4" from tip to handle it's a wide blade and mine is the 1;4" version. Yeah it's my Fav. One Tool Option although I teamed mine in a vertical piggyback with my Rodent Solution. Add a Saw and Bingo Bango, Blip, Blap, Blam, Easy Peasy , Nice and Easy, and that's all folk's. ,, .
The only thing that knife has in common with the TFK is that they're both knives with edges. Countless knives look just like the Ratweiler with no difference in features.
Well to me if they look similar they are similar, Sure my Ratweiler doesn't have a sharpened swege, But it's beefier too and well balanced that for a large knife, it's very fluid and managable. But my selling point is the fantastic steel. For the $$$ you get your Twang and Bang for the $$$. ,, .
Then the Ratweiler is a copy of knives that look similar that came before it. There not a single feature original on it at all.
True that, All concepts have been done already, It's just like car's, four wheel's a steering wheel gass paddle and brakes, The other disign is what catches the buyer, no different with knives. sure some thing's put them in certain task catagories, But you can alway's tell it's a knife. Again, That Tohoma remind's me of my Ratweiler which if I'm not mistaken, it was designed first.,,.
I liked that you can actually grab the knife with two hands if needed. I have this knife and look forward to abusing it.
The knife with the double blade looks dangerous like an accident is waiting to happen.
k
You were very closed to hurt yourself while batonning. Please wear some gloves next time, will be much more safer. Nice knife by the way, way to big in my opinion but every people has his own needs, thanks for the video.
thats bad luck putting your knife downward like thaat
Daniel Esparza I'm not superstitious in any way.
i am a native american and in my culture it is
