    Outstanding review and display of real world testing of the Tahoma! That batton test was a great display of how well the heat treat is on this blade. Thanks for taking the time to do a awesome review of the Tahoma!

      I have been there many a time which is why I teach folks to make a hasty wedge before they split.. But that wouldn't show how strong the knife is or how studly and buff you are.

    The hole in the blade is very ingenious, used to pop out a small bullet and use the powder. Why didn't I think of that? And for me, when we camp and pack around, battoning is part of the fun experience, gets out all the aggression, and its just fun, and very good to know in an emergency!

    • @TWANGnBANG
      @TWANGnBANG  Před 10 lety

      Yes, I also enjoy batoning, but many knife people get bent out of shape seeing it in knife review videos. The great thing about batoning in a *survival* situation is that, though it takes more calories, it is much safer than swinging an ax or hatchet.

    Great video! Tops does make a darn good knife, and I've been eyeing one of these since Andy first showed the prototype on his channel several months ago! Just as an addendum, Tops will make this knife with just a false edge on top for anyone who doesn't like the idea of having a sharpened top edge.

    • @TWANGnBANG
      @TWANGnBANG  Před 10 lety

      Andy is going to have to confirm this again. TOPS might have had a change of heart because of how fast they are selling as-is. I got mixed messages from TOPS when I recently spoke to them about the false edge.

    I'm on the fence as to weather I should go for the Tahoma, or a Silent hero. This is what put me there. It would be nice to see your evaluation of a Silent Hero, if I can't get my hands on one before I buy.

    • @TWANGnBANG
      @TWANGnBANG  Před 9 lety

    • @mclifed
      @mclifed Před 9 lety

      TWANGnBANG so it looks like it carries well, and I am not apposed to a little heavier knife. As long as the handle balances with the blade in that choked up position, it should be alright. Do you feel that the hand positioning could in effect make this a good 6" knife replacement in the way it handles those type of finer tasks?

  • @tradron

      COWBOYJDUB
      i made the purchase from Andy Tran's website a few days ago and have been educating myself on the process so i can make my own sheath. i was informed by Andy he intends to ship it within a week... i'm psyched! i have a bushcraft knife, and a hatchet, and a pocket knife AND a multitool that i carry around when i go on extended camping excursions. but i'm imagining only the multitool and the TFK. this won't be much of a reduction weight-wise, but definitely bulk-wise. fewer items. now if only i can resist the temptation to fill in the new void with some other "thing."
      take care out there :-)

  • @WillMoon
    @WillMoon Před 10 lety

    I like it... only things I might change would be to add some traction milling to the handle scales and maybe poke some holes somewhere in the blade or handles to allow lashing to a stick for a makeshift spear. 1095 is a good choice on the steel, if I had a little more leeway with the cost I might go 3V.

    • @TWANGnBANG
      @TWANGnBANG  Před 10 lety

      There are two lashing holes as it is- one on the blade and one near the pommel. Plus, you have a very deep choil and a very deep finger groove on the grip. This is plenty easy to lash to a stick, actually.
      I've used this every day for over a month in rain, snow, sweat... I haven't found the grip to be lacking any texture. The Micarta is quite gritty, in a good way.

  • @NGMonocrom
    @NGMonocrom Před 5 lety

    I have to be honest, without that sharpened upper edge, you could have used more of the rear portion of the blade with the log. Allowing you to baton on the rear portion of the spine for most of the work. And then hit the forward portion to help the blade go down level with the log.
    Being able to do that a few times.... I think the knife would have gotten through that log. It's a real benefit that the TFK is now available with that top edge unsharpened.

It doesn't matter what brand, but it has to be from Walmart. Then document everything about the setup, pros, cons failures and what caused them and so on. I think it should make a great video or series.

    I knew for a fact that you were NOT getting that knife through that log... ;)) Even if you used the front for impact. You could shave small pieces off to eat away at the log, but right down the center was not happening. Oak is a booger for splitting in general. Good review of the knife.

    • @TWANGnBANG
      @TWANGnBANG  Před 10 lety

      I've gotten through a few logs similar to that one before, but that had two big knots in it. I didn't have any other red oak, so I just went with it. It turned out to be a better demo of the knife than if I actually got through it.

    you know thats how big foot communicates right. you've probably called in every 1 of them in 100 miles lol. but seriously this is 1 knife i really would like to buy if i could afford it. its almost the perfect knife in my eyes. but i dont think the perfect knife could be created due to reliability issues. if your wondering i love everything about this except i would like a hollowed out metal handle with a screw on compass and enough room in the handle for 3 - 5 small strike anywhere matches or a fire rod attached to the screw on compass. but still be as durable and still have the bow drill indention. that would eliminate a lot of kit and make the knife priceless to me.
    as for a sheath id like to see 2 pockets added big enough for 2 pencil torches. but then again i kind of like to spread out the weight around my belt or in my pack. dunno if id want that much weight on 1 side, however it might help balance out the weight of my pistol so its a toss up for me really.
    that might be overkill wanting so much stuff to make a fire. but i know in the winter without fire, stuff can get really bad really fast even more so at night. in my area i live at the foot of 2 mountains. and it gets REALLY cold there. you can walk 100 feet and fell the temp drop 15 or so degrees. and i want to be damn sure i can make a fire. if something happens and i cant walk out before the sun goes down.
    maybe someday i'll be rich and have a knife custom made for me. but until then i will lust after this 1.
    did you try the fire rod on the knife if so did it work or do you know if it would work?

    • @TWANGnBANG
      @TWANGnBANG  Před 10 lety +1

      I did try the rod with the knife, but it's just easier to use the smaller starter. I used the breaker notch, and sparks flew.
      There is already talk of a few sheath makers offering custom sheaths for this knife, so you might be able to get what you want soon. You'll still need to get the knife as-is, and who knows, you might find a way to make the single pouch work for you in the meantime.
      As far as the hollow handle, etc., that kind of design would never survive what I did to this knife. The full tang really makes this knife much stronger.

    I like it, but the one thing missing from many field knife reviews is game processing. If I am only carrying one knife around, that is a very important aspect of the knife to me.

    • @TWANGnBANG
      @TWANGnBANG  Před 10 lety

      Er... Maybe carry one field knife and one small knife for game processing. I tried to process a deer with a K-Bar once, and though I did it, it just kept getting in its own way.
      The practical matter for review is multifold:
      1. You can't just summon fresh game every time you do a review.
      2. Though you do indeed see many videos of game processing and hunting on CZcams, CZcams won't approve them for the partner program.
      Andy Tran did show some hide scraping in one of his TFK videos. I'll see if he can answer the game processing question for you.

      Field dressed and quartered 2 deer during prototyping. Only thing you need to do different is shove 2 fingers in to push down the guts and cut between the fingers to make sure you dont cut anything you dont want to with a double edge. After that its the same as with any other knife. I will get a video done this fall of the process.

    To really test the durability, baton it through the red oak with a hammer!

    • @TWANGnBANG
      @TWANGnBANG  Před 10 lety +1

      The problem is that if it broke, it wouldn't prove that the blade is weak, yet many viewers would see it that way. Plus, I just broke a $300 knife for nothing. :)
      What I did was plenty to show the knife will handle anything it could be expected to do. There are plenty of videos showing knives breaking with much less stress than I subjected it to.

    • @julien6541
      @julien6541 Před 10 lety

      TWANGnBANG lol! I see your point on that! But it would still be entertaining to watch the knife getting battened with a hammer even though how durable it is to begin with! But like I said, you still got a good point. :)

    Say Heah, I like Andy, I think he's a stand up guy. But I have a knife that is very similar to his that was designed way before his and it's also a very popular knife with us Busskin's. Tup it's the Ratweiler, It doesn't have a sharpensd Swege , But even the handle is similar. I'm sure Andy didn't copy his from the Ratweiker, Because Andy is a stand up giy and wouldn't. But the feature's would fit to the shape thus the simikariry. My Ratweiler is 7 3/4" from tip to handle it's a wide blade and mine is the 1;4" version. Yeah it's my Fav. One Tool Option although I teamed mine in a vertical piggyback with my Rodent Solution. Add a Saw and Bingo Bango, Blip, Blap, Blam, Easy Peasy , Nice and Easy, and that's all folk's. ,, .

    • @TWANGnBANG
      @TWANGnBANG  Před 7 lety

      The only thing that knife has in common with the TFK is that they're both knives with edges. Countless knives look just like the Ratweiler with no difference in features.

    • @paulie4x1
      @paulie4x1 Před 7 lety

      Well to me if they look similar they are similar, Sure my Ratweiler doesn't have a sharpened swege, But it's beefier too and well balanced that for a large knife, it's very fluid and managable. But my selling point is the fantastic steel. For the $$$ you get your Twang and Bang for the $$$. ,, .

    • @TWANGnBANG
      @TWANGnBANG  Před 7 lety

      Then the Ratweiler is a copy of knives that look similar that came before it. There not a single feature original on it at all.

      True that, All concepts have been done already, It's just like car's, four wheel's a steering wheel gass paddle and brakes, The other disign is what catches the buyer, no different with knives. sure some thing's put them in certain task catagories, But you can alway's tell it's a knife. Again, That Tohoma remind's me of my Ratweiler which if I'm not mistaken, it was designed first.,,.
