- The TOPS Tahoma Field Knife, designed by Andy Tran, is one of the best one tool option, survival knives I know of. It does everything a survival knife needs to do and does it very well. Andy did an excellent job on this design and TOPS does a first class job on the production end. The fit and finish is excellent.
You absolutely cannot go wrong with this knife. It is both beauty and the beast wrapped up in one carbon steel and micarta package. I recommend buying directly from Andy's website.

Good review. Silhouette kind of reminds me of a Buck Hoodlum, but that bayonet point looks much stronger than the Hoodlum's clip point.

I bought the TFK directly from Andy's site, got it ship to me here in Cancun Mexico. I use the knife quite a bit in the yucatan jungle, mostly for processing wood for whatever shore I'm getting done around the campsite. I like how the knife looks and I like all the different ways you can grip the Knife.
Comes in 1095 steel with the stonewashed finished. Very good for batonin and chopping is good as well. I will be honest about the main thing I dont like and that is that it never felt like I was holding a knife in my hand. I felt like I was holding a heavy tool, the handle feels squarish if that makes sense. I wish the handle was more like a normal handle...I still have the knife, and I still use it and enjoy the other good things about it but I tend to use my BK9 a little more. I recommend using good well cushion gloves to avoid or minimize the awkard squarish feeling also keep in mind the double edge when batonin, might wanna go without it you feel it gets in the way...for me it did, but it's nothing you can't live with. Plus it makes for a great spear if you one. I give the TFK a 4 out of 5

I recieved my TFK I ordered from Andy's web site. It is worth every penny and then some. I love it. It is the blade I now keep straped to my go bag. It took the place of my tomahawk because of it's versatility. I do carry a smaller knife (5" blade) also for small tasks. But I am a huge fan of the TFK.
Good review of a great knife. Always baton with the log on a solid surface, so not to lose some of the energy to the soft ground.

I have owned a TFK for six, going on seven years. Are you planning to do a follow-up video?
After teaching myself how to make kydex sheaths, I made an under-the-arm sheath with very strong retention and carried the TFK EDC-style for a whole year. It was a bit bulky, but I quickly got used to it and it's totally doable. Had to wear a long sleeve button down shirt all the time, like a jacket, to make sure it was concealed during those times when I was in less wooded, more "populated" areas. To eliminate the "fear factor," but again, it is totally doable.
Anyway, your review makes me feel that new feeling again when I had just bought my knife.

Nice functional beast of a knife. TOPS Knives are some of the best put together knives out there and super tough. Own a TOPS UTE #2 and used to own a Tom Brown Trekker Scout. Good hard test batoning that stubborn piece of wood. Poplar may be a softer wood when live , but when dry it can become very rigged but still remain fairly flexible almost springy. As a kid I used to make bows and arrows out of poplar. Lol. Thanks for the video. There's not enuff vids out there for TOPS Knives. Especially for how good they are.

You can get it with a false edge on top instead of the double edge.
Yes that'll be a must due to our insane knife laws over here. I live on the south coast of Devon, between the sea and the high moors. There's no earthly reason for laws to be so stringent but that's the UK for you. Having done some digging there's a company here marketing the knife at £190. (a little over $300) which isn't too bad a mark up by UK standards. It's a shame I can't buy direct from Andy though as it would be nice to support his work directly. Thanks for the review, it's all but made up my mind.
I don't know much about import/export laws, but you might send Andy a message on his Facebook page and see if he can sell you a knife. It can't hurt to ask.

***** I know Andy used a piece of cedar about that big for a baton in one of his videos but he must be just tougher than me. It was making my arm tired. It also made it harder to hit close enough to the log to keep the handle from pivoting down. And it was making my arm tired ;-)

I have watched your videos many times and have learned a lot from you. Thank you so much. 1 negative you pick he worse trees to show chopping skills. There is no way in a survival situation that I would ever cut those hard dry tree with all the other trees in the woods. You are burning way to many calories for a survival situation. I still enjoy your vids.
I don't pick the trees to show skills but rather to demonstrate the capabilities of the knife. I like that you understand that choices can be critical in survival situations and the most important survival tool you have is your mind
Well, Brian, I'm still saving for mine. That is going to make you a great primary knife, especially backed up with you BOB. What a great combo. As you said not cheap, but well worth the money.

Survival On Purpose I have a Tops Tahoma Field Knife. I have to agree with everything you said EXCEPT that it is NOT the Chuck Norris of knives. My TFK will not cut all the way through a piece of railroad track and it isn't that accurate at 100 yds. when thrown. (lol) Other than that, it is absolutely the handiest field/camp/hunting/survival tool I have. Andy Tran has definitely earned a place among noted knife designers.

Hello good afternoon I have a question about the tool tahoma is really good knife since I want to buy one and I would like to know your opinion thanks.
It is an excellent knife.
Some Bushcrafters say that a Scandi grind works best for making feather sticks.. I have been using a flat grind with good results.. One other knife i own has a saber grind not quite as well at feather sticking.. Do you think the blade grind is important enough to buy the knife or not? In other words , everything about the knife meets and exceeds your needs but the grind is not what you want, would it stop you from buying the knife?
I always try to ask myself 2 questions: 1) would I have even asked this question before Google and the Internet 2) Does whatever I am considering meet my needs. Bottom line, while information can be a good thing, I think it may also cause us to overthink decisions sometimes.
Brian that is so true... So many choices ,so little time.. Thanks to the internet.. Confused, i wasn't but am now, what should i do?... So many grind angles, gawd which one? What am i going to use it for? Well wood , next what am i making out of wood? I like the old days, one ax , one knife does it all... Well 55 years ago it did for me as that's about all there was... I have this book on tools of Hudson Bay Trappers, they worked with what they had to survive , no stores, no roads and no cell phones to bail you out... I do not own a blade that has the Scandi grind and the more clips i watch , i feel that would be a good choice for me... In the last 7 months i have one high saber grind, and one low saber grind, i like them both... Fine wood work one is better than the other the high saber grind is almost a flat grind, maybe not the best for feather sticks but it does work...

They are both 1095 steel. TOPS uses a differential heat treatment on these blades. The edge is typically a little harder than the spine

Batoning is easier if you place the base of the piece on top of something hard like another small log - Beating it into the ground is like the piece having a shock absorber under it

only problems i see are the exposed pommel, which they tend to impact the lower palm while chopping, that and the sheath sucks...woods
MTwoodsrunner The pommel doesn't bother me, and I have used this one quite a bit. The handle is big enough and shaped so you don't have to grab it at the very end to get good leverage. as for the sheath, it is functional. I actually like the extra pocket. I keep a fire steel, a Live Fire fire starter and a small neck knife in mine. But...stay tuned because I have a Kydex sheath coming to test out. Sheath or not, this is one of my absolute favorite knives. Period!

i personally have not met a knife with an exposed tang that did not bite my pinky or palm while choking back during chopping.

MTwoodsrunner the curve of the handle and the cut away of the prybar keeps the exposed pry bar away from your palm, it is not a problem at all, in any way, whatsoever :)

Did this knife go through the guantlet.
No it did not. I don't think anybody who owns one is willing to give it up. They did pass one around a few people when they first came out. I will say that I think almost everybody in the gauntlet owns one, if that tells you anything.
What sharpener do you use for this knife?
Cody L I have several different ones. I honestly haven't had to spend too much time on the edge. The heat treat is excellent.

As for the scorrring thing.. Well I dunno, I usually joint stuff, which sure it takes longer but hey the bone pretty much pops.
The only thing left in this is probably the kitchen sink.
The scoring notch works great with a ferro rod.
I don't understand people's objections to using a baton. I've been doing it for decades and I've broken exactly one knife.
That sharpened top rdge completely changes the way you baton it looked hard not being able to use the end of the knife to hit

WoW Brian your stepping up, nice knife, I like the design and almost got one bit that double sharp edge was the breaking point I do sometimes baton through wood, I saw a fella that actually showed us how he baton with the Tahoma but I don't know so I saved up a little more and went with the Busse Nuclear Meltdown Fussion Steel Heart awesome, not that tge Tahoma isn't a good knife, what I like about it it's a one tool option a 1knife carry that intrigued me that's why I got the Lueku also a one tool option, but then I got to thinking and now my larger knife is on person when we're in the bush as long as it has a choil and hold's a great edge and not too heavy, a beast of a knife the sharpened hammer my O.K.C. Gen2 SP-53 but a tich too heavy to carry on person, but I tried it and ended up just carrying a neck knife with it, if I molle attac it I can take a mid size knife too, but I might still buy the Tahoma and see if it could work for me as a one tool option, Thanx for tge video.
You can get it without the sharpened secondary edge.

And that's an interesting thought because of all the features this knife has nobody has even once talked about it's combat applications. Now without putting my hands on one "yet" because it's on order but isn't here yet, I would say that between the dual edges, the length, and the fact that it appears that your hand wouldn't slip up, that it "should" work well in that regard, in fact it would be more then up to the task. Maybe Brian can get his hands wet, take it outside and do some stabbing with it and report back. I'd personally like to know how it felt for such a task.
I guess I'm just a little picky but when I'm going to spend money like that on a knife that's the way it's going to be. I think over all it's a great knife but I don't like a blade on the top and I don't like that curved handle. I know if I bought it directly from tops they could take care of that blade issue but everything from them direct is double the price you would spend somewhere else.
That handle us curved for a purpose. Less wear and tear on the wrist.
Bryan; have you seen the Tops Dragonfly?
The dragonfly looks like the BOB WITHOUT THAT HORRIBLE COATING.
I just wish the dragonfly came with Kydex instead of nylon sheath.
Andy can take care if the blade issue too. He can get you a false edge on top and even snaps instead of Velcro on the sheath retention. And the curved handle is for better ergonomics when chopping. But if it's not for you that's cool too. I just do my beat to give everything a thorough test and review so folks can make informed decisions. But, as for me after using this for just a few weeks, I think this might be one of the best all around knife designs ever created. Of course, that's just my humble opinion but the knife did every task I used it for exceptionally well from chopping to fine carving. OK, I'll quit gushing over the knife. Can you tell I like it?

Good review. TOPS did indeed do a good job but I don't at all like the notches in the blade spine. Useless for most purposes( wire cutting/sawing??--use Leatherman instead!) , potentially very unsafe for hand/fingers, tears up wood hammer when batoning...in summary, a useless ugly addition to what could have been a great knife design.
You didn't test the top short edge or blade sharpness. Now take a rest.
Chisel / screwdriver on the end.
Say Heah Brian, Yeah, My Ratweiler is very similar even the handle but the Ratweiler has a palm swell.
this vid would actually convince more people to not buy it, i think. hate that double edge, and curved handle. the whole thing seems impractical. where's the benefit of the extra money spent? you could get more out of a knife that costs half as much. big knife doesn't equal good knife.

So you like this one better than the B.O.B, Yeah I could see why, I really like the design especially how Andy designed that double edge up front and how he intended to use it as a edge saver and a or a functioning other knife, and that pot lifter off a fire is sort of kewl too, a 1knife carry is tempting, but I just got so use to a 2knife carry, well actually you know I like my Wicked Tough Saw made by Wicked Tree Gear and my 2Hawks Double Bit Hatchet, so my go to knives as for example I would carry my Rodent 7 on person, if your best knife is the one you have on you, I try to make sure my larger knife is on me, it's a very robust tough knife and really it's still very managable to carry, the Rodent 4 is the other knife I like pairing up in this combo, I attach it to my pack, I like choils, and both of our knives have them, a larger knife ofcource is best for chopping, but then it has more weight to carry, that's why I've been testing this combo out for me, although the Indigenous Saame People use their Leuku as a 1knife carry, but it's lighter and I don't think a Leuku will out chop my Rodent 9, anyhow Yeah without that sharp upper edge it's something I will consider even though I'm going against Andy's design and I believe his intention on using that upper edge is a good idea, but I noticed how you would of liked having more realestate when you were batoning, besides my 2Hawks Double Bit Hatchet is very compact and weighs about as much as that Tahoma but it's like a lightweight that punches like a heavyweight, I think a small hatchet will do a little better than a knife, although I noticed the nice chunks you were throwing when you chopped with your Tahoma, I like my set up a Saw, Hatchet, and Knife/Knives, on shorter trips I go with a 1knife carry, like my Modde Rodent 6 or when I go light, a Bravo 1 or my Benchmade Bushcrafter #162, or any similar knife and I have a few, I enjoy testing them and then making a post, I really enjoy your down to earth honesty, Thanx Brian.

Believe me Brian, I know you will love it, but when you do get it get the combo, it's the saw with the sheath, and it's a good one too, you can carry the saw in the open possition, with the Silky sometime you can bend the blade because it only cut's in one direction, with the Wicked Tough Saw it cut's in both, it's tempered great too and you can even light chop with it, it's that tough, it's pricy but we'll worth it, I especially got it for my light compact carry, that 2Hawks Double Bit Hatchet is a great Lil ' Chopper too, I have the bevels different grinds so one side is for cutting things down (felling) the other bit splits it's a light smallish hatchet but it's like a lightweight that punches like a heavyweight seriously, I got that Idea from Washingtons book aka Nessmuk and I can understand now why he designed it, as a 1knife carry plus those other tool's I can go with my Bravo 1, Bokor Rold, BK-10, O.K.C. Gen2 SP-47, or SP-49, A-1 (Fallkniven) or any of my Swamp Rat's Rodent 4, Ratmandu, or my Fav. my Modde Rodent 6, or just about any one I have, comfort and compact is what I like in warm weather because I don't have to process as much wood to stay warm. Unless we're for a longer stay in the wilderness then I increase tge size of saw and axe, I might go with a Bob's Saw and my 2Hawks Warbeast or even my Gransfors Bruks Small Forest Axe, just suggestions, you seem to have some nice equipment too, tale care and have a safe summer.

I know you love that knife (to each their own) but we both know it wouldn't come remotely close to being as good of a carver or wood worker as a Mora.
Like I said, different purposes. The TFK is not a "bushcraft" or woodworking knife. It was designed as a "one tool option" because Andy wanted to keep his load out light and still be able to process larger wet wood in the rainy Pacific Northwest mountains. Why does one have to be "better" than the other?

A small axe works better for your job, try Gransfors or Wetterlings. One tool solutions are compromises. There's something lost with a very large knife - something you expect from a real knife. For example: in other videos, you seem to claim that it matters very much if a knife is balanced or not. With Tahoma Field Knife (and other similar knifes that want to be a machete or a kukri, with a very large blade), balance can't be an important question.
So tops has made it yet again. Stealing a design and calling it theirs, to sell it overpriced.
