  • A quick video in which I talk about how the Disney+ shows Andor and The Mandalorian approach their structure and how this might be applicable to two very different styles of Ironsworn: Starforged campaigns.

    I'm using the Starforged system in the Dune universe

    It's interesting that you recommend Andor: I must say that I started by finding it slow and less interesting than your Starforged episodes, where you're sharing your thoughts adds to the richness of the experience. Now, I came to appreciate Andor, but mostly because a Starforged campaign that brings in as many elements as there are in the series would be an amazing achievement. Andor thus forces my admiration, if I compare it to a typical Starforged campaign, and this is inspiring.

    The Expanse both books and show are great to pull inspiration from if you want a more 'grounded' or 'realistic' campaign, they do a great job of introducing actual physics as opportunities for storytelling rather than obstacles you're better off brushing aside for convenience in your story.

      I replaced the ship with another asset in my solo game to run a Miller like character through a series of adventures on a remote moon. I defined a few domain level factions for flavor, but the story is very local.

      @@thebadspot I really enjoy The Expanse. I was nervous it would be another plot-driven vehicle to show off a setting, but it's actually a character-driven narrative, which is what I prefer to read. Like the other person said, it uses technological limitations to set up interesting challenges for the characters to bounce off of and reveal themselves with. The series probably isn't in my top-5 favorites list for literature, but despite that it's definitely one of the most influential pieces of art when it comes to my own sci-fi storytelling.

    Now that I have my hands on Starforged, I’ve been prepping a couple of campaigns for the Red Rising novels universe, which is very basically like a more gritty Star Wars mixed with a little of things like Dune and ASOIAF and much more similar to Andor in terms of mainstream SW.
    It’s a bit of an experiment though, as my first campaign will be in Ironsworn before transitioning to Starforged for the second.

    Great stuff as always, Matt! I think I definitely run my show more like the Mandalorian, but I'm hoping to slow it down and be a little more introspective for Season 3.

      Cheers Steve! Sometimes I long for the ability to just let go and have a crazy, freewheeling adventure but the writer in me keeps telling me to try and explore ideas and themes and all that stupid stuff.

    One of the things I loved about Babylon 5 was the way it balanced story arcs. Sometimes it was purely episodic and others it was part of the main series arc. I struggle to welcome the chaos in Starforged but I am becoming a better player by emulating your style. I don’t know how you keep plugging away as my inspiration comes and goes. I might play every day for a week and then lose interest for a month. Archer and Luna often motivate me to pick up the dice again. Thank you.

      @thebadspot  Před rokem +1

      I'm so pleased my game gives you inspiration. Honestly my personal inspiration can run a little low at times, but it really helps that the dice can back me into a corner and force me into thinking my way out of it!

    In my starforged Play the andor way works better. Otherwise I had too many side quests, and the big picture was missing. Now, when I get a new (side-)quest, I check how it can be linked to the overall story. For this I found a customs campaign oracle to be useful (Starforged rulebook, Page 385). This oracle is used when I want to know how something i discover is linked to the epic vow (or could potentially be linked). However, in the campaign oracle I only put elements that are linked to the story epic vow. I also leave some entries empty (no link).

    • @thebadspot
      @thebadspot  Před rokem +1

      Custom campaign oracle sounds like a great thing to do! My show is about showcasing the game as written, but I might definitely look at some custom content in Season 3

      @@thebadspot Good to hear! To me a customs campaign oracle is according to the game as written. See page 385 of the star forged rulebook. Although, the truth depends from the (philosophical) point of view...thanks!

    I have to agree with taking the time to see where tangents go. I had the same experience in my own campaign. What started as a simple "side quest" - deliver some kind of drug to a hidden pirate base - turned into a central part of the overall storyline. I was able to explore new depths for Whiz, the pirate leader, and she slowly developed from a supporting character into the main character's bond-mate. The drug, originally a McGuffin, turned out to be fundamental to the backstory and a way to move forward to the final showdown of the second season.
    And it could have all as easily been a quick milk run if I hadn't paused to smell the proverbial roses.

    My current campaign started off with a mini arc dashing from disaster to disaster but slowed down in pace to something more akin to Andor, if Andor was all about cosmic horror. Recently really been enjoying The Peripheral, and the complexities of the politics in the show have definitely influenced what was already turning into a fairly complex game. Ultimately though, I keep pulling from Event Horizon because it's mad and who doesn't love OTT cosmic horror in their sci fi ?

  • @kvasac123
    @kvasac123 Před rokem +2

    I pull my inspiration from the artwork in the book in the way I imagine universe, which is clearly Star Wars influenced with all the retrofitted and dirty tech. And as a big fan of grimdark and sci fi horror as well as Alastair Reynolds Revelation Space series, I have vowen those elements into story too so there are parts of the storyline that are quite surreal and unnerving. But I am closer to Mandalorian in a way I am running the game I'd say, having fallen asleep during most of Andor episodes. But I don't do side questing much. I am letting story unfold based on oracle rolls. A lot of my enjoyment comes from trying to make connection and sense from some crazy oracle word combos - not once have I decided to adjust or ignore oracle results.

    I’m more a Trek fan and for quite some time have thought of making a Federation gone bad like Forge and a lone Doctor running from an Organised Crime Syndicate: I am also a fan of the usual suspects of Firefly, Farscape and The Expanse. More recently I have finally started making my character and building my own forge and I’m increasingly leaning to the ‘Corporate’ run Dark Matter style Forge. As to style - I think I’m more narrative driven than episodic - probably where my Trek idea died a death. Who knows, Aleta Fletcher hasn’t set out yet. I have sectors to build…

      @thebadspot  Před rokem +1

      That sounds like a very cool idea for a campaign! I play in a Star Trek Adventures game and recently got promoted to captain of my very own ship. However, I know nothing about Star Trek IRL, so I made my character a real dumbass who really has no idea what is going on in game. Makes my lack of trek knowledge a feature, not a bug!
