This week I am taking on another questionable fashion item, and testing out the Balenciaga x Vibram separated toe high heels! The internet was very unnerved when these bad boys hit the scene and though it's been a while since I took on an "ugly" piece of clothing, I felt like it was time to make a comeback. So I styled these bizarre shoes for a week to see what, if anything, I could glean about why they came to be.
Quick note -- I did include some pre-2020 footage, so anything you see inside of me in a store is from before 2020! Also, we made sure to take any sans-mask shots in very isolated area, with not another person in sight!

I do hope it is an intentional action to devalue high fashion and make it accessible, but that's like... an unattainable hope.

Tyler seems like such a kind, funny, awesome dude to hang out with and it's heartwarming seeing how supportive and loving he is of Safiya! I literally cried when I watched their proposal video because I was so happy they decided to officially tie the knot. Honestly, everyone needs a Tyler in their life who will love and support them unconditionally!
The problem with these is that the very concept of high heels is opposite to "5 toe" shoes. 5 toe shoes are all about being ergonomic and comfortable and don't care that they look dumb, but the very purpose of high heels is to look good at the cost of being uncomfortable.

I highly doubt it was men who thought of this dumb idea...I've seen instagram models and want to be models try to push this ugly shoes. I would guess it was some female influencer trying to be "Cool" and "Futuristic" or something.

Comfort wise, I'd much rather wear these, than regular high heels. And I'm fairly sure, they're better for your toe health, as well. Too bad, they're ugly and hella expensive...

As a wheelchair user you now have gotten the closest it is possible to get to my feelings on uneven surfaces without actually using wheels. Cobble stones are perhaps my greatest nemesis. Gravel is surprisingly fine, especially if I have my “dancing shoes” ie frog legs on.
Gravel is definitely more fine than i thought it would be but in a manual chair i do kinda feel like a dog on a tiled floor. Very aware of how precarious my position is. With a power chair it's great though, suspension forgives all sins 😂
@@raneemrashid6439 you should definitely look into either frog legs or a freewheel. They work amazingly well, and are shockingly well engineered. They’d cost a pretty penny though. A year ago I got a track chair and when I’m in that thing I feel like a beast. Playing around with wheelchair tech is great.
Ok I actually unironically loved that day 2 outfit. The asymmetrical blazer is fantastic and the shoes just really set off the “weird” vibes for me. Like the shoes make it feel like you’re really owning the weirdness rather than just choosing a weird statement jacket and everything else is conventional

As a former running shoe salesperson: shoes like these (ones with very little to no cushion) need an adjustment period. They usually recommend not wearing them all the time right away cause our feet aren’t used to them. Add that to the fact that high heels are already terrible for you and it’s no wonder your feet were so sore!

I actually just shoved my face into some brand new shoesthe other day. Took me right back to when I worked at the shoe department at JC Penneys lol. So much nostalgia, love it 💙
So when the toe shoes came out, they made toe separated socks to go with them to make it easier to put on and be comfy. I wonder how those would work in those
I've used my old regular Vibrams for walking up the creek and you're right about the parts where the water leaks and it doesn't dry quickly either, neither the shoe nor your sock, even if you only wear them for the water part of your journey and put on regular hiking boots for the part that's on land and even if you bring a towel and dry your feet off thoroughly before putting dry socks and boots on. I got HUGE blister by walking two miles to the creek in my Keen hiking boots (highly recommend!), a mile both ways up and back down the creek in my old Vibrams, and then drying my feet off and putting on dry socks with my boots again and walking the 2 miles back home. The blisters got bad within a mile or less on my way home after hiking in the water, even though I dried my feet off with a microfiber towel and everything, so I was literally limping the last mile back. Still, walking in the creek with the Vibrams on was still much better than walking barefoot because the thin sole was still enough to keep me from really feel the pain whenever I happened to step on a little rock in the creek. I air-dried my feet for a while after that and I got new insoles for my hiking boots so that I usually don't get blisters when I go on that same hike. Oh and I should also mention that I hike with like an 80 lb backpack full of stuff because I want to go backpacking so I'm trying to condition for it. That would put the weight on my feet much closer to 300 lbs than it is to 200 lbs too, which puts more stress on my feet and my shoes than I would put on them just walking normally, although I'd still probably carry at least 10 lbs of water on that hike no matter what.
It's weird because from far away, they look normal and cute. But once you zoom in, you're in for a treat

I remember watching this when it came out, and I figured that I should rewatch it, you know, now that it's been out for a few years. ... I'm not sure how I feel about it being less than six months old.
I own a pair of vibram shoes, got them while working at a summer camp for kids with disabilities. They were super useful for bathing the campers since we had to basically be dressed for swimming as we were in the showers too. They were also super helpful for doing activities on the lake (swimming, kayaking, sailing, etc). In certain settings they are a fantastic shoe but i don't found walking on rough terain to be the hardest aspect of them. If I i knew I I didnt need to go in the water I would just wear sandles because of how uncomfortable they are during prolonged use, could not begin to fathom how uncomfortable adding a 3" heel would make them. Some people love how they look, and i got the prettiest pair I could but they were still hideous, there's not getting away from that

Honestly? I think there's a point where you're just like "fuck it" and go for it. I was in an abusement park a few years ago in summer and after about an hour of feeling worried about being hot, fat and sweaty I jsut said "you know what, screw it. I am here, it is 98 degrees outside, Everyone is hot and sweaty and so am I. If anyone is judging me, that's on THEM, not me."

It’s actually really good to have your toes separated while walking. The heel hight is very bad but just generally having separated toes is good for your stance. Look into barefoot shoes to see the benefits
If you actually read scientific studies, you will see there are some benefits (running metabolic economy) some down sides (increased pain, injuries and inflammation) to minimalist shoes, but that all focuses on heel drop height. Personally, I’d err on the side of less injuries (cushioned shoes) than slightly faster running. There is absolutely no conclusive research on toe separation, and very little research at all on benefits for non runners. What is DEFINITELY true is that if you have any malformations in your skeleton or tendons, or if you are over weight, minimalist shoes can definitely be a risk.
@@Tinyvalkyrie410 my doctor told me to stop wearing Converse shoes because they do nothing for your feet and can cause all kinds of issues if worn a lot. Tbf, I wore them daily and walked a lot but still good to keep in mind
@@Tinyvalkyrie410 not just faster running though - if you run barefoot or shoes that mimic going barefoot, your gait generally ends up being more aligned with your centre of gravity, which is better for joints and avoiding things like plantar fascitis. The level of pain she was in is precisely why Vibram was sued over these shoes (the flat versions.) They were supposed to be good for your feet, but people actually were getting hairline fractures. I sincerely hope Safiya's feet recover and have no lasting damage!

@@mak3960 I don't know, but maybe because your toes aren't really supposed to get wedgies xD or like she mentioned, that her index toe was super cramped up in there. Maybe these shoes could be good if they properly fit your feet, but people have lots of different feet types so that'd be hard. Another reason I can think of is that walking on hard, flat surfaces (paved streets, stone, concrete) asks a lot more from your feet than walking on softer more varied terrain (like grass or dirt/ground or sand)
Vibrams are great. People who wear them tend to move their bodys more and be more risky so obviouly youre more prone to injury but its not because of the shoe its self really. This high heel one however us an absolute joke.
