When Omega’s eye turned towards their 1957 trilogy of sports watches, the reissued vintage watch trend was sky-high, but not yet at its peak. The last few years have seen brands like Omega perfecting the art of the retro, figuring out which elements needed updating and which ones were best kept in their original state. The new generation of Omega Speedmaster ’57 watches (read our review here) have hit every horological nail on the head, but behind their instant adoration on social media there is a a lot to delve into. Recently, Andrew visited Omega’s headquarters with their VP of Product, Gregory Kissling, to find out more about these bold new models. "Initially, I just thought this was a beautiful watch aesthetically," Andrew says in the video. "But then, as I researched more into it, I realised there was a whole story here."
The most obvious changes to the latest Omega Speedmaster ’57 watches would have to be the inclusion of colour on the dials, something that definitely wasn’t common in the 1950s but now feels necessary to impart more personal character to the watches. The process for achieving such a lush and colourful sunburst is explained in the video, but what's equally significant is the dramatically reduced slimness of the 40.5mm case. This new version now comes in at a svelte 12.99mm that transforms the overall wearability of the watch. "Compare this generation to the previous one and this is more than 3mm thinner," Gregory explains.
That, of course, all comes down to the movement. "The idea was to remove the self-winding mechanism and now we have a [movement with] a total thickness of only 6.4mm," Gregory says. "It's actually thinner than the MoonWatch movement."
Despite being whittled down, rest assured you still get a serious movement in the form of the Omega Co-Axial Master Chronometer Calibre 9906. Manually wound, the balance wheel is made of silicon, which helps lower the magnetic effect of timekeeping, while two barrel wheels are used to give the watch 60 hours of power reserve. Plus, of course, this being Omega, you also get METAS certification as well.
For all the in-depth footage of this fascinating watch, be sure to check out the video.

Andrew interviewing Andrew's Euro-clone prototype
I was reminded of the scene in Airplane! when Leslie Neilson talks with Peter Graves.
I can only dream of a jawline like Gregory's 😅 BUT THANKS - Andrew
@@Timeandtidewatches A supernatural clown terrorizes the children of Derry, Maine.
Oh, and if you were not prompting me to make a joke in the style of the film Airplane!, I was just referencing a scene with two actors who look the same (but not really). czcams.com/video/GE12zeIyPx0/video.html
@@Timeandtidewatches if Gregory is the CEO of jawline, then you're at least the non-executive chairman - great video Andrew as always
Unbelievable beautiful timepieces. Each color is stunning. You really can not go wrong on which one to choose from the group. Thank you for pointing out how “slim” it is. I’m looking forward to seeing it in person. Omega really knocked it out of the park!
They certainly did - and I simply cannot choose a favourite colour - and the sandwich dial too is superb - incredibly tough choices here. Thanks for watching Robert, Andrew
@@Timeandtidewatches That is exactly why I have not bought it yet. I cannot decide on the color. They are all gorgeous!
Agreed. It’s a shame these are impossible to find on Omega‘s website. Aside from the beige lume version. Seriously though, where are these on their website?
@@DeanoTXR53 visit an Omega boutique.
I really like that burgundy version. But there is something alluring about that midnight blue version.
Gorgeous watches the specs are near perfect. Omega has really gained a lot of hype this year.
Yep, wears like a dream.
Really beautiful watch, but the thickness reduction comes at the price of it now being a manual wind movement. Very much a one step forward, one step backward proposition.
Beautiful pieces of art. Omega sure knows how to make a great watch movement and aesthetically pleasing to the eye. I will buy the burgundy dial🤔
Was at the airport in Geneva .There were many Rolex watches on the windows at the shop as exhibited .Though none was available, absolutely zero .Went into a Omega shop ,there were plenty of beautiful watches available and the mechanics are even a lot better !
I recently bought the classic speed master piece.I have a submariner Rolex .
The design is at least as beautiful as the Rolex !I think I will buy this Speedmaster 57.I have become a fan after witnessing such a silly way of doing business with Rolex.
A common story these days unfortunately, but Omega's win.
It's good because ppl who were closed minded before finally are opening up their eyes and discovering Omega! At the right time! Bec Omega has been coming up with such great watches lately! They're back on track! My friends who saw the 3861 in the flesh were all surprised how good looking it is.
Bought the blue in Switzerland recently. Beautiful watch.
The Omega Speedmaster Pro (Hesalite) was/is my dream watch and it's the first luxury watch I ever bought (new). The Speedmaster '57 (blue dial) may be the second watch I will one day buy (love it)....sadly the price of the '57 is now double of when I bought my Moonwatch.
I love dive watches but Omega seems to have stepped up here. It seems so classy and elegant.
I hate dive watches but I agree
Love the colors! I came into the video thinking a Speedmaster without a black dial doesn't look right, but these all look great.
The sandwich dial keeps the heritage vibe real, but the colours are just irresistible. Don't ask me to choose though, please.
For me it’s really between the green and the black. I really like the 3d effect on the black but I also like the fact that the green seems to have this deep green that shifts depending on the light.
Such a stunning collection. Those applied hour markers and logo. The refinement of the case and bracelet system. Not to mention, the cutting-edge technology, powering this beast. Such a classy piece, covered in an equally classy performance on the part of both, Gregory as well as yourself, Andrew. You always seem to be in the right place, at the right time, and you never cease to amaze me w/ your poise. Bravo mate.....👏bravo. Here's wishing you all the best. Cheers.....
That blue pvd is gorgeous!!!!!
Omega finally figured out how to make some of the coax movements thinner! Great looking watch.
Wearability is really an underrated quality but so important! I wish Tag Heuer would take note of this. The Heuer 02 movement is like a hockey puck.
Right. And they magically slim it in some applications. Make them all thinner!!!!
Movement thickness is overrated in these relatively medium watch heights...
How did IWC manage to make a 12.8mm thick Portugieser Chronograph with a 7750 derivative some 20 years ago otherwise?! Model 3714... 7750 is even thicker than both Tag Heuer 02 and Omega 9300.
If we start pushing chronographs below 11-12mm height, that's where movement construction gets excruciatingly relevant
These pieces are gorgeous. And that movement looks so good. However Someone needs to explain to me how Rolex manages to make a thinner automatic chronograph.
With 50m more water resistance to boot
Many actually like a little more "substantial" piece on the wrist.
been looking for a single watch that is worth selling my current 6 piece collection for. This is it. I think I just found my grail. amazing!
Not the biggest Omega fan but these are beautiful. I think the blue is my favourite.
The only other Speedy I like is the Moonphase black dial. Just a shame that they’re probably a little bit over my budget!
I'll have one of each of the colourways please. On the bucket list. I am an Omega fanboy. Thx T&T..keep 'em coming!!
This does make me rethink getting an IWC pilot Chronograph
Omega smashed it with this line!
They really did. All the tech, all the beauty, all the value - winning everywhere.
The green is amazing, hell all are amazing. I got a message from a local omega boutique when this came in, a week later it was sold out.
Stunning - both the watch and your presentation. Thanks.
The green dial is absolutely brutal
That green and red watches are gorgeous!! Hope you'll do a video like this on the Green Seamaster.
Already have 🤯
Lovely aesthetic, elegant and balanced. And great presentation. I have a few two subdial chronographs, this one would fit among them very nicely!
Well said, truly among the best looking Bicompax out there, if not #1.
Amazing work guys. Best Watch Media team in the business.
Thanks JJ 🙏🏻
57 speedy looks so much better without all that tacho text crap on the bezel.
Nobody I know actually reads that stuff.
Cant seem to find info on how thick the watch is? Even on omega site. But by looking at it, impressive how thin it is considering most chronographs are so thick and bulky. Beautiful watch 😘
It’s not often you get to say this, but that is a perfect watch.
Would need to see it on a variety of straps for the final call, but yes, a contender.
For me that is literally the most (all around) attractive watch I’ve ever seen.
Not surprised
Lovely.
Omega has so much incredible momentum, so many winners recently.
Movement is gorgeous, colours are fantastic, slimmness spot on.
Talking of spots, who's the fella with the wart on his thumb 🤣
Copied the Tag Carrera 02 dark blue and green; the design is very close also. I really like that dark red!
I want the blue dial please . just beautiful. I wonder what she would look like with the black bezel
Midnight vibes.
When does this release?
Released!
The new movement looks great!
The hands and the applied logo look great!
But I do miss the twisted lugs ( to much a Moonwatch fan) .
Imho the late 90s Moonwatch broad arrow „Replica“ cal. 1861 with its metal hands and applied vintage logo (and with the 42mm classic twisted lugs case) looks even nicer!
P.S.
Hope Omega makes next year (2023) a readdition of the Omega Speedmaster 125th first released in 1973. Love those central minutes chronograph watches!
Thanks for the great content!
Thanks for watching Pete, and for the learned comments - Andrew
I want one of each colour way..is that a bad thing? 😊
As Tom Jones would say, it's not unusual.
@@Timeandtidewatches hahaha, totally agree 😂
Stunning watches! Well done!
I have now seen all the four variations in metal, including the least available Burgundy. My preference in order is Blue, Burgundy, Green and Sandwich. I was tempted to get the burgundy as that is, according to my dealer, the rarest and might holds it value better in future. But I let my heart decide this and I got the Blue one. I plan to wear it and not store it in a safe as an investment!!
Hmm. Thats odd. My local AD received a burgundy several months ago (their 1st 57) and still unsold. Not so popular. There is a long wait list for the blue. Im eagerly waiting for mine. Im 2nd on the list, and I hope to get it next month. 😊
@@Raven77844 Yes you are right. He was probably trying to get me to buy the Burgundy one instead of the Blue one. I think Omega is playing Rolex game by releasing very few Burgundy making it appear it is rare. They are now doing the same for the blue one I think!
7:36 the guy highlighted the black minute tracks on all of them twice and yet you didn't even notice.
WOW these timepieces are just damn stunning. I've been saving up for a Seamaster 300m but after seeing these I'm seriously reconsidering my choice.
Have you looked at an aqua terra? They really surprised me and I’m a huge fan of divers. The new sea master 300 chrono is a beast.
@@2K9s I have and boy are they stunning.
I bumped the moonwatch on the door inside the honeybucket once and the bezel got knocked off of the watch. It dropped on the floor and didn't go inside the toilet. I didn't know the bezel could come off so easily. If the numbers and lines are etched on the case itself and the bezel is not a separate piece it would be a better design.
Beautiful Omega. Wow. Thanks.
These are amazing! I wish they discontinue the Railmaster line
Need one of these
aah that green 😍. Thanks Andrew
Perfection
They have outdone themselves! 😍
Was this a video about the Omega Speedmaster '57, or a bro-mance extraordinaire in the making? Perhaps a little from both? The answer, I feel, is clearer than that sapphire crystal👍
Bloody excellent comment soupistasty5
I believe this is 13mm thick? Wish they could have done this in 11mm and 100m water resist... one can dream
It wears thin... paper specs don't tell the whole story
If they will refresh the dark side of the moon series with the new movement it will be amazing
Stunning, the burgundy one for me.
That burgundy dial is 🔥
Simply CANNOT decide which is the hottest - impossible.
Stunning watches! Pure class!
All the class
Oooh. Wanna. Wanna. So gorgeous ❤❤❤
These are amazing watches. Incredible colors. Lush dimensional dials and awesome brightwork. However, if a Speedmaster is to be used for it purpose - that is, timing laps, then the stick hands and the lack of a date makes more sense.
To paraphrase the Cannonball Run, when I'm timing laps, a date is like a rear view mirror... I just don't need it!
These are impressive watches, but not tool watches like my 2000 Speedy manual wind.
Fair enough, but for mine, when the date window integrates this beautifully (and symmetrically / sympathetically) I think it deserves an extra tip of the cap - Andrew
Although the older 57 release was too thick, it had a much better bracelet and clasp. The new bracelet feels flimsier and cheaper, the automatic versions bracelet is solid
The last year or two omega have been killing it
Yes exactly!
Great looking watches! Pre-ordered 2 six months ago!
Keep us posted!
Which 2 color did you ordered? are you planning to keep both?!
I think I’ve just found my Speedy.
🙌🙌
How cute you both wear the same color suit.
💕
The description says "Price: $12,725 AUD (on leather) / $12,200 AUD (on bracelet)" I assume that's backwards? Or it's one HELL of a leather strap. :) I'm not the biggest chronograph fan but those are pretty sweet.
The watches are stunning. Congrats Omega! Not so impressed with the interviewer though. He speaks more than the Omega guy…
That would be me, Andrew, nice to meet you. As in About Effing Time, it's established I talk too much. I could do better. I get too excited. Thanks for watching.
@@Timeandtidewatches Ha! Thanks for your reply. Self awareness is a virtue, much welcome these days, specially in social media. You just got yourself a new subscriber. Saludos from a watch enthusiast!
Vintage black all the way. Goes with any out fit! I feel like one of the other color ways will have me not wanting to wear with certain color shirts.
I love Omega and this is a gorgeous redesign, but most enthusiast are already manually winding a moon watch every other day, so why would I want to wind another. This would have been the perfect addition if it was automatic.
Nonetheless the colors are amazing, but I will await this in a new auto. Cheers
But then it’s gonna be thicker. Defeating the purpose of this awesome new addition.
I'm in love
Wow love this new design
Love to see a micro rotor, but this still has to be the best Releases Omega has done in years.
Great interview, this new line is on fire.
Thanks Ron. The 57 is fire 100% of the time, 100% of the time.
Can’t wait for these.
Omega is on fire!
Somebody call 911 (or 000 in Aus)
@@Timeandtidewatches hahaha YES!
Stunning! Thank you for this video.
It's really nice of you to thank us. Thank YOU for watching - Andrew
They look great! I'm hoping Omega will eventually add a self-winding rotor to match the functionality of other chronograph automatics with similar thickness.
And needless to ask: they finally included a quick adjustment clasp, right?
Greg dresses like a magician.
Because he is. With a chiselled Hollywood jaw as a bonus.
Stunning!
Why are watches always displayed with the date of number 8?
Good question - lucky for some
The green face is absolutely fantastic!
Omega, please bring back the Speedmaster FOIS and make it thinner too.
They are fantastic watches. Absolutely love mine. My Rolex not been on the wrist for ages.
They are lovely, and so are the new 39mm Aqua Terras, but they are still not available going on 7 months or so after the "release". They are saying the way they are creating the sunburst dials is a new technology that they are working out the wrinkles with for mass production, but that is what is kinda silly to me. If you can't produce at scale yet, it isn't ready to be released, and the way they released them along with the moonswatches right before Baselworld idk just seems gimmicky and a bit tacky. Don't get me wrong the prototypes and computer mock ups look great, but we will see how they look when they actually are being sold to the public. Looking forward to my Omega boutique letting me know they actually have some.
Would you consider purchasing one for yourself Andrew? You seem very taken by the 57! If so, which colour would you lean towards?
Yes, absolutely - I ask myself this question a lot - I find the sandwich dial vintage themed one almost the winner, but the colours drag me back. Torn.
@@Timeandtidewatches the sandwich dial is hot! Will need to check these out in person.
You two are very sharply dressed !
Love it great watch! Well done
Could the interviewer/reviewer have shown any less interest in the clockface chronograph?
The move from 30 minute counter to clockface might be the single biggest improvement that it's possible to make to a chronograph but hey, that's no reason to suddenly acknowledge that chronographs are for timing things and having a cool watch with the cute little clocks on the dial is... well, just cute. And they dare to call it a tool watch!
That burgundy 😍
Beautiful watches
WOW. the speedmaster 57 is SO GORGEOUS.. LOVE IT.
but wish the case diameter were bigger. something like 42 or 43mm. it would've been perfect (for me of course).. thanks great video.
Lovely watch, however fingers crossed Omega will soon get over their Fauxtina phase.
That burgundy dial
Almost 10k ..
They're very nice but a tad expensive id stick to a moonwatch for the money
Love this watch. I’d get the burgundy.
Yeah, probably 1% over the green, very hard choice.
The paradox of choice! It can be a difficult decision to go hesalite or sapphire (on the Moonwatch) so how are people going to choose between these beautiful dials?!
🤷🏼
Hahaha work hard and all or most of the ones you like!🙂
Nice. Where the heck is the new aqua terra though?
Dude, this video is about the 57 Speedy, ain't no AT in this story.
That would be the vintage 3d sandwich dial for me. Oh, and Omega, please twist the lugs in next generation. Thank you :)
Ese Speedy verde me tiene loco.
Hace mucho tiempo que no veia una Joya asi.
Tremendo peluco.
❤
omega doesnt understand its core buyers, this is soooo disappointing, the problem with the old 57 was not its thickness, it was the lug to lug distance which was ginormous and it made it unwearable for many people, and trust me when I say it, i have a thick wrist, I usually wear 43-45 mm watches but the speedy 57 was unwearable, and it was not the thickness. so with this reissue they nerfed the movement, removed the automatic part which pretty much all the owners would want, gave us a slim case, which albeit nicer was not the main issue, but kept the only thing that they should have actually replace, the lugs.
I'm pretty sure this movement doesn't have a quickset date. Given that it's a manual wind piece, I fear I would be cycling through the date wheel every time I let the watch run down. This is probably a deal breaker for me on an otherwise perfect watch. If only they had just left it without a date.
It has kind of a GMT feature that lets you move the hour hand separately in hourly steps. Setting date is really no problem and shouldn't be a deal breaker. It wears wonderful, the bracelet is great. I love absolutely love that watch.
@@massl It's beautiful. So how many turns of the crown to cycle the date? If you need to bypass two weeks it would be the worst case scenario I suppose.
