    I remember back in the 1990s when I lived with my roommate that owned a comic book/gaming store. He used to get anime for customers, but I was never a fan in the beginning, since it seemed aimed at children (I was in Japan as an adolescent in the late 70s and the anime on TV there was very kid oriented). Anyways, long story short, a friend of mine said there were more adult animes available, so I asked my roommate to get an adult anime for me. You know where this went, unfortunately. After realizing it was "adult" (i.e. hentai), I understood my mistake. Hearing it again coming from you guys just makes me chuckle.

    While I am enjoying the show, my biggest complaint is the pacing. Every line and joke feels like they were set to get to the end of each episode within a certain time limit, and it takes away from the emotional impact of some scenes and it doesn’t leave a lot of time to laugh over the better jokes.

      30 minute episodes trying to contain ALL the glory of CR campaign 1. I think it is paced VERY well considering how much is being crammed into each episode. This show HAS to be tight and fast and action packed. No time to uncork the wine and let it breathe here.

      Unfortunately, in animation, you dont have the luxury of lingering on every single moment. If they did the length of the show would be infinitely longer, and literally every second costs money. This is with the result of them getting 10x plus of their initial goals for funding.
      Imagine how it would have to be if this who thing lasted 75 min?

    • @peter_parkour

      This is a very valid observation. I felt that too on the first two episodes. However, I think the show hit its stride on the third. If someone who has no idea what Critical Role is saw it they would definitely notice the rushed introductions on the first two. Too much dialogue for exposition is a necessary evil to provide context on two 20-minute episodes. But judging by the third episode, it looks like the next ones would be better.

      "This is a very valid observation. I felt that too on the first two episodes. However, I think the show hit its stride on the third"
      This is absolutely my observation. I started watching CR with Campaign 2 and only watched clips of Campaign 1. Seeing people's response to episode 1 and 2 made me feel like their is likely going to be some disconnect between the people that are fans of Vox Machina already and people that's first experience is the show.
      Episodes 1 and 2, to me, were very "meh". Not bad, but not particularly good either. Episode 3, however, was great and definitely makes me want more.
      I hope that the strength of episode 3 is representative of the rest of the season, as that would mean it is likely going to be a great success.

    Am very much liking the show. The episodes feel very rushed, with characters moving places far faster, and doing things that, as a Critical Role fan, you’ll know how this works, but otherwise doesn’t make any sense. But, the pacing issue is understandable. It’s a LOT of content to get through. I just hope it slows down after episode 3.

    The show is... well this is going to get hated on but... If you have no understanding of DnD or Critical Roll you will most likely feel lost when you watch the first three episodes. If you are an average watcher of CR and know the first game a little you will notice that there wasn't a lot of character introduction and what there was, was vague at best in the show. If your a hard core or long term fan of CR you are going to nerd rage at anyone who points these things out, but understand I didn't dislike the show. Just know that your extensive understanding of all that is CR is not held by everyone. If you look at the show from a newcomer's perspective there was literally no build up to killing a dragon, A DRAGON! They make it seem like this Big Bad monster and then... Oh ya stab em in the neck and he dies... also Grog somehow cut through those scales he couldn't dent a minute ago because he yelled "I would like to rage!" like it's some catch phrase, but to anyone seeing the show and not knowing what that means it's weird because they didn't really give it a meaning in the show it feels more like a "Hulk Smash" rip off even though it has such a deeper meaning. This could have been a 10 second flashback fix where they show random fights where Grog was pushed to his limit and raged out then overcame his foe. The show just felt like it was trying to push 20+ quest lines in the face of the viewer at once. I really like CR and I have become more of an active watcher. I will continue to tune in to the show as I did enjoy it, but I just think they need to do a little more setup, for example episode one "OMG IT's a DRAGON!! WE ARE GOING TO DIE! But we have to kill it because it killed this one kid." Episode 2 "17mins to find a dragon. 5 mins to kill it. Ok now what?" Episode three "OMG there are two vampire people that beat the crud out of us. We need to do something but we are going to jail."... at this rate Episode 4 "Broke out of prison. Killed the vampire peeps. killed every monster in the world. Became Gods. What's next?"

    • @masquerademage
      @masquerademage Před 2 lety +1

      I'm a big fan of CR and I agree with you on the character intros and moments where you'd have to have some knowledge of the source material to truly connect with what's happening. Obviously I know who these characters are and what they're about so the moments like Grog's rage hit hard for me, but to a newcomer it must be confusing lol. Not only that, but if you've seen the campaign in any capacity you'll know that these characters have quite a bit of depth. For anyone seeing them for the first time? I would have to wonder if that hidden depth is coming through, or if they all seem kind of flat. I don't think there was enough time invested in the beginning into making these characters meaningful and accessible to those who have no idea what D&D/Critical Role is.
      All that said, these are only the first three episodes (and they are wonderful overall), so they could still surprise us!
